To get the Spider Crab Shell in How to Fish, give Beer to the lighthouse keeper, use the Empty Beer Can he gives you to summon Spider Crab, defeat the boss, then take the shell back to the keeper. The shell—not the ordinary meat drop—is the item exchanged for Boat Keys.
What you need before you start
The quest takes place on Island 1 and requires Beer and the Empty Beer Can it unlocks. Game Playbook’s route, reviewed against Patch 1.0.12 on September 5, 2026, reports a $3 Crab-Fishing Rod and $12 Beer; prices and shop labels may differ in your current game build, so check them in-game.
You will also need to fight Spider Crab after summoning it. The guides do not establish a specific weapon requirement, but recommend using short attacks during the boss’s stun opening rather than standing still and trading hits.

How to get the Spider Crab Shell
- Buy Beer on Island 1. Earn enough in-game money and purchase Beer. If the shop prices or item labels in your build differ from a guide, follow the in-game listing.
- Give the Beer to the lighthouse keeper. The keeper, also described in guides as the fisherman, returns an Empty Beer Can.
- Use the Empty Beer Can as bait. Equip or use the can, cast, and reel in Spider Crab. The Empty Beer Can is the documented summoning item; ordinary bait is not the stated route.
- Defeat Spider Crab. Guides recommend dodging its charge, waiting for its visible stun, landing a few melee hits, and retreating before it recovers. NerdsChalk reports 750 health and a brief stun after the crab ends up on its back; treat that figure and behavior as guide-reported, not independently verified game data.
- Pick up the shell. After the fight, collect Spider Crab Shell from the ground. The shell and the crab’s meat are separate drops.
- Return the shell to the keeper. Interact with the keeper while carrying the shell to receive Boat Keys.
What the shell and Boat Keys are used for
The shell’s primary documented purpose is the keeper’s quest hand-in, which rewards Boat Keys and advances you beyond the starting island. The keys grant boat access; they are not a boat-speed upgrade. Engine upgrades are separate purchases described for later islands.

Boat Keys and Radar are different items. The keys provide access to the boat, while Radar is a separate navigation item that guides say you need before sailing to the next island.
A fan reference updated September 2, 2026, and checked against Patch 1.0.11 also says boss trophies, including Spider Crab Shell, can be used with the Reel of Fortune, consuming the trophy. That is an optional use, not a substitute for the keeper’s required exchange. Keep the shell until you have received the Boat Keys.

If the quest is stuck
- The keeper will not accept your item: Check your inventory for Spider Crab Shell. Ordinary crab meat is not the quest trophy.
- Spider Crab does not appear: Make sure you gave Beer to the keeper and are using the returned Empty Beer Can, rather than ordinary bait.
- You have the keys but cannot sail onward: Get Radar separately; the keys and Radar serve different roles.
- You are considering selling or consuming the shell: Prioritize the keeper hand-in. The boss-drop reference lists the shell’s sale value as $0 and warns that the optional Reel of Fortune use consumes it.
How reliable are the guide details?
The route is consistent across unofficial walkthroughs, but prices, item labels, health, and combat behavior can change between builds. Game Playbook says its route was reviewed against Patch 1.0.12 on September 5, 2026; NerdsChalk’s guide was updated August 24, 2026; and the fan reference’s trophy details were checked against Patch 1.0.11.
