Give an AI agent context as an operating system, not a longer prompt. The dependable pattern combines durable but isolated state, narrowly described tools, verifiable identity, least-privilege authorization, a runtime matched to the agent’s lifecycle, and observability that connects decisions to tool calls and infrastructure events. The right design depends on execution length, sensitivity, interoperability, and your team’s operating model; no single platform is established as universally best.

What “infrastructure context” means for an agent

A prompt supplies instructions for one interaction. Infrastructure context supplies the conditions under which an agent can continue working, decide what it is allowed to do, use external capabilities, and recover when a process or host changes. It includes:

  • State: conversation history, task checkpoints, durable memory, and retrievable documents.
  • Capabilities: tools, APIs, filesystems, code execution, and the schemas that describe them.
  • Identity and policy: which agent instance is acting, which tenant it represents, and which operations it may perform.
  • Execution: a runtime with suitable duration, resources, isolation, and restart behavior.
  • Evidence: metrics, logs, traces, evaluations, and audit records that show what happened.

AWS guidance notes that autonomous agents may run for hours and therefore need both retained context and isolation from other instances. Kubernetes’ Agent Sandbox description similarly treats agents as stateful singleton workloads with persistent identity and secure scratch space. These are infrastructure properties, not prompt-writing tricks.

Start with a context inventory

Before selecting a platform, list what the agent must know and do. For every source, record its owner, sensitivity, freshness requirement, and failure behavior. This prevents a common mistake: exposing an entire enterprise catalog when the task needs only a few relevant capabilities.

Context component Questions to answer Typical control
Session history What must survive a tool call or process restart? When does it expire? Versioned session store with retention and encryption
Longer-lived memory Which facts may persist across sessions, and who may read or delete them? Tenant-scoped memory records with provenance and deletion policy
Knowledge sources How fresh must documents be? Can retrieved content be stale or malicious? Retrieval filters, freshness metadata, source allowlists, and content scanning
Tools and APIs Which operations are read-only, reversible, or irreversible? Typed schemas, scoped credentials, rate limits, and approval gates
Scratch data Can code or files from one run be seen by another run? Ephemeral, per-run workspace with quotas and cleanup
Identity Can an action be tied to an agent, user, tenant, and session? Workload identity and immutable audit attributes

Classify each item as ephemeral, session, durable, or retrievable. Keep only the minimum required data in the active prompt. Large, undifferentiated context increases token cost and latency and makes it harder for the model to select the right action.

Separate the four state layers

Ephemeral execution state

Use ephemeral state for temporary files, intermediate results, and credentials that should disappear at the end of a run. A per-agent or per-task workspace limits accidental disclosure and constrains untrusted code. Set storage, CPU, memory, network, and execution-time quotas; clean the workspace even after failures.

Session state

Session state contains the current plan, tool results, user approvals, and checkpoints. Store it outside the model process so a restart does not erase progress. Include a schema version, timestamps, tool-call identifiers, and the identity under which each action occurred. A checkpoint should be safe to replay or explicitly marked as non-replayable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Durable memory

Durable memory is appropriate for user-approved preferences, stable project facts, or completed-task summaries. It should have an owner, retention period, provenance, and deletion path. Do not silently promote every conversation detail into permanent memory; that creates privacy, accuracy, and prompt-injection risks.

Retrievable knowledge

Keep large or frequently changing material in a retrieval system rather than embedding it wholesale in every prompt. Attach source, version, access scope, and freshness to each chunk. Treat retrieved text as data, not instructions: documents can contain indirect prompt injection or tool-poisoning content.

Expose tools through a controlled interface

Google Cloud describes the Model Context Protocol (MCP) as a standardized interface for agent access to tools and data. A protocol can make capabilities more interoperable, but it does not replace governance. API management remains responsible for endpoint lifecycle, authentication, rate limits, quotas, and monitoring.

Write tool definitions for selection, not marketing

Each tool definition should state its purpose, required and optional parameters, accepted formats, side effects, permission needed, timeout, and return schema. Say whether an operation is idempotent, reversible, or destructive. Return structured errors that tell the agent whether to retry, ask the user, or stop.

Google Cloud warns about “tool bloat”: excessive tool definitions dilute attention and can reduce accuracy while increasing cost and latency. Present a task-specific tool set or a discoverable namespace with strong filtering instead of an undifferentiated catalog. Keep names distinct; ambiguous tools encourage unsafe guesses.

Put a policy layer between the agent and the endpoint

  • Authenticate every call, including calls between internal services.
  • Authorize the specific operation, resource, tenant, and data fields rather than granting broad API access.
  • Apply quotas, concurrency limits, timeouts, and circuit breakers.
  • Log the requested operation, policy decision, result status, latency, and caller identity.
  • Require explicit confirmation for irreversible actions such as deleting data, sending external messages, or changing production configuration.

MCP answers how a capability is described and invoked. API management or an equivalent gateway answers whether that invocation is authenticated, allowed, observable, and within limits. Use both where their responsibilities differ.

Make identity and permissions infrastructure concerns

Do not rely on a model’s instruction to “act carefully.” Bind every action to a verifiable workload identity, user or service principal, tenant, session, and purpose. Kubernetes Agentic Networking lists unique agent identity, granular authorization, and auditable traffic among its goals. Google Cloud’s security guidance emphasizes that permissions can change during an agent’s lifetime and that indirect prompt injection and tool poisoning can redirect an otherwise legitimate agent.

Use least privilege at operation level

Create separate permissions for reading a customer record, changing it, exporting it, and deleting it. Scope credentials to the smallest resource set and shortest useful lifetime. Prefer short-lived, automatically rotated credentials over secrets placed in prompts, files, or environment variables visible to arbitrary tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Model approvals as state transitions

An approval should identify the exact action, parameters, affected resources, requester, approver, expiry, and whether the request may be modified after approval. If the agent changes material parameters, require a new approval. Record both the approval and the resulting tool call.

Assume inputs may be adversarial

User messages, retrieved documents, web pages, tool output, and generated code can all contain instructions that conflict with policy. Delimit untrusted content, keep secrets out of model-visible text where possible, validate tool arguments in deterministic code, and enforce authorization after the model has made its choice.

Choose a runtime that matches the lifecycle

Compare execution models on duration, persistence, isolation, resource shape, startup behavior, and operational ownership. A short request-response task has different requirements from an agent that writes code, waits for external events, or coordinates with other agents for hours.

Runtime pattern Best fit Strengths Trade-offs to verify
Managed agent runtime Teams wanting provider-operated scaling and integrations Less platform maintenance; built-in lifecycle features may be available Provider-specific interfaces, limits, data-location rules, and pricing; exact capabilities vary
Serverless function Brief, stateless tool calls and event handlers Simple deployment and automatic scaling Execution-duration, memory, networking, and cold-start limits; externalize all durable state
Long-running container Agents needing custom libraries, streaming, or extended execution Control over process, dependencies, and resource sizing You operate patching, scheduling, autoscaling, restarts, and isolation
Sandboxed workload Agents that execute untrusted code or need strong per-run boundaries Dedicated scratch space and tighter containment Additional startup and resource overhead; sandbox APIs and maturity must be checked
Self-managed Kubernetes workload Organizations already operating clusters and needing placement control Rich scheduling, identity, networking, and observability integrations Highest operational burden; secure defaults and lifecycle automation are your responsibility

The Kubernetes Agent Sandbox article published March 20, 2026 describes stateful singleton workloads, persistent identity, and secure scratch space, but explicitly says the project is in development. Treat its API and lifecycle behavior as an emerging option, not a blanket production guarantee; verify the current release and support status before depending on it.

Instrument the complete execution path

Kubernetes defines observability as collecting and analyzing metrics, logs, and traces—the “three pillars”—to understand cluster state, performance, and health. For agents, add model and evaluation signals to those infrastructure signals.

Signal Record Question it answers
Metrics Run duration, queue time, token usage, tool latency, retries, timeouts, resource saturation Is the system healthy and where is capacity being consumed?
Logs Structured plan steps, policy decisions, tool outcomes, errors, approvals What happened in sequence?
Traces One trace spanning user request, model calls, retrieval, policy checks, and tools Which dependency or decision caused the result?
Evaluation records Task success, groundedness, policy violations, regression-test results Did behavior remain useful and safe after a change?
Audit records Immutable actor, tenant, resource, operation, approval, timestamp, and outcome Who authorized and performed a consequential action?

Propagate a correlation ID through every layer. Redact secrets and unnecessary personal data before storing telemetry, while retaining enough context to reproduce a failure. AWS guidance includes agent evaluation, regression detection, and monitoring as part of operations; a CPU dashboard alone cannot reveal that a model selected the wrong tool or trusted poisoned content.

Implement the architecture in a deliberate sequence

  1. Define the task boundary. Write the agent’s objective, allowed side effects, maximum run duration, data classifications, and human-approval points.
  2. Inventory sources and tools. Assign an owner, freshness target, sensitivity level, schema, and failure behavior to every source. Remove capabilities that are not required for the task.
  3. Choose state locations. Put temporary artifacts in an isolated workspace, checkpoints in a durable session store, approved long-term facts in governed memory, and large changing material behind scoped retrieval.
  4. Design the tool contract. Define typed inputs and outputs, side effects, idempotency, timeouts, error classes, and versioning. Expose the contract through MCP when interoperability is useful.
  5. Place the gateway and policy engine. Enforce authentication, authorization, quotas, rate limits, network egress rules, and argument validation outside the model.
  6. Issue workload identity. Give each agent instance a unique, auditable identity tied to tenant and session. Use short-lived credentials and rotate them automatically.
  7. Select the runtime. Match serverless, containers, managed execution, or a sandbox to duration, resource needs, startup tolerance, isolation requirements, and your team’s operational skills.
  8. Add recovery semantics. Checkpoint before and after side effects, mark non-replayable calls, use idempotency keys, and define what happens after timeout, duplicate delivery, or partial failure.
  9. Connect telemetry. Correlate model calls, retrieval, policy decisions, tool activity, infrastructure metrics, logs, traces, evaluations, and audit records.
  10. Test adversarially. Exercise prompt injection, poisoned tool descriptions, stale documents, revoked permissions, tenant crossover, resource exhaustion, and interrupted runs. Keep regression cases and rerun them after model, prompt, tool, or platform changes.
  11. Roll out gradually. Start with read-only tools and a narrow tenant or dataset. Add write operations only after policy, approval, recovery, and monitoring behavior is demonstrated.

Compare designs using the decisions that matter

Decision axis Questions to ask Evidence to require before launch
State and persistence Does context survive tool calls, restarts, and separate sessions? What is retained and who can read it? Recovery test, retention policy, access-control test, and deletion test
Isolation Are agents, tenants, scratch files, networks, and credentials separated? How is untrusted code contained? Cross-tenant and escape tests, resource quotas, and network policy review
Tool interoperability Does the design use MCP or another interface? Can tools change without coupling reasoning logic to implementation? Versioned schemas, compatibility tests, and a documented deprecation path
Identity and permissions Is every agent uniquely identified? Can access be scoped to individual operations, audited, and approved? Denied-action tests, credential-rotation test, and immutable audit trail
Observability Can operators correlate metrics, logs, traces, tool activity, and evaluations? Trace from a user request to an external side effect, including a failure case
Operating model Does managed execution, serverless, containers, or self-managed Kubernetes fit the lifecycle and team? Documented on-call ownership, upgrade process, capacity plan, and exit strategy

There is no established universal winner across these axes. A design with excellent isolation may impose more startup overhead; a highly interoperable tool layer may require more schema and governance work; a managed service may reduce operations while increasing platform coupling. Make those trade-offs explicit rather than treating “agent platform” as a single feature.

What current adoption figures do—and do not—tell you

In a Google Cloud post dated August 24, 2026, the company reported that 79% of tech leaders identified security, governance, or operations as their most significant challenge to scaling inference; 35% of senior IT decision makers cited insufficient security for multi-system access as a primary barrier to agentic deployment; 69% of surveyed executives rated a full-stack platform a critical requirement; and 80% said data compliance was the primary factor dictating platform choice.

These are vendor-published figures. The cited page excerpt does not fully state the survey population or fieldwork dates, so they should be treated as directional signals rather than universal prevalence estimates. They reinforce the practical priority of identity, governance, compliance, and operations, but they do not prove that one platform or architecture performs best.

A separate 2026 preprint describes one 108,000-line C# distributed system built with 19 specialized agents, 34 on-demand specification documents, and 283 development sessions. That is an example of one project’s process, not a general benchmark or expected project size.

Common failure modes and fixes

The agent forgets work after a restart

Cause: state exists only in the model context or local process memory.

Fix: persist versioned checkpoints externally; store tool-call IDs and idempotency keys; resume from the last confirmed state rather than replaying unknown side effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The model chooses the wrong tool

Cause: overlapping names, vague descriptions, or too many exposed tools.

Fix: narrow the tool set, make side effects and return types explicit, use deterministic routing for high-risk operations, and test tool-selection regressions.

A document changes the agent’s behavior

Cause: indirect prompt injection or poisoned tool metadata.

Fix: label retrieved and tool-provided content as untrusted, separate data from instructions, validate arguments outside the model, and enforce policy at the endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A legitimate credential becomes too powerful

Cause: broad, long-lived permissions or a policy decision based only on the agent’s stated intent.

Fix: use short-lived, operation-scoped credentials; re-check authorization at call time; revoke access when the user, tenant, or task state changes.

Operators cannot explain a result

Cause: model logs, tool logs, and infrastructure telemetry use different identifiers or omit policy decisions.

Fix: propagate one correlation ID, capture structured events at every boundary, and connect evaluation and audit records to the same run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The runtime is either wasteful or too constrained

Cause: choosing a function for an hours-long workflow, or a permanently running container for a brief event handler.

Fix: measure duration, concurrency, memory, startup tolerance, I/O, and isolation needs first; then select the simplest runtime that meets those requirements.

A practical target architecture

A robust implementation commonly has these boundaries:

  • Orchestrator: maintains the plan, session checkpoint, retry state, and approval status.
  • Context broker: retrieves only authorized, fresh knowledge and presents a task-specific tool set.
  • Policy gateway: authenticates calls, evaluates operation-level permissions, applies quotas, validates arguments, and records decisions.
  • Tool services: expose narrowly scoped APIs through MCP or another typed interface; they enforce authorization again at the resource boundary.
  • Isolated executor: runs code and handles scratch files with per-run quotas, restricted network access, and automatic cleanup.
  • State stores: keep session checkpoints, governed memory, and retrieval indexes separate so retention and access rules remain clear.
  • Telemetry pipeline: joins traces, metrics, logs, evaluations, and immutable audit events under a common run identity.

This arrangement lets you change a model, tool implementation, or runtime without silently changing who can access data. It also gives operators a place to stop a run, revoke credentials, inspect an action, or require approval before a consequential side effect.

Questions to settle before production

  • What is the maximum time an agent may run, and what happens when that limit is reached?
  • Which state must survive a restart, and what is the documented retention and deletion behavior?
  • Can one tenant, agent, or tool read another’s memory, files, credentials, or traces?
  • Which operations are read-only, reversible, destructive, or externally visible?
  • Where is authorization enforced if the model is manipulated?
  • Can a revoked permission stop an already running agent?
  • Can an operator reconstruct one result from request through retrieval, policy, tool call, and infrastructure event?
  • Which APIs or project features are still in development, and what is the fallback if they change?

If those answers are explicit and testable, the agent has operational context rather than merely a larger prompt.
