You can limit what a smart TV can reach by applying controls to that device on your router, or by placing it on an isolated network. Start with the TV’s privacy settings and your router’s device list, then choose a restriction that still permits the features you use. A connection log can help identify where the TV connects, but it does not by itself show what information was sent or why.
Why is my smart TV connecting to so many sites?
A TV may contact services for streaming, software updates, content discovery, advertising or other smart features. A list of domains or DNS requests shows destinations the network observed; it does not establish the contents of encrypted traffic or the purpose of every connection. Device behavior also varies by model, software, market, and the apps and services in use.
A 2019 study, “Characterizing Smart Home IoT Traffic in the Wild,” found that 5.9% of hostnames accessed by smart TVs in its observed dataset appeared on the study’s ad and tracker lists. That is a study-specific share of hostnames, not the share of all traffic, a measure of data collected, or a current rate for all televisions. The paper also reported that around 20% of smart TV web traffic in its analysis used HTTP; that finding describes its study-era observations, not today’s TVs generally. Read the study.

There is no established current, universal figure for how much outbound traffic today’s smart TVs generate or what fraction is telemetry. Treat a traffic log as a starting point for investigation, not proof of surveillance or proof that a domain is unnecessary.

What privacy controls can I change on the TV?
Check the TV’s privacy, advertising, viewing-data, and consent settings before changing network access. The labels and effects depend on manufacturer, model, software version, and market, so use the TV’s own settings guide for exact instructions.
For one specific example, LG said on September 12, 2026, that Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) may operate on supported sources such as Live TV and HDMI-connected devices, but not within third-party apps such as Netflix or YouTube accessed through LG Apps. LG says ACR can process content-identification fingerprints alongside device, source, network, and consent information, and that users can disable the feature in settings. LG also says optional services and controls vary by market. These statements describe LG’s products and should not be assumed to apply to another brand or model. Read LG’s statement.

How can I block or limit my TV’s internet access?
Use the least restrictive control that addresses your concern. Router features differ by model and firmware; consult the manual for the exact device and confirm what each control blocks.
- Identify the TV in the router. Open the router’s connected-device or client list and match the TV by its displayed name or network address. If the identity is uncertain, compare the list while the TV is on and off.
- Try a device-specific schedule or block. If the router offers per-device internet access controls, apply the rule to the TV rather than the entire home. A full internet block can prevent streaming and online functions, so use it only if that trade-off is acceptable.
- Use a guest or IoT network for isolation. This can limit the TV’s access to other home devices while preserving internet access, provided the network actually isolates clients as intended. Check whether casting, discovery, or phone-based remote control still works.
- Use VLAN and firewall rules for more precise control. Where supported, these can separate the TV from other devices and restrict which destinations or services it can reach. A VLAN provides network separation; it does not, by itself, filter destinations. ASUS documents VLAN support on Wi-Fi 7 models with Guest Network Pro or ExpertWiFi products and describes an IoT Network feature, but availability and behavior are model-specific. Check ASUS documentation.
NIST describes a more specific least-privilege model called Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD): a device or manufacturer communicates the network traffic needed for the device’s intended function, and a capable network can permit that communication while blocking other traffic. NIST’s guide also describes rules for communication between local devices as well as external hosts. This is a network-security model, not a guarantee that a particular TV provides a MUD profile or that a home router supports it. Read NIST SP 1800-15.

Is DNS filtering enough?
DNS filtering can block requests to domains on a selected list when the TV uses the filtered resolver. It is a limited layer: lists can miss relevant domains or block the wrong ones, and devices may use a different DNS resolver. The 2019 study reported that 68% of smart TVs in its sample accessed Google DNS servers; its summary separately reported 72% for smart TVs using hard-coded Google DNS. These are distinct study measures and should not be treated as a current universal rate. See the study’s methods and results.
A firewall rule that denies all outbound access is stronger than a DNS blocklist, but may disable streaming, voice functions, casting, or updates. A segmented network can reduce access to other household devices without necessarily blocking internet access; confirm that local discovery and casting behave as you need.

What might stop working when I restrict the TV?
Before enforcing a deny rule, consider the functions tied to both internet access and local network communication:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Streaming apps and other online services may need internet access.
- Software updates may fail or be delayed while access is blocked.
- Casting, device discovery, and phone-based remote control may rely on local-network communication, which isolation can prevent.
- Voice features and other connected services may stop working if their required destinations are blocked.
Change one rule at a time and test the functions you care about. Keep a way to remove or reverse the rule—such as router administrator access—before applying it. NIST’s least-required-communications approach explains how restrictions can improve network security, but does not promise that a particular consumer setup will preserve every TV feature.
