If your brand is missing from ChatGPT answers, first check whether OpenAI’s search crawler can reach your site. OpenAI says public websites can appear in ChatGPT Search, but eligibility does not guarantee a mention: the relevant pages must be crawlable, and ChatGPT must select them for the query.

Work through these seven checks in order. The first three address access conditions in OpenAI’s published guidance; the remaining checks help diagnose exclusions, query fit, and expectations rather than reveal a guaranteed ranking formula.

1. Check whether robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot

Open the live robots.txt file for your domain and review the rules that apply to the pages you want ChatGPT Search to find. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so site content can be considered for Search summaries and snippets.

Look for a rule that disallows the crawler, such as:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Disallow: /

If that rule is intentional, it tells the crawler not to access the site. If you want the relevant pages to be eligible, revise the applicable rules so they do not disallow OAI-SearchBot. Check the actual live file after publishing the change; a rule in a staging copy or a different host’s robots file will not fix the production site.

OpenAI’s publisher guidance explains that robots.txt permission is a crawl-access step, not a promise that a page will appear in an answer.

2. Check firewall, hosting, and CDN access

A permissive robots.txt file is not enough if your host, firewall, bot-protection layer, or content delivery network blocks the crawler’s requests. OpenAI’s Search guidance separately says site owners should allow traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses.

Review security and access logs for blocked requests, then check the rules in each layer between the public internet and your site. If you manage a CDN or web application firewall, confirm that its policy does not challenge or deny the relevant crawler traffic. An allow rule in robots.txt does not override a network-level block.

Use OpenAI’s published searchbot IP list when configuring an allow rule; do not rely on an IP range copied from an old third-party post. The guidance identifies the IP access requirement, but it does not establish that a successful request will make a page rank or be cited.

3. Verify you are checking the Search crawler, not GPTBot

OpenAI discusses OAI-SearchBot in its Search eligibility guidance and GPTBot separately in its guidance about training-data preferences. They serve different stated purposes. A GPTBot setting alone does not establish whether ChatGPT Search can crawl your pages.

Check your robots.txt rules, access controls, and server logs for OAI-SearchBot specifically. If your goal is to affect Search access, make the decision based on the Search crawler rather than assuming a GPTBot rule controls it.

4. Review noindex directives and other page exclusions

Inspect the pages that should represent your brand for a page-level noindex directive and for broader exclusions applied by your content management system or site configuration. A page that is intentionally excluded from indexing may not be a useful candidate for a Search result.

OpenAI says it needs permission to crawl a page to read its noindex meta tag. Its guidance also notes a limited case involving ChatGPT Atlas: if a disallowed URL is discovered elsewhere and relevance signals exist, Atlas may show only the page’s title and link. If you do not want that limited display, use noindex as OpenAI describes; do not treat it as a way to secure a full Search listing.

5. Test more than one realistic customer query

One answer is weak evidence that a brand is categorically absent. Try several prompts a prospective customer might actually use, including variations in product or service, location, and the problem being solved. Keep the wording and date of each test so you can compare results consistently.

For each response, record whether your brand is named, whether a page from your site is cited, and whether a title-and-link result appears without a citation. These distinctions help separate a missing citation from a page that is not being surfaced at all. This is a practical way to investigate visibility, not an OpenAI-published ranking requirement.

6. Check whether the page actually answers the prompt

If the crawler can reach your site but ChatGPT does not select it, compare the tested question with the public page you expect to appear. Does that page clearly explain the relevant product or service, the geography it covers, and the evidence a reader would need to assess it?

Make the important information explicit and useful to a human visitor rather than relying on a brand name alone. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search uses multiple factors intended to find relevant and reliable results, but its public guidance does not disclose a complete ranking formula or establish that any one editorial change will cause a brand to appear.

7. Treat crawl eligibility as access, not a visibility guarantee

Allowing the Search crawler and removing access blocks make content eligible to be considered; they do not guarantee that ChatGPT will mention your brand for a particular prompt. OpenAI’s Help Center states, “Placement is not guaranteed.” It also describes Search as using multiple factors to find relevant and reliable results.

Monitor what happens rather than promising a particular answer position. OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help publishers identify inbound visits in their analytics. Referral traffic can show that some users arrived from ChatGPT, but it cannot by itself measure every mention or citation.

Compare a page that appears with one that does not

When investigating two pages or brands, use the same prompt and compare the observable conditions below. The first three are technical access checks; prompt fit and result type are diagnostic observations, not disclosed ranking factors.

What to compare What to check
robots.txt Whether the rules allow OAI-SearchBot to access the relevant pages.
Host and CDN access Whether the site’s network and security layers allow OpenAI’s published searchbot IP addresses.
Page exclusions Whether a page has a noindex directive or another exclusion that limits its availability.
Prompt and page fit Whether the public page directly covers the subject, service, or location named in the query.
Observed result Whether the response includes a citation, a title-and-link result, or no visible result for the site.

What the published guidance does—and does not—establish

OpenAI’s publisher FAQ and Search guidance establish that public websites may appear, that allowing OAI-SearchBot and allowing its published searchbot IP traffic are relevant access steps, and that placement is not assured. They do not provide a complete ranking formula, a statistic for how often brands are omitted, or a measured visibility increase from making a particular technical change. Avoid treating any one fix as a guaranteed route to a mention.
