The best way to begin Star Wars Outlaws is to adjust the settings first, learn to use Nix before entering guarded areas, and treat stealth, alternate routes, and syndicate reputation as equal parts of your toolkit. Kay Vess is often outnumbered, so charging every patrol usually creates a harder fight than necessary. A few minutes spent choosing a comfortable challenge level, checking accessibility options, and observing a compound can make the opening hours much more manageable.

This spoiler-light guide covers the first-session decisions that matter: settings, difficulty, stealth, Nix, alarms, reputation, platform choice, the official trial, and PC requirements. It draws on Ubisoft’s current game and platform information and the beginner advice published by StarWars.com. Platform availability, demo access, editions, and store specifications can change, so confirm the listing for your region before buying.

What Star Wars Outlaws is and what to expect

Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world adventure set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. You play Kay Vess, a scoundrel travelling with her companion Nix. Ubisoft’s overview combines blaster combat, stealth, gadgets, distractions, syndicate missions, reputation choices, speeder exploration, and Trailblazer space dogfights. That mix means the game is not simply a cover shooter: information, positioning, relationships, and choosing when not to fight are central to progression.

Ubisoft lists August 30, 2024 as the release date and identifies Ubisoft as publisher and Massive Entertainment as developer. The official game page covers the broad systems, while the Ubisoft Store listing supplies the current PC specifications and product formats. The advice below focuses on how to approach those systems rather than revealing story events.

#1 Best Overall
Star Wars Outlaws for Xbox Series X
  • Explore the galaxies in familiar planets and new planets with the first open world game of Star Wars

Do this before the first mission

Open Settings before committing to a difficulty

From the main menu, open Settings and review the available categories before you start. The official beginner guide identifies Gameplay, Cognitive, Color, Vision, and Hearing options. Useful examples include color-blind settings, text-to-speech, and larger subtitles. These are not only for players with a diagnosed accessibility need; larger text, stronger contrast, or spoken text can make a long open-world session easier to follow.

Look specifically for Gameplay Experience. The guide names Story, Regular, and Hard choices that affect player health and enemy difficulty. Pick the setting that lets you pay attention to exploration and decisions rather than forcing repeated attempts. Ubisoft’s guide says these options can be changed during play, so your opening selection is not a permanent commitment.

  • Choose Story if you want the least demanding combat while learning movement, stealth, and Nix.
  • Choose Regular if you want the standard balance and are comfortable pausing to study patrols.
  • Choose Hard only if you actively want enemies and survivability to demand more careful execution from the beginning.

The labels and behavior of settings can be revised by updates, so use the current in-game descriptions as the final authority if they differ from an older guide.

Set subtitles, audio, and visual options for your room

Do not wait until a quiet dialogue line or a dark stealth section exposes a readability problem. Turn on larger subtitles if you sit far from the screen, use text-to-speech if reading dense menus is tiring, and select a color-blind preset when enemy or objective colors are difficult to distinguish. Hearing options can help separate important sounds from background noise. Make one change at a time, then test it in the first playable area so you know which setting solved the problem.

Check controls before you need them

Use the controls section to identify the buttons for crouching, taking cover, calling Nix, using distractions or gadgets, and opening the map. You do not need to memorize every command. You do need to know how to stop, scan the situation, and issue Nix a command without searching through a menu while an enemy is approaching. If a control feels awkward, change it immediately; the game’s early lessons are a safer place to build muscle memory than a guarded compound.

Choose where and how to play

Ubisoft currently lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC storefronts, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. The right choice is mostly the system you already use and the way you want to play, not a universally established performance ranking. Ubisoft’s Switch 2 announcement specifically describes handheld play, touch controls for menus and selected minigames, gyroscope-assisted aiming, and motion controls for selected features.

Platform option What the official information establishes Best fit to consider
PlayStation 5 Listed as a supported platform on Ubisoft’s game information. Players who already use Sony’s current console.
Xbox Series X|S Listed as a supported platform on Ubisoft’s game information. Players who already use Microsoft’s current console.
PC Ubisoft lists Windows, hardware, memory, storage, and target-resolution requirements. Players who want adjustable graphics and have hardware that meets the listing.
Steam Listed among the PC product formats on Ubisoft’s store information. Players who keep their games in the Steam ecosystem.
Switch 2 Ubisoft describes handheld play, touch input for menus and selected minigames, gyroscope aiming, and selected motion controls. Players who value portable play or those control options.

The Switch 2 announcement says the system offers “new ways to play Star Wars Outlaws at home or on the go with intuitive touch controls for menu navigation and select minigames, gyroscope-assisted aiming, an optimized handheld mode, and immersive motion controls for key gameplay features.” That is a description of supported features, not a promise that every activity uses touch or motion input.

Use the official trial if you are undecided

Ubisoft advertises a free three-hour gameplay demo. Its description places the trial in a Tatooine section where Kay and Nix seek a mercenary for their crew. Demo access can vary by platform, country, account, and promotion, so open the game’s current listing on the platform you intend to use and confirm that the trial is offered before relying on it. A trial is useful for checking whether the camera, stealth rhythm, subtitle size, and control layout suit you; it is not evidence that every later area will feel identical.

Understand editions without overbuying

Ubisoft describes Gold and Ultimate editions as adding items such as a Season Pass, cosmetics, and a digital art book. Ubisoft’s Switch 2 launch information says buying that version includes the base game and Season Pass, whose contents include story packs and cosmetics. Contents are platform-dependent and can change, so read the current regional store page for the exact edition.

Nothing in the beginner guidance establishes that a higher edition is required to learn stealth, use Nix, enter compounds, or complete the main game. Start with the edition that gives you the content you actually want; extra cosmetics and story packs are optional for a new player.

Use this first-session sequence

  1. Review settings and controls. Check Gameplay Experience, subtitles, color, hearing, and vision options. Confirm the commands for cover, Nix, gadgets, and the map.
  2. Begin at a comfortable difficulty. Story, Regular, and Hard can be changed later according to Ubisoft’s beginner guide, so choose for learning rather than pride.
  3. Pause before entering your first guarded space. Observe patrol movement, note cover, and identify the direction in which an alarm-capable enemy could see or hear you.
  4. Send Nix to gather information. Use the companion to reveal enemy positions before Kay commits to a route.
  5. Remove the alarm problem first. If an enemy is marked as an alarm risk, prioritize that threat or plan a route that keeps it from detecting you.
  6. Search for another entrance. A large compound may have more than one way in. Do not assume the obvious gate is the intended route.
  7. Leave and build reputation when necessary. If a location remains too difficult, a side mission connected to the relevant syndicate may improve your standing and create a less hostile approach later.

This sequence prevents a common new-player mistake: escalating a difficult encounter before understanding whether the game is offering information, a different route, or a relationship-based solution.

Make stealth your default when Kay is outnumbered

Observe before moving

When several enemies guard an area, stop at the edge of their detection space and watch a complete patrol cycle if you can. Look for gaps between moving guards, solid cover, alarm equipment, and a path that lets Kay retreat. The official beginner guide recommends observing patrol patterns and using cover instead of assuming every encounter should begin with a firefight.

Stealth is not a requirement to avoid every confrontation. It is a way to control the number of threats you face at once. A quiet approach can reveal an alarm route, separate a guard from a group, or let you reach an objective without spending health and ammunition on enemies who do not need to be fought.

Plan the alarm before the takedown

Identify which enemy can call for help or activate an alarm. A takedown that leaves an alarm threat untouched may create a larger problem than the guard you just removed. The guide specifically advises prioritizing enemies marked as alarm risks. If the marked enemy is protected by other patrols, wait for a gap, use Nix to create an opening, or choose a different path rather than rushing.

Use cover as a route, not a single hiding place

Move from one usable piece of cover to the next, keeping a fallback position in mind. Standing in the open after crossing a gap is often more dangerous than the approach itself. If detection begins, break the line of sight and reassess instead of automatically sprinting deeper into the compound. A short retreat can reset your plan and expose a safer angle.

Turn Nix into an active part of every plan

Nix is more than a story companion. Ubisoft’s beginner guide says Nix can reveal enemy positions, distract or attack enemies, sabotage equipment, disable alarms, and fetch items. Treat those actions as a sequence of options rather than a single special move.

Scout first

Use Nix to reveal enemy positions before Kay moves into a blind corner. Scouting gives you the information needed to choose cover and identify an alarm risk. It also reduces the chance that Kay will walk into a patrol while focused on an objective marker.

Create a distraction instead of forcing a fight

A distraction can pull one enemy away from a group or make a gap in a patrol. Once the guard moves, Kay can cross, reach cover, or approach an objective from a better angle. The goal is not always to defeat the distracted enemy; sometimes the safest result is simply passing through while attention is elsewhere.

Use sabotage and alarm disabling deliberately

Nix can sabotage equipment and disable alarms. Use those abilities when they remove the reason an encounter could spiral. If an alarm device controls the whole compound, disabling it before a risky move may be more valuable than attacking a random guard. The guide also notes that Nix can attack, but an attack should serve a plan: isolating a target, creating an opening, or stopping an alarm threat.

Ask Nix to fetch items when the route is unsafe

Fetching lets Kay obtain an item without exposing herself to the same line of sight. Before ordering it, check whether the action will draw attention or leave Kay without cover. Nix’s versatility is strongest when you combine it with observation: scout, create an opening, disable the alarm, then move.

What to do when a guarded area feels impossible

Recheck the approach

Back away from the entrance and circle the perimeter. Large compounds can have multiple entrances, and the obvious front gate may be the most heavily watched. Look for a side route, a less exposed piece of cover, or a position from which Nix can affect equipment before Kay enters.

Change the order of operations

If you are detected immediately, the problem may be sequence rather than difficulty. Try scouting before moving, dealing with the alarm risk before other enemies, or disabling the alarm before attempting the objective. Avoid spending every tool at once; keep one option available for the moment when a patrol unexpectedly changes direction.

Improve syndicate reputation

Ubisoft’s beginner guide says side missions can improve reputation. A Good standing with a syndicate can allow Kay to enter some locations that would otherwise require stealth. When a compound is still too demanding, look for a side mission associated with the relevant syndicate, complete it, and return after your standing improves. This is a progression choice, not a failure state: the game’s reputation system can turn a forced infiltration into a more permissive visit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lower the challenge temporarily

If the route and tools are clear but survivability is the barrier, revisit Gameplay Experience and select a lower setting. Ubisoft says the choice is adjustable during play. Lowering difficulty to learn a section, then raising it later, is a valid way to keep momentum while you learn how patrols, alarms, and Nix interact.

When combat is the better choice

Stealth is a useful default when Kay is outnumbered, not a command to avoid all combat. A firefight can be reasonable when the area is open, the alarm threat is already controlled, or a clean escape route is available. Before firing, ask three questions:

  • How many enemies can see Kay if the first shot starts a fight?
  • Can an alarm call additional enemies or change the route out?
  • Would Nix, cover, a distraction, or another entrance reduce the number of opponents?

If the answers point toward escalation, retreat and reset. If the answers show a contained encounter, use cover and keep moving between protected positions. The game’s official overview includes blaster combat and gadgets alongside stealth, so learning when to switch approaches is more useful than treating one style as mandatory.

Build a practical exploration mindset

Read the world before following the marker

An objective marker tells you where to go, not necessarily how to enter. At the edge of a location, spend a moment looking for cover, side paths, alarm equipment, and patrol loops. This habit supports both stealth and combat because it gives you a retreat route if the first plan fails.

Treat reputation as access, not just a score

Syndicate reputation changes the way some locations can be approached. Side missions that improve standing may save time later by allowing entry that would otherwise demand stealth. Consider reputation when deciding what to do next: the most efficient mission is not always the nearest one if another activity makes a difficult destination easier.

Use the speeder and wider exploration as recovery time

Ubisoft presents speeder exploration as one of the game’s core activities. After a demanding infiltration, moving through the open world can provide a change of pace while you decide which syndicate mission or location to tackle next. Keep your next objective flexible; the game is designed around exploration, missions, reputation choices, and returning to places with a better plan.

Expect space combat to be a distinct activity

The Trailblazer is used for space dogfights, another system named in Ubisoft’s overview. Do not assume that success on foot automatically teaches every space encounter. When the game shifts activities, take a moment to learn the relevant controls and camera behavior rather than carrying over assumptions from stealth sections.

Meeting the minimum specification describes Ubisoft’s listed target; it does not guarantee identical results on every driver, display, background workload, or later patch. Make sure the game is installed on an SSD with at least the stated capacity available, and verify whether your Intel Arc setup has Resizable BAR enabled as specified. If your hardware is close to the boundary, use the platform store’s current requirements rather than relying on an older screenshot or third-party estimate.

Common beginner mistakes and quick fixes

  • Starting on a difficulty that blocks learning: change Gameplay Experience; the beginner guide says it can be adjusted during play.
  • Entering through the most visible gate: circle the compound and search for another entrance.
  • Ignoring the alarm marker: make that enemy the first priority or route around it.
  • Saving Nix for emergencies: use scouting, distraction, sabotage, alarm disabling, attacks, and fetching as part of the initial plan.
  • Fighting while outnumbered: break line of sight, return to cover, and observe another patrol cycle.
  • Repeating a failed infiltration: change the route or complete a relevant side mission to improve syndicate reputation.
  • Buying an expanded edition for unclear reasons: compare the current edition contents; the base game is sufficient for learning the core systems.
  • Assuming a demo is permanent: check the current platform listing because the advertised three-hour trial and its availability can change.
