Start PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS by completing Basic Training, then learn the match’s survival loop: choose where to land, collect equipment, stay ahead of the shrinking Blue Zone, and outlast the other players. After that, pick Solo, Duo, or Squad and learn a few PC keyboard-and-mouse controls. The available maps can rotate by region, so the map directory is not a promise that every map will appear in your lobby.
How to play PUBG? Start with Basic Training
If you are new or returning after a long break, begin with the in-game Basic Training rather than trying to learn every weapon, map, and command at once. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS’ July 2026 Update 42.2 notes describe a refreshed Basic Training that takes about 10 minutes. It introduces the controls, Blue Zone survival, items, communication, reviving, and driving—skills that matter in live matches.
Follow the training prompts and focus on understanding what each action does, not on memorizing every detail. In particular, make sure you can move, change posture, interact with equipment, and recognize what the Blue Zone is asking you to do. Training also covers communication, reviving, and driving, so it can help you understand team-oriented situations even if your first match is Solo. The point is to make the basic actions less unfamiliar before the match starts, not to master every situation in one session.
Update 42.2 also introduced a Beginner Training system alongside the refreshed Basic Training. The official notes establish that it was added, but do not make it a substitute for learning the core match loop. Use the current in-game menu to see what training options are available to your account and platform; labels and onboarding features can change over time.

PUBG also lists Training Mode at Camp Jackal for practicing weapons, equipment, parachuting, and driving. Treat it as a place to revisit a skill you want to work on, rather than a substitute for learning the match’s basic objective. Basic Training is the guided introduction; Camp Jackal is useful when you want to spend extra time on a particular practice area. Training options and in-game labels can change, so use the current in-game menu and prompts to find the available practice modes.
A practical first-session sequence
- Complete Basic Training. Follow its lessons through movement, survival, items, communication, reviving, and driving.
- Choose one match mode. Decide whether you want to learn alone or with teammates before queueing.
- Focus on the survival loop. In your first match, pay attention to landing, finding equipment, watching the Blue Zone, and moving when needed.
- Review one unfamiliar control at a time. Check the in-game control settings if a command does not match your expectation.
- Use practice for specific gaps. Camp Jackal’s Training Mode is listed for weapons, equipment, parachuting, and driving practice.
This order keeps the first session manageable. You do not need to study the full map directory or change every key binding before queueing. Learn enough to move, understand the zone, and recognize the equipment prompts; then use later matches or practice time to address whatever felt unclear.
Understand the match’s survival loop
The central PUBG loop is straightforward: pick a landing place, gear up, fight when necessary, and keep moving as the Blue Zone shrinks. The goal is to be the last surviving player in Solo or the last surviving team in Duo or Squad. A fight is not the only measure of progress; reaching a safer position and remaining alive also advances the objective.

Think of these parts as linked decisions rather than separate chores. Where you land affects what you can search and when you may meet opponents. Time spent searching competes with time available to move. The Blue Zone keeps changing the area you need to consider, while opponents can make a route or a fight riskier. For a beginner, the useful habit is to keep asking what your next survival decision is: find equipment, check the zone, move, or respond to an encounter.
1. Choose where to land
Your first decision is where to descend. A landing choice affects how quickly you reach buildings or other places to search and how soon you may encounter opponents. There is no single landing spot that is right for every beginner or every match. For a first attempt, prioritize being able to orient yourself and start collecting equipment rather than trying to force a particular fight.
Once you are on the ground, take a moment to identify your surroundings and decide where to search next. Learning to land, orient yourself, and move toward useful areas is a skill of its own. You do not need to understand the whole map before you can make a sensible local decision. If the landing itself felt confusing, note that as your next practice goal; Training Mode at Camp Jackal is listed for parachuting practice.

2. Search for equipment
Find equipment before seeking out opponents. The game’s overview describes finding equipment as a core part of the match, and Basic Training covers items. As you search, use the prompts and your inventory to understand what you have collected. Avoid turning looting into an endless pause: the Blue Zone and the rest of the match continue to shape where you need to go.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteEarly on, learn the process rather than trying to memorize a complete item hierarchy. Notice how you collect and equip items, and take time between matches to check the controls if an interaction is unclear. Your immediate task is to become equipped enough to continue, while keeping track of the zone and your next movement. If you are playing with others, communication is one of the skills covered in Basic Training; use it to coordinate rather than assuming teammates know what you intend to do.
3. Watch the Blue Zone and move in time
The Blue Zone is a defining part of PUBG’s survival loop. As it shrinks, players must keep moving; delaying a move can leave you with less time to reach a safer area. Check the map and your position during the match, then make movement part of your plan instead of waiting until the zone forces an urgent decision.
When you need to relocate, balance your route with what you can see around you. A direct route may be simple to follow, while taking time to orient yourself can help you avoid moving without knowing where you are headed. The useful beginner habit is consistent: look at the zone, decide where you need to go, and start moving early enough to respond. Avoid becoming so focused on a fight or on collecting more items that you lose track of the reason the match is asking you to move.
4. Fight to survive, not just to fight
Opponents are a threat, but engaging every player you see is not the objective. The official overview describes defeating the remaining opponents as part of the match, while the win condition is being the last survivor or surviving team. A fight makes sense when it supports survival; if it distracts you from the shrinking zone or leaves you without a clear next move, reconsider whether it is worth taking.

For a first match, treat each encounter as a chance to learn how movement, aiming, and positioning work under pressure. If you are eliminated, you can still identify one useful lesson for the next round—for example, whether you noticed the zone in time or whether a control felt unfamiliar. That gives your next attempt a concrete focus without requiring you to master everything at once.

Choose Solo, Duo, or Squad
PUBG’s official overview lists three enduring core choices: Solo, Duo, and Squad. Solo is for playing alone; Duo pairs two players; Squad supports a team of four. Pick according to whether you want to learn independently or play alongside others. A teammate can make the match social and give you opportunities to communicate or revive, while Solo leaves you responsible for your own decisions.
| Mode | Team setup | Good fit if you want to… |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Play alone | Learn at your own pace without coordinating a team. |
| Duo | Two players | Play with one partner and make decisions together. |
| Squad | Four players | Play with a larger team and use communication and team play. |
Solo is a straightforward choice if you want to make every decision yourself and avoid having to coordinate with teammates while learning the controls. Duo gives you one partner to communicate with, while Squad has space for a four-player team. Neither team mode removes the need to survive the zone or make your own decisions, but communication and reviving are part of the team skills covered by Basic Training. If you queue with friends, agree on where to go and keep each other informed; if you prefer to learn quietly, Solo is the clearest fit.
These are the most useful modes to understand first because the official overview identifies them as the core Solo, Duo, and Squad formats. Arcade can include other kinds of matches, but its offerings may be temporary. For example, Update 42.2 described Hot Drop and Solo Deathmatch with service windows in July and August 2026; those windows had ended by October 13, 2026. Do not assume either is currently available. Check the current Arcade screen for what is actually offered.

Understand the maps—and why your lobby may show fewer
PUBG’s official map directory names Erangel, Miramar, Sanhok, Karakin, Paramo, Taego, Deston, Vikendi, and Rondo. That is a directory of maps, not a guarantee that every map is selectable in every region or queue at the same time. Map service can rotate, and availability differs by region.
For two useful size comparisons, KRAFTON’s 2026 official map pages describe Erangel as 8×8 and Sanhok as 4×4. The Sanhok page characterizes its smaller size as leading to faster-paced battles. These details help set expectations, but map size alone does not tell you exactly how a particular match will unfold. Erangel’s map page describes a mix of grasslands, mountains, cities, and towns, so it is a useful example of how one map can contain different kinds of terrain and built-up areas.
| Map | What the official map information establishes | How to use that information as a beginner |
|---|---|---|
| Erangel | 8×8; its official page describes grasslands, mountains, cities, and towns. | Expect varied terrain and built-up areas; use the map and your surroundings to plan where to move. |
| Sanhok | 4×4; its official page says the smaller map leads to more fast-paced battles. | Be ready for encounters to develop quickly, and pay attention to your position and the zone. |
| Miramar, Karakin, Paramo, Taego, Deston, Vikendi, and Rondo | Listed in PUBG’s official map directory; the cited directory does not establish a single current lineup for every region. | Check your lobby or current regional map-service information to see what is available to you. |
Map availability is regional and can change
In an August 11, 2026 map-service letter, PUBG said the selection system in North America (NA), South America (SA), Europe (EU), Russia (RU), and Console had been reduced from five slots to three after an initial service period. For those named regions and platforms, that letter described one fixed Erangel slot and two rotating slots: one large 8×8 map and one small map. It said the detailed lineup would be shared in a future map-service report.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Those details are scoped to the regions and platforms named in that dated letter; they are not a universal or permanent map schedule. The letter also does not establish which rotating maps are currently in those slots. Check the maps shown in your lobby or the latest regional service report before planning around a specific map. A map’s presence in the official directory alone does not mean you can queue for it today. If you are new, there is no need to wait for a particular map before learning the basics: the survival loop and control concepts in this guide apply across the listed map directory.
What are the basic game commands? PC keyboard and mouse
The commands below are PC keyboard-and-mouse defaults documented by PUBG Support. They are not a guide to console inputs or PUBG Mobile touch controls. PUBG Support’s command articles are older, so treat these as a starting point and verify the current mapping in your game if a key behaves differently. You can change key settings in-game under Settings > Control.
| Action | Documented PC default | Beginner note |
|---|---|---|
| Move | W / A / S / D | Move forward, left, backward, and right. |
| Crouch | C | Changes your posture; useful to recognize separately from prone. |
| Prone | Z | Lowers your character to the ground. |
| Jump / vault | Space | The documented default is listed for both actions. |
| Sprint | Shift | Use when you need to move faster; remain aware of where you are going. |
| Walk | Ctrl | The documented command list gives Ctrl for walking. |
| Auto-run | = | The documented default is the equals key. |
| Lean | Q / E | These keys control leaning left and right. |
| Perspective toggle | V | Switches perspective according to the documented default. |
| Aim | Hold right mouse button | Holding the button is the documented aim input. |
| Scope / ADS view toggle | Tap right mouse button | The documented list distinguishes tapping for this view from holding to aim. |
| Cycle weapons | Mouse wheel or 1, 2, 3 | These are documented defaults; your chosen bindings may differ. |
For a first match, the most useful commands to recognize are movement, posture, jump or vault, sprint, and the right-mouse-button aiming input. Do not assume every command behaves identically in every control layout: the support list distinguishes holding the right mouse button to aim from tapping it for the scope or ADS view toggle. If the distinction feels unfamiliar, check the assigned actions in your settings and try them in practice instead of waiting until an encounter.
Check or change a control
- Open Settings in the game.
- Go to Control to view the keyboard and mouse bindings.
- Find the action you want to check and note the assigned key or mouse input.
- Change the binding if needed, then confirm it does not conflict with another action you rely on.
- Try the control in a practice setting before depending on it during a match.
Bindings are personal: the defaults are a documented reference, not a requirement. If a command feels awkward or does not match your setup, check the in-game binding rather than assuming your platform uses the same input. A PC keyboard and mouse are the inputs described by this list; no new hardware is required just because the defaults are documented this way. Console controls and PUBG Mobile touch controls are different and are outside this PC-specific list. Check your platform’s in-game control preset rather than copying the PC keys.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common beginner mistakes to avoid
- Skipping training and trying to learn every system at once. Complete Basic Training first, then focus on one unfamiliar skill in each match.
- Ignoring the Blue Zone while looting or fighting. Check your position and begin moving before the shrinking zone makes relocation urgent.
- Assuming every listed map is available. The map directory and the live regional queue lineup are different things; check your lobby.
- Treating a temporary Arcade mode as a permanent queue. Arcade offerings can have service windows, so confirm current availability in-game.
- Applying PC keys to another platform. The command table is for PC keyboard and mouse only. Check the relevant in-game control preset for your platform.
- Assuming a key mapping cannot be changed. The documented PC settings let players change key settings under Settings > Control.
- Trying to learn every map before playing. The directory is broad, and availability varies; start by learning the shared landing, equipment, zone, and survival loop.
A simple goal for your first few matches
Make each match a focused practice session. In one round, concentrate on landing and finding your way around. In another, prioritize checking the Blue Zone and moving on time. Once those feel less distracting, pay more attention to your chosen mode and the controls you use in encounters. This progression follows PUBG’s actual survival loop without making a beginner memorize every map or command before playing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
