The best earbud fit is comfortable, stable and sealed without painful pressure. Insert each earbud gently, adjust its position, and test tip sizes independently in your left and right ears. A loose tip can move or leak sound; an oversized tip can feel compressed. Keep the earbuds in place for ordinary movement, then use the model’s built-in seal check when one is available.

For AirPods Pro, Apple suggests judging the fit during 10 to 15 minutes of normal activity such as walking. Google gives similar positioning and sizing guidance for Pixel Buds. Manufacturer tests are useful confirmation, not a guarantee that fit alone will solve every sound, noise-cancellation or call problem.

What a good earbud fit should feel and sound like

A correctly fitted wireless earbud should stay in place when you walk and move your head, without creating a painful or pressurized feeling. The ear tip should sit securely at the canal opening rather than being forced deeply into the ear. You should be able to wear it for an ordinary listening session without repeatedly pushing it back in.

The seal is the contact between the tip and your ear canal. Apple and Google associate a good seal with better sound quality and noise cancellation; Google also includes microphone performance in its Pixel Buds guidance. These are manufacturer instructions, not a promise that changing the tip will fix every audio or call issue. A poor Bluetooth connection, blocked microphone or defective earbud can produce similar symptoms.

Signs that the seal is probably good

  • The earbud remains stable during normal movement.
  • Bass does not disappear when you gently turn your head or walk.
  • Outside noise is reduced when noise cancellation is enabled, without requiring uncomfortable pressure.
  • Your device’s fit or seal test reports a pass, when that model supports a test.

Signs that the fit needs adjustment

  • The bud feels loose, shifts when you speak or falls out.
  • Music sounds thin or changes when you touch the earbud.
  • Noise cancellation is inconsistent between ears.
  • The tip causes soreness, sharp pressure or a compressed feeling.

Judge the fit as a combination of comfort, stability and sound rather than relying on one symptom. A tight-feeling tip is not automatically a better seal, and a test result is not a reason to tolerate pain.

A step-by-step method for fitting wireless earbuds

Use the tips supplied with the earbuds first. Work on one ear at a time and make only one change between checks, so you know which adjustment helped.

  1. Choose an initial tip. Start with the size already fitted or the size that appears closest to your ear opening. Do not assume the same size will work in both ears.
  2. Insert the earbud gently. Follow the maker’s placement instructions rather than pushing straight inward with force. The tip should rest at the canal opening and the housing should sit naturally in the outer ear.
  3. Adjust the position before changing size. Rotate or settle the earbud until it feels supported. A small change in angle can improve stability without adding pressure.
  4. Check comfort and movement. Walk, turn your head and speak normally. For AirPods Pro, Apple recommends wearing them through 10 to 15 minutes of normal activity, such as walking, before deciding whether the fit is comfortable.
  5. Evaluate each ear separately. If one side is loose and the other is comfortable, change only the loose side’s tip. Left and right ears can require different sizes.
  6. Run the built-in test, if available. Use the exact test name and device requirements for your model. If the test passes but the earbud still hurts or moves, comfort and stability take priority over the automated result.

Make the checks repeatable

Insert both earbuds in the same order each time and give each side a few moments to settle before judging it. Check the fit while sitting, then repeat the check while walking and turning your head. Speaking and chewing can move the outer ear, so include those ordinary motions rather than testing only while completely still.

If you change both the tip size and the angle at once, you cannot tell which change solved the problem. Reposition first, retest, and then change only the tip on the side that still needs help. This is especially important when one ear already feels comfortable.

How to position common earbud designs

AirPods Pro

Apple’s instructions for AirPods Pro place the tip at the ear-canal opening. After insertion, rotate the stem toward your face and press gently to secure the earbud. If the fit test does not pass, Apple advises adjusting the position and testing again before trying another tip size. The supplied tips are designed for their respective AirPods Pro models, so do not assume a tip made for one generation is interchangeable with another.

Use Apple’s current instructions, including the model and operating-system requirements, at Apple’s AirPods Pro ear-tip guide. The fitting sequence matters: a tip that seems wrong when the earbud is at the wrong angle may work after the stem is rotated and the housing is settled correctly.

Google Pixel Buds

Google recommends gently rotating Pixel Buds to find a secure position. Models with stabilizers require the twist or rotation described for that specific model; the stabilizer should settle into the outer ear rather than being forced. Because Pixel Buds generations have different shapes, follow the placement diagram for your exact model instead of copying the position of another version.

Google’s multi-generation instructions are available in How to wear Google Pixel Buds. A stabilizer can help the housing stay oriented, but it does not remove the need to choose a comfortable tip size.

Choose tip size independently for each ear

Tip sizing is a balance between contact and pressure. A tip that is too small may move or fail to close the gap around the canal. A tip that is too large may feel compressed, create soreness or make you remove the earbuds sooner. There is no requirement for the left and right ears to use matching sizes.

Compare the supplied sizes one ear at a time. Keep the earbud at the recommended angle while you try each tip; otherwise, you may mistake a positioning error for a sizing problem. If the smaller tip is comfortable but slips, try the next larger size. If the larger tip seals but creates pressure, return to the smaller size and spend more time adjusting its position.

What you notice Likely fit issue Next adjustment
The earbud shifts, leaks bass or falls out Tip may be too small, or the earbud may be positioned poorly Reposition and rotate gently first; if it remains loose, try the next larger supplied tip in that ear
Persistent pressure, soreness or a blocked feeling Tip may be too large or inserted at an uncomfortable angle Reposition; if pressure continues, try the next smaller supplied tip
One ear passes a test and the other does not Different ear anatomy or different placement Adjust the failing side and test that side independently; use a different size if needed
The fit feels fine but sound remains poor Fit may not be the only cause Confirm the seal with the model’s test, then check the earbud, microphone openings, connection and audio settings

When a model’s instructions specify an order, follow it: reposition and retest before changing the tip. That prevents you from compensating for a placement problem with a larger or smaller tip.

Why matching sizes are not a requirement

Human ears are not necessarily identical in shape or canal opening. A different result on each side is therefore a fitting clue, not evidence that one earbud is defective. Mark which size is on each side if you are testing several combinations, and keep the combination that remains comfortable during movement rather than the one that looks most symmetrical.

Use the correct fit or seal test

Fit-test functions are model-specific. A test may evaluate acoustic leakage, but it cannot measure whether you will tolerate the earbud for a long listening session. Check both the earbud model and the phone or tablet operating system before looking for a menu option.

Earbud family Test name and availability What to do
AirPods Pro (1st and 2nd generation) Ear Tip Fit Test, on supported Apple devices Run the test after insertion; if it does not pass, adjust position and retest before changing size
AirPods Pro (3rd generation) Acoustic Seal Test with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later Use the current Apple instructions for the required device and software
Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a Eartip Seal Check Run the check for each ear and follow the app’s repositioning or sizing advice
Original Pixel Buds, 2020 Pixel Buds and Pixel Buds A-Series Google’s listed Eartip Seal Check does not include these models Judge stability, comfort and sound manually, using the placement instructions for that model

What a failed test does and does not tell you

A failed result means you should check placement and tip size according to the maker’s instructions. It does not identify a single guaranteed fix, and it does not mean you should force the earbud deeper. Conversely, a passing result confirms only what that test measures at that moment. Recheck comfort after walking and during a normal listening session.

Troubleshoot earbuds that keep falling out

If both earbuds feel loose

  1. Remove and reinsert them gently, following the model-specific angle or rotation.
  2. Keep the position that feels stable while walking for several minutes.
  3. If movement continues, try the next larger supplied tip in each ear.
  4. Retest the seal, if the model supports one.

Do not solve a loose fit by pushing the earbuds farther into the canal. A secure position should come from the tip and housing resting correctly in the ear, not from excessive force.

If one earbud falls out but the other is fine

Treat the ears as separate fitting tasks. Reposition the problem side, then try a different tip size on that side only. Asymmetry is normal; matching tip sizes are not required. If the stable side passes its test, leave it unchanged while you work on the other side.

If the earbuds stay in but hurt

Pressure usually calls for a smaller tip or a different angle, not a tighter insertion. Remove the earbud, allow the ear to recover, then retry with the next smaller supplied size. Stop using a configuration that causes continuing pain. A test pass cannot override persistent soreness.

If sound or noise cancellation is weak

First, reseat the earbud and run the available seal test. A poor seal can reduce bass and outside-noise reduction, but a passing test does not rule out other causes. If the issue persists, compare the two earbuds, check that openings are unobstructed and verify the device’s audio and noise-control settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If calls sound poor

Google includes microphone performance in its Pixel Buds fit guidance, so a poor seal or unstable position may affect calls on those products. Still, test in a quiet location and check the microphone openings and connection before concluding that tip size is the cause. If only one earbud produces the problem, compare its position and physical condition with the other one.

Silicone tips versus compatible memory-foam tips

For most people, the first choice is among the supplied silicone sizes. If none remains comfortable and stable, a different compatible material can be worth considering. Google’s Pixel Buds guide mentions Comply TrueGrip memory-foam tips as an option when its silicone tips do not fit well. Foam is not a universal solution: confirm that the replacement is made for the exact earbud model and that it does not interfere with the housing, charging case or stabilizer.

Check compatibility before buying rather than relying on a tip’s general appearance. Apple says AirPods Pro tips are designed for their respective models, and third-party tips need the same kind of model-specific verification. A replacement that fits the nozzle may still be unsuitable for the case or for a model’s stabilizer.

Decision factor Change supplied silicone size Consider compatible memory foam
Comfort over extended wear Try smaller or larger sizes and a different position first May feel better for some ears, but comfort is individual and not guaranteed
Stability during movement Often improved by the correct size and rotation Consider only after supplied sizes fail to stay put
Evidence of a better fit Improved comfort, stability, sound or a passing seal test The same checks still apply; material alone does not prove a seal
Compatibility Supplied tips are intended for the earbud model Must be verified for the exact model and charging case

The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish one material as universally superior. Choose the option that gives your ears a comfortable, stable seal and remains compatible with the earbuds and case. Do not treat a replacement tip as a guaranteed cure for a poor fit.

Common fitting mistakes to avoid

  • Using one size automatically. Test both ears independently; different sizes can be the correct result.
  • Changing size before fixing the angle. Follow the model’s rotation or stabilizer instructions and retest before swapping tips.
  • Judging only while seated. Walk, turn your head and speak normally, because movement can reveal a loose fit.
  • Forcing a tight seal. More pressure is not a substitute for correct placement and can create soreness.
  • Assuming every model has a test. Check the exact product and device requirements; Google does not list Eartip Seal Check for every Pixel Buds generation.
  • Buying a generic replacement without checking. Confirm the earbud model, charging case and stabilizer compatibility first.
  • Blaming fit for every audio fault. A passing seal can coexist with connection, microphone, hardware or settings problems.

A quick fitting checklist

  • Start with the supplied tips and insert each earbud gently.
  • Rotate or adjust placement before changing size when the manufacturer recommends that order.
  • Wear the earbuds during ordinary movement; for AirPods Pro, use Apple’s 10-to-15-minute activity check.
  • Test the left and right ears independently.
  • Use Ear Tip Fit Test, Acoustic Seal Test or Eartip Seal Check only when your exact model and device support it.
  • Prefer comfort and stability over a test result that requires painful pressure.
  • Consider a compatible memory-foam option only after the supplied silicone sizes fail, and verify model compatibility before buying.

When to stop changing tips

If every supplied size causes pain, the earbud repeatedly falls out despite correct positioning, or sound remains unreliable after a confirmed seal, the limitation may be the earbud’s shape or another device problem rather than your technique. Do not keep increasing pressure or forcing the earbud deeper. Use the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model to check fit limitations and other causes.

At that point, document which sizes and positions you tried, whether each ear passed its available test, and what happens during movement. That information makes model-specific support more useful and prevents repeating the same adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get wireless earbuds to fit better?

Insert each earbud gently, follow its model-specific rotation or stabilizer instructions, and adjust the position before changing tip size. Then test the supplied sizes independently in each ear while walking and speaking normally.

How do I know if my earbuds have a good seal?

A good seal normally feels secure without painful pressure, preserves bass during movement and improves noise reduction when enabled. Use the model’s Ear Tip Fit Test, Acoustic Seal Test or Eartip Seal Check when available, then confirm comfort during ordinary wear.

Why do my earbuds keep falling out?

The tip may be too small, or the earbud may be positioned incorrectly. Reinsert and rotate it gently first; if it still moves, try the next larger supplied tip in that ear. Do not push the earbud deeper with force.

Do both ears need the same ear-tip size?

No. Apple and Google both note that ears can differ. Choose the size that is comfortable and stable for each ear independently.

Should I change the tip size or reposition the earbud first?

Reposition and retest first when the manufacturer’s instructions call for that order. A poor angle can make a correctly sized tip seem loose or uncomfortable.

Which earbuds support a seal test?

Apple lists Ear Tip Fit Test for AirPods Pro 1 and 2, and Acoustic Seal Test for AirPods Pro 3 with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. Google lists Eartip Seal Check for Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a. Check current instructions for your exact model and device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can memory-foam tips fix a poor fit?

They may be worth trying if the supplied silicone tips do not fit well. Google mentions Comply TrueGrip for supported Pixel Buds, but compatibility is model-specific and foam is not guaranteed to solve every fit problem.

What if the fit test passes but the earbuds hurt?

Prioritize comfort. Remove the earbuds, try a different position or smaller supplied tip, and stop using any configuration that causes continuing pain. A test result does not require you to tolerate discomfort.

The Bottom Line

Get the best wireless-earbud fit by inserting gently, positioning correctly and testing each ear separately. Reposition before changing size, use the exact model’s seal test when available, and judge the result during normal movement for 10 to 15 minutes. A comfortable, stable seal matters more than a forced fit or a test result that causes pain. Consider memory-foam tips only after the supplied silicone options fail and only after verifying exact model compatibility.
