Most modern CPUs turbo automatically: when a supported processor has work to do and enough thermal and power headroom, it can raise its clock above base frequency. You usually do not need an app or manual overclock. If boost seems low, identify your exact processor and computer first, then check support, firmware, temperature, and power limits.
What CPU turbo does—and what it does not promise
“Turbo” or “boost” describes a processor opportunistically operating above its base frequency. Intel describes Turbo Boost as automatically running a processor core faster than its marked frequency, within power, temperature, and specification limits. Intel’s overview was last reviewed on February 6, 2025.
AMD’s Precision Boost 2 is a separate technology with a similar automatic purpose: it raises frequency when workload demand and operating headroom allow. AMD’s Precision Boost 2 guidance covers setup considerations such as thermal paste and processor temperature. The two vendors’ names are not interchangeable, and their controls and limits depend on the processor and platform.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA processor’s published maximum turbo or boost frequency is a peak capability, not a guaranteed clock for every task or for an entire session. The actual frequency can vary with the number of active cores, workload, temperature, available power and current, and system design. A low reading at idle—or during a task that does not need much processing—does not by itself indicate a problem.

Check whether your CPU and computer support boost
Before changing settings or buying parts, note the exact processor model and whether the machine is a laptop, prebuilt desktop, or self-built PC. Look up the processor specification and the manufacturer’s support information for the complete computer or motherboard. Do not assume every processor in a family offers the same feature or that every system exposes the same controls.
For Intel processors, Intel’s Turbo Boost overview explains the feature and its limits. For AMD Ryzen processors, consult AMD’s Precision Boost 2 FAQ. Use the instructions for your precise model and platform; there is no universal BIOS value or setting to apply across systems.

- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
Diagnose low or inconsistent boost safely
- Confirm the feature and model. Record the full CPU model and system model, then verify that the processor supports its vendor’s boost technology.
- Check firmware settings. If the computer’s firmware provides a Turbo or boost option, check whether it is enabled. Intel says the option is generally enabled by default when available, but menu names and access vary. Follow your computer or motherboard maker’s instructions rather than changing unrelated settings.
- Measure during the workload that concerns you. Compare clock behavior and temperature while running the same kind of task—not just at idle. A light or single-threaded task and a sustained multi-core workload can produce different frequencies.
- Look for thermal or power constraints. If temperatures rise or the system reaches configured power or current limits, boost may be reduced. Cooling capacity, power delivery, and system policies can all affect the result. Intel’s troubleshooting guidance, last reviewed June 24, 2024, discusses these checks.
- Inspect cooling only when evidence points to heat. In a self-built desktop, check that the cooler is compatible and mounted correctly, fans operate, and airflow is unobstructed. Apply or replace thermal paste as appropriate when installing or servicing a cooler. A cooler change is not a general-purpose way to raise clocks if temperature is not the limiting factor.
- Handle firmware updates cautiously. Consider updating firmware or restoring defaults only according to the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s directions. Save or note any settings you need before a reset.
Why there is no single “maximum performance” setting
Boost behavior depends on both processor capability and system policy. Operating-system performance-state requests, firmware configuration, power limits, cooling, and the task itself can affect the frequency observed. Intel’s explainer on how Intel technologies boost CPU performance discusses performance in context; exact controls still depend on the system.
For that reason, do not force a particular clock target, temperature limit, or BIOS value based only on a generic guide. A laptop, a prebuilt desktop, and a custom-built PC can have different cooling and power designs even when they use processors with similar names. Diagnose the actual limit before changing hardware or configuration.

When a cooler upgrade makes sense
A compatible CPU cooler can help if testing shows the processor is thermally constrained, but it cannot remove a power limit or guarantee a particular frequency gain. Check the CPU socket, case clearance, cooler installation requirements, and the system maker’s compatibility guidance before choosing a part. For laptops and many prebuilt systems, use the manufacturer’s service guidance rather than assuming a desktop-style cooler can be replaced.
