Wartales: The Mercenaries Edition is an open-world, turn-based mercenary RPG. You lead a company rather than a single hero: recruit companions, keep everyone paid and fed, accept contracts, improve equipment and camp facilities, explore at your own pace, and choose which battles are worth taking. The best first run is built around a company you can sustain, not around rushing toward the hardest-looking encounter.
On Xbox, the US store listing presents a larger Mercenaries Edition bundle and a smaller Starter Edition. Compare the included add-ons and your regional price before buying. You can play alone; online console co-op supports two to four players and requires a qualifying Xbox Game Pass subscription sold separately.
What Wartales is—and what it is not
Wartales does not funnel you through one mandatory opening route. Its core loop is company management wrapped around an open world: travel, look for work, recruit, equip and train companions, develop the camp, craft useful items, and fight tactical battles when you commit to an engagement. The official Xbox description summarizes combat as a “tactical turn-based combat system that rewards careful planning and strategic thinking,” with success depending on the combination of characters, equipment and tactics you bring to each battle.

Choose the Xbox edition before you start
The US Microsoft Xbox Store listing distinguishes a Starter Edition from The Mercenaries Edition. The larger bundle includes the base game and seven named add-ons; the smaller package includes the base game and two of them. The store displayed $129.99+ for The Mercenaries Edition in the United States at the time of the 2026 listing. That is a time-sensitive regional price, not a promise of the current price in another country.

You do not need every expansion to learn the company-management loop or to play solo. Check the live store page for your region, confirm which add-ons are included, and compare the current difference in price with the content you genuinely expect to use. A larger bundle is not automatically the better value if you are still deciding whether the base game fits you.
Platform, solo play and online co-op requirements
The listing identifies Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC as playable platforms. It advertises single-player, online multiplayer and co-op for two to four players, plus Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and co-op. The exact availability and naming of services can change, so verify the current listing when you purchase.

Solo play is supported. You do not need an online subscription to run a single-player company, and no specific class, profession, camp upgrade or expansion is identified as mandatory for a solo start.
Playing with friends on console
Online console multiplayer requires one of the Xbox Game Pass tiers named on the listing: Essential, Premium or Ultimate. The subscription is sold separately from the game. Co-op is listed for two to four players, so plan around that range rather than assuming a larger party of online players can join.

The Xbox Store marks the game Mature 17+ for Violence and Blood and indicates in-game purchases. Consider both the rating and the possibility of additional purchases when deciding whether it is appropriate for a family account.
Your first session: a practical order of operations
The following sequence gives a new Xbox player a learning-friendly start without pretending that there is one correct campaign route.
- Begin with a manageable exploration and combat setting. A current beginner guide suggests adaptive exploration with normal combat difficulty. Treat that as a starting recommendation, not an official requirement. If you prefer a more predictable challenge, compare the settings offered by your current build before confirming the campaign.
- Read the company as a budget. Before accepting work, look at the money available for wages, food and equipment. A contract that pays well on paper can be a poor opening choice if the journey consumes your supplies or leaves injured companions unable to fight.
- Take nearby work first. Early guidance recommends choosing contracts located near one another. Grouping jobs by area reduces unproductive travel and gives the company more time to earn, recover and improve.
- Inspect the risk before engaging. Do not treat every visible enemy as an invitation. If an encounter appears beyond the company’s current readiness, leave the area or return after recruiting, equipping and practising.
- Assign useful work outside combat. Companions can contribute through professions and crafting as well as fighting. Start developing roles that support supplies, equipment or camp efficiency instead of leaving the company’s non-combat needs unattended.
- Upgrade the camp deliberately. Camp equipment helps the team endure and recover. Make improvements that address an immediate bottleneck rather than spending scarce resources on upgrades simply because they are available.
- Enter battles with a plan. Before committing, consider where the engagement will happen, which companions can protect or support others, and what equipment and tactics fit the opponents. Tactical turns reward preparation more than frantic input.
Keep the company financially and logistically viable
Track wages and food together
Wages and food are recurring pressures, so check both whenever you plan a detour. A contract route that crosses the map for a single reward can create several days of costs before the next payment. The practical objective is not to keep every resource at its maximum; it is to avoid a chain of unpaid wages, depleted food and forced fights.
Use geography to reduce downtime
When several contracts are available, favour a cluster that can be completed in one region. This is guidance from beginner coverage rather than a developer rule, but it addresses a real early-game problem: travel time creates expenses without improving the company. Revisit a town or nearby area when you need to turn in work, recruit or restock instead of constantly crossing the map.
Delay optional risks
There is no reward for proving that the company can survive an encounter before it is ready. Returning later with better equipment, more capable companions and a developed camp is a valid part of the game’s open-ended progression. Retreating from a bad matchup protects the wages, gear and experience you have already earned.

Recruitment, professions and camp development
Build complementary roles
The official description places recruitment, professions and crafting inside the progression loop. Think about what each new companion adds to the company rather than counting bodies alone. A recruit who fills a useful combat role or supports a profession can be more valuable than an extra character who duplicates a weakness.
Do not assume that one named class or profession is the universally correct opening choice; the available evidence does not establish a mandatory setup. Select roles that cover the problems you are actually encountering, such as surviving engagements, producing supplies or improving equipment.
Make camp facilities solve a problem
Camp equipment is part of the company’s ability to endure and recover. Prioritise facilities that answer your current limitation: sustaining the travelling group, improving recovery, or enabling the crafting and preparation your contracts require. Reassess after the company grows, because an upgrade that was valuable for a small group may not be the best use of resources later.
Do not confuse expansion content with basic progression
The add-ons in The Mercenaries Edition broaden the package, but the base game already contains the fundamental loop of recruitment, contracts, exploration, camp development and tactical combat. Learn that loop before deciding whether a particular expansion belongs in your next purchase.
How to approach your first tactical battles
Plan before the first turn
Combat is turn-based, so use the information available before committing. Identify which opponents can reach your line quickly, where your companions can stand safely, and which character combinations cover one another. Entering from a poor position can make a fight difficult before any ability is used.

Think in exposure and roles
Keep vulnerable companions from becoming the easiest target, and avoid spreading the group so widely that support cannot reach the character who needs it. Choose equipment and tactics as a response to the specific engagement rather than carrying a single plan into every battle. The official description explicitly frames success as selecting a suitable mix of characters, equipment and tactics for each unique fight.
Know when not to fight
Beginner guides warn that wandering into harder encounters can make an early company struggle. If the group is short on supplies, under-equipped or already injured, disengaging is often the strategic choice. Return after the company has earned money, recruited help, improved equipment or strengthened the camp.
Learn through controlled engagements
Use manageable encounters to understand how positioning, timing and party roles interact. Avoid treating an early defeat as evidence that a particular class or edition is wrong; it usually indicates that the company took a fight or route beyond its current preparation.

- Can the company afford the trip? Account for wages and food during the journey, not only the contract’s stated reward.
- Does it fit the current route? Prefer nearby work or several jobs that can be completed in the same region.
- Is the likely opposition appropriate? Avoid an encounter that appears beyond the party’s readiness; mark it as a return-later opportunity.
- What does success improve? A contract is especially useful when its reward supports equipment, recruitment, supplies or a camp bottleneck.
- What is the exit plan? Know where you can resupply, recover or turn in work before committing the company to a long diversion.
This framework keeps the open world from becoming a sequence of expensive, disconnected errands. It also leaves room for experimentation: once the company is stable, you can take longer routes and more uncertain fights without putting the entire run at risk.

Common first-run mistakes and recovery
Accepting every contract
Symptom: The map fills with obligations while wages and food drain away. Recovery: Prioritise jobs that are close together, complete the route that best supports the company, and stop adding distant work until the budget is stable.
Starting a fight because it is visible
Symptom: The group enters an encounter with inadequate equipment, injuries or too few useful roles. Recovery: Retreat when possible, return to a manageable area, and strengthen the company before trying again. The open-ended structure makes postponement legitimate.
Ignoring non-combat work
Symptom: The company can win battles but struggles to maintain supplies, equipment or recovery. Recovery: Assign companions to useful professions and invest in camp facilities that address the shortfall.

Symptom: You buy content you are not ready to use or cannot explain why you need it. Recovery: Compare the Starter Edition and The Mercenaries Edition contents and your local prices. The base game is sufficient for learning the core systems.
