Before planning a Tomb Kings campaign, confirm that you own the right content on the same game client. Total War: WARHAMMER III includes access to Immortal Empires, while the digital Rise of the Tomb Kings pack unlocks Settra the Imperishable, High Queen Khalida, Grand Hierophant Khatep, and Arkhan the Black. SEGA’s ownership guidance, updated June 18, 2026, says purchased content must be associated with the same client as the game.
Once access is confirmed, Tomb Kings campaigns are built around deliberate growth rather than rapid conventional recruitment. Skeleton infantry gives you a dependable starting force, but stronger units require buildings and limited capacity. Dynasty research expands the number of armies you can command, Canopic Jars compete between immediate campaign benefits and long-term crafting, and the Mortuary Cult turns resources into items, banners, and elite constructs.
Check your Tomb Kings access before starting
You do not need to buy an earlier base game to use the Tomb Kings content in WARHAMMER III. The ownership rules are:

If a Lord is missing, close and restart the game client, confirm that the DLC is enabled there, and check that you are not launching the game through a different account or storefront. Do this before troubleshooting campaign menus or reinstalling anything.
Which Tomb Kings Lord should you start with?
There is no reliable official difficulty ranking for the four Lords. The better choice depends on the starting position shown on your current campaign map, the nearby threats, and whether you prefer a conventional expansion game, a character-focused faction, or a campaign that emphasizes the Tomb Kings’ unusual roster interactions. Patch updates can change positions, rewards, and practical difficulty, so treat any recommendation as a playstyle judgment rather than an official rating.

Read the starting objectives and faction effects before choosing. Compare the settlement layout, hostile factions within marching distance, available trade contacts, and which Books of Nagash objectives are currently shown. A Lord who looks attractive in an older guide may no longer have the same opening after later patches.
Understand the Tomb Kings economy before your first construction queue
The official Total War Academy faction guide is useful for understanding the original Tomb Kings design, but it refers to earlier campaigns and should not be treated as a complete WARHAMMER III build order. Its durable advice is to protect growth, use inexpensive income buildings, and avoid filling every settlement with military chains immediately.
Make the capital your development project
Settlement growth controls access to higher-tier buildings. If you spread growth investment evenly across every minor settlement, you can delay the capital’s next tier and therefore delay the buildings that unlock advanced units. A practical opening principle is to let the capital lead development while minor settlements provide income, basic defenses, or the specific regional chain you actually need.
- Use low-cost income or treasury buildings when they do not delay an important growth threshold.
- Build only the military chains that support your next army plan instead of constructing every unit line at once.
- Watch the capital’s growth requirement and projected completion each turn.
- Keep enough cash for settlement upgrades and emergency replacements rather than spending the entire treasury on optional construction.
Do not mistake the old advice for a fixed turn-by-turn build
The evidence does not establish a universal opening sequence, a required number of armies by a particular turn, or a single optimal province plan. Enemy movement, settlement ownership, diplomacy, and your chosen Lord can change the correct decision. Use the capital-first principle as a guide, then adapt to the threats shown in your campaign.

How Tomb Kings recruit units
Tomb Kings recruitment is constrained by both buildings and capacity. The Academy’s foundational explanation identifies Skeleton Warriors and Skeleton Spearmen as the two limitless starting units. They are the dependable infantry core available before you develop the specialized chains.

Capacity is a strategic resource
Building an advanced unit chain does two things: it unlocks recruitment and establishes a limit for how many of that unit type or group you can field. The older Academy guide also notes that if a building providing capacity is destroyed or lost, units already in the field are not automatically deleted. You may, however, lose the ability to recruit replacements until the capacity source is restored.

Before you march an army toward a target, open the unit or recruitment panel and check the current and maximum capacity for the units you intend to replace. A planned army of constructs, chariots, or other advanced units can stall if the province has the building but not enough available capacity.
What “free recruitment” does and does not tell you
The Academy describes Tomb Kings recruitment as free, but that historical statement should not be turned into a claim about every current upkeep value. Unit upkeep, campaign effects, difficulty modifiers, and patch changes can alter the practical cost of maintaining an army. Use the live unit card and treasury forecast in your campaign for current numbers.

Dynasties determine how many armies you can command
Dynasty research is the main long-term answer to the Tomb Kings’ army limit. The Academy’s older tactics page says that researching a major dynasty provides another army slot. Without dynasty progress, adding another army is not simply a matter of saving gold and recruiting a lord.
Patch 6.3 changed the dynasty system for WARHAMMER III: research penalties for the six dynasty technologies were reduced, and the update added further effects and unit-capacity benefits. The exact values and availability should be read in your current dynasty panel because later fixes or balance changes can alter the interface.

A practical dynasty decision process
- Open the faction’s dynasty panel before spending research points elsewhere.
- Compare the next dynasty’s army-slot benefit with its displayed research time and any penalties.
- Check whether the dynasty also improves capacity or another effect that supports your intended roster.
- Choose a research path that matches the army you can actually recruit; an army slot without buildings, income, or capacity is only potential.
- Revisit the panel after major expansion, because the best dynasty target can change when a new province or strategic threat appears.
Do not research a dynasty solely because an old guide calls it the best. Patch 6.3 specifically reduced the penalties that made some choices feel excessively expensive, so older rankings may no longer describe the current trade-off.
Canopic Jars: choose between momentum and long-term value
Canopic Jars are not a single-purpose currency. Patch 6.3 states that Tomb Kings can gain Jars from post-battle kills and spend them through Nehekharan Decrees or the Mortuary Cult. That creates an opportunity cost: a Jar used for immediate campaign relief cannot also fund a banner or another cult recipe.

How to decide in the current turn
- Use the cash option when a settlement tier or defensive repair prevents a larger loss.
- Use research when the accelerated technology or dynasty timing affects your next army or expansion window.
- Use Garrison Sally only where the settlement’s immediate survival is genuinely at stake.
- Craft a banner or cult reward when you already know which army or lord will use it.
- Read the displayed cost and effect every time; do not assume a value from an older campaign guide.
There is no fixed Jar-spending order that works for every Lord. Your current treasury, research target, settlement safety, and available trade resources determine the opportunity cost.

Use the Mortuary Cult as a planning tool, not a shopping list
The Mortuary Cult links several parts of the campaign: Canopic Jars, trade resources, gold, items, banners, and Legions of Legend. Open its panel whenever you gain a new resource or a major battle changes your treasury. The important question is not “What can I buy?” but “Which recipe changes my next strategic decision?”

For a defensive army, a banner or item that improves staying power may be more useful than a general-purpose reward. For an army intended to capture settlements, a construct-related unlock or a movement-supporting item may have greater value. If you cannot name the army, lord, or battle plan that benefits from a recipe, keep the resources flexible.
Account for resource scarcity
Trade resources can be limited by geography and diplomacy. A recipe that looks cheap in gold may be unavailable because the required resource is not connected to your trade network. Check the current resource requirement, trade access, and delivery time before planning a cult purchase around it.

Books of Nagash remain important, but their locations and effects should be read from the current campaign rather than copied from an old map. Patch 6.3 moved some book locations for certain factions, added a Khalida-specific location, and strengthened book effects. It also improved Dune Restoration, which can restore fallen constructs after battle.

- The distance, terrain, and hostile factions between your capital and each objective.
- The reward’s relevance to your intended army composition.
- Whether pursuing the book now would expose your capital or delay a necessary settlement upgrade.
A book is an objective, not automatically your first destination. Secure the nearby settlements and a sustainable economy before sending your only army across the map. Later, assign a book to the army whose role benefits from its effect instead of treating every reward as equally valuable to every faction.

A reliable first-campaign procedure
- Verify ownership. Confirm WARHAMMER III, Immortal Empires access, and the Rise of the Tomb Kings pack on the same client.
- Read the starting screen. Record the Lord’s objectives, faction effects, nearby enemies, and the Books of Nagash locations shown in the live interface.
- Inspect the capital. Identify its next growth threshold, current income, available building slots, and any military chain needed for your first advanced unit.
- Secure the immediate area. Capture or defend nearby settlements while avoiding an expedition that leaves the capital exposed.
- Keep a basic army affordable. Use the two starting Skeleton infantry types as the dependable core while capacity and buildings develop.
- Open the recruitment panel before constructing. Confirm the building, capacity source, and replacement availability for every advanced unit you intend to field.
- Choose a dynasty deliberately. Compare the army-slot benefit, research timing, capacity effects, and current penalties in the dynasty panel.
- Review Canopic Jars after battles. Decide whether cash, research, Garrison Sally, a banner, or another Mortuary Cult result addresses the most immediate need.
- Develop with purpose. Let the capital progress toward higher tiers, and add military buildings in minor settlements only when they support a defined roster plan.
- Recheck after each major patch. Patch 6.3 changed Jar income, decrees, dynasty effects, banners, book locations, and Dune Restoration; later fixes can adjust details again.
Common beginner mistakes and recoveries
Building every military chain immediately
This can delay settlement growth and leave you with many unlocked options but insufficient capacity, income, or army slots. Recover by prioritizing the capital’s next tier, demolishing or replacing a low-value chain only when the current interface confirms the benefit, and recruiting the basic skeleton core while you wait.
Planning an army around capacity you do not have
A unit may be unlocked yet unavailable because its capacity is full. Check the capacity line in the recruitment panel and identify the building that supplies another slot before changing the rest of the army.
Spending every Jar as soon as it appears
Immediate cash can be useful, but a later dynasty or Mortuary Cult opportunity may be more valuable. Compare the displayed decree and recipe options against your next settlement upgrade, research completion, and expected battle.
Following an old Books of Nagash map
Patch 6.3 moved some locations and added a Khalida-specific location. Treat the current Books panel and campaign map as authoritative for your save.
Assuming one Lord is universally easiest
No official source establishes that ranking. If an opening feels difficult, examine the starting geography, enemy proximity, army composition, and objective distance before concluding that the Lord is objectively unsuitable.
First-campaign checklist
- Game and Tomb Kings DLC are owned on the same client.
- Immortal Empires is available from your WARHAMMER III installation.
- You have read the selected Lord’s current objectives and faction effects.
- The capital is receiving enough growth to reach its next useful tier.
- Your first advanced unit plan has both a building and available capacity.
- You have opened the dynasty panel and identified the next army-slot decision.
- You have checked current Canopic Jar decrees and Mortuary Cult recipes before spending.
- You have confirmed Books of Nagash locations in the live campaign rather than an older guide.
- Your first expansion protects the capital and supports a defined economic or military goal.
Creative Assembly’s Patch 6.3 developer blog summarized one aim of the Tomb Kings changes with the phrase “Simply put, pace.” In practical terms, that means building a campaign that keeps moving: grow the capital, add capacity before promising advanced armies, research dynasties when another army is strategically useful, and spend Canopic Jars where they solve the problem in front of you.
