After Tutorial Island, do not search for a single “correct” build. Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is deliberately open-ended: choose a normal account unless you specifically want restrictions, learn the map and interface in small pieces, then follow one quest or activity that sounds fun. The game has a free starting option, while membership adds a much larger world and more progression choices.
This guide gives you a low-pressure first session, explains the account-mode decision you must make on Tutorial Island, and shows how to use the quest list, Activity Adviser and in-game Wiki when you are unsure what to do next.
Decide your account mode before leaving Tutorial Island
Your most consequential early choice happens on Tutorial Island. Jagex says Ironman status can only be selected there, so read the restrictions before clicking through the final setup screens. If you want the least complicated first character, select the standard account mode.

Standard account: the simplest starting point
A standard account has normal access to player trading and the Grand Exchange. You can buy, sell and obtain equipment through the game’s ordinary economy, which makes it easier to recover from mistakes and try different activities. Choosing standard does not prevent you from adopting personal challenges later; you can still refuse trades, set your own rules or start a restricted character when you understand the game better.

Ironman choices: deliberate restrictions

Ironman can be rewarding if self-sufficiency is the point of your game, but it removes conveniences that help a beginner learn. Hardcore Ironman adds an unusually severe death consequence, and Ultimate Ironman requires you to plan around having no bank. Select one only when those limitations are the reason you want to play, not because you think experienced players require them.
Understand what you are starting with
Free access and membership
OSRS can be started for free. Membership expands the available content with nine additional skills, hundreds more quests, exclusive bosses and raids, a larger map and more bank space, according to the current official store listing. Access, offers and prices vary by region and can change, so check the official game site or store for the current terms rather than relying on an old price quoted in a guide.
You do not need membership to learn movement, combat controls, quests, inventory management or the basic skill system. Spend your first session discovering whether the game’s pace suits you. If you later want the expanded map and activities, membership becomes an informed upgrade instead of a prerequisite you bought before understanding the game.

Jagex lists PC, Steam, iOS and Android versions, with progression carrying across PC and mobile. Use a desktop when you prefer a larger screen and precise pointer control; use a phone or tablet when convenience matters. You can begin on one device and continue on another rather than creating separate progress.
Download the official client from Jagex’s current download pages. Client features and supported versions can change. Be especially cautious with unofficial download links: Jagex’s new-player guidance warns about phishing and points players toward official resources.
Complete Tutorial Island without rushing
Tutorial Island introduces the actions you will repeat throughout OSRS: moving, interacting with characters and objects, combat, inventory use, equipment, prayers and basic skills. Read the prompts, but do not worry about memorising every panel. You can revisit the controls after you reach the main world.
- Learn the point-and-click rhythm. The mouse is central on desktop: click the ground to move, select targets to attack, pick up items, change gear, activate prayers and rotate the camera. On mobile, use the equivalent touch controls.
- Try both click types. Left-click performs the usual action; right-click exposes additional interactions. If an object seems to do nothing, right-click it and inspect the menu.
- Notice the control panel. It contains combat options, skills, inventory and quests. You do not need to open every tab now, but knowing where these categories live will make later instructions easier to follow.
- Make the account-mode decision. Confirm standard or the Ironman variant you intentionally chose before leaving the island. The decision window is tied to Tutorial Island.
Orient yourself in the first few minutes after arrival
Use the minimap for immediate movement
The minimap is your short-range navigation tool. Clicking a point on it moves your character toward that location, which is often faster than clicking individual ground tiles. It also shows nearby landmarks and characters, helping you understand what is around you without opening a large map.

Use the world map when you are lost
Open the world map to search for locations instead of wandering randomly. Search is useful when a quest, item entry or another player names a place you have not seen. You do not need to memorise the whole map; learn the route for the activity you are doing, then look it up again when necessary.
Apply only a few helpful settings
Jagex’s setup guidance suggests hiding roofs, enabling scroll-wheel zoom, setting player attack options to right-click and enabling player-killing skull prevention. These are starting points, not mandatory settings. Preferences differ, and every setting can be changed later. Avoid changing dozens of options at once; make one adjustment, play for a few minutes and keep it only if it makes the interface clearer.
Choose one first-session goal instead of an optimisation route
OSRS is a sandbox MMO built around exploration and making your own path. Jagex describes it as being about “adventure, self-discovery and most importantly: carving your very own path.” That design means a universal skill order would be misleading. A good first goal is one you can explain in a sentence and finish in one sitting.
Quest-first goal
Open the quest list, filter it to quests available to you and read the short descriptions. Pick an available quest whose setting or reward interests you. Follow the quest journal, and use the Activity Adviser if you are unsure which requirements you already meet. A quest gives you a destination, a reason to learn new interactions and a clear stopping point.

Exploration goal
Open the world map and visit a nearby location that looks interesting. Search the map when a place name catches your attention, then use the minimap to navigate. Talk to characters, right-click objects and read the interaction labels. Exploration is productive even when it does not produce an immediate level because it teaches how the world communicates information.
Skill-learning goal
Open the skills panel and choose one skill whose activity sounds enjoyable. Read its in-game or Wiki entry to see the required tools and suggested methods, then try the simplest method available to your character. Do not treat the first method you find as a permanent commitment; early levels are an opportunity to learn the interface and discover whether you like the skill.
Use the quest list, Activity Adviser and in-game Wiki as your navigation system
Quest list
The quest list can be filtered so you can focus on quests available with your current progress. Open a quest entry to read its journal and objectives. When an instruction names an unfamiliar item or place, pause and search rather than guessing. The list is a menu of possible directions, not a checklist you must clear in a particular order.

Activity Adviser
The Activity Adviser recommends quests based on your stats and completed quests. Check it after finishing a quest or raising a skill to see what has become realistic. Recommendations are a way to reduce decision fatigue; they are not a required progression route.

In-game Wiki button
Jagex’s guide describes an in-game Wiki button that can search objects or open relevant entries for items, non-player characters and bosses. Use it at the moment a term becomes confusing. Looking up one item while you are standing in front of it is more useful than opening a long beginner checklist and trying to memorise everything in advance.
How to think about beginner skills
New players often ask which skills to train and where to level them. There is no evidence-backed mandatory order, and the official guidance does not prescribe one. Instead, match the skill to the activity you want to repeat.
- Choose by interest. If gathering, crafting, combat or completing quests sounds appealing, start with the related skill and follow the method shown in its current Wiki entry.
- Let quests supply direction. A quest requirement can give you a short-term target without committing you to a long training plan.
- Use the simplest available method first. Early efficiency gains are less important than learning what the skill does, which tools it uses and how to stop safely.
- Keep one primary goal. Training several skills at once is fine, but write down one next action so you do not spend the whole session switching tabs.
Because training locations, requirements and methods can change with game updates, check the current in-game Wiki entry for the exact activity before travelling. This keeps your plan accurate without pretending that one location is best for every account.
Make movement and interaction feel natural
Point, click and verify
Before committing to an action, hover over a character, object or item and read the cursor text when available. Left-click the obvious action; right-click when you need another option such as talk, examine, use or pick up. This habit prevents many beginner errors, especially when several objects overlap.

Use the scroll wheel to zoom if you are on desktop, and adjust the camera until nearby objects are easy to see. A comfortable zoom level is more valuable than a highly zoomed-out view that makes small interactions hard to target. Mobile players can use touch gestures and the client’s camera controls.
Keep the interface readable
Do not hide panels simply because an experienced player does. Leave the inventory, map and quest information easy to reach while you are learning. As you gain confidence, rearrange the interface around the activities you actually perform.

What to do when you die, get stuck or lose an item
Early mistakes are part of learning the game. If you are unsure what happened, stop moving and inspect your inventory, equipment and the surrounding area before trying another action. Open the relevant Wiki entry from the in-game button, read the quest journal again and search the world map for the named location.
When a route or requirement is unclear, write down the exact message the game displays. Search that phrase in the in-game Wiki rather than relying on a random download or an unverified link from chat. If the issue concerns your account, membership or authentication, use Jagex’s official account settings and support pages.
Standard account or Ironman: a practical decision framework
Ask three questions before selecting a restricted mode:
- Do I want normal access to trading and the Grand Exchange? If yes, choose standard.
- Do I want every upgrade and supply to come from my own activities? If yes, regular Ironman may fit.
- Am I deliberately accepting severe death or storage limitations? Hardcore Ironman adds one-life status, while Ultimate Ironman removes bank use. These are specialist challenges, not beginner defaults.
Group Ironman is appropriate when two to five people intend to coordinate as a team and use group trading or shared storage. If your friends are not committed to the same schedule, a standard account usually leaves you more freedom to play independently.

Session one: learn the loop
Finish Tutorial Island, confirm your mode, adjust only the settings you need, open the quest list and complete one activity. Stop after you understand how to move, interact, check a requirement and find help.
Session two: follow a recommendation
Use the Activity Adviser or quest filters to select another achievable quest. Notice which skills it asks for and train only the missing requirement with the method shown in the current Wiki entry.

Try a skill, a different quest style or a new map area. The purpose is comparison by experience: you are learning what you enjoy, not proving that one route is optimal.

Later sessions: keep a short list
Write down two or three goals, such as finishing a quest, visiting a location or reaching a requirement. Pick one when you log in. This prevents the common beginner problem of opening many guides and completing none of the actions they describe.
Desktop, mobile and accessories
A mouse is central to desktop controls, but you do not need a specialised gaming mouse. Any comfortable compatible mouse is sufficient for moving, attacking, picking up items, changing gear, prayers and camera movement. A USB gaming mouse is an optional accessory for PC players who already prefer one; it is not a requirement and has no established beginner advantage in the available guidance.
Mobile is a legitimate starting platform rather than a companion-only version. Jagex lists iOS and Android support and cross-platform progression with PC. Choose the device that makes it easiest for you to play consistently, and use the official client listings because supported client details can change.
Account security and trustworthy help
Protect the account you are building from the first login. Use Jagex’s official account settings, support and authenticator setup rather than third-party account services. Never install a client from an unsolicited message, and treat links that promise free items, membership or account checks as possible phishing attempts.
When you need a mechanic explained, start with the in-game Wiki button, the official game site and established community references that you can verify. Do not download software merely because another player says it is required. The official client and supported mobile apps are enough to begin.
What success looks like for a new player
Your first milestone is not a particular combat level or a perfectly efficient account. It is being able to choose an activity, find its requirements, travel there, understand the interactions and recover when something goes wrong. Once that loop feels comfortable, the game’s open-ended structure becomes an advantage: you can pursue quests, skills, exploration, group play or later challenges in the order that suits you.
Jagex’s 2026 Google Play listing says more than 300 million accounts have been created since 2001. That is a cumulative figure for the RuneScape franchise, not an OSRS-only population, active-user count or measure of beginner success. It demonstrates the age and scale of the wider game family, but it should not be used as a promise about how quickly a new player will progress.
