The fastest way to start RuneScape: Dragonwilds is to choose your platform and storefront first, confirm that your Windows PC meets the requirements if applicable, install the correct edition, then begin by gathering materials, establishing a safe foothold, crafting basic equipment, and following the game’s exploration-and-progression loop. Dragonwilds reached full release on 15 September 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. It is a survival-crafting adventure set in the RuneScape universe, not the traditional RuneScape or Old School RuneScape MMORPG.
This guide covers the decisions that can prevent a frustrating start: storefront ownership, Jagex and Steam account requirements, PC hardware, installation, solo and cross-platform play, and a practical approach to your first sessions. Exact opening quests, recipes, and tutorial menu paths can change with updates, so the advice below focuses on the systems and choices that remain useful without inventing a fixed walkthrough.
What RuneScape: Dragonwilds is—and what it is not
Dragonwilds takes place on Ashenfall, where you explore, gather resources, build shelter and workstations, craft equipment, develop skills, complete quests, fight creatures, and prepare for dragon encounters. The survival systems are tied to progression: collecting materials is not busywork on the way to combat, because those materials support your base, equipment, consumables, and ability to reach more dangerous areas.
Although it uses the RuneScape setting, Dragonwilds is a separate game from the long-running RuneScape MMORPGs. Do not expect the same character onboarding, user interface, economy, quest presentation, or account progression. Treat it as a survival-crafting adventure with RuneScape-inspired skills, magic, lore, and enemies.

The full-release version is the relevant version for a new player in October 2026. References to the April 2025 Early Access launch describe the game’s history, not a current requirement to play an unfinished build.
Choose your platform and where you will own the game
Your first practical decision is the platform and storefront that will hold your license. On PC, the Steam and Jagex Launcher editions are separate installs and separate purchases. Owning one does not grant access to the other, so decide where you want the entitlement before paying or downloading.
| Route | What you need | Important limitation or note |
|---|---|---|
| Steam on Windows PC | A Steam account, the Steam edition, and a Windows PC that meets the requirements | The Steam listing states that Epic Online Services is required and supports linking to a Steam account. Steam ownership does not provide the Jagex Launcher edition. |
| Jagex Launcher on Windows PC | A Jagex Account and the Jagex Launcher edition | This is a separate install and purchase from Steam. A Jagex Launcher entitlement does not transfer to Steam. |
| Epic Games Store on Windows PC | An Epic Games account and the edition offered in your region | Jagex names Epic Games Store as a PC storefront at full launch. Confirm current regional availability and account-linking prompts in the store before purchase. |
| PlayStation 5 | A PlayStation 5 and the console-store edition | Jagex lists PlayStation 5 as a full-release platform and says crossplay is available. The current console store determines installation and any online-service requirement. |
| Xbox Series X|S | An Xbox Series X or Series S and the console-store edition | Jagex lists Xbox Series X|S as a full-release platform and says crossplay is available. Check the current Xbox store for installation and online-service terms. |
There is no universally best platform in the official material. Choose the device you already use, the storefront where you want to own the license, and the platform that lets you play with the people you care about. On PC, storefront ownership matters more than small launcher preferences because the editions do not automatically share access.

Using Steam
You need a Steam account to purchase and install the Steam edition. The Steam listing also identifies Epic Online Services as required. That service can prompt you to link an Epic Online Services identity with your Steam account during setup or first launch. This is an online-services connection, not a transfer of your Steam purchase to another storefront.
Rank #2
Using the Jagex Launcher
The Jagex Launcher route uses Jagex Account credentials. You sign in to the launcher with that account, select the Dragonwilds tab, and install the edition associated with the Jagex Launcher. If you bought the Steam edition, opening the Jagex Launcher will not make that purchase appear there; the two versions remain separate.
Using a console
Console players obtain the game through the PlayStation or Xbox store and follow that platform’s sign-in flow. The reviewed official material confirms the console platforms and crossplay, but it does not establish a single account-creation sequence or a universal console online-subscription rule. Follow the current prompts shown on your console rather than assuming the PC steps apply.
Check Windows PC requirements before downloading
These specifications apply to the Windows PC version. Jagex Support lists the same 25 GB storage requirement for both tiers. Requirements can change after updates, so compare your hardware with the current support page and storefront listing immediately before installation.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit processor and operating system | Windows 10, 64-bit processor and operating system |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 | Intel Core i5-10600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB; AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT; or Intel Arc A750 with 8 GB | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with 6 GB or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT with 8 GB |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 25 GB available | 25 GB available |
| Network | Not stated in the minimum column | Broadband internet connection |
How to interpret the two tiers
- Meeting minimum specifications means your system is within the published entry tier; it does not promise the same performance as the recommended tier.
- The recommended tier doubles listed memory from 8 GB to 16 GB and calls for a stronger processor and graphics card. It is the safer target if you want more headroom for modern Windows workloads while playing.
- The table does not state a minimum connection speed. A broadband connection is listed under recommended networking, so do not treat an unspecified speed as an official guarantee.
- Keep at least 25 GB free for the installation itself. Additional free space can be useful for updates, but the official figure establishes 25 GB as the stated requirement.
Install the PC version
Steam installation
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that will own the game.
- Open the Steam Store and search for RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
- Purchase the Steam edition, checking the displayed region, edition, and price before confirming.
- Open Library, select RuneScape: Dragonwilds, and choose Install.
- Select the destination drive when Steam asks, then allow the download and installation to finish.
- Start the game from Steam. Complete any Epic Online Services requirement or account-linking prompt shown by the current build.
Buying through Steam does not authorize the Jagex Launcher edition. If your friends use another storefront, that does not by itself prevent play, because the full-release game supports crossplay; the important issues are the current world or server settings and any account prompts.

- Inspired by the record-breaking online universe that’s captured the imagination of millions worldwide, RuneScape Kingdoms: Shadow of Elvarg is the official cooperative board game for 1-5 players.
Jagex Launcher installation
- Install and open the Jagex Launcher.
- Sign in with the Jagex Account that will own or access the game.
- Select the Dragonwilds tab in the launcher.
- Choose Install.
- Select the destination folder and verify that the drive has at least 25 GB available.
- Choose Download & Install and wait for the launcher to complete the process.
- Launch the game from the Dragonwilds tab and follow the current sign-in or service-linking prompts.
The launcher route is useful when you want to manage the game through Jagex’s own client, but it is not a way to reuse a Steam purchase. Decide on the storefront first, then install the matching client.
Epic Games Store and consoles
Jagex’s full-launch announcement names Epic Games Store as another PC storefront. Use the current Epic listing for the purchase and installation sequence because the official material reviewed here does not document every Epic-specific screen. On PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, use the platform’s own store and library. The available official information confirms those platforms but does not provide a detailed console click path.
Start solo or form a group
Dragonwilds supports solo play and groups of up to four players. You can therefore begin alone and learn the systems at your own pace, or organize a small team before entering Ashenfall. Jagex announced crossplay for the full launch, and its console announcement says crossplay is available, so players on supported PC and console platforms can play together when the current online settings allow it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore inviting friends
- Agree on the storefront or console platform each person is using, while remembering that crossplay means the platforms do not have to match.
- Choose who will host or create the world and decide whether everyone is starting a new shared progression.
- Confirm the world or server setting shown by the current build. The official material establishes that these settings matter but does not publish one permanent menu sequence.
- Make sure every player has completed any required account-linking or online-service prompt before troubleshooting invitations.
If a friend cannot join
- Confirm that everyone is running the full-release version rather than an outdated or incomplete installation.
- Check that each person is using the intended account and storefront entitlement. A Steam purchase will not appear as a Jagex Launcher purchase.
- Recheck the selected world or server and have the host recreate or refresh the session if the current interface offers that option.
- Review platform-network status and any console online-service requirement shown by the platform store.
- If the problem persists, consult the current support information for the exact error message; do not assume that a platform mismatch is the cause when crossplay is enabled.
Understand the core survival loop
Your early decisions become easier once you recognize the repeating loop:
Rank #4
- Immerse yourself in a thrilling tabletop adventure filled with strategy, storytelling, and dynamic character interactions designed to challenge every decision.
- Experience high replayability through immersive roleplay, unpredictable encounters, and evolving tactical choices that keep every session intense and fresh.
- Master your destiny with customizable heroes, intricate quests, and deep world-building that fuel creative expression and competitive gameplay.
- Perfect for RPG enthusiasts seeking complex mechanics, cooperative missions, and richly detailed scenarios that spark imagination and rivalry.
- Premium components, atmospheric artwork, and narrative depth make this board game a must-have centerpiece for any tabletop gaming collection.
- Explore. Move through Ashenfall to discover resources, points of interest, threats, and routes into more demanding regions.
- Gather. Collect the materials needed for tools, equipment, construction, crafting stations, and consumables.
- Build a foothold. Establish a practical place to return to, organize resources, and support further expeditions.
- Craft and upgrade. Turn gathered materials into gear and useful objects rather than carrying everything as raw resources.
- Develop skills and magic. Jagex presents skills and skill spells as practical survival tools as well as combat abilities.
- Complete quests. Quests provide direction and connect exploration, progression, and the wider RuneScape setting.
- Prepare for harder threats. Improve equipment, stock consumables, and learn the risks of an area before committing to tougher encounters, including dragons.
There is no need to rush directly toward a dragon encounter. A well-placed base, reliable supply of materials, and a working understanding of your skills make later expeditions less wasteful. At the same time, excessive hoarding can slow progress; use resources to create the tools and infrastructure that let you reach new areas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to approach your first sessions
First session: establish control
- Confirm that you can move, open the inventory, interact with objects, and return to the world after any account or service prompt.
- Gather nearby basic materials and identify a defensible, convenient place for an initial foothold.
- Craft the first practical tools and equipment that the available recipes permit rather than carrying only raw materials.
- Keep a reserve of common materials so that an unexpected repair, construction task, or new recipe does not end the expedition immediately.
- Use the map and nearby landmarks to create a route between your foothold and resource areas.
As your skills develop
- Read skill and magic descriptions as survival guidance. A spell or skill may improve travel, gathering, crafting, defense, or combat rather than functioning only as damage.
- Take quests when you need a clear objective, but continue exploring when a quest sends you toward a new region or resource.
- Upgrade equipment in an order that matches your play style: gathering-focused tools for a builder, defensive and offensive preparation for a fighter, or a balanced kit for a first playthrough.
- Prepare consumables before entering an unfamiliar or dangerous area. Returning to a base to restock is part of the intended loop, not a failure.
Before a difficult expedition
- Empty enough inventory space for new materials.
- Carry the equipment and consumables your current skills support.
- Record or remember the route back to your foothold.
- Decide what you are trying to accomplish—resource collection, quest progress, exploration, or combat—so you can retreat when that goal is complete.
- In a group, tell teammates which resources or objectives you are prioritizing so four players do not scatter without a shared plan.
Build a cooperative routine for four players
A four-player group does not require formal classes, but dividing responsibilities can reduce duplicated effort. One player can focus on establishing and improving the base while others scout, gather, craft, or handle combat preparation. Rotate roles as your skills grow instead of locking someone permanently into one task.
Agree on storage and expedition rules early. Decide whether shared materials go into one central stockpile, whether rare items are reserved for a specific upgrade, and when the group returns to base. Clear expectations prevent the common co-op problem of one player spending everything needed for another player’s tool or quest objective.

Common starting problems and practical fixes
The game will not install
- Verify that the chosen drive has at least 25 GB available.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the storefront account that purchased the edition.
- On Steam, install from Library after purchasing; searching the store alone does not start the installation.
- On the Jagex Launcher, select the Dragonwilds tab and use Install rather than looking for the game in a different launcher section.
- If the store shows a different edition, stop and check the entitlement before buying again.
The game runs poorly on PC
- Compare the processor, graphics card, RAM, Windows version, and DirectX support with the published minimum table.
- If your computer is only at the minimum tier, avoid interpreting that as a recommended-performance promise.
- Close unnecessary applications, ensure the game is installed on a drive with adequate free space, and apply current system and game updates.
- If the hardware is below minimum, upgrading settings alone cannot change the published compatibility position; consider a supported console or a stronger PC.
You cannot join a friend
- Check that every player has the same current game version and has completed required account or service links.
- Confirm that the host selected the intended world or server and that the session is open to the invited players.
- Remember that crossplay is available, but storefront entitlements remain separate on PC.
- Check the platform’s network status and any current service notice before repeatedly reinstalling.
Which starting route should you choose?
| Your situation | Most sensible starting route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You already use Steam and want the simplest PC-library integration | Steam edition | The official installation path is purchase in the Steam Store, then installation from Library. |
| You prefer Jagex’s client and already use a Jagex Account | Jagex Launcher edition | The launcher provides a dedicated Dragonwilds tab and direct installation, but it requires its own purchase. |
| Your friends are on different supported platforms | Use the platform you already own and coordinate crossplay world settings | Full-release crossplay is available; a matching platform is not required, although account and session setup still matters. |
| Your Windows PC is close to or below minimum specifications | Check the requirements before purchasing; consider a supported console if your PC is not compatible | The minimum tier is specific, and the official material does not promise operation below it. |
| You want to play alone and learn without coordinating schedules | Start a solo world | Solo play is supported, and the core exploration, crafting, skills, quests, and combat loop works without a party. |
Your first-day checklist
- Choose Steam, Jagex Launcher, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S before purchasing.
- Confirm the account and entitlement required by that route.
- On Windows, compare your hardware with the minimum and recommended table and free at least 25 GB.
- Install through the matching storefront or launcher.
- Resolve any Epic Online Services or account-linking prompt before inviting friends.
- Choose solo or a group of up to four and coordinate the host’s world or server settings.
- Gather materials, establish a foothold, craft useful equipment, and begin developing skills and magic.
- Use quests and exploration to decide where to go next, then prepare supplies before entering more dangerous areas.
Dragonwilds is easiest to learn when you treat every expedition as preparation for the next one. Start with a platform and storefront you understand, build a dependable base, spend resources on tools that expand your options, and let your skills, quests, and discoveries determine the pace. That approach works whether you are alone, joining three friends, or using crossplay across PC and console.
