The safest way to begin FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE on Nintendo Switch 2 is to play the free Chapter 1 demo before creating a full-game save. The demo covers the opening mako-reactor bombing mission, and Square Enix says its save can transfer to the full game only when a full-game save has not already been created.
Confirm that you own a Nintendo Switch 2, reserve at least 90 GB of free storage for the physical Game-Key Card download, and expect combat that mixes real-time action with strategic, command-based decisions. This edition retells the story through Cloud’s escape from Midgar and includes the Yuffie-led FF7R EPISODE INTERmission; it is the first part of a larger remake project, not the entire original FINAL FANTASY VII.
Begin with the free Switch 2 demo
If you are unsure whether the remake’s tone, opening chapter or hybrid combat suits you, start with the official Switch 2 demo. Square Enix describes it as a playable version of Chapter 1, including the mako-reactor bombing mission. That is enough to test the presentation and the basic rhythm of encounters without committing to the full purchase.
- On your Nintendo Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop and find the FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE demo identified for Switch 2.
- Download the demo and play through Chapter 1. Follow its tutorials and on-screen prompts rather than relying on control instructions written for another platform.
- If you decide to buy the full game, keep the demo save on the console and start the full version without first creating a separate full-game save.
Square Enix’s product information says demo progress can carry into the full game under that order of operations. The transfer is therefore a planning decision: try the demo first, then move directly to the full game if you want to keep the progress.

The save-transfer condition matters
A full-game save created before the transfer will prevent the demo save from being carried over. If that happens, you can still play the full game normally, but the demo’s progress will not be merged into the existing full-game save. Square Enix says the Revival Earrings and Survival Set associated with the transfer are obtainable by other means in the full game, so missing the transfer does not permanently remove those items.
Do not confuse this policy with an older support article that discusses a Nintendo Switch demo. The older FAQ asks whether a save from that original-Switch demo can move to the Switch 2 version; it should be read as a platform-specific answer about the earlier demo. Current Switch 2 product information and the director interview describe a separate Switch 2 demo with the carry-over feature. See the Square Enix support article alongside the current Square Enix game page if you need to distinguish the two versions.
Know what Intergrade contains
INTERGRADE is the first entry in the remake trilogy. It retells the original game’s Midgar material, following Cloud and his companions through the events leading to his escape from Midgar. It is a substantial story, but it does not remake every part of the 1997 FINAL FANTASY VII in one release.
The package also includes FF7R EPISODE INTERmission, a Yuffie-focused side story. It is part of the Intergrade offering rather than a separate original-game chapter. You can treat the main campaign as your introduction to the remake’s version of Midgar, then approach Intermission when you want a different lead character and perspective.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi described the goal in a Nintendo UK interview published 22 January 2026: “The remake series brings FINAL FANTASY VII to the modern era by remaking and reimagining it as a new, fresh gameplay experience.” That wording is useful context for newcomers: this is a modern reimagining with changes in presentation and gameplay, not a simple resolution upgrade of the older release. Read the complete Nintendo UK interview with Naoki Hamaguchi for the director’s explanation.

Confirm that your console is supported
This edition is listed for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s UK product page explicitly says it cannot be played on the original Nintendo Switch. If you own only the original console, do not buy the Switch 2 edition expecting backward compatibility.
Switch 2 owners can play in all three supported modes:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Handheld mode: play directly on the console’s built-in screen.
- Tabletop mode: use the console as a standalone screen with detached controllers.
- TV mode: play through the dock on a television.
Store pages in different regions may use slightly different edition labels. Check that the listing identifies the Nintendo Switch 2 version before purchasing, particularly if a retailer displays older Nintendo Switch products in the same search results. The authoritative platform and mode details are on Nintendo’s Switch 2 product listing.
Prepare storage and an internet connection
The physical Switch 2 package uses a Game-Key Card. Square Enix’s Japanese product page states that the full game downloads on first play and that an internet connection plus at least 90 GB of free storage are required. The card should therefore not be described as containing all of the game’s data; it authorizes the download needed to install and play.
The 90 GB figure is the publisher’s product requirement, not a benchmark of how quickly the game downloads or how much space every future installation will consume. Updates may require additional capacity. Leave more room than the stated minimum when possible so an update does not fail because the console is exactly at the threshold.

Check space before inserting or redeeming the card
- Open your Switch 2’s system storage or Data Management screen and note the available free space. Menu wording can change with system software, so use the storage screen shown on your console.
- Make sure at least 90 GB is free before starting the Game-Key Card installation. If you are close to the limit, archive games you can redownload or remove captures and other data you no longer need.
- Connect the console to a reliable internet connection before beginning the first play. A Game-Key Card does not remove the initial download requirement.
- After installation, retain additional headroom for updates. If the download stops for lack of space, free storage first and then resume it from the console’s software-management screen.
Square Enix’s product page is in Japanese and regional packaging can differ, so check the local box and retailer description for the exact package supplied in your market. The underlying requirement remains the same for the documented Game-Key Card package: internet access and 90 GB or more of free storage for the initial full-game download.

Demo or full game: choose the order that protects your progress
| Option | What it includes or requires | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 demo | Chapter 1, including the mako-reactor bombing mission; save can transfer if no full-game save has been created | Test the opening and combat before buying |
| Full Intergrade game | Main remake story through Cloud’s escape from Midgar plus FF7R EPISODE INTERmission | Play the complete Intergrade package after deciding to continue |
| Physical Game-Key Card package | Internet connection and at least 90 GB of free space for the first-play download; updates can need more space | Use a physical purchase while planning for a large download |
The evidence available here does not establish a current regional price or a separate digital-download size. Compare the exact listing in your region rather than assuming that a digital purchase or a different package has the same commercial terms. What is established for the physical Game-Key Card is that it does not avoid the large first-play download.
Understand the combat before you start
Official descriptions characterize the system as a combination of real-time action and strategic, command-based choices. You will control characters during active encounters while also selecting commands that shape what they do. The design is intended to keep immediate movement and attacks connected to deliberate decisions.
That description is deliberately broader than a button guide. The available official material does not verify Switch 2 button mappings, a recommended difficulty, or an optimal configuration. Do not rely on control diagrams from another console edition if the labels do not match your hardware.
Use the game’s own instruction layer
- Read the tutorial prompts in the opening chapter instead of dismissing them as optional background.
- When a command menu or combat explanation appears, pause long enough to understand what the game is asking before experimenting.
- Check the control and accessibility pages on your own console if you need to confirm a button, camera option or display setting; labels can vary by platform and system software.
- If an encounter feels unfamiliar, use the in-game explanations as the authoritative reference for the Switch 2 release.
You do not need prior knowledge of the original game’s turn-based battles to begin. The remake expects you to learn its real-time movement and command choices together, and Chapter 1 functions as the initial introduction.

A spoiler-light first-session plan
A little preparation keeps the opening focused without turning this guide into a plot walkthrough.
Before launching
- Confirm the software is the Switch 2 edition, not an original-Switch listing.
- If you want transferable progress, start with the demo and avoid creating a full-game save until you have finished deciding whether to continue.
- For the physical package, secure an internet connection and at least 90 GB of free space before starting installation.
- Choose the mode—handheld, tabletop or TV—that gives you the clearest view of tutorial text and prompts.
During Chapter 1
- Follow the opening mission at your own pace and read each combat prompt.
- Pay attention to how real-time actions and command selections are presented; this is more useful than memorizing a control scheme from another version.
- Keep the console connected if you are using the physical Game-Key Card and the full download has not completed.
After the demo
If the opening works for you, purchase or launch the full game while preserving the demo save and before making a new full-game save. If you decide not to continue, no additional setup is required. If you already created a full-game save, continue from that save and obtain the Revival Earrings and Survival Set through the other in-game means Square Enix describes.

“It will not run on my original Switch.”
That behavior is expected for this edition. Nintendo lists it for Switch 2 and says it cannot be played on the original Switch. Verify the console and edition before troubleshooting downloads or storage.
“The physical card started a huge download.”
A large download is part of the Game-Key Card design. The documented requirement is an internet connection and at least 90 GB of free space for the full game on first play. The package is not a complete copy of all game data.

Check whether a full-game save was created before you attempted the transfer. Square Enix’s carry-over condition requires that one has not already been created. If that condition was missed, the full game remains playable and the transfer-related items can be obtained by other means.

“I cannot find a Switch 2 demo.”
Make sure you are looking for the current Switch 2 product information rather than an older support page about the original Nintendo Switch demo. The current Square Enix game page and the Nintendo director interview are the relevant references for the Switch 2 demo and its save carry-over feature.
“The download fails even though I freed exactly 90 GB.”
The publisher’s figure is a minimum. Updates may need additional capacity, and the operating system may require working room while installing. Free more space, reconnect to the internet, and resume the download through the console’s software-management controls.
What to expect after the opening
Once you leave the demo or Chapter 1, the main campaign continues the remake’s interpretation of Midgar rather than moving through the complete geography of the original game. The included Intermission episode adds a Yuffie-led story, giving the package a second playable perspective after you are familiar with the main setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsApproach Intergrade as the beginning of a multi-part retelling. That framing explains why the ending of this release is not the conclusion of every event from the original FINAL FANTASY VII. It also helps set expectations for newcomers who have never played the 1997 version: you can start here without treating the older game as required homework, while still understanding that this release covers only the first major portion of the remake project.
