The best settings depend on the exact Skullcandy model you own. Find the model name on the headband, earcup, packaging, or manual first, then use that model’s controls: Hesh ANC uses a button sequence and does not work with the Skullcandy app, while Crusher ANC 2 and Icon ANC provide app-based ANC and sound adjustments. Start with ANC enabled, choose the Music preset, and change only one control at a time while listening to a familiar track or spoken clip.
Identify the exact headphones before changing anything
Skullcandy uses different buttons, app features, ANC controls, and EQ options across its headphones. A sequence that works on Hesh ANC should not be assumed to work on Crusher ANC 2, Icon ANC, Rail ANC, or another model. Confirm the complete product name before following instructions.
Where to look for the model name
- Check the printed label inside or beneath the headband and on the earcup.
- Look at the original box, quick-start card, or owner’s guide.
- Check the Bluetooth device name after pairing, but use the physical label or official guide as the final confirmation.
- Use the model-specific pages for Hesh ANC, Crusher ANC 2, Icon ANC, and Rail ANC.

Active noise cancellation and awareness modes solve different problems. ANC attempts to reduce outside sound. Ambient or Stay-Aware mode intentionally feeds surrounding sound into the headphones so you can hear people, announcements, or traffic. Turning on awareness is therefore not an alternative way to increase cancellation.

Hesh ANC: use the top-button cycle
Hesh ANC powers on with ANC enabled by default, according to Skullcandy. Double-press the top button to cycle through the three available states:
- ANC on: use this for the quietest listening environment available on the headset.
- Ambient Mode: use this when you need to hear your surroundings; it amplifies external sound rather than blocking it.
- ANC off: use this when you want neither active cancellation nor ambient amplification.
Hesh ANC will not pair with the Skullcandy App, so do not look for an app slider or app EQ for this model. The official statement is on Skullcandy’s Hesh ANC help page.
Crusher ANC 2: switch modes on the headphones or in the app
Crusher ANC 2 includes an onboard ANC switch that toggles between ANC and Stay-Aware mode. Its first-power-on voice prompt indicates that ANC is on. Connect the headphones to your phone, open the Skullcandy App, and adjust the ANC or Stay-Aware intensity when you need more or less processing rather than a simple on/off choice.

For a quiet room, begin with ANC enabled and a moderate app intensity. Increase intensity only if the remaining background sound is distracting. If voices or announcements become difficult to hear, switch to Stay-Aware instead of raising volume while ANC is active.
Icon ANC: set the level once, then check that it persists
Icon ANC also activates ANC by default when powered on. In the Skullcandy App, use the ANC/Stay-Aware slider to choose the level you want. Skullcandy says the selected level remains through power cycles, so you should not need to reset it every time you turn the headphones on.
Other models, including Rail ANC
Do not apply one of these button sequences to another Skullcandy product. For Rail ANC or a different model, open its specific help page or the Skullcandy Help Center and follow the listed controls. If the guide does not state that ANC intensity is adjustable, treat the feature as unconfirmed rather than guessing an app setting.

Model-specific quick setup checklist
Hesh ANC
Power on and expect ANC to start enabled. Double-press the top button until the desired state is announced or indicated: ANC, Ambient Mode, or ANC off. Since Hesh ANC does not pair with the Skullcandy App, all documented mode changes happen from the headset. Use the physical controls and the Hesh ANC guide for any additional operation rather than trying to register it as an app product.

Pair with the phone or tablet first, then open the Skullcandy App and connect the product there. Use the physical ANC switch for a quick ANC/Stay-Aware change, or the app for intensity, personalized sound, EQ modes, and firmware. Start with Crusher intensity low when evaluating tonal balance; the wheel can make a preset seem bassier even when the EQ has not changed.
Icon ANC
Powering on activates ANC by default. Open the app and set the ANC/Stay-Aware slider to the level that suits the environment. Because the selected level is documented as persistent through power cycles, check it once after setup and then concentrate on the listening task and EQ.
Rail ANC
Rail ANC documents Music, Bass Boost, Podcast, and a custom five-band EQ. Use the current Rail ANC help page to confirm app and ANC-mode instructions before pressing buttons or assuming that Crusher or Icon behavior applies. The five bands are low, mid-low, mid, mid-high, and high.
Set sound for what you are listening to
Use a preset as a starting point, then make small changes only if the content calls for them. A preset is not an objective quality score: it changes the tonal balance to emphasize a particular listening task.

Start with Music, then compare one relevant preset
- Play a familiar song, film scene, or spoken recording at a comfortable volume.
- Select Music first for general listening. On Crusher ANC 2, Skullcandy identifies Music as the default general-listening mode.
- For speech-heavy material, compare Podcast. Its reduced bass can make voices easier to distinguish, but it may make music sound thin.
- On Crusher ANC 2, try Movie for a film scene where dialogue and detail are being masked by effects or music.
- Use Bass Boost only when you actually want more low-frequency weight; extra bass can obscure vocals and other details.
- Switch back and forth at the same volume. Keep the mode that makes the material easiest to follow, not the one that sounds most dramatic for a few seconds.
Crusher ANC 2: separate Crusher sensation from EQ
Crusher ANC 2 has a physical Crusher intensity wheel in addition to its EQ modes. Skullcandy’s instructions say, “For more/less Crusher bass: scroll the Crusher intensity wheel up/down.” Pressing the wheel cycles preset intensity levels. Because this control changes the bass sensation separately from EQ, turn it down or off while judging a balanced EQ; otherwise you may mistake extra sensory bass for an EQ improvement.

To change EQ modes, Skullcandy instructs users to open the Skullcandy App and select the preferred audio setting: “To switch between EQ Modes, go into the Skullcandy App and select your preferred audio setting.”
Icon ANC and Rail ANC: use the five bands for small corrections
The documented custom EQ on Icon ANC and Rail ANC has five bands: low, mid-low, mid, mid-high, and high. Make one small adjustment, replay the same section, and stop when the problem is corrected. For example, reduce the low band if bass masks speech, or adjust the high band only when the recording sounds excessively dull or sharp. Avoid moving every band at once; that makes it difficult to know which change helped.
There is no manufacturer-supplied curve that is best for every listener, ear shape, recording, or volume. Treat the five-band editor as a preference tool rather than a calibration result.
Use the app and firmware features only when your model supports them
Crusher ANC 2 setup and update path
For Crusher ANC 2, pair the headphones with the phone or tablet first, open the Skullcandy App, and connect the product inside the app. The documented app controls include ANC and Stay-Aware intensity, personalized sound, preset or custom EQ, and firmware updates.
During a Crusher ANC 2 firmware update, keep the headphones powered on and connected. Skullcandy states that the battery must be above 25 percent before the update can proceed. Do not interrupt the connection or power during the update.
Do not assume app compatibility
Hesh ANC is explicitly not app-compatible. Other products may have different support status or controls. The product setup help center provides setup videos, user guides, and troubleshooting. A registration page can show which products are listed for an app path, but if your model is absent, use its own product-help page as the stronger authority rather than forcing it into another model’s instructions.

A repeatable method for getting better results
Use this sequence whenever you change headphones, listening locations, or content types:
- Confirm the model. Write down the exact name before opening an app or pressing buttons.
- Fit the earcups correctly. Center each cushion over the ear and adjust the headband so the seal is even. Recheck the fit after putting on glasses, a hat, or other items that may move the cushions.
- Start from a known baseline. Turn ANC on where the model supports it, set the volume comfortably, choose Music, and set Crusher intensity low while evaluating balance.
- Test the actual problem. Use the train rumble, office HVAC, voices, podcast, or film dialogue that matters to you rather than a random demo clip.
- Choose awareness deliberately. If you need outside sound, select Ambient or Stay-Aware; do not interpret the increased external sound as failed ANC.
- Change one control. Compare ANC intensity, preset, Crusher level, or one EQ band separately so you can identify the useful change.
- Check at normal volume. A setting that seems impressive at a very high level may be tiring or may hide speech at ordinary listening levels.
- Save the setting only after several clips. Confirm that music, speech, and video all remain usable before treating the configuration as your everyday choice.
Keep a simple baseline
When a change sounds worse, return to Music, restore the previous ANC or awareness choice, and lower Crusher intensity before trying again. Note which preset and EQ band you changed. This makes troubleshooting reversible and prevents a series of simultaneous adjustments from leaving you unsure which setting caused the problem.
Troubleshoot without borrowing another model’s reset
Crusher ANC 2 will not pair
Skullcandy documents this reset specifically for Crusher ANC 2:
- Remove the headphones from the phone or computer’s Bluetooth list.
- Turn Bluetooth off on that device.
- Power the headphones on.
- Hold Volume Down for six seconds.
- Turn Bluetooth back on and pair the headphones again.
This is not a universal Skullcandy reset. Applying it to Hesh ANC, Icon ANC, Rail ANC, or another model may do nothing or trigger an unintended control. Use the exact model guide if the problem continues.
ANC seems weaker than expected
- Check that ANC, rather than Ambient or Stay-Aware, is selected.
- Re-seat the earcups and remove anything breaking the cushion seal.
- On Crusher ANC 2 or Icon ANC, inspect the app’s ANC intensity instead of assuming the setting is at maximum.
- Compare the result with ANC off. This confirms whether you are hearing the awareness mode or a change in the outside environment.
- Consult the model-specific troubleshooting page if the mode will not change or the headphones no longer respond.
Music sounds muddy, thin, or overly bass-heavy
- Return to Music before making further EQ changes.
- On Crusher ANC 2, reduce Crusher intensity separately from EQ.
- Use Podcast for speech as a comparison, but switch back if music loses too much low end.
- Undo the last EQ change rather than moving all five bands at once.
- Test another recording to determine whether the problem is the preset or the source mix.
The app cannot find the headphones
- Verify that the model is app-compatible; Hesh ANC is not.
- Pair the headphones in the device’s Bluetooth settings before opening the app when the model’s instructions require that order.
- Keep the headphones powered on and nearby, then retry the in-app connection.
- Use the Skullcandy Help Center for the matching setup video or manual rather than selecting a similar-looking product.
What “best” means in practice
There is no single ANC intensity, EQ curve, or preset that Skullcandy establishes as best for every listener. The official pages document controls and intended behavior, not independent cancellation percentages or laboratory sound-quality gains. Your best configuration is the one that keeps the mode you need—quiet or awareness—while making the specific music, speech, or video you actually consume clear and comfortable.

Does Hesh ANC work with the Skullcandy App?
No. Skullcandy’s Hesh ANC help page says it will not pair with the Skullcandy App. Use the headset’s physical controls and the Hesh ANC guide instead.
