To get started in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, explore with the tools that reveal different kinds of information, collect skill points as you progress, and treat the Skill Tree and Abilities as separate systems. Find gear at marked locations, through quests, from merchants, and in other specific places rather than expecting ordinary enemy loot to supply a steady stream of new equipment. Develop your settlement as you play: its buildings open up more of the game. There is no universally required beginner build; Ubisoft says you can reset your skill focus without spending in-game currency.

Start with the core progression loop

Valhalla’s early game is easier to understand when you separate its systems. Exploration reveals gear, Books of Knowledge, and other points of interest. Progress earns skill points, which you spend in the Skill Tree. Books of Knowledge unlock or improve Abilities, which use adrenaline in combat. Meanwhile, settlement construction opens additional narrative arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics.

A practical loop is to look around before moving on, investigate useful markers, collect what you find, then spend skill points and try newly acquired options. You do not have to follow a single prescribed route through the tree or commit to one approach for the whole game. Ubisoft’s beginner guidance and skill-path overview describe these systems, but they do not establish an optimal skill order or a single best early-game build.

Think of progression as several connected tracks rather than one checklist. Skill points let you shape Eivor’s development; Books of Knowledge add or improve particular combat options; gear is gathered from specific sources; and settlement construction unlocks more activities and systems. Each track rewards attention, but there is no indication that you need to finish one before engaging with another. When exploring, you can make progress on more than one at once: search for a book or gear location, earn progression, and then decide how to spend the skill point you receive.

Skills and Abilities are different

Skill points go into the Skill Tree

You earn skill points through progression and spend them in the Skill Tree on skills. Ubisoft describes the tree as a way to improve your stats and Power Level as well as unlock skills. Some skills are passive; others are active. Read what a choice does and consider whether it fits how you prefer to approach combat and exploration rather than selecting a branch because it is supposedly mandatory.

Skill focus is reversible: Ubisoft says you can reset it without in-game currency. That makes experimentation a reasonable beginner strategy. If a selection does not suit you, you can change your focus instead of treating an early choice as permanent. The available information does not specify a universally best sequence of skills, so a fixed “must-pick-first” list would overstate what is established.

When considering a Skill Tree choice, distinguish its immediate effect from the broader purpose of the tree. A passive skill can improve an aspect of your character without requiring you to activate it in the moment; an active skill adds an option you can use. The tree also contributes to stats and Power Level, so its role is broader than simply collecting flashy moves. Read each description in the game and pick options that support what you want to do. If your preferences change after trying a choice, the reset option makes adjustment possible without an in-game currency cost.

This is why advice framed as a universal “best branch” can be unhelpful for a new player. Ubisoft’s overview discusses different skill paths rather than declaring one path the right answer for everyone. Use a path as a way to focus your choices, not as a promise that you must specialize permanently. Your practical question is whether a skill suits your approach and whether you want its effect now—not whether a guide has declared a single route mandatory.

Books of Knowledge grant Abilities

Abilities are discovered separately from Skill Tree skills. Books of Knowledge found in the world can grant a new melee or ranged Ability, or upgrade an Ability you already have. When you find a book, check whether it adds something new or strengthens a move already in your collection.

Abilities consume adrenaline. They are therefore a resource-based option rather than an action to use without thought whenever it is available. Learn what each move does, then use it when its effect fits the situation. The beginner guidance does not rank individual Abilities, so choose based on what you actually want a move to do instead of relying on a supposed universal early-game pick.

A useful way to keep the two systems straight is to ask where a new option came from. Skill points earned through progression are spent in the Skill Tree. A Book of Knowledge found in the world is what grants a new Ability or improves one you already have. Discovering a book is not the same as spending a point in the tree, and unlocking a skill does not mean you have found a new Ability. Knowing that distinction makes it easier to understand what to look for while exploring and what to review after returning from an outing.

Because Abilities use adrenaline, learning what a move does is part of using it well. Rather than treating every Ability as an interchangeable attack, consider whether its described effect fits the moment. The documented beginner advice supports deliberate use, not a ranked list of moves or a claim that one Ability is essential. Build familiarity with the options you find and let your preferences guide which ones you use.

Use each navigation tool for its own job

Synin, Odin Sight, and the compass help with different kinds of discovery. Treat them as complementary tools: one helps you spot points of interest, another helps search a nearby area, and the compass directs attention toward important targets.

  • Synin: Use the raven to spot points of interest. It is useful when you want an overview of what may be worth investigating nearby.
  • Odin Sight: Use it to search an area for items and secrets. It is the better tool when you are already in a place and want to check for things you might otherwise miss.
  • Compass: Follow it toward important upgrades and Books of Knowledge. If you are looking for progression-related discoveries, use it as a directional aid rather than relying only on what is immediately visible.

A simple search routine is to scan the surroundings with Synin, travel toward a point of interest, check the compass for relevant targets, and use Odin Sight while searching the location. The tools serve different purposes; using one as a substitute for all the others can leave you less informed about what is nearby or hidden.

For example, if you are surveying an unfamiliar area, start with Synin to spot points of interest and decide what to investigate. Once you are in a location, use Odin Sight to search around for items and secrets. If your goal is to find an important upgrade or a Book of Knowledge, use the compass for direction as you move. This sequence makes each tool’s job clear: Synin helps with the overview, the compass with heading toward important targets, and Odin Sight with a closer search.

These tools are especially useful when you are unsure whether to keep moving or examine an area more carefully. A point of interest is a reason to investigate, not a guarantee of a specific reward. The compass is useful for important upgrades and Books of Knowledge, while Odin Sight is the tool for checking an area for items and secrets. Using the right tool for the question you have—“what is nearby?”, “where should I head?”, or “what might I have missed here?”—is more practical than repeatedly relying on only one.

Where to find gear, and how to think about it

Look for equipment at specific locations

Do not assume that ordinary enemy looting will provide a steady supply of new weapons and armor. Ubisoft’s guidance says gear is found at specific locations. Other stated sources include legendary items, quest rewards, and merchants. When you want to expand your equipment choices, investigate locations and objectives rather than expecting every encounter to produce a new piece of gear.

This distinction matters early: a weapon or armor set may require exploration or a particular reward instead of repeated combat. Use the compass for important upgrades and keep an eye out for locations that invite investigation. The available official guidance does not give a comprehensive item-by-item location list or identify one best early-game weapon, so it would be misleading to promise a specific best-in-slot route here.

There is no need to turn every fight into a gear-farming plan. If an encounter does not yield a new weapon or armor piece, that does not mean you are overlooking a routine drop. Keep exploring, follow points of interest, complete quests, and check merchants as possible sources. The central advice is about where to look, not about a guaranteed reward from any particular location or activity.

Choose gear around your approach, not a universal ranking

Ubisoft’s skill-path guidance connects gear detail to a Wolf-aligned path, but the available information does not rank particular beginner items or establish that one alignment is best for every player. Use the equipment you discover as an opportunity to support the way you want to play, and read its details in the game before deciding whether it merits attention.

  • Challenge yourself with the most varied collection of enemies ever in Assassin's Creed
  • Shape the growth of your character and your clan's settlement with every choice you make
  • Explore a Dark Age open world, from the harsh shores of Norway to the beautiful kingdoms of England

When comparing two pieces, consider the weapon type or armor, the effect or alignment shown in the game, and whether you want to commit resources to that item. The evidence here does not establish exact upgrade costs, a required upgrade sequence, or a best early gear combination. Avoid spending effort chasing a named set solely because someone calls it mandatory; the guidance supports exploration and choice, not one prescribed loadout.

For a beginner, a useful comparison is therefore personal rather than absolute. Look at the equipment you actually have, consider its type and any detail or alignment presented in the game, and ask whether it supports the way you want to approach play. A weapon or armor set that fits your preference is more meaningful than a ranking divorced from your choices. Ubisoft’s support for Wolf-aligned gear detail does not amount to a claim that all other gear is inferior or that a Wolf-aligned setup is the required starting point.

Be cautious about committing to an upgrade based on a universal recommendation when the advice you are following does not give costs or a progression order. The official beginner material establishes where gear can come from and encourages using the game’s systems; it does not identify an exact early-game item to buy, an upgrade budget, or a definitive combination. Check the item details and make your own comparison rather than assuming a specific purchase or upgrade is essential.

Why settlement growth belongs in your early plans

Your settlement is more than a place to return to between excursions. Ubisoft says construction there opens narrative arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics. That makes development part of the broader progression loop: exploring and completing objectives can go hand in hand with expanding what the settlement makes available.

Pay attention to settlement construction as it becomes available instead of treating it as unrelated housekeeping. New facilities can connect to more of the game’s content and systems. However, the official guidance cited here does not set out a definitive first-building order, so there is no supported universal sequence to follow. Read each available construction option and choose what sounds useful to you rather than delaying development until you have found a supposedly perfect order.

The practical reason to keep settlement development in mind is that its value goes beyond a single reward. The official description links construction to story arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics. That breadth makes it worth checking in on as part of normal progress, even if you are mainly focused on exploration or combat. You do not need to choose a supposedly perfect first facility based on advice that does not establish one; simply pay attention to what construction options are available and what each is described as opening.

If you are choosing between continuing to explore and returning to consider settlement construction, remember that the two activities serve different parts of progression. Exploration helps you discover gear and Books of Knowledge, while construction opens more content and systems. There is no stated mandatory order that says one must always come first. Let the options presented in your game and your immediate interests determine what you do next.

A practical beginner routine

  1. Check what is around you. Use Synin to spot points of interest, then decide which ones are worth investigating.
  2. Search places thoroughly. Use the compass to orient yourself toward important upgrades and Books of Knowledge. Once you reach an area, use Odin Sight to look for items and secrets.
  3. Collect knowledge and gear as you explore. Books of Knowledge provide new or upgraded Abilities; gear is found at specific locations and may also come from legendary items, quests, or merchants.
  4. Spend skill points with your play style in mind. The Skill Tree improves stats and Power Level and offers passive and active skills. Try choices that appeal to you; the focus can be reset without in-game currency.
  5. Learn each Ability before relying on it. Abilities cost adrenaline, so understand what a move does and use it deliberately.
  6. Make settlement construction part of your progress. Building there opens missions, story arcs, activities, bonuses, and mechanics. Choose among the options available without assuming a particular first upgrade is required.

This routine is a flexible way to orient yourself, not a required checklist. You can use Synin when you want to survey an area, turn to the compass when seeking important targets, and use Odin Sight to inspect a place closely. Books and gear are exploration rewards with different sources, while the Skill Tree and settlement give you separate ways to develop. If one outing does not turn up a particular item, there is no reason to assume the whole approach has failed: different discoveries come from different locations and activities.

When you earn skill points, take a moment to read the choices rather than spending them just to follow a route someone else calls optimal. When you find a Book of Knowledge, check whether it grants or upgrades an Ability and remember its adrenaline cost. When you return to the settlement, review construction possibilities. Those small checks help you understand the systems without requiring a rigid build plan.

What not to overthink

  • There is no mandatory Skill Tree branch established by the official guidance. Skill focus is resettable without in-game currency, so an early choice does not need to be treated as permanent.
  • Skills are not the same as Abilities. Progression points are spent in the Skill Tree; Books of Knowledge in the world grant or upgrade Abilities.
  • Ordinary enemy loot is not a reliable gear plan. Look for specific gear locations, quest rewards, legendary items, and merchants.
  • Settlement development is meaningful, but an exact first-upgrade order is not established. Build according to the options and benefits that matter to you.
  • Do not read general beginner advice as a patch-specific build ranking. Ubisoft’s cited essential tips were published November 9, 2020, and its master guide followed November 11, 2020. They explain core systems, not a current balance-tested build or a ranking of individual items.

The goal is not to optimize every early decision before you have had a chance to learn what you enjoy. The resettable skill focus, the separate way Abilities are discovered, and the varied sources of gear all support a more exploratory approach. Use the information in each item or skill description, try options that appeal to you, and revise your focus if your preference changes. That is more consistent with the official beginner advice than treating an unverified build list as a rulebook.

Edition and platform checks before buying

If you are deciding which version to buy rather than simply beginning a game you already own, check the edition and platform details for your region before paying. Ubisoft Help’s page, updated September 30, 2026, lists Standard, Deluxe, Ragnarök, Complete, Collector, and Ubisoft+ Premium editions, and warns that content can vary by region. The available information does not specify the contents of each edition or establish current prices or stock, so compare the listings shown for your platform and region rather than assuming the names mean identical inclusions everywhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform compatibility and supported peripherals are platform-specific. Confirm those details against the edition and platform you plan to use; do not infer compatibility from a listing for a different platform.

In other words, check the actual edition listing where you intend to play. The edition names alone are not enough to establish the exact included content for your location, and one platform’s peripheral details should not be treated as proof of compatibility on another. If you already own the game, these purchase checks are not part of the progression advice; they matter when comparing versions or making a new purchase.

What the official guidance does—and does not—settle

Ubisoft’s 5 Essential Tips for Playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, published November 9, 2020, is the source for the distinctions among Synin, Odin Sight, the compass, Abilities, gear sources, and settlement value described here. Ubisoft News’ Everything You Need to Master Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, published November 11, 2020, also points players toward official weapons, skills, and gameplay guides and mentions settlement building. Ubisoft’s Which path is right for you? supports the points about stats, Power Level, resettable skill focus, and Wolf-aligned gear detail. Ubisoft Help’s edition page was updated September 30, 2026 and lists editions, notes regional variation, and gives platform-specific peripheral information.

These official pages explain how to orient yourself in the game; they do not establish current patch-specific balance, an optimal skill order, a best early weapon, exact gear-upgrade costs, or an exact settlement build sequence. Treat the 2020 beginner tips as foundational system guidance, not as a current balance-tested build ranking. Where the advice stops short of naming a best option, the sensible beginner choice is to inspect the options in the game, decide what suits you, and experiment where the game allows it.

Are skills and Abilities the same thing?

No. Skill points earned through progression are spent in the Skill Tree, which improves stats and Power Level and unlocks passive or active skills. Books of Knowledge found in the world grant a new melee or ranged Ability or upgrade an existing one. Abilities consume adrenaline.

Which Skill Tree path is best for a beginner?

The official guidance does not establish one universally best path or skill order. Choose skills that fit how you want to play, and remember that Ubisoft says skill focus can be reset without in-game currency.

How do I get new Abilities?

Look for Books of Knowledge in the world. A book can grant a new melee or ranged Ability or upgrade one you already have. Check what the book adds, and remember that Abilities use adrenaline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do I find weapons and armor?

Ubisoft’s beginner guidance says gear is found at specific locations. It also identifies legendary items, quest rewards, and merchants as sources. Do not rely on ordinary enemy looting as a steady source of new equipment; the official guidance does not name one best early weapon or provide a complete item-location list.

Should I build a particular settlement facility first?

No definitive first-building order is established in the cited official guidance. Settlement construction can open narrative arcs, missions, activities, bonuses, and mechanics, so review the options available to you and choose based on what sounds useful.

Do the editions include the same content everywhere?

Ubisoft Help lists Standard, Deluxe, Ragnarök, Complete, Collector, and Ubisoft+ Premium editions, and warns that content can vary by region. Check the listing for your platform and region rather than assuming the edition names guarantee identical inclusions. Platform compatibility and supported peripherals are platform-specific too.

The Bottom Line

For an uncomplicated start, use Synin, Odin Sight, and the compass for their distinct exploration jobs; find gear through locations, quests, legendary items, and merchants; and keep Skill Tree choices separate from Abilities found in Books of Knowledge. Skill focus can be reset without in-game currency, and settlement construction opens more of the game, so experiment and develop at your own pace instead of chasing an unsupported “best” build or upgrade order.
