The best spatial-audio result from true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds comes from matching three things: a genuinely spatial or Dolby Atmos title, a playback path that supports it, and the mode you prefer—fixed or head-tracked. Ordinary stereo does not become a creator-authored Atmos mix merely because a spatial switch is enabled. Head tracking is a separate capability that requires compatible earbuds, phone software and app support.
Start by confirming the title carries a spatial or Atmos badge, enable the format in your music or video app, verify your exact phone-and-earbud combination, then compare spatial audio off, fixed spatial audio and head tracking with the same scene or track. The steps below cover iPhone, Android and Pixel setups, compatibility limits, troubleshooting and buying decisions.
What spatial audio can—and cannot—do
Spatial audio is an umbrella term for playback that places sounds around you instead of presenting every channel as a simple left-right stereo image. Dolby Atmos music and multichannel film soundtracks contain positional information created in the mix. A phone or app can render that information over headphones, including TWS earbuds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat is different from a software effect applied to an ordinary stereo recording. If a track was not mixed for Dolby Atmos or another supported spatial format, turning on a spatializer does not recreate the missing, creator-authored mix. In Apple Music, available Atmos tracks carry an Atmos icon, and the icon also appears on the Now Playing screen while an Atmos version is playing. Availability can vary by country or region; Apple documents the behavior in its iPhone Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos guide.

There is a second distinction: static (fixed) spatial audio keeps the virtual soundstage in a stable presentation, while dynamic (head-tracked) spatial audio changes the apparent sound position as your head moves. Android’s implementation documentation explicitly says static spatial audio does not require special headset functionality, whereas dynamic playback does require a headset with head-tracking support. Read the Android spatial-audio implementation documentation for the platform requirements.
The compatibility chain you must verify
Spatial audio is not a single earbud specification. The phone, operating-system version, connected earbuds, playback app, user settings, title and sometimes subscription tier all participate. Android’s spatializer APIs check the current device, connected headset and user settings before an app can offer a particular mode.
| Part of the chain | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and OS | Exact model and current system support | The operating system decides which spatializer and head-tracking APIs are available. |
| Earbuds | Exact TWS model, firmware and head-tracking capability | Static rendering may work with ordinary headphones; dynamic rendering needs compatible motion sensing and data handling. |
| Playback app | Spatial or Dolby Atmos support and the correct setting | An app must deliver the multichannel or object-based stream instead of a stereo fallback. |
| Title | Atmos/spatial badge on the particular song, film or episode | A catalog may contain both spatial and stereo versions. |
| Account and region | Subscription tier and local catalog availability | Some services and titles are restricted by plan or country. |
| User controls | Spatial audio enabled; fixed or head-tracked mode selected | A supported device can still play stereo if the relevant control is off. |
Do not infer compatibility from a product name alone. Verify the phone and earbud combination in the manufacturer’s current support instructions, then confirm that the app exposes the mode for the title you are playing.

Apple’s documented iPhone path is designed around the Music app and compatible headphones such as supported AirPods models. Follow these steps in order.
- Open the format setting: go to Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos.
- Choose a playback policy: select Automatic to use Dolby Atmos when connected to headphones Apple identifies as compatible (for example, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro or AirPods Max) or to a compatible Atmos speaker/receiver. Select Always On if you want Music to attempt Atmos playback with any connected headphones.
- Keep downloaded music in the format: turn on Download in Dolby Atmos if you want offline downloads in Atmos where that version exists.
- Pick a known Atmos title: browse for the Atmos badge rather than assuming every song supports the format.
- Verify playback: start the song and check for the Atmos icon on the Now Playing screen.
Always On is an attempt, not a catalog guarantee. It tells Music to try Atmos on the connected headphones; it cannot create an Atmos mix for a song that has only a stereo version. Apple also notes that service and Atmos availability differ by country or region. See Apple’s full instructions at Play music in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos on iPhone.
Choose fixed or head-tracked playback on supported AirPods
- Wear the earbuds and open Control Center.
- Press and hold the volume control.
- Tap Spatial Audio.
- Select Fixed or Head Tracked.
Fixed provides Spatial Audio without following head movement. Head Tracked follows movement so the virtual presentation appears anchored relative to your head and the soundstage. The selected mode is saved and used the next time in that app, according to Apple’s support guide.

Set up spatial audio on Android
Android does not present one universal experience across every phone and earbud. The device’s spatializer implementation, the connected headset and the app determine whether static or dynamic playback appears. Android’s API is intended to let apps discover whether the current combination supports immersive multichannel playback.
- Update the phone and earbuds: install available operating-system and earbud-firmware updates, then reconnect the earbuds.
- Check the Bluetooth device page: open the connected earbuds’ settings and look for Spatial audio, Head tracking or similarly named controls. Labels differ by manufacturer.
- Enable the mode: turn on spatial audio for static playback. If offered, enable head tracking separately for dynamic playback.
- Open a supported app and title: select a film, episode or track that is explicitly labeled spatial or Atmos.
- Confirm the signal: use the app’s playback information or badge to make sure it has not fallen back to stereo.
If the phone reports that spatial audio is unavailable, changing a toggle cannot override the compatibility check. Try the same earbuds with a supported phone, or use fixed spatial audio if the hardware lacks head tracking. Android’s technical requirements and terminology are described in the Android Open Source Project implementation guide.
Pixel and Pixel Buds: the documented head-tracking path
Google documents Spatial Audio with head tracking for Pixel Buds Pro and Pixel Buds Pro 2 paired with a Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro or newer Pixel phone. In Google’s setup, head tracking is off by default.
- Pair the earbuds with the compatible Pixel phone.
- Open Settings > Connected devices.
- Tap the paired Pixel Buds, then open Sound.
- Turn on Spatial Audio.
- Turn on Head tracking if you want dynamic playback.
On other Android phones, the Pixel Buds app exposes corresponding Sound controls, but the complete feature still depends on the phone-and-earbud combination. Google’s guide also says spatial audio works particularly well with movies and television and gives HBO Max and Netflix Premium as examples to try, subject to the relevant subscription and current catalog. These examples are not a universal list of supported services. See Google’s Pixel Buds Spatial Audio and head-tracking instructions.
Use content that actually contains spatial information
Music
Search the service for its Dolby Atmos or spatial-audio indicator. In Apple Music, the Atmos icon is shown in the catalog and during playback. The availability of an Atmos version, and sometimes the service itself, can depend on your country or region.
Dolby’s consumer FAQ lists Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited and TIDAL HiFi among services offering Dolby Atmos music, but catalogs and plans change. Confirm the current label in your app and region before relying on any service list. The reference is Dolby’s guide to experiencing music in Dolby Atmos.

Movies and television
Video is often the easiest way to hear a stable spatial scene because the soundtrack is mixed for a defined surround or object-based layout. Google’s Pixel Buds guide names HBO Max and Netflix Premium as examples where users can try Spatial Audio, with availability dependent on subscription and the particular title. Look for an Atmos or spatial badge on the show’s details page or playback screen.
Fixed versus head-tracked: which should you use?
| Mode | How it behaves | Often suits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off | Conventional stereo or the app’s normal headphone mix | Listeners who want the least processing or are comparing a baseline | No spatial rendering is applied. |
| Fixed spatial audio | The spatial presentation remains stable as you move | Music listeners who prefer a consistent image | It does not follow head movement. |
| Head-tracked spatial audio | The apparent sound position responds to head movement | People seeking a speaker-like anchor for films, shows or music | It requires supported headset, phone, app and settings; it is not available everywhere. |
Compare all available modes using the same Atmos track or scene. Move your head naturally, not repeatedly or forcefully, and listen for whether dialogue, vocals and surrounding effects stay where you expect. A mode that feels more convincing to one listener is not automatically higher quality for everyone. Apple provides the Fixed and Head Tracked controls, while Google specifically highlights movies and television as a strong use case.
A repeatable test for the best result
- Choose one known supported title. Do not switch songs or scenes while comparing modes.
- Set a comfortable volume. Loudness can make processing seem more impressive and makes comparisons less reliable.
- Listen with spatial audio off. Note vocal placement, ambience and dialogue clarity.
- Listen in fixed mode. Check whether the soundstage feels wider or more enveloping without becoming distracting.
- Listen in head-tracked mode. Turn your head slowly and notice whether the apparent center stays anchored as expected.
- Repeat briefly with another supported title. A single mix can reflect production choices that do not generalize.
- Keep the mode you actually prefer. Spatial processing is a listening choice, not a promise of a measurable quality improvement.
Troubleshoot when spatial audio is not working
The spatial badge never appears
- Confirm the song, episode or film has an Atmos/spatial label; a normal stereo title will not acquire one from a toggle.
- Check the app’s subscription and regional catalog restrictions.
- On iPhone, verify Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and look for the Atmos icon in Now Playing.
- On Android, check the connected-device settings and confirm the app supports the phone’s spatializer.
Fixed works but head tracking is missing
- Verify that the exact earbuds model contains the required head-tracking capability.
- Confirm the phone model and operating-system support; Android treats dynamic playback as a separate capability.
- On Pixel, remember that Google’s documented setup supports Pixel Buds Pro or Pro 2 with Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro or newer, and that head tracking starts off.
- Reconnect the earbuds after enabling the setting and check the Bluetooth device page again.
The sound is still stereo after enabling Always On
On iPhone, Always On asks Music to attempt Atmos with connected headphones; it does not manufacture an Atmos version for every song. Return to the catalog, select a title carrying the Atmos icon, and verify the icon during playback.
Head tracking feels inconsistent
- Ensure both earbuds are connected and seated securely.
- Keep the phone and earbuds within a normal Bluetooth range and avoid switching playback devices during the test.
- Check for firmware and operating-system updates.
- Compare with fixed mode. If fixed works reliably but dynamic mode does not, the issue is likely in the head-tracking compatibility path rather than the title itself.
Do you need special TWS earbuds?
You do not necessarily need special earbuds for static spatial playback. Android’s documentation states: “Static spatial audio doesn’t require head tracking, so specific functionality isn’t required in the headset.” Any actual support still depends on the phone, app and format path.
You do need a compatible headset for dynamic head tracking. For iPhone, use the AirPods models and controls Apple identifies as supported. For Google’s documented Pixel setup, use Pixel Buds Pro or Pixel Buds Pro 2 with a Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro or newer compatible Pixel phone. These are compatibility examples from official documentation, not claims that one ecosystem sounds better than another.

- BEATS’ CUSTOM ACOUSTIC PLATFORM delivers rich, immersive sound whether you’re listening to music or taking calls.
- HEAR WHAT YOU WANT with two distinct listening modes: personalized Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) and Transparency mode.
- MORE MUSIC, LESS CHARGING with up to 36 hours of listening time.
- ENHANCED COMPATIBILITY with one-touch pairing and a robust set of native Apple and Android features.
- FIND YOUR FIT with four pairs of silicone tip sizes to fit a wider range of ears. The tips create a comfortable seal for the best acoustic performance while keeping noise out.
- Atmos or multichannel playback only: prioritize phone and app support; head-tracking hardware is not essential.
- Static spatialization: verify that your phone exposes a spatializer with the earbuds connected.
- Dynamic head tracking: verify the exact phone, OS, earbud model, firmware and app combination before buying.
- Everyday comfort: evaluate fit, battery and controls separately from spatial rendering. Changing ear tips may improve comfort or seal, but the available documentation does not establish that replacement tips enable spatial audio or improve its rendering algorithm. Match tips to the exact earbud model.
What the 150 ms figure means
Android’s implementation guidance specifies a 150 ms maximum head-tracking latency. That is the maximum implementation requirement from captured head motion to the transducer detecting the resulting sound change. It is not a laboratory result for every retail earbud, nor a guarantee that all products meet the same behavior in every situation. Treat it as a platform engineering limit rather than a consumer performance score.
A practical decision checklist
- Does the exact title show an Atmos or spatial badge?
- Does your phone and operating system support the desired mode?
- Does the exact earbud model support static playback, head tracking, or both?
- Is the feature enabled in the app and in the phone’s connected-device settings?
- Does your subscription and region include the title’s spatial version?
- Have you verified the format icon while the title is actually playing?
- Have you compared off, fixed and head-tracked modes using the same content?
- Is the fit comfortable enough for a long listening session? Comfort is a separate purchase criterion, not evidence of better spatial rendering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any TWS earbuds play Dolby Atmos?
Static headphone playback can work without special head-tracking hardware, but the complete path still depends on the phone, app, title and settings. Dynamic head-tracked playback requires compatible earbuds and platform support.
Why does spatial audio work on one song but not another?
Catalogs can contain separate Atmos and stereo versions. Select a title with the service’s spatial or Atmos badge and verify the format icon during playback.
Is head-tracked audio always better than fixed audio?
No. Head tracking changes how the virtual soundstage responds to movement. Compare both modes with the same supported content and keep the one you find more natural.
Do replacement ear tips improve spatial audio?
Tips can affect comfort and seal, but the documented support information does not establish that changing tips enables spatial audio or changes the rendering algorithm. Use tips made for your exact earbud model.
