If Documents disappeared from File Explorer, first check whether only its navigation shortcut is missing. If the folder opens to the wrong place, or files vanished after OneDrive backup stopped, use a different fix: pinning restores an entry, while OneDrive and folder-location steps address where files are stored.
First identify what disappeared
Before changing a folder location or moving files, check which of these cases fits:
| What you see | What to check | First action | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documents is missing from Home or the left pane, but you can still open its files elsewhere. | Your Windows version and the known-folder view. | Pin Documents to Quick access. | Restores the navigation entry; it does not recover files or change the folder’s location. Microsoft’s File Explorer guidance describes this behavior for Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. |
| Documents opens the wrong folder, or expected files are missing from the familiar location. | OneDrive folder backup, the account you are viewing, and the folder’s Properties > Location tab. | Use Location > Move to select the folder that contains the files you want. | Changes the folder location. Check the destination and any move prompt before proceeding. Microsoft’s location-repair example is for Desktop and says to repeat the process for Documents if needed. |
| The problem began after you stopped OneDrive folder backup. | The OneDrive folder and any “Where are my files” shortcut. | Move the intended files from OneDrive into the device’s Documents folder; make cloud-only files available locally first. | Returns selected files to the local folder. The stopped backup no longer covers files added there. See Microsoft’s OneDrive folder-backup guidance. |
| Files were deleted, overwritten, or corrupted in OneDrive. | The account, Restore your OneDrive eligibility, recycle bin, and version history. | Choose the relevant OneDrive recovery route. | May recover eligible cloud content, but recovery is not guaranteed. See Microsoft’s OneDrive restore guidance. |
A folder shortcut, a folder location, and the files themselves are separate things. A missing entry alone does not show that files have been deleted.
Restore a missing Documents entry in File Explorer
For Windows 11 version 22H2 and later, Microsoft says known folders such as Documents are pinned in Home and the navigation pane by default, rather than displayed under This PC. To restore a missing entry:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Open File Explorer and select Home in the left pane.
- Select the Up arrow beside the address bar. The known folders—Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos—appear.
- Right-click (or press and hold) Documents, then select Pin to Quick access.
- Check that Documents now appears in Home and the navigation pane.
These steps restore the navigation entry only. If Documents itself is missing, or the folder opens to an unexpected location, continue with the relevant checks below rather than treating pinning as a file-recovery step.
Check a Documents folder that opens in the wrong place
OneDrive folder backup or a changed known-folder location can make the familiar Documents entry point somewhere unexpected. First check that you are looking at the intended Windows account and Documents folder; similarly named folders may exist under the PC and OneDrive.

Microsoft’s repair instructions use a Desktop example, but say to repeat the procedure for Documents when necessary. They do not diagnose the cause on a particular computer. Before moving anything, confirm the destination is the folder containing the files you want. If you are making a change and want a separate safety copy, Windows supports copying files to external storage such as a USB drive; it is optional, not required to pin the folder or recover OneDrive files (Microsoft’s external-storage transfer guidance).
- In File Explorer, expand the OneDrive folders and right-click the affected known folder.
- Select Properties, then open the Location tab.
- Select Move, choose the folder containing the files you want, and select Select Folder.
- Select Apply. If Windows asks whether to move files from the old location to the new one, select Yes only after confirming the target and the files involved.
If Documents has no Location tab, treat that as a reason to check whether you opened a different Documents folder or account—not as proof of one specific cause. Microsoft notes that the tab may be absent when the wrong Desktop folder is open, including one outside OneDrive or associated with a work or school account; that example is a clue to investigate, not a guarantee about Documents.

Return files to the PC after stopping OneDrive backup
Stopping folder backup does not automatically move already-backed-up files back to the device’s Documents folder. Microsoft states: “When you stop backing up a folder, the files that were already backed up by OneDrive stay in the OneDrive folder, and will no longer appear in your device folder.” The OneDrive instructions also say that, when stopping backup, users can choose to keep files only in OneDrive (removing them from the computer) or only on the PC (removing them from OneDrive).
- Open the stopped folder and look for the Where are my files shortcut, which opens its OneDrive location.
- Check that you are viewing the intended OneDrive account and identify which copy you want to keep before moving files.
- If a needed file is cloud-only, right-click it and select Always keep on this device so it downloads locally.
- Select the files you want in the OneDrive folder and drag them into the device’s Documents folder.
Files added to the device’s Documents folder after backup is stopped are not covered by that stopped backup setting. Check the copy and sync status before moving files, especially if both the PC and OneDrive contain folders named Documents.

Try OneDrive recovery if content was deleted or overwritten
If the files were stored in OneDrive and are now deleted, overwritten, or corrupted, use the recovery option that matches the problem. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Restore your OneDrive to undo file and folder actions from the past 30 days. That window applies to this feature; it is not a promise that every file is recoverable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Restore your OneDrive: For an eligible Microsoft 365 subscriber, use it to undo a broader set of recent file and folder actions. Files created after the selected restore point are sent to the recycle bin.
- OneDrive recycle bin: Look for deleted files there if you do not want to restore the whole OneDrive. Microsoft says items permanently deleted from this recycle bin cannot be recovered.
- Version history: Check earlier versions if a file was overwritten or corrupted. Work or school administrators may affect whether version history is available.
What can be recovered depends on where the content was stored, how it was deleted, the account and subscription, retention settings, and how much time has passed. If none of these routes shows the file, the available information may not be enough to establish whether it can be recovered.
