To improve your website’s chances of appearing in AI-generated answers, first make sure key pages can be crawled, indexed, and shown with a search snippet. Then make those pages genuinely useful, accurate, distinctive, and easy to understand. Track Google and Microsoft separately: no technical fix or content tactic guarantees that an AI system will cite your site.
What “AI visibility” means for a website
AI visibility is whether relevant pages or business information appear, get cited, or are used in generated answers on a particular search or assistant platform. It is not one universal ranking or score: a page may be visible on one service and absent from another, and each platform’s reporting measures different things.
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says its generative features draw on the Search index and remain grounded in its existing Search systems. The page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, but eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or display. Google may also expand a prompt into related searches when assembling an answer. See Google’s AI features and website guidance.
Why a site may not appear in AI answers
The page is not discoverable or eligible
If important pages are blocked from crawling, absent from the index, poorly linked internally, or ineligible for a search snippet, they may not be available to Google’s AI features. Information that exists only in an image or other non-text element may also be harder for systems and readers to interpret. Check crawl access, index status, internal links, visible text, page experience, and whether structured data accurately reflects the page.
#1 Best Overall
The page adds little beyond generic summaries
A page that repeats familiar advice without original reporting, relevant expertise, concrete examples, or other added value gives readers little reason to prefer it as a source. Google recommends helpful, reliable, people-first content and cautions that producing many pages at scale without added value can violate its scaled content abuse policy. Its guide to generative AI features emphasizes unique, compelling, useful content over special formatting tricks.
The information is unclear, stale, or inconsistent
Conflicting business details, outdated product facts, or mismatches between visible page content and structured data can undermine clarity. For applicable product listings and local business information, keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current, and make sure the page and its structured data agree.

How to improve your chances of being cited
- Choose the pages that matter. Identify the pages that should answer important customer questions. Check their crawl access, index status, snippet eligibility, and internal links. In Google Search Console, use indexing and performance reports to investigate discoverability and traffic.
- Make the answer clear and complete. Address real reader questions directly, use accurate descriptive headings, and organize the page so people can find the relevant information. Keep key facts available as text rather than relying only on visual presentation.
- Add a reason to trust and use the page. Where genuinely available, include original reporting, expertise, first-hand experience, useful comparisons, or specific examples. Do not invent experience or publish near-duplicate pages to cover every imagined wording of a query.
- Keep factual details current. Update material claims when products, services, policies, or business details change. Ensure structured data matches what a visitor can see on the page.
- Review access controls before changing them. Google identifies robots.txt as the control for Googlebot’s access to Search crawling. Search preview controls include
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippet, andnoindex; these can limit what is shown or whether a page appears in Search. Google-Extended is a separate control for limiting use in some other Google systems. Choose controls with their visibility tradeoffs in mind; they do not create a citation advantage.
Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It does not require llms.txt, special AI markup, Markdown versions of pages, exact wording for every query variation, or a particular content chunk size for Google Search. Do not treat these as guaranteed ranking levers. Those statements apply to Google; they do not establish how every other AI product selects or cites material.
How to measure visibility on Google and Microsoft
Use first-party reporting where it is available, and interpret each report within its scope. Do not combine unrelated platform measures into a single “AI visibility” score without explaining what the score represents.

For a useful baseline, record the platform, date, geography and query set where available, then track the measures that each service actually exposes: cited pages, citation appearances, query or topic coverage, referral traffic, conversions, and brand mentions. Compare approaches by platform coverage, citation or mention reporting, context detail, date and geography controls, repeatability, and connection to site outcomes. These are practical comparison questions, not a standardized industry score.
Microsoft describes AI answers as dynamic and synthesized from multiple sources. Its reporting is intended to reveal citation patterns and context, not prove that a citation caused a visit, conversion, or sale. Interpret changes alongside relevant site outcomes. A rise in citations is not by itself evidence of higher rank, authority, clicks, or revenue. See Microsoft’s explanation of the AI visibility insights.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Claims to treat cautiously
- “This guarantees an AI citation.” No reviewed Google or Microsoft guidance establishes a change that guarantees citations or a quantified increase across platforms. Google explicitly says inclusion is not guaranteed.
- “SEO is obsolete.” Google says its generative Search features remain rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems.
- “One optimization works everywhere.” Google’s advice describes Google Search; Microsoft’s reporting describes supported Microsoft experiences. Neither establishes a universal formula for other assistants.
- “A tool can reveal the AI system’s internal ranking.” Google says third-party services do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Treat external monitoring as observation of reported outputs, not access to hidden system data.
