Start by completing the tutorial, then give each dive one clear goal and turn your catch into sushi-restaurant income at night. The basic loop is underwater exploration and fishing, followed by restaurant service; the money and materials you earn help prepare you for deeper, more dangerous dives. Steam’s game description and MINTROCKET’s fact sheet describe this exploration-to-restaurant progression.
How the first days and dives work
Dave the Diver is a single-player adventure with RPG elements. During daytime diving windows, you explore the Blue Hole, catch fish and collect resources. At night, you run a sushi restaurant and use the day’s catch for service. As the game progresses, quests, characters and additional systems expand that routine.
For your first dives, learn the harpoon, basic movement and fast ascent before chasing difficult targets. The Blue Hole’s terrain and ecology change, so a route or catch you find on one dive may not be the whole picture. Follow the main objectives to discover new systems rather than trying to optimize everything immediately.

Oxygen is your practical limit: if it runs out, the fish and items you collected are left behind. Steam’s listing describes that consequence, while the third-party beginner guide notes that speed swimming, taking damage and diving beyond your suit’s depth can increase oxygen loss.

Choose one useful objective
Before descending, decide what would make the dive worthwhile: advancing a quest, catching a particular fish, or gathering materials for a relevant upgrade. A focused plan helps you judge whether another detour is worth the oxygen and cargo space it costs.
Leave room and time for the return
Keep enough oxygen to retrace your route or make a safe ascent. The beginner guide suggests roughly 40% oxygen as a return-planning rule of thumb, not an in-game requirement; the safe margin varies with your route, depth, damage and swimming. If a fight becomes unsafe or the return is getting tight, retreat with what you have rather than risking the haul for one more encounter. Use fast ascent when appropriate.

Choose catches and cargo deliberately
Not all catches use your backpack space equally well. Prioritize quest items, materials needed for an upgrade you actually plan to make, and fish that support dishes the restaurant can serve. A full backpack is not automatically a successful dive if it is filled with low-priority items.

Capture method can affect fish quality
The beginner guide says direct kills usually yield one-star fish, harpoon catches two-star fish, and live-capture tools such as the Steel Net Gun or Tranquilizer Gun can yield three-star fish. Higher-star catches provide more meat and a higher sale price for the same backpack weight, according to that guide. This is a strategy, not a guarantee for every species or situation.

Use tools for the job
Weapon crates let you try different options. The beginner guide presents the Old Harpoon Gun as a general-use choice, the Steel Net Gun for groups of fish, and the Tranquilizer Gun for sharks and other dangerous creatures. These are starter suggestions, not a required build. Concentrate scarce upgrade materials on a main tool instead of spreading them across several weapons before you know which problem you need to solve.
What to upgrade first
Upgrade according to the obstacle that is actually limiting your progress. The beginner guide recommends prioritizing the Diving Suit and Oxygen Tank for safer progression, then improving harpoon effectiveness and backpack capacity. A simple early order is:

- Oxygen Tank: increase the time you can spend underwater before returning.
- Diving Suit: prepare to reach deeper areas more safely as objectives lead you down.
- Harpoon or capture tool: improve your ability to handle the fish and threats relevant to your current goals.
- Backpack: carry more when cargo space, rather than oxygen or depth, is the constraint.
Adjust that order when a quest calls for something specific. Equipment upgrades are preparation for the dangers ahead, not a checklist that must be completed in a fixed sequence; MINTROCKET’s fact sheet describes gear progression as part of exploring the Blue Hole.

At night, use your catch for sushi service. Restaurant earnings can fund diving equipment, while gathered resources support upgrades. This is why a dive’s value is not just its fish count: a useful quest item or upgrade material can help you reach the next depth and improve future catches.

Follow the main objectives to unlock more of the game. Later progression adds staff, farming, fish farms and other systems, so you do not need to master them before the first dives make sense. For now, bring back a purposeful haul, serve it, and put the resulting income toward the next safety or progression bottleneck.
Where you can play
MINTROCKET lists PC and Mac via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5 in its fact sheet. The PlayStation product page notes DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers on PS5 and says the game can be played without motion controls. Choose based on your preferred device and controls; the cited platform information does not establish performance parity or save-transfer support.
