To improve 5G on a UAE phone, start with the exact places where you need service—your home, workplace and regular route. Check those addresses on the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) coverage map and on the coverage maps for e& and du. Then verify that your precise phone model, SIM or eSIM, carrier account and plan all support 5G, select an appropriate 5G network mode, refresh the connection and retest. If the same locations remain weak, give the operator location and time details and compare the other network at those locations.
A 5G symbol or shaded map area is not a promise of a particular speed. Indoor construction, distance from the serving cell, device compatibility, network load and latency can all affect the result. The sequence below helps you identify which of those variables is responsible without relying on unsupported “signal booster” claims.
What determines 5G performance in the UAE?
A working 5G connection requires four conditions at the same time:
- Coverage: A usable 5G signal must reach the place where the phone is being used. Outdoor availability does not guarantee reception in a particular room.
- Compatible hardware: The exact handset model and regional variant must support the UAE operator’s 5G service. Two phones sold under a similar name can have different modem or band support.
- Provisioned service: The active SIM or eSIM line, account and tariff must allow 5G. A 5G-capable phone does not automatically receive 5G service.
- Radio and network conditions: Distance, building materials, interference, cell capacity and the current number of users affect throughput and latency.
These factors explain why a phone can show 5G while downloads are slow, or why service changes when you move a few metres. TDRA’s quality framework treats data latency, data-transfer rate, coverage, voice-call drops, call-setup success and voice quality as separate measures. A good result on one measure does not prove that all the others are good.

Check coverage where you actually use the phone
Use the TDRA map as a screening tool
Open TDRA’s interactive service-coverage map and inspect the technology and signal-strength category at your home, office, school and regular route. Check more than one point inside a large building; a map marker near a road may not represent a basement, lift lobby or interior office.
TDRA describes its maps as general information and disclaims guarantees of completeness, accuracy and timeliness. Map details can change without notice. Treat a favourable colour or a 5G label as a reason to investigate, not as a guarantee that your handset will connect at a particular speed.
Check both UAE operator maps
The UAE government identifies e& and du as the licensed operators with interactive location-coverage maps. Look up the same addresses and route on each map, recording the displayed technology and signal category. A national or city-level statement cannot determine which network works best inside your building, so location-level checking is essential.

- A map shows predicted or reported service for an area, not the result for your exact room, window or moment.
- A 5G icon indicates the phone and network have reported a 5G state; it does not specify download speed, upload speed or latency.
- Apple notes that the 5G icon is based on carrier network configuration and can rarely appear when 5G coverage is unavailable.
- Congestion can reduce data rates even when the radio signal is strong.
Confirm your phone, SIM and plan before changing settings
Identify the exact handset variant
Record the model name and model number from the phone’s About screen, not just the retail name. Imported or regional versions can differ in supported radio bands and operator certification. The available evidence does not establish that every version of a model works on every UAE network, so ask the selected operator to confirm compatibility for that exact variant.
Check the active data line
On a dual-SIM phone, confirm which SIM or eSIM is selected for mobile data. A 5G-capable line can appear to have no 5G when the phone is actually using another line for data. Temporarily selecting the intended line for mobile data is a useful diagnostic; do not disable a line permanently unless you understand how it affects calls and messages.

Verify account and tariff eligibility
Confirm with the operator that the account is provisioned for 5G and that the current plan includes 5G access. Ask whether an older physical SIM needs replacement or carrier-side setup. Apple states that, in some cases, a previous SIM needs carrier setup for 5G. Account provisioning is an operator issue, so changing a handset setting cannot correct it.
Set up 5G on an iPhone
Apple’s UAE guidance requires an iPhone 12 model or later, a carrier that supports 5G and a 5G cellular plan. Menu wording can vary slightly by iOS release, but the relevant path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Open Voice & Data.
- Choose the 5G mode that matches your priority.
5G Auto
5G Auto uses Apple’s Smart Data mode. The phone switches to LTE when 5G would not provide a noticeably better experience, which can conserve battery. This mode may therefore show LTE during some activities or in some locations even though 5G is available.
5G On
5G On uses 5G whenever it is available. Apple warns that it may reduce battery life. Select it when maintaining a 5G connection is more important than battery endurance, then monitor whether the connection is actually more useful in your locations.
LTE
LTE keeps the phone on LTE even when 5G is available. It is a diagnostic option: if LTE is consistently more usable in a location, record that observation for the operator rather than assuming the handset is defective.

If 5G options are missing or 5G does not work
Apple’s troubleshooting sequence is to confirm carrier and plan support, verify coverage, check whether the phone exposes 5G options, toggle Airplane Mode and contact the carrier if 5G still does not work. Use the sequence in that order so that a missing plan or unsupported model is not mistaken for a radio problem.
Set up 5G on a Google Pixel and other Android phones
Google Pixel
Google says Pixel 4a (5G) and later support 5G service. It also says the connection depends on the carrier and plan; a Pixel may connect automatically to the fastest available network or may require SIM or carrier-specific settings.
On a Pixel, inspect these controls through Settings > Network & internet > SIMs:
- Mobile data and the SIM selected for data.
- Preferred network type, where the phone exposes a 5G choice.
- Network selection, if automatic selection is not working.
- Access point names (APN), which should normally be supplied by the operator.
Other Android models
Android menu names and available choices vary by manufacturer, phone model and Android version. Look for Settings > Network & internet, Connections or a similarly named mobile-network section, then inspect preferred network type and the data SIM. Do not copy Pixel instructions blindly to another brand. Use the handset maker’s instructions and the UAE operator’s settings for the exact device.
Refresh the connection and retest methodically
- Note the starting conditions. Write down the address or room, indoor or outdoor position, phone model, active data SIM, selected network mode and approximate time.
- Toggle Airplane Mode. Turn Airplane Mode on, wait briefly for the radios to stop, then turn it off and allow the phone to register again. Apple includes this as a step after checking plan, coverage and settings.
- Repeat in the same place. Test again at the original position before moving the phone. This separates a registration problem from a location problem.
- Compare nearby positions. Try a window, another room and an outdoor point, recording whether the phone changes between 5G and LTE and whether calls behave differently.
- Repeat at comparable times. Several observations at similar times are more informative than one result during an unusual busy period. These observations are troubleshooting checks, not a controlled speed test.
Do not infer a fixed speed gain from a single run. Note practical symptoms instead: pages stall, video buffers, uploads fail, latency feels high in interactive apps, calls drop or calls take a long time to connect.

Why 5G can be slow despite a strong signal
Indoor attenuation
Concrete, coated glass, metal structures and underground rooms can weaken cellular radio. A phone may retain a 5G indicator near a window but lose useful capacity deeper inside. Moving to a window or outdoors is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that a permanent indoor fix exists.
Cell congestion
Many users sharing the same sector can reduce data-transfer rates while the signal indicator remains unchanged. Compare observations outside the busiest period if practical, and tell the operator whether the slowdown is time-specific.
Latency versus throughput
Download speed and responsiveness are different. TDRA’s criteria explicitly separate data latency from data-transfer rate. A connection can download a large file acceptably yet feel slow when opening many pages or using an interactive service because latency is high.
Device or account mismatch
An unsupported regional variant, an unprovisioned account, an old SIM or the wrong data line can leave the phone on LTE or create unreliable 5G registration. Confirm these prerequisites before blaming local coverage.

No operator is established as universally faster or better. Choose based on repeatable observations at the places and times that matter to you, not on a nationwide slogan or a single 5G icon.
| Comparison criterion | How to check it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Home, work and commute coverage | Inspect both operators’ maps at the exact addresses and route segments. | Coverage can change between buildings and along a route. |
| Indoor versus outdoor service | Observe the same phone position indoors, near a window and outdoors. | Building materials can make indoor performance different from map expectations. |
| Data transfer | Repeat comparable downloads or uploads and record the time and location. | Throughput varies with cell load and radio conditions. |
| Latency | Compare responsiveness in the same interactive tasks or latency measurements. | Low throughput is not the only cause of a slow-feeling connection. |
| Voice reliability | Note call-setup success, dropped calls and voice quality in the places you use the phone. | 5G data availability does not guarantee equivalent voice performance. |
| Compatibility and terms | Confirm the exact handset, SIM, 5G eligibility and plan conditions with each operator. | A cheaper or stronger-looking option is unsuitable if the phone cannot register reliably. |
What UAE network figures do—and do not—tell you
TDRA’s UAE Spectrum Outlook for 2026–2031 says both licensed operators continue expanding 5G coverage and that 5G services are commercially available across many urban areas. This is a broad availability statement, not proof of reception inside every address or a promised speed.
Recommended Free Tools
A TDRA and Khalifa University white paper published in 2024 reported approximately 7,000 combined operator 5G base stations, approximately 1.9 million 5G users and approximately 19.4% 5G penetration in its deployment table. Those are report-period figures, not a current 2026 network inventory. They provide context for the scale of deployment, but they cannot predict the signal in your apartment or office.
TDRA’s Coverage initiative says: “The Center conducts field surveys to test, measure and analyze the quality of mobile operator networks and simulate user experience.” Its stated criteria—latency, data-transfer rate, good coverage, voice-call drop rate, call-setup success and voice quality—are useful categories for describing your own problem to an operator.
When replacing the phone is justified
Consider a new handset only after confirming that the existing one lacks 5G support or is incompatible with the chosen UAE operator. Before buying, verify the exact model number and regional variant with the operator. A generic “unlocked 5G” label does not establish support for every UAE network, SIM configuration or required band.
Do not treat a universal booster, antenna or “5G enhancer” as an evidence-backed solution. The available guidance supports coverage verification, compatibility checks, correct settings and operator escalation; it does not establish a particular accessory that reliably improves UAE mobile service.

A practical decision tree
- No 5G anywhere: Check whether the phone model, SIM, plan and operator account support 5G. Inspect the 5G mode and selected data line.
- 5G outdoors but not indoors: Compare rooms and windows, then report the exact indoor location. The issue may be building attenuation rather than a handset fault.
- 5G icon but slow data: Record latency and throughput symptoms, repeat at comparable times and ask the operator about congestion or a local fault.
- Only one address is affected: Compare the other operator’s map and, where possible, its service at that address before switching.
- Calls fail while data works: Report call-setup, drop and voice-quality symptoms separately; TDRA treats voice measures independently from data.
- Performance changes after selecting another network mode: Keep the mode that gives the most useful service for your priorities and tell the operator exactly what changed.
The short checklist
- Check TDRA, e& and du maps for home, work and regular routes.
- Remember that map coverage and a 5G icon do not guarantee speed.
- Confirm the exact phone variant, 5G plan, SIM or eSIM and selected data line.
- Use the handset’s 5G network mode; on iPhone, compare 5G Auto and 5G On deliberately.
- Toggle Airplane Mode, then retest in the same location.
- Record indoor/outdoor position, time, data symptoms and call behaviour.
- Escalate with those details and compare the alternative operator at your actual locations.
