Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making a site more useful and eligible to appear in answers generated by AI search features. It can improve a page’s readiness to be retrieved, represented, or cited, but it cannot guarantee a citation. For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says GEO is still SEO: pages need to be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet, and the usual foundations of useful content and technical access still matter.

What GEO means in AI-first search

Traditional search often presents a ranked list of pages. A generative search feature may instead retrieve material from multiple sources and compose a response, sometimes linking to the pages it used. GEO describes efforts to improve a site’s visibility in those generated responses, including whether its pages are selected, represented accurately, and linked as sources.

The term is associated with research into generative engines, including Aggarwal and colleagues’ 2024 paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization”. The paper treats visibility as more than a conventional search ranking: a source’s citation position, how much of it is surfaced, and its relevance to the response can all affect exposure.

Google describes its generative features as using retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding. In AI Mode, a process called query fan-out can generate related searches to gather context for the original question. Other search and answer systems may retrieve and compose information differently, so Google’s documentation is guidance for Google Search—not a universal specification for every AI platform.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google Search Central’s position is explicit: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” Its AI features draw on core Search ranking and quality systems. GEO is best understood as an extension of search optimization for an experience in which answers may synthesize sources rather than only display a list of results.

For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to be eligible for generative AI features. Eligibility is not inclusion: Google also states, “Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.”

What to do to improve the chance of being included

Publish material that adds something

Build pages around a genuine reader need and contribute information beyond a rephrasing of what is already common. Google recommends original perspective, reliable people-first content, and first-hand experience where it is relevant. Specific explanations, evidence, useful examples, and accurate details give readers—and retrieval systems—more substance to work with than near-duplicate pages produced at scale.

Keep pages accessible to Search

Check that important public pages can be crawled and that ordinary technical SEO is sound. For Google’s generative features, indexing and snippet eligibility are prerequisites; neither one guarantees that a page will be served. A page hidden from crawling or blocked from snippet display cannot rely on GEO wording to overcome that access problem.

Organize information for people

Use descriptive headings and readable sections so visitors can find and understand the material. Google says there is “no ideal page length” and no requirement to split pages into tiny chunks for AI. Write to cover the question fully rather than targeting a prescribed word count or fragment size.

Use media and structured data when they serve the page

Relevant images and video can help a page communicate and may be surfaced in search experiences where appropriate. Structured data can support ordinary Search features when it accurately describes the page and follows Google’s rules, but Google does not require special GEO schema or structured data to appear in its generative features.

Keep business and product details current

For local businesses and ecommerce, accurate public information matters. Google points businesses to Google Business Profile and Merchant Center to manage information that may appear in Search and AI responses.

Use AI assistance with editorial oversight

AI tools can help with research or structure, but generated text can be wrong. Google warns that “Generative AI outputs may contain inaccuracies (also known as hallucinations)” and calls for manual fact-checking. Producing pages at scale without adding value may violate Google’s scaled content abuse policy; the relevant question is the value and quality of the published material, not whether AI assisted with drafting.

Which GEO shortcuts are unsupported for Google?

Google says its Search generative features do not require a special llms.txt file, AI-specific rewriting, or mandatory content chunking. It also discourages inauthentic mentions intended to manipulate visibility. These are Google-specific statements; they should not be treated as proof of how every other platform works.

Clear structure and accessible content can help users regardless, but they are not a secret citation formula. Focus effort on useful pages, reliable information, and normal technical eligibility rather than claims of a guaranteed AI citation tactic.

What the GEO research does—and does not—show

Aggarwal and colleagues’ paper, published in the Proceedings of the 30th ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining in 2024, introduced GEO-bench and tested content-optimization methods. It reported visibility improvements of up to 40% across evaluated queries, and up to 37% on Perplexity in its real-world engine evaluation.

Those are maximum experimental results under the paper’s tested conditions, not an average forecast, a promise of more website traffic, or a result that can be assumed for today’s systems and every topic. The authors note that effectiveness varies by domain. Treat the findings as evidence that content changes can affect visibility in tested settings, not as a dependable percentage uplift for an individual publisher.

How to measure AI-search visibility

Choose a measurement that matches the platform and outcome. A citation, an unlinked mention, a visit from a generative feature, and a composite visibility score are different things; one does not automatically establish another.

For Google’s own generative features, Google recommends the Search Console Generative AI performance report. That report is specific to Google and should not be read as a measure of performance in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or every AI assistant. Google also cautions: “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” Outside tools can help organize observations, but their scores are not Google’s internal ranking signals.

If you evaluate a monitoring service, check what it actually measures and how consistently it checks. Useful reports should identify the platforms covered, distinguish citations from mentions or traffic, record repeatable prompt and locale conditions, and show source URLs or actionable findings rather than only an opaque score. Be wary of promises of guaranteed citations or access to proprietary platform signals.

What a realistic GEO strategy looks like

For a publisher, GEO is not a replacement discipline with a guaranteed formula. It is the practical work of making strong pages discoverable, eligible, clear, accurate, and worth using as sources—then measuring each platform’s observable outcomes without confusing a tool score or an experimental benchmark with a promised business result.
