Defeat the Ender Dragon, then collect the egg from the top of the End exit portal without mining it directly. A direct hit makes the egg teleport. The safest method is to cover the portal, place a torch beneath the egg, break its supporting block, and let gravity drop the egg onto the torch so it becomes an item.
What the dragon egg is and when it appears
The dragon egg is a trophy awarded for defeating the Ender Dragon. After the dragon dies, the egg appears on top of the bedrock structure surrounding the End exit portal. It is not a normal block that you can break with a pickaxe. The game treats it as a teleporting block until you trigger the correct falling-block mechanic.

The exit portal is the return route from the End. That makes the collection area dangerous: an egg converted into an item can fall through the portal opening and become very difficult or impossible to recover. Protect the opening before you try to move the egg.
Materials and preparation
The torch method needs only a torch and ordinary blocks for temporary protection. The torch can be taken from the exit portal frame. You can substitute another non-full block, such as a bottom slab, button, or pressure plate. A piston method requires a piston plus a lever or another redstone power source.

Safety checklist
- Defeat the Ender Dragon and wait for the exit portal and egg to finish appearing.
- Bring blocks to cover the portal opening before creating the item drop.
- Make sure you can stand safely while digging below the egg.
- Keep space available around the egg so a teleport does not place it somewhere inaccessible.
- Prepare a secure destination, such as an ender chest or a protected trophy room.
Safest method: make the egg fall onto a torch
This is the inexpensive, redstone-free method. The egg does not need to be mined. You remove the block supporting it, and gravity makes the egg fall onto a block that occupies less than a full block. The collision causes the egg to break into an item.
- Defeat the dragon. Wait until the End exit portal and dragon egg are present on the central bedrock structure.
- Cover the portal. Place solid blocks over the portal opening or otherwise block the route an item could take into it. Do this before you disturb the egg.
- Move the egg away from the opening if needed. If the egg is positioned directly over the portal, touch it once so it teleports onto nearby end stone or another solid block. Follow its teleport particles and locate the new position. Do not keep punching it; every hit can make it teleport again.
- Identify the supporting block. The egg is sitting on a solid block. You will remove that block after preparing the space below it.
- Dig down for an empty space. Create room below the supporting block so the egg has a clear path to fall. Stay aware of the edge of the portal and do not remove the protective cover.
- Place a torch two blocks below the egg. Put the torch in the prepared space. A torch from the portal frame works, but a bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or another non-full block can perform the same job.
- Break the supporting block. Remove the solid block directly beneath the egg. The egg falls because it is no longer supported.
- Let the egg land. When the falling egg reaches the torch or other non-full block, it breaks into a dragon-egg item instead of remaining a block.
- Pick up and store the item. Collect it immediately and move it to an ender chest or a protected display area.
Why the torch works
The egg can remain placed only while it has a supporting block. A torch and the other listed substitutes do not fill a complete block space. When the supporting block is removed, the egg falls into that space and converts to an item. This is why breaking the support, rather than attacking the egg, is the important action.

Alternative method: use a powered piston
A piston offers a more controlled push but costs more preparation. It can push the egg and make it drop as an item.
- Cover the End exit portal opening with solid blocks.
- Place a piston so its face points directly at the egg.
- Connect the piston to a lever or another redstone power source.
- Activate the power source. The piston pushes the egg, causing it to become an item.
- Pick up the item and store it away from the portal.
Check the piston’s orientation before powering it. The pushing face must point toward the egg; powering a piston aimed elsewhere will not collect the egg. The portal cover remains essential because the item can otherwise fall through the opening.

Torch versus piston: which method should you use?
| Collection method | Materials | Safety around portal | Precision | Edition compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Torch or other non-full block | Torch, bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or similar block | Very safe when the portal is covered; no redstone movement | Requires digging below the support and removing the correct block | Works with the normal falling-block mechanic; identify your edition and version if behavior differs |
| Powered piston | Piston, lever or other redstone power source | Controlled push, but the portal still must be covered | Fast and direct when the piston is correctly aligned | Uses the piston collection mechanic; edition and version can affect unusual behavior |
Choose the torch method when you want the fewest materials and no redstone. Choose a piston when you already have redstone supplies and prefer a direct, controlled push.
Why mining the egg does not work
Hitting the egg is not equivalent to mining an ordinary block. A strike makes it teleport to another nearby location, producing teleport particles and leaving the original spot empty. Tools do not solve this problem. Repeatedly attacking the egg only creates more opportunities for it to move toward an unsafe edge or the portal.
Use one intentional touch only when you need to move the egg away from the portal. Once it is on a safe solid block, stop hitting it and use the torch or piston procedure.
What to do if the egg keeps teleporting
It moved after one hit
Look for the teleport particles and inspect nearby end stone and other solid blocks. The egg usually relocates within the surrounding area rather than disappearing. Once found, approach it without striking it again, cover the portal, and prepare the falling-block setup at its new location.

You keep hitting it accidentally
Stop swinging and reposition yourself. Build a temporary walkway or barrier so you can work from the side, then interact only with the supporting block, torch, or piston. The collection action is not a series of attacks; it is a single support-removal or piston activation.
It is near an edge
Place temporary solid blocks around the work area, leaving only the intended falling path open. These blocks reduce the chance that a teleport or item drop reaches the portal opening or a deep gap.
If the egg falls into the exit portal
The portal is the main failure point. An egg item that drops into it can be difficult or impossible to recover, so prevention is more reliable than rescue. Cover the portal before removing the support or activating the piston.
If the egg has not yet become an item, stop and cover the opening immediately. If the item has already gone through, vanilla gameplay does not provide a dependable recovery procedure; whether anything can be retrieved depends on where the item was sent and the edition’s behavior. Do not keep punching the replacement location, because that can create another unsafe teleport.

Java and Bedrock egg counts
The number of eggs depends on the edition and on how many times the dragon is defeated. Minecraft’s official guidance states that Java Edition normally provides one dragon egg, while Bedrock Edition can provide a second egg after defeating the Ender Dragon twice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Edition | Egg availability described by official guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | One egg from the normal dragon defeat | Protect and collect the first egg carefully; there is normally no second one from a repeat defeat |
| Bedrock Edition | Up to two eggs after two dragon defeats | A second defeat can provide another egg under the stated Bedrock behavior |
Edition behavior can change between game versions. If a second egg does not appear, verify the edition and version before assuming the collection method failed. The first egg still uses the same portal-safety and falling-block principles.

Once it has become an item, pick it up before continuing to build around the portal. An ender chest is a compact protected option for transport and storage. For display, use a trophy room away from the End exit portal, with walls or glass that prevent accidental movement and a clear label identifying the edition and defeat that produced it.
The egg has no stated gameplay function beyond being a trophy or decorative object. Its value is its rarity and visual role, not a crafting or combat ability. Treat it as a keepsake rather than as a resource you need for another recipe.

Common mistakes and fixes
Breaking the egg directly
Symptom: The egg vanishes from its original position and appears elsewhere.
Fix: Stop striking it. Locate it by following teleport particles, then remove its supporting block onto a torch, slab, button, or pressure plate.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Skipping the portal cover
Symptom: The item drop lands in the exit portal.
Fix: Prepare the cover before using either method. A post-drop recovery is not guaranteed.
Placing the torch at the wrong height
Symptom: The egg remains supported or does not fall onto the non-full block.
Fix: Recheck the geometry: there must be an empty path below the egg, the torch should be two blocks below it as described, and the solid block directly supporting the egg must be the block you remove.
Removing the wrong block
Symptom: The egg stays in place, or the work area opens somewhere other than beneath it.
Fix: Trace the vertical line from the egg to the block immediately touching its base. Restore unsafe gaps, then remove that supporting block after the torch is positioned.
Using a piston without checking its face
Symptom: The piston activates but the egg does not move.
Fix: Reorient the piston so its pushing face points at the egg, reconnect the lever or power source, and activate it only after the portal is covered.

Quick collection checklist
- Dragon defeated and egg visible.
- Exit portal opening covered.
- Egg moved away from the portal only if necessary.
- Supporting block identified.
- Empty space prepared below the egg.
- Torch, bottom slab, button, pressure plate, or piston ready.
- Support removed or piston powered from the correct direction.
- Item picked up and stored safely.
The Bottom Line
Defeat the Ender Dragon, cover the exit portal, and make the egg fall onto a torch or other non-full block by removing its support. A powered piston is a safe alternative. Never mine the egg directly or work over an uncovered portal.
