Trackmania is listed as free to play on Steam, so you can install it and begin racing without buying Club access. You will need a Ubisoft Account, and the first useful step is to start with the free Starter access, learn the easiest official campaign tracks, and then sample the rotating weekly and hourly modes.

Trackmania is a precision-driving game wrapped in a track-building sandbox. The free tier is therefore useful for more than testing the controls. You can practice against your own best time, earn medals and trophies, play selected competitive modes, use local multiplayer, and build your own courses. The main limitation is the breadth of campaigns and community activities, not an expiration timer on the basic game.
How to start playing Trackmania for free on Steam
- Open the Trackmania store listing in Steam. Confirm that your PC meets the listed requirements and begin the installation from the game page.
- Launch the installed game. Steam identifies a Ubisoft Account as required. If you do not already have one, create it when the game asks; if you have one, sign in and complete the account-linking step.

What to have ready
Have enough storage for the listed 3 GB installation plus ordinary room for updates, and make sure Windows and graphics drivers are current enough for your hardware. Starter is a genuine playable tier rather than a timed demonstration. Ubisoft says it is available across five environments: Red Island, Blue Bay, Green Coast, White Shore, and Stadium. The free selection is designed to let you learn the handling model, compete for medals, and try the game’s creation tools before paying for expanded content.
Official campaign racing
Starter includes the easiest tracks from each season’s official campaign. The selection is narrower than the complete campaign available to Club members, but it supplies structured practice: you can learn the surface types, improve a personal time, and work toward medals without searching for a community server first.
Use the campaign as a repeatable training loop. Drive once for a clean finish, watch where your ghost gains or loses distance, and then change one part of the run. This makes the time-trial format less overwhelming than trying to memorize a whole season at once.
Weekly and hourly activities
- Weekly Shorts: short player-created challenges that change weekly.
- Weekly Grand Track: a featured weekly race available to Starter players.
- Weekly Grand Enduro: a longer event accessible to free Starter players through Arcade Channel.
- Arcade Channel: hourly racing that rotates through available activities.

Schedules and the currently featured tracks rotate. Treat the in-game schedule as authoritative instead of relying on a remembered event time. A mode can be included in Starter and still be absent from the channel at the moment you look.
Local and solo play
- Personal-best ghosts on all tracks let you compete against your own previous run.
- Local hotseat and split-screen support lets people share one PC.
- A PC local server is available for local hosting.
- Leaderboards, medals, and trophies provide progression even when you are not buying Club.
Hotseat is useful when players want to take turns on the same display, while split-screen is better for simultaneous local races. Steam’s tags confirm Controller and Shared/Split Screen support, but they do not make a controller mandatory.
Creation and editing
Starter includes track creation with more than 3,000 three-dimensional blocks and items, plus PC replay and skin editors. You can therefore switch from driving to designing without upgrading. Begin with a short route and a clear finish rather than filling the editor with every object. Test the track yourself, check that each checkpoint can be reached at speed, and revise confusing sections. The large item count is an option for experimentation, not a requirement for making a playable first track.
Starter versus Club
The important distinction is breadth, not whether the free version is playable. Starter gives selected campaign tracks and rotating activities; Club opens the broader catalogue and additional club features. Steam describes Club as a one-year access option, while Ubisoft’s documentation describes the extra content and activities associated with Club access.

Do not treat Starter as a trial that expires. It is the free access level. Consider Club when you specifically want every seasonal campaign, a larger community catalogue, featured daily events, premium skins, or online room hosting.
No numeric Club price is stated here because the current amount can vary by region, platform listing, promotion, and billing period. Check the live Steam or Ubisoft listing if cost is the deciding factor, and remember that you can continue using Starter without making that decision immediately.
January 2026 update: new environments and progression
In a January 26, 2026 announcement about an update planned for January 27, Ubisoft Nadeo described four new vistas: White Shore, Green Coast, Red Island, and Blue Bay. The update also introduced or highlighted Weekly Grand Track and Grand Enduro events and changed medal progression. Because the announcement describes a dated release and event schedule, check the live game for the current implementation.
How the dated medal gates work
The January 2026 notice says White and Green campaign tracks remain free and unlocked. It describes the following gates for the other campaign colors:

These thresholds belong to the progression system described in that January 2026 update. If a later patch changes them, the in-game campaign screen takes precedence. In practical terms, collect early medals steadily instead of assuming every color is open from the first launch.
Weekly Grand Track and Grand Enduro
The update notice describes Weekly Grand Track as a 10-lap race against 31 other cars. It says Starter players can enter it. Grand Enduro is described as a 60-lap race after a qualification phase and is accessible to free Starter players from Arcade Channel. The published event times in the notice use Central European Time (CET); do not assume those times are still current or that they match your local time. Open the live schedule before planning a session.
These formats reward consistency. A short campaign track may let you restart after one mistake, while a 10-lap or 60-lap event asks you to avoid repeated errors over a much longer run. Treat the first attempt as course familiarization and use later attempts to manage clean exits, checkpoint approaches, and controlled speed.

Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate or image-quality setting. Those specifications only state the hardware level Steam lists for running the game. Keep additional free disk space for updates and normal Steam installation overhead.
If your machine is close to the minimum, begin with conservative graphics settings and adjust after confirming that the game runs reliably. Avoid treating the recommended specification as a guarantee of a fixed frame rate; display resolution, background applications, drivers, and later updates can all affect results.
Keyboard, controller, and local multiplayer
Steam tags Trackmania with Controller and Shared/Split Screen. A PC gamepad is therefore an optional input choice, especially useful if you prefer analog steering or plan to use split-screen. Then sample one changing mode
Try a Weekly Short for a compact community challenge or wait for the hourly Arcade Channel rotation. If the weekly Grand Track or Grand Enduro is available, their longer formats show how Trackmania changes when consistency matters more than a single fast lap.
Finish by creating or editing
Open the track editor and place a small number of blocks first. Test every checkpoint, drive the route yourself, and remove sections that are impossible to read at speed. The editor’s large item library is useful only after the basic route is fun and finishable.

You expected every campaign track to be free
Starter is free, but it does not include every seasonal campaign track. Begin with the easiest tracks offered in Starter. The full campaigns and additional activities are part of Club access.
You cannot find a particular weekly event
Weekly Shorts, Arcade Channel rotations, Grand Track, and Grand Enduro are schedule-dependent. Look at the current in-game activity list. The January 2026 announcement’s CET times are historical event information, not a permanent timetable.
