Yes, an access point can broadcast Wi-Fi without a separate router, but that alone does not provide internet access. For ordinary home or small-office internet, a router or equivalent gateway must route traffic to the internet and usually assign devices their local network settings. An access point adds wireless access to that network.

What an access point can—and cannot—do by itself

An access point (AP) lets wireless devices connect to a wired or bridged network. A router or gateway routes traffic between networks and provides the path from your local network to the internet. A residential ISP gateway may combine routing, Wi-Fi access-point, and modem or ONT functions in one unit.

Some APs can emit a Wi-Fi signal and accept local wireless connections without a separate router. That establishes only a wireless link; it does not establish internet access or guarantee that clients receive usable IP addresses. A client may connect to the Wi-Fi name yet have no route to the internet.

In AP or bridge mode, the device generally bridges wireless clients to the existing network rather than routing for them. DHCP—the service that assigns IP addresses and other network settings—is normally provided by the upstream router. Synology says its AP mode cannot select routes or assign local-network IP addresses, while MikroTik documents an AP bridging clients’ DHCP requests to the router. Synology’s SRM operation-mode guidance and MikroTik’s standalone AP documentation describe these product-specific behaviors.

Which setup are you trying to make?

Setup What happens Best fit
Existing router or gateway plus AP The router supplies routing and typically DHCP; the AP extends wireless access. Adding Wi-Fi coverage to a network that already has internet service.
AP with no router or upstream service The AP may broadcast Wi-Fi and allow local association, depending on the model and configuration. Internet access and normal client addressing are not assured. A limited local connection or model-specific setup, not ordinary internet access.
Old router configured as an AP It bridges wireless and wired devices to another router. Routing features may be disabled or unavailable. Reusing hardware to add wireless access to an existing network.
Integrated wireless router One device combines routing and Wi-Fi access, and may also include modem or ONT functions. A network where one unit provides both the gateway and wireless connection.

How to connect a dedicated AP to a network

  1. Confirm that an upstream gateway is working. Check that the existing router or ISP gateway provides internet access and local network services.
  2. Check the AP’s operating mode and requirements. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for its uplink port, power source, and setup method. Port roles and power requirements differ by model.
  3. Connect the AP to the existing network. Use the specified Ethernet connection or supported uplink method. In a typical wired AP setup, the router remains responsible for routing and DHCP.
  4. Configure the wireless network. Follow the vendor’s app, browser, or other setup instructions. Confirm that a client can join Wi-Fi and reach the internet.

A cable is relevant when the AP uses a wired uplink; do not assume every AP uses the same port arrangement or power method.

Can you use an old router as an access point?

Often, yes. If the old router offers a dedicated AP mode, use that mode and follow its model-specific instructions. Some devices instead require a manual configuration, such as disabling their DHCP server. TP-Link documents both AP-mode differences and a legacy DHCP-disable approach for certain models; that does not mean the same steps or port choice apply to every router. TP-Link’s mode guide explains the distinctions.

Before changing settings, identify which device will remain the gateway and check the old router’s instructions for its uplink port. Depending on the implementation, a WAN port may be repurposed or disabled. AP mode can also remove gateway-dependent functions such as routing, NAT, firewall controls, or other features; confirm what the exact model retains.

Does a standalone AP need a controller?

Not necessarily. “Standalone” can mean that an AP can be configured without a centralized controller; it does not mean that the AP replaces the router or independently supplies internet access. Controller requirements and available features vary by product.

TP-Link Omada documents app- or browser-based setup for standalone APs while noting that some advanced features are unavailable without an Omada Controller. Ubiquiti likewise documents standalone configuration with limitations and states that a UniFi AP cannot connect directly to the internet without a gateway/router, apart from the integrated products it excludes. Omada’s standalone setup guide and Ubiquiti’s standalone AP guidance clarify these product-specific limits.

What to check before choosing a setup

  • Internet or local-only use: If clients need internet access, identify the gateway that will provide their route upstream.
  • Routing and DHCP: Confirm which device will route traffic and assign client network settings.
  • Uplink: Check whether the AP needs a wired connection or supports another uplink, and follow the model’s port instructions.
  • Power: Verify the supported power method for the particular AP; do not assume a separate injector is always required.
  • Configuration and management: Check whether setup requires an app, browser, or controller, and which features are limited without a controller.
  • Features in AP mode: If you are reusing a router, check whether guest isolation, VPN, parental controls, QoS, firewall, or other gateway functions will remain available.
