If Snipping Tool freezes or crashes in Windows 10, try restarting the PC, then use the app’s Repair or Reset options if they’re available. If the app window is stuck, the Windows logo key + Shift + S shortcut may still open the capture overlay. These are low-risk troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed Snipping Tool-specific fixes.

1. Restart Windows and reopen Snipping Tool

Save any open work, restart the PC, and then launch Snipping Tool again. A restart is a sensible first check, but Microsoft’s restart guidance concerns problems installing, removing, or updating programs; it does not identify restarting as a proven fix for Snipping Tool crashes. Microsoft’s general restart guidance explains that distinction.

2. Try Repair in Windows Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
  2. Select Snipping Tool. If Advanced options appears, open it.
  3. Select Repair, if available, and check whether Snipping Tool responds afterward.

Windows does not show Repair or Advanced options for every app. Microsoft documents this path for Windows 10, but does not claim that Repair resolves every Snipping Tool crash. See Microsoft’s Repair and Reset instructions.

3. Use Reset if Repair is unavailable or doesn’t help

Return to the same Snipping Tool Advanced options page and choose Reset if Repair is missing or has not fixed the issue. Reset is the next app-level option in Microsoft’s guidance; it is not available for every app. The cited instructions do not specify which Snipping Tool preferences or data, if any, a reset preserves, so don’t assume all app-specific settings will remain unchanged.

4. Try the capture shortcut if the window is stuck

Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Microsoft says this opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay so you can select an area to capture. The snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window for editing, saving, or sharing. This can be a workaround when the main window is the obstacle, but it does not repair a fully unresponsive app. See Microsoft’s shortcut and capture instructions.

When the problem may be bigger than Snipping Tool

If Windows itself restarts unexpectedly or displays a stop code, treat that separately from an app-only crash. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can involve hardware, drivers, or software; that guidance does not establish any of those as the cause of a particular Snipping Tool problem. Microsoft’s unexpected-restart troubleshooting page covers system-level symptoms.

For an app-only issue, start with the less disruptive options rather than resetting Windows or reinstalling the operating system. Microsoft cautions that some Windows recovery options can cause data loss and recommends trying less disruptive recovery choices first. Read Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. This is important support context, but it does not show that end of support caused Snipping Tool to freeze or crash. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows app and support information.
