When a Ring device shows as offline, start with its status in the Ring app, then check power, Wi-Fi and internet access before considering a reset. An offline camera or doorbell may stop providing live video, alerts and event recordings, but the app’s Device Health screen can help pinpoint whether the problem is the device, its power or its network connection.

What “offline” means—and where to check first

Open the Ring app and inspect the device tile. An offline icon may appear over a camera tile; tapping it can show an error code and suggested troubleshooting. You can also open the device’s settings and select Device Health to see its current status. Confirm that the device is actually marked offline before treating a failed live view as proof of a device outage: check whether other devices on your home network can connect, too.

Ring’s offline-device guidance says an offline device cannot provide live video, alerts or event recordings. The precise recovery steps depend on the Ring product and model; Device Health can help identify the model when you need model-specific directions.

Try the app’s reconnect flow

For a camera or doorbell, open the device’s settings, select Device Health, and look under Network for Reconnect or Change Network. Follow the app prompts and pay attention to the device’s light pattern or audio cue during the process.

Ring Bridge (Newest Model) — Wider coverage for Ring smart lights and compatible devices
  • Extend smart light coverage range — Keep your Ring smart lights connected to Amazon Sidewalk, even if they’re outside the range of your home wifi.
  • Control in the Ring app — Use Ring Bridge to easily connect your Ring smart lights to the Ring app. When synced, Ring smart lights and accessories work better together by turning on when your cameras or doorbell detect motion and more.
  • Connect with Alexa — Ring Bridge helps connect your Ring smart lights to select Alexa-enabled devices so you can turn on the lights, adjust brightness, and more with just your voice — or know when other Ring devices detect motion.

If you recently changed your Wi-Fi name or password, router, or internet provider, use Change Network to update the device’s connection. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guidance covers network changes and setup issues.

Check the device’s power and battery

  • Battery-powered device: Check its charge and whether it powers on. A depleted battery can look like a connectivity problem.
  • Plug-in device: Check that it is receiving power from the correct supply for that model.
  • Hardwired device: Check the power source and transformer against the requirements for that specific model.
  • Alarm Base Station: Follow the Alarm-specific checks below; its backup and recovery behavior differs from that of a camera or doorbell.

Do not buy a replacement battery or transformer based only on an offline status. First identify the model and establish that the existing power component is depleted, faulty or incompatible.

Check Wi-Fi coverage and internet access

  1. Test the connection at home. Connect a phone to the same Wi-Fi network and confirm it can access the internet. If it cannot, troubleshoot the internet connection before changing the Ring device’s settings.
  2. Restart the modem and router. Disconnect their power for about 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for the network to come back before checking the Ring device again.
  3. Check signal where the device is installed. If practical, temporarily move the device closer to the router. A better connection there points toward a coverage problem at the installed location.
  4. Check the Wi-Fi band for the exact model. All Ring devices support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; only some also support 5 GHz. Check the model before changing bands or network settings. Ring’s product information covers device compatibility.
  5. Consider router setup. Multiple routers can cause connection problems; Ring suggests using one router or asking your internet provider or router manufacturer about bridge mode. An encryption incompatibility can also produce a setup error on some models, which is different from weak signal. Check Ring’s current instructions for the specific model before changing router security settings; do not weaken security as a blanket fix.

Reboot carefully; save factory reset for last

Ring’s in-app reboot option requires the device to be connected to Wi-Fi. If it is offline, the physical power-cycle method depends on whether the product has removable batteries, an internal battery, plug-in power or hardwired power. Use the instructions for the exact model in Ring’s reboot guide.

A power cycle is not the same as a factory reset. A reset can require setting up the device again, so try the app reconnect flow, power and network checks, and model-specific reboot instructions first. Ring’s general offline troubleshooting guidance discusses reset as a later recovery step.

If a Ring Alarm Base Station or sensor is offline

Alarm devices have distinct recovery steps. For the Base Station, check that it has power, see whether other Wi-Fi devices are online, and try its network settings in the app. Where possible, connect the Base Station directly to the router with Ethernet. Ring’s Alarm and Z-Wave troubleshooting instructions distinguish Base Station recovery from reconnecting or reconfiguring a Z-Wave sensor.

Be especially cautious with the Base Station’s reset pinhole: Ring says a quick press and release reboots it, while holding the pinhole can factory reset it. Ring advises contacting Customer Support before attempting a Base Station factory reset.

2026 WiFi Extender Wireless Long Range Amplifier
  • Better extend wireless signals
  • 2 high-gain antennas maximize your network quality
  • Complies with FCC and IEEE802.11b/g/n standards
  • Setup can also be completed within 3 minutes via your mobile device’s web browser
  • Offers dedicated technical support for all your needs

During battery backup, Ring says the Base Station operates normally for 15 minutes, then shuts off other features to preserve battery while continuing to monitor sensors and send alarm signals. Ring states that battery power can last up to 24 hours depending on usage. These figures describe the Base Station’s battery-backup behavior, not cameras, doorbells or every Alarm scenario. Cellular backup requires a compatible Ring subscription, and a network or power issue can affect app access and control even if Alarm monitoring continues. See Ring’s Alarm outage guidance for the conditions.

When a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system may help

Consider network hardware only after you have ruled out a depleted battery, lost power, internet outage and changed network credentials. If the phone connects at home but the Ring device struggles at its installed location, weak coverage is a more plausible cause. Ring identifies Chime Pro as a signal-boosting option and also mentions a mesh router, such as eero, for distant devices.

Choose based on the problem you have established: whether Wi-Fi is weak only near the Ring device or across multiple parts of the home, and whether the option is compatible with your specific Ring model and current router. An extender may suit a single weak area; a mesh system is aimed at broader home coverage. Ring’s guidance does not establish one universally best option, and new hardware will not fix a dead battery, power loss, internet outage, changed password or encryption mismatch.
