Windows 11 splits power controls between the Settings app and the older Control Panel interface. For screen timeout, sleep, Energy saver, and Power mode, use Settings > System > Power & battery. For the full per-plan tree—including options for processor power management, USB settings, wireless adapters, and sleep behavior—open the classic Power Options window.

The quickest route to that advanced window is:

Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings

Open advanced power settings through Control Panel

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type control and press Enter.
  3. In Control Panel, select Hardware and Sound.
  4. Under Power Options, select Change plan settings.
  5. Find the power plan currently in use and select Change advanced power settings.

The Power Options dialog opens with an Advanced settings tab. Expand the categories in the tree, choose a setting, select its value for On battery or Plugged in, and select Apply, then OK.

Use the current Windows 11 power page for ordinary controls

If you only need to change the common power options, you do not need the classic dialog:

On Windows 11 version 25H2 and later, Windows may show an Advanced page at Settings > System > Advanced. This page contains developer-related settings formerly associated with For developers. It is unrelated to Change advanced power settings.

For power-plan settings, use the Control Panel route instead.

Open the power-plan window with a command

You can launch the classic Power Options page directly:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Enter powercfg.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.

Windows opens the Power Options page. Select Change plan settings beside the relevant plan, then select Change advanced power settings.

powercfg /query scheme_GUID

Or query a specific subgroup:

Replace the placeholder values with the GUIDs shown by powercfg /list and powercfg /query. The output includes the setting GUIDs and the valid index values, which are required when changing a setting from the command line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Change a setting from the command line

To set a value while the computer is plugged in, use:

powercfg /setacvalueindex scheme_GUID sub_GUID setting_GUID setting_index

For battery or DC power, use:

powercfg /setdcvalueindex scheme_GUID sub_GUID setting_GUID setting_index

Changing a value does not necessarily activate that scheme. If you modified a scheme that is not currently active, activate it with:

powercfg /setactive scheme_GUID

Use powercfg /? to display the command’s built-in help and syntax. Be careful when copying GUIDs and index values: an incorrect value can modify a different setting or produce an error.

Why an advanced power option may be missing

The advanced tree is not identical on every Windows 11 computer. Available entries depend on the hardware, firmware, drivers, OEM configuration, Windows power-policy implementation, and supported sleep model.

The most important case is Modern Standby. On Modern Standby systems, Windows removes many traditional power-policy entries from the Advanced settings interface. Microsoft documents a more limited set of displayed policies, including:

  • Desktop background slideshow
  • Battery levels and actions
  • Sleep, display, and hibernate timeouts

Traditional ACPI S3/S4 systems may expose additional categories that do not appear on a Modern Standby laptop. This is why options such as USB settings, Wireless Adapter Settings, Processor power management, or Hard disk may be absent.

A missing option does not automatically mean that Windows is hiding it, and upgrading from Windows Home to Pro is not a documented way to restore hardware policies that the device does not support. A registry tweak cannot create a power policy that the firmware and platform do not expose.

  1. Open Terminal or Command Prompt.
  2. Run:

When Windows refuses to save a change

Power settings can be controlled by local or domain Group Policy. A work-managed computer may therefore display a setting but reject changes to it. PowerCfg.exe reports an error when a change is blocked by permissions or a policy override.

Try these checks:

  1. Make sure you are changing the intended plan and power state—On battery versus Plugged in.
  2. Open Terminal or Command Prompt as an administrator and retry the command if the setting requires elevation.
  3. Run powercfg /getactivescheme to verify which plan is active.
  4. On a work or school PC, contact the administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

The Control Panel Power Options app changes ordinary plan settings; it does not configure power-policy permissions. Policy and permission changes are handled through PowerCfg and administrative policy management.

FAQ

Where are advanced power settings in Windows 11?

Open Control Panel and go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings. Select Change advanced power settings to open the classic Advanced settings tree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an Advanced power settings page in Windows 11 Settings?

No separate full advanced-power tree is provided in Settings. Settings > System > Power & battery contains the current user-facing controls, while the full advanced tree remains in Control Panel.

Why is Processor power management missing?

The available advanced settings depend on the computer’s hardware, firmware, drivers, OEM configuration, and sleep model. Modern Standby systems commonly omit many traditional entries, including processor, USB, wireless-adapter, and hard-disk options.

What command opens Power Options?

Press Windows key + R, type powercfg.cpl, and press Enter.

Can Windows 11 Home show advanced power settings?

The classic Power Options interface is not limited to Windows Pro. However, whether a particular advanced entry appears depends mainly on the device’s supported power policies and sleep implementation, not simply on the Windows edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For the full advanced power-policy tree, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Use Settings > System > Power & battery for normal screen, sleep, Energy saver, and Power mode controls. If an expected option is missing, check the supported sleep states with powercfg /a; Modern Standby and hardware or firmware limitations are common reasons.
