The best HDB 630 sound comes from doing three things in order: install and update Sennheiser Smart Control Plus, get the earcups and headband seated correctly, and verify the actual signal path instead of assuming that a hi-res file or USB dongle is delivering hi-res playback. Then choose the connection that fits your source, adjust the parametric equalizer and crossfeed to your taste, and use noise-control settings for the environment rather than treating them as automatic fidelity upgrades.

Start with the app, firmware and fit

Before changing codecs or equalizer bands, complete the basic setup. Sennheiser’s HDB 630 manual and FAQ identify the app, firmware, fit and signal path as the foundations of sound quality.

Install Smart Control Plus, not the older app

  1. Pair the HDB 630 with your smartphone using Bluetooth.
  2. Install Sennheiser Smart Control Plus, the app specified for the HDB 630.
  3. Open the headphones in the app and go to Settings > Firmware.
  4. Install any firmware update Sennheiser offers, keeping the headphones charged and close to the phone until the process finishes.

The HDB 630 manual says the app unlocks headphone settings and equalizer adjustment. Do not assume that the earlier Smart Control app has the same HDB 630 support. App labels can change with firmware and operating-system updates, so use the current labels shown for your device if they differ slightly.

Set the headband before judging the sound

Extend or shorten the headband until both earcups sit securely around your ears without excessive pressure. The cushions should make an even seal, and the headband should not force one cup higher than the other. A poor seal can reduce bass and make the tonal balance seem thin; an uneven position can make the stereo image feel off-center. Sennheiser specifically connects correct fit adjustment with sound quality and wearing comfort, which is why fit is the first troubleshooting step rather than an afterthought.

Sennheiser HDB 630 Wireless Audiophile Headphones with Incl. Hi-Res Dongle | Included BTD 700 for high resolution audio, parametric EQ in-app and crossfeed function.
  • Audiophile tuning: Sennheiser’s in-house 42 mm transducer and refined acoustic design deliver a neutral audiophile sound with lifelike mids, stunning detail, and a wide, natural soundstage. With minimal digital processing ensuring pure fidelity true to the original recording.
  • Wireless or wired: Enjoy high-resolution wireless sound with support for aptX HD and aptX Adaptive, especially when paired with the included BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter. For maximum purity, connect via USB-C for lossless listening up to 24-bit/96 kHz.
  • Parametric EQ: Expert-level equalization lets you define frequency bands, widths, and filters to precisely shape your sound. Tailor bass, enhance vocals, or fine-tune for any genre, just like a mastering engineer.
  • Adaptive ANC & Transparency Mode: Powerful noise cancellation blocks distractions without degrading clarity, dynamics, or balance. Transparency Mode instantly lets in surrounding sounds when you need to stay aware.
  • Listen for days, not hours: A class-leading 60-hour battery keeps you going through long trips or work weeks. Just 10 minutes of fast charging adds up to 7 hours of playtime, ideal for when you’re on the move.
  • Move the cups in small increments and check that both ears are fully inside the cushions.
  • Remove glasses, hats or hair caught under a cushion when evaluating bass response.
  • After repositioning, listen to the same short passage again before changing EQ.

Choose the connection that matches your source

There is no single universally best mode. Direct Bluetooth is the simplest option, the included BTD 700 is the route Sennheiser specifies for hi-res wireless from a compatible USB-C source, USB-C provides a wired digital connection, and the 3.5 mm cable serves compatible analog equipment. The source device, app output and selected mode determine what the headphones actually receive.

Signal path Use it when Checks before listening Limit or trade-off
Bluetooth from your phone, tablet or computer You want uncomplicated wireless listening Confirm the HDB 630 is the selected output and check the device’s available codec The codec depends on the source device and software; a hi-res file does not guarantee hi-res Bluetooth playback
Included BTD 700 Bluetooth USB-C dongle You have a compatible USB-C source and want Sennheiser’s hi-res wireless route Pair the dongle with the headphones, select BTD 700 as the system output, enable High Resolution, then inspect Signal Path Sennheiser quotes up to 45 hours in aptX Adaptive 24-bit/96-kHz mode, compared with up to 60 hours at standard resolution
USB-C audio You want a wired digital connection from a compatible phone or computer Set the computer’s sample rate manually when required and select the HDB 630 as output The headphones support up to 24-bit/96-kHz, but the source and operating-system setting still determine the delivered signal
3.5 mm analog cable Your source has a compatible analog headphone output Connect the included cable and switch the HDB 630 on Because the headphones use internal DSP, Sennheiser says they operate only while switched on, even with analog input

Sennheiser lists Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC support. Which codec is selected is controlled by the source and its software; the headphone specification alone cannot force a particular codec.

Set up hi-res wireless with the BTD 700

The BTD 700 is included with the HDB 630. It is not necessary for ordinary Bluetooth listening, but it is the accessory Sennheiser documents for its hi-res wireless path from a compatible USB-C source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pair and route the dongle

  1. Plug the BTD 700 into the source’s USB-C port.
  2. Turn on the HDB 630 and pair it with the dongle according to the on-screen or audible prompts.
  3. Open the phone or computer’s sound controls and select BTD 700 as the output if the operating system continues sending audio to its built-in speakers or another device.
  4. Start playback from the app you actually use, not just from a system test tone.

On an older iPhone with a Lightning port, Sennheiser says the BTD 700 works with iOS devices that have USB-C. A Lightning-port iPhone requires a compatible USB-C-to-Lightning adapter that supports audio; Sennheiser recommends an MFi-certified adapter. Compatibility is conditional on the adapter and phone, so an adapter that supplies power only is not sufficient.

Enable High Resolution deliberately

  1. In Smart Control Plus, open Settings > Audio Mode Priority.
  2. Select High Resolution.
  3. Power-cycle the headphones when the manual instructs you to do so.
  4. Resume playback and check the signal information before evaluating the result.

High Resolution is not enabled by default for the BTD 700 route because standard mode preserves more battery life. Switching the preference therefore involves a runtime trade-off, not a hidden quality defect in standard mode.

Confirm what is really arriving

In Smart Control Plus, open Settings > Signal Path. Read the displayed codec and sampling rate. This is the useful confirmation; a file label, streaming-service badge or the presence of a dongle is not proof by itself.

  • The source’s own sampling rate limits playback. Bluetooth does not up-sample a lower-rate source into a higher-rate recording.
  • If Signal Path shows a lower rate than expected, check the player’s output settings, operating-system mixer and dongle selection before changing EQ.
  • Different phones, computers and playback apps can expose different controls, and Sennheiser notes that sound quality and volume leveling can depend on both the app and device.

Use USB-C when you want a wired digital path

Compatible USB-C devices support plug-and-play audio with the HDB 630. Connect the included 1.20 m USB-C-to-USB-C cable, select the headphones in the device’s output menu and play a known track.

Check the computer sample rate

The HDB 630 supports up to 24-bit/96-kHz over USB-C, but Windows and Mac may need a manual sample-rate selection. If the operating system is set to a lower rate, the headphones receive that lower rate even when the music file is 96 kHz.

  1. Open the operating system’s sound or audio-MIDI control panel.
  2. Select the HDB 630 as the output device.
  3. Choose the sample rate and bit depth you intend to use, up to 24-bit/96-kHz where the device and driver expose that option.
  4. Restart the player if it keeps the previous audio device or format open.

Do not treat 24-bit/96-kHz capability as a promise that every application, browser tab or streaming service will use it. The application’s output settings and the source material remain decisive.

Use the 3.5 mm input correctly

The included 1.20 m 3.5 mm audio cable connects the HDB 630 to a compatible analog source. The headphones still need to be switched on. Sennheiser attributes this requirement to the HDB 630’s internal digital signal processing, so an apparently silent analog connection is often a power-state issue rather than a defective cable.

Fine-tune the sound after the signal is stable

Equalization and crossfeed are finishing tools. Apply them only after the fit, output routing and signal path are correct; otherwise you may use EQ to compensate for a connection problem.

Parametric equalizer

Smart Control Plus provides a parametric equalizer, and Sennheiser says EQ settings are stored on the headphones and remain active without the app. That lets you tune with the phone and then use the same profile from another source.

  1. Open the equalizer in Smart Control Plus.
  2. Make one small change at a time and listen to a familiar passage.
  3. For more weight, make a modest low-frequency adjustment rather than immediately applying a large bass boost.
  4. For clearer speech or vocals, try a restrained presence adjustment; if consonants become sharp, reduce it.
  5. For more brilliance, make a small treble change and check cymbals and sibilants at a safe level.
  6. Save the profile only after comparing it with EQ bypassed.

There is no objectively best curve for every listener, recording or ear shape. Keep a neutral or bypassed reference so that preference changes do not become mistaken for a connection improvement.

Crossfeed for hard-panned recordings

Crossfeed blends a small amount of each channel into the other to reduce the extreme left-right separation found on some older stereo mixes. Smart Control Plus offers Off, Low and High.

  • Use Off for the unaltered channel separation and for recordings already mixed naturally.
  • Try Low when vocals or instruments sit unnaturally at one extreme.
  • Reserve High for tracks where the hard panning is distracting and the softer stereo image is preferable.

Crossfeed is a listening choice, not a universal fidelity setting. Compare the same passage with each option and keep the setting that makes the recording more comfortable without obscuring detail.

  • Want everything, just no compromise? High-definition, neutral sound, ultra-long life battery, active noise reduction that works perfectly - and all of this, of course, wireless? Then you'll love the closed HDB 630. With the included BTD 700 Bluetooth USB C adapter, you can enjoy high-quality audioblanket sound wherever you are.

Set ANC and transparency for the environment

Smart Control Plus offers manual, adaptive and off active-noise-cancellation settings, along with transparency control. Choose among them based on where you are listening:

  • Adaptive ANC: useful when external noise changes, such as on public transport.
  • Manual ANC: useful when you want a fixed level rather than automatic changes.
  • ANC off: appropriate in a quiet room or when you prefer no active processing.
  • Transparency: lets outside sound through when you need awareness of people or announcements.

These controls change the listening environment and can alter your perception of bass or detail. Do not assume that one ANC mode improves fidelity in every setting; compare modes at the same moderate volume in the environment where you will use them.

Understand the HDB 630’s resolution and battery trade-offs

Sennheiser lists up to 24-bit/96-kHz capability through USB-C, analog input or the BTD 700 path. The company also quotes the following maximum runtimes:

Mode Manufacturer-stated maximum Qualification
Standard resolution Up to 60 hours Sennheiser maximum; actual runtime varies with volume, settings and use
aptX Adaptive, 24-bit/96-kHz via BTD 700 Up to 45 hours Sennheiser maximum; not an independent test result

The shorter figure in hi-res wireless mode is the practical cost of selecting that mode. If a long trip matters more than the highest available Bluetooth setting, standard resolution may be the better choice. Neither figure should be read as a guaranteed runtime for every device, volume level or firmware version.

The HDB 630 weighs 311 g without its cable. Its Bluetooth 5.2 radio supports aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC. These are product specifications, not independent measurements of perceived sound quality.

Troubleshoot the most common sound problems

Sound is thin or bass is missing

  • Reseat the headband and check that both cushions seal around the ears.
  • Remove anything trapped under the cushions, including glasses arms or hair.
  • Compare the same track with EQ bypassed before adding bass.
  • If using analog, confirm the headphones are switched on.

The wrong device is playing audio

  1. Open the phone, computer or casting app’s output picker.
  2. Select HDB 630 for direct Bluetooth, or BTD 700 when using the dongle.
  3. Pause and resume playback after changing the output.
  4. Check Signal Path in Smart Control Plus to confirm that the selected route is active.

Hi-res mode does not appear to be active

  • Verify that the BTD 700 is connected to a compatible USB-C source.
  • Confirm High Resolution under Settings > Audio Mode Priority.
  • Power-cycle the headphones as directed by the manual.
  • Inspect Settings > Signal Path for codec and sampling rate.
  • Check the source file and player output; a lower-rate source cannot be turned into a higher-rate signal by Bluetooth.

USB audio is stuck at a lower rate

On Windows or Mac, open the system audio controls and select the HDB 630’s available sample rate manually. Then restart the player. If the higher rate is not offered, the limitation may be the device, driver or application rather than the headphones.

Battery life is shorter than expected

Compare your use with Sennheiser’s two quoted maxima. Hi-res aptX Adaptive through BTD 700 is rated up to 45 hours, while standard resolution is rated up to 60 hours. Higher volume and active processing can also reduce runtime, so a result below the headline maximum is not automatically a fault.

Protect your hearing while evaluating sound

Sennheiser’s manual warns: “Listening at high volume levels can lead to permanent hearing defects.” Set the volume low before putting on the headphones, raise it gradually only as needed, and avoid remaining continuously exposed to high levels. There is no single numeric safe level supplied for this model, so use the lowest volume that lets you follow the music clearly and take listening breaks.

A repeatable HDB 630 setup checklist

  1. Install Smart Control Plus and apply available firmware updates.
  2. Adjust the headband and verify a comfortable, even seal.
  3. Choose direct Bluetooth, BTD 700, USB-C or 3.5 mm according to your source and priorities.
  4. If using BTD 700, select it as output, enable High Resolution when desired and power-cycle the headphones.
  5. If using USB-C on Windows or Mac, check the system sample rate manually.
  6. If using analog, switch the HDB 630 on before playback.
  7. Open Signal Path and verify the codec and sampling rate actually reaching the headphones.
  8. Apply modest parametric-EQ changes only after the connection is confirmed.
  9. Try crossfeed Off, Low or High according to the recording, especially with hard-panned mixes.
  10. Select ANC or transparency for the environment, then keep the volume at a safe level.

Following that order prevents the most common mistake: trying to solve a fit or routing problem with an equalizer. Once the HDB 630 is seated correctly and Signal Path confirms the intended connection, the remaining choices—standard or hi-res wireless, wired or wireless, EQ, crossfeed and noise control—are legitimate preferences with clearly defined trade-offs.
