You can make a first song in GarageBand for Mac without buying a keyboard, microphone, or other equipment. Start with a software instrument, Apple Loops, or a combination of both; add a live recording only if your idea calls for one. Then arrange the parts, make a simple mix, and export an audio file or share the project.
What you need to start
GarageBand brings software instruments, loops, recording, effects, mixing, and sharing into one Mac app. Apple’s GarageBand User Guide describes a complete creation workflow, from recording and arranging to sharing. Its version selector lists guide version 10.4.14; that identifies the guide, not necessarily the version installed on your Mac.
You can begin with the Mac’s built-in note-entry and playback tools, software instruments, and Apple Loops. A USB MIDI keyboard is optional: it lets you play and record software instruments using physical keys. A microphone or compatible audio input is useful only when you want to record vocals or an acoustic instrument; an electric guitar or bass also needs a compatible connection path.

Choose a manageable first song idea
Keep the first session small. Pick one goal, such as a short beat, a chord progression, a melody, or a voice recording with an accompaniment. A short sketch is easier to arrange and finish than a full-length song with many parts.
#1 Best Overall
- 61 key keyboard piano kit: complete beginner set with stand, bench, headphones and note stickers.
- Expressive playing: pitch bend wheel and LED panel with 200 rhythms, 200 tones and demo songs.
- Learn faster: Simply Piano lessons and keynote stickers guide kids and adults note by note.
- Quiet practice: headphones keep sessions private in shared rooms and family spaces.
- Everything included: start playing on day one with fewer extra purchases.
Create a new project, then choose a starting point that fits the idea: a software-instrument track for notes you enter or play, an audio track for a microphone or instrument, or a loop-based starting point. GarageBand’s interface labels can vary by app version, so consult Apple’s current guide if your menus differ.
Build the sketch with instruments or loops
Use a software instrument
Choose a software instrument and make a simple part with GarageBand’s computer-based note-entry or playback tools. You can start with a few notes or chords and repeat or refine them as the idea takes shape. A MIDI keyboard can make playing feel more direct, but it is not required to enter or record software-instrument parts.

Use Apple Loops
Open the Loop Browser, listen to options, and add a loop to the Tracks area as a building block for a rhythm or accompaniment. Arrange it alongside your other parts, and add a played or recorded idea of your own so the sketch reflects your musical choices rather than only the selected loops.

Record vocals or an instrument (optional)
For a live performance, choose the relevant audio or guitar/bass track, place the playhead where the take should begin, and optionally enable the metronome and count-in. Start recording and perform. Apple’s instructions for recording sound from a microphone or instrument cover this basic process.
If GarageBand does not receive sound, check that the intended input is selected and that the microphone, instrument, or interface is connected and configured for your Mac. On macOS Mojave or later, GarageBand also needs permission to access the built-in or connected audio input; Apple explains how to allow apps to use the microphone. Hardware setup and compatibility depend on the device, so follow its maker’s current instructions.

Arrange, edit, and mix the parts
Put the song in order
The Tracks area is where you organize the song’s parts. Use regions—the blocks representing recorded or generated material—to move parts into place, loop them, resize them, split or join them, and rename them. First focus on a useful sequence and make sure the parts work together; fine detail can wait until the structure is clear.

Balance before adding effects
Adjust track volume so no part overwhelms the others, then use pan to position parts across the stereo field where appropriate. After the basic balance is working, try plug-in effects sparingly. GarageBand also provides automation for changes over time, as well as project tempo and key settings; use those controls when they solve a musical need rather than as a required checklist.

Export an audio song or share a project
When the sketch is ready, choose the output that matches what you want to do next. Export an audio song when you want a file to listen to or send; keep or share the GarageBand project when you want to continue editing the tracks. Apple’s guide covers export to disk or iCloud and sharing songs to Music, AirDrop, and Mail. The available options and labels may vary by GarageBand version.
Optional equipment, not prerequisites
- USB MIDI keyboard: Consider one if you want to play software instruments on physical keys. Apple documents connecting a USB or MIDI music keyboard; a keyboard with MIDI DIN connections requires a MIDI interface. Follow the keyboard maker’s setup instructions and check whether it needs a driver.
- Microphone or compatible audio input: Useful for recording voice or acoustic instruments, but unnecessary for a sketch made with software instruments and loops.
- Electric guitar or bass connection: Relevant if you plan to record one. Check that the connection path works with your Mac and intended audio input.
If you are considering a keyboard, compare connection type, key count and feel, available desk space, and whether you want a simple controller or extra controls. Apple’s documentation explains connection and software-instrument use, but does not establish a best model or rank keyboards. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility and setup details before buying.
