To earn Bean in How to Fish, finish the story within one hour. The dependable community route is Lighthouse → Forest → Desert → Rocks → Volcano, followed by the final item hand-in and activation of the RHIB. Use a separate save, skip optional activities, and keep each boss drop until its required hand-in is confirmed.
What counts as finishing the run?
Bean is described by community guides as completing How to Fish within one hour. For a conservative finish, do not stop at the final boss kill: complete the final Fin/tail hand-in, receive the RHIB keys, and activate the RHIB. Steam’s exact timer start, pause behavior, treatment of loading, and completion frame are not documented in the available guides, so use a continuous external clock and leave a margin.
The route below reflects community guidance checked against game version 1.0.11 on September 4, 2026. The guides report that Patch 1.0.5 fixed travel to locked islands; do not rely on launch-week island-skip shortcuts. Later patches may change details.

- Start a fresh, separate run for Bean so your regular playthrough remains untouched.
- Learn the required progression before starting the timed attempt. Follow the quest tracker and unlock order rather than relying on a remembered shortcut.
- Leave collectibles, optional achievements, gambling, and exploration for another run.
- Keep unusual boss bodies and trophies until the associated hand-in is confirmed. Selling or losing a progression item may mean repeating an encounter or delaying an unlock.
- Choose weapons and purchases you can execute reliably. Community guides differ on optional upgrades and purchase order; no single shopping list is established as mandatory.
Follow the five-island route
1. Lighthouse
Earn enough for the opening equipment and Beer. Give the full Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper, but keep the Empty Beer Can for the Spider Crab encounter. Defeat the Crab and preserve its progression drop until its hand-in yields the Boat Keys. One fan guide recommends buying the $10 Radar before sailing; another route guide emphasizes confirming the Radar and Boat Keys before leaving. Treat the purchase order as route advice, not a universal requirement.

2. Forest
Collect three Leeches and complete the Modified Leech objective to trigger the Giant Piranha. Defeat it, retain its Skeleton, and complete the required hand-in before sailing onward. Some community routes recommend a shotgun; an engine purchase is described as optional in one guide. Pick a fight setup you can use consistently rather than spending time copying an exact build.
3. Desert
Catch a fish accepted by the Tourist, receive the Carrot, and use it to trigger the Pufferfish. After defeating it, keep its progression remnant and complete the hand-in that opens the next route. A fan guide suggests skipping the grill if you have enough health; cooking and healing are a conditional detour, not a required step in every attempt.

4. Rocks
Use the Tuna to trigger the Terrorizing Bird, also called the Albatross in community material. Defeat it, preserve its Head, and complete the progression hand-in. Guides differ on upgrades and weapon choices, so prioritize a reproducible fight strategy. A September 2026 community guide suggests reaching the completed Rocks state at about 45 minutes; this is a planning benchmark, not an official cutoff.

5. Volcano and the ending
Complete the remaining Scientist/catch objective, then use the Bowhead Whale to trigger the Mutated Bowhead encounter. Defeat it and keep the Fin/tail for the required hand-in. Receive the RHIB keys and activate the RHIB to finish. One community guide sets a practical target of activating the ending around minute 55–59 to leave execution margin; it is not an official split.

Use checkpoint times as planning aids
A September 2026 Gamers.Wiki community guide gives these approximate landmarks. They help identify where a run is spending time; they are not official fail conditions, and missing one does not by itself determine whether the achievement is lost.

Should you use Easy mode or co-op?
Easy mode
A How to Fish Wiki guide reports that Easy mode in Patch 1.0.9 reduced creature health by 25% and creature damage by 50%. That may make fights faster or safer, but the community checkpoint guide says achievement eligibility on Easy has not been officially guaranteed by the developer. Treat it as version-specific community advice, not certainty. If you want to avoid that uncertainty, use a difficulty for which you are confident the achievement will count.

Co-op
The cited NerdsChalk guide discusses co-op, but the available route material does not establish that co-op is universally faster or confirm all achievement eligibility conditions for every session setup. More damage can be offset by coordination and route control. If attempting co-op, agree on the route and hand-in responsibilities in advance, and verify the achievement appears after the ending.

Common run-saving mistakes
- Leaving an island before confirming progression: Check that the quest update, key, or required unlock has registered before sailing.
- Spending or losing a boss drop: Keep distinctive bodies and trophies until their hand-in is complete.
- Stopping at the boss kill: The conservative finish is after the final hand-in and RHIB activation.
- Adding side activities mid-run: Optional tasks, farming, and exploration can consume the margin needed for the story route.
- Following old skip advice: The route sources report locked-island travel fixes in Patch 1.0.5; follow the current unlock progression.
