Start by learning your game’s controls, then treat combat as a cycle of watching, responding, and repositioning—not a race to empty your attack buttons. Keep enough stamina for a defensive move, and explore elsewhere when a fight is overwhelming. Those principles are useful starting points, but Soulslike games differ: the specific mechanics below are grounded in Elden Ring and should not be assumed to apply to every game.
What should you learn before your first difficult fight?
Find the selected game’s controller layout or key-binding screen and identify how to move, adjust the camera, lock onto a target, attack, defend, dodge, and use items. Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring Starter Guide walks through those basics for that game; other titles may use different inputs or offer different actions.

Before committing to a tough encounter, try the controls somewhere relatively safe. Check how your character moves while locked on, how far a dodge travels, and how long a basic attack takes. The goal is not to master everything at once, but to avoid learning the buttons under pressure.

In Elden Ring, attacks and other actions commit the character to animations. A long attack may leave little time to react until it finishes, and repeated panic rolls can carry you into an incoming strike. Bandai Namco’s combat guide emphasizes patience and observing an enemy before choosing a response.

Use a short observe-and-respond loop
- Watch the wind-up. Look for how an enemy signals an attack and whether it is aimed at your current position.
- Choose one defense. Dodge or block when appropriate; do not roll repeatedly just because an attack is coming.
- Act during the opening. After the enemy’s attack leaves it vulnerable, try one or two attacks rather than committing to a long sequence.
- Reset your position. Make space and watch for the next pattern instead of continuing to attack automatically.
This is a practice method, not a guarantee that every enemy follows the same timing. For Elden Ring, dodging, blocking, and parrying are distinct options. The publisher describes parrying as a timed, high-risk, high-reward technique that takes practice; it is not a prerequisite for beginning the game. Learn one defensive response at a time.
How should you manage stamina?
Think of stamina as an action budget, not a bar to spend as quickly as possible. In Elden Ring, Bandai Namco’s starter guide explains that stamina regenerates over time, is not consumed outside combat, and that reaching zero prevents further actions that use stamina. Attacks, dodges, blocks, and other actions can draw on it, so spending the whole bar attacking may leave no capacity for a response.

- Make a small number of attacks, then pause long enough to see what the enemy does.
- Avoid dodging repeatedly when one deliberate dodge or a block would meet the immediate threat.
- Notice how much stamina your chosen actions use and how quickly it returns in the game you are playing.
The exact stamina rules and which actions consume it vary by game. Check the tutorial or in-game guide rather than assuming another Soulslike works like Elden Ring.

In Elden Ring, Guidance of Grace points toward important locations, and the map lets you mark places to revisit. Bandai Namco’s gameplay overview describes comparing the danger of different areas and taking on a less threatening route first. A difficult boss does not have to be your next task: you can leave, explore, and return later.

Turn a roadblock into a scouting plan
- Check side paths and map locations for equipment, consumables, or other useful discoveries.
- Look for available upgrades or healing improvements before deciding that a fight must be won immediately.
- Mark an obstacle or route you want to revisit so exploration has a clear next step.
- If the game offers alternate routes, consider whether another path is more manageable right now.
Bandai Namco’s overview of Elden Ring names equipment, recipes, Spirit Ashes, and cooperative play among the tools that can help players approach challenges. These are options in that game, not universal Soulslike systems or requirements for success.

Choose by the kind of challenge and exploration you want, rather than relying on a universal “best first game” or difficulty label. Elden Ring is one option if an open world and flexibility about the order of challenges appeal to you. Bandai Namco contrasts its structure with earlier Souls games’ more interconnected, linear paths, while noting that timing, observation, and patience remain important to combat. That is the publisher’s feature comparison, not an independent ranking of the genre.

Before choosing another title, check how it handles progression and assistance. Ask whether its world is open or more tightly connected, whether you can defer a difficult encounter, and whether its combat emphasizes dodging, blocking, deflection, or another response. Support for summons, cooperative play, upgrades, and flexible character builds also differs. Confirm those details for the particular game instead of assuming Elden Ring is representative.
