For smoother smartphone video with an Insta360 Flow, secure and center your phone in the magnetic clamp, select a gimbal mode that fits the movement, and walk slowly with bent knees. The gimbal stabilizes pan, tilt, and roll, but it cannot erase every footstep or bump. For subject tracking, use Deep Track in the Insta360 app and verify that your phone supports the features you plan to use.
The most reliable approach is to treat smooth footage as a combination of setup, camera movement, and suitable settings—not as something the gimbal can guarantee on its own. Check the mount before each take, choose a mode that suits the shot, and make a short test recording if you are unsure how the gimbal will respond.
Set up the phone and gimbal before recording
A secure mount is the starting point for stable footage. Follow Insta360’s Flow first-use guide for the exact mounting sequence: center the magnetic clamp on the phone, align the camera lens as shown, attach the clamp to the gimbal, then unfold the gimbal. A phone that is off-center or not firmly attached can undermine the shot before you start moving.
Do the mounting steps in order rather than unfolding first and trying to improvise the placement. The clamp is the connection between phone and gimbal, so make sure it is positioned and attached as the first-use instructions show. Aligning the phone’s camera lens as directed also helps you begin with the intended camera placement. If the phone or clamp does not seem to sit securely, stop and check the instructions and compatibility information instead of assuming the setup is fine because the phone appears to fit.

- Center and secure the phone. Fit the phone into the magnetic clamp, center the clamp on the phone, and align the lens as the first-use instructions show.
- Attach and unfold. Connect the clamp to the gimbal, then unfold the gimbal before shooting.
- Activate in the app when needed. If you want app functions such as Deep Track, connect and activate through the Insta360 app. Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and follow any firmware prompts presented in the app.
Compatibility is not just a matter of whether the phone fits in the clamp. Phone model and operating system can affect available controls and app features. The Flow family also varies by generation, so check the model-specific support information instead of assuming a feature works because it is available on another Flow device.
This check matters most when a shot depends on a particular control or tracking function. A phone may be physically mountable yet not support every app or camera feature you have in mind. Confirm the exact phone and gimbal combination before the shoot, especially if you plan to use Android-specific camera controls or rely on tracking outside the Insta360 app. Compatibility guidance is model-specific; do not treat one successful setup as proof that all Flow models and phones behave the same way.
Activation is a separate part of preparation from physically mounting the phone. If you only need the gimbal to stabilize a basic shot, the key steps are correct mounting, mode choice, and controlled movement. If you want to use an app-dependent feature such as Deep Track, allow time to connect through the app, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and respond to firmware prompts there. This avoids discovering during a planned take that the feature you expected to use requires setup first.
Walk to reduce footstep movement
Use a slow, deliberate walk with your knees bent—often called a “ninja walk”—when filming while moving. Insta360’s official tips recommend bending the knees and walking slowly for smoother footage. Keep your pace steady and avoid sudden starts, stops, or direction changes where possible.
Three-axis stabilization helps counter movement in pan, tilt, and roll, but it does not make walking technique irrelevant. A gimbal can reduce shake; it cannot guarantee that every footstep, bump, or abrupt movement disappears from the recording. For the smoothest result, combine stabilization with controlled movement rather than relying on the device alone.
Think of the gimbal as helping with the phone’s orientation while your body still determines how smoothly the whole rig travels. A slow pace and bent knees are useful because they make your movement more deliberate; they are not a promise that the image will be perfectly motionless. If the route includes a bump or you need to change direction quickly, the gimbal cannot make that movement disappear simply by being switched on. When possible, plan a path that lets you maintain an even pace and finish the shot without an abrupt stop.
Keep the intended movement simple. A slow walking shot, a deliberate horizontal pan, and a circling move each put different demands on your handling, so avoid combining several unplanned changes in one take. If a clip looks rough, review whether the movement was too fast or abrupt before assuming the gimbal has failed. The official guidance emphasizes careful walking as well as stabilization, and neither part should be treated as a substitute for the other.

Choose the gimbal mode for the shot
Flow’s modes determine how the phone responds when you move the handle. Pick a mode based on the movement you want, rather than leaving the gimbal to react in a way that fights your framing. Insta360 describes the available modes in its Flow Series gimbal modes guide.
| Mode | How it responds | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | Adapts its response to the shooting state. | General filming when you want the gimbal to choose an appropriate response. |
| Follow | Responds to vertical and horizontal handle movement. | Shots where the camera should follow your movement in both directions. |
| Pan Follow | Follows horizontal movement. | Horizontal pans or circling around a subject. |
| FPV | Follows movement on all three axes. | Creative shots where you intentionally want the phone to follow handle rotation. |
| Lock | Keeps the phone’s direction fixed. | Moving the handle while holding the phone’s direction steady. |
For a controlled horizontal sweep, Pan Follow is a natural choice; for movement that includes vertical and horizontal handle changes, use Follow. Choose FPV when rotation is part of the intended look, not when you want the phone to ignore rotation. Lock is useful when the direction should stay fixed as you reposition the handle. If you are unsure how a mode behaves, make a short test clip before recording the full take.
It helps to separate two questions: what movement are you making, and how should the phone respond to it? Pan Follow suits horizontal movement such as a sweep or circling around a subject. Follow is for movement that includes both vertical and horizontal handle movement. Auto adapts its response to the shooting state, making it an option for general filming when you do not want to choose a more specific behavior. FPV is not the “smoothest” choice for every shot: it follows handle movement on all three axes, so it is better reserved for a creative shot in which that response is intentional. Lock is the contrasting choice when you want the phone’s direction to remain fixed while you move the handle.
No single mode can be named the best for every scene from the available guidance. A mode that suits a horizontal pan may not suit a shot that needs the phone to follow vertical handle movement, and a mode that follows all three axes may not match a shot where the camera direction should stay fixed. Use the description of each mode to match behavior to the shot, then test it. A short test clip lets you check whether the response matches your framing before you commit to a longer recording.

A mode describes the gimbal’s response to handle movement; Deep Track is an app feature for following a chosen subject. You may need to consider both questions for a shot: whether the gimbal should respond to how you move the handle, and whether the app should help keep a selected person, animal, or object in the composition.
Use Deep Track when the subject should stay in frame
Deep Track uses the Insta360 app to track a selected person, animal, or object. It is distinct from choosing a gimbal mode: the mode controls how the gimbal responds to handle movement, while tracking helps keep a chosen subject in the composition. The official Deep Track guide describes selecting the subject in the app and also documents trigger and gesture options.
- Open the Insta360 app and connect to the gimbal.
- Select the person, animal, or object you want to follow, or use a supported trigger or gesture option described in the guide.
- Frame the subject clearly and begin recording while moving smoothly.
Insta360’s guide recommends that the subject occupy more than one-tenth of the frame and staying within five meters for the Flow models covered by that guidance. Treat these as manufacturer operating recommendations, not independently measured guarantees. Small, fast-moving subjects may blur, making tracking less reliable; give the subject more room in the frame and avoid excessive distance where possible.

The practical implication is to make the selected subject easy to recognize in the composition before asking the app to follow it. A person, animal, or object that occupies more than one-tenth of the frame meets the size guidance in the support guide; staying within five meters follows its distance recommendation for the models covered. These are operating recommendations, not a guarantee that a target will remain tracked in every situation. The guide also warns that motion blur can affect small, fast-moving targets, so those subjects may be less reliable to track.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If tracking is not behaving as expected, consider the conditions the guide highlights before changing everything else. Is the subject small in the frame? Is it moving quickly enough to blur? Are you beyond the recommended distance? Make the subject clearer and larger in the composition where practical, and avoid excessive distance. Tracking can help with framing, but it does not replace smooth handling; continue walking slowly and moving deliberately while the subject is followed.
Use Deep Track only when the shot benefits from following a chosen subject. For a scene where you want a fixed direction or a broad movement without a selected target, choosing an appropriate gimbal mode may be enough. Deep Track requires the Insta360 app, so plan around that requirement and verify phone compatibility rather than assuming the feature will be available through any camera app.
Check phone and model support before relying on a feature
Flow, Flow Pro, Flow 2, and Flow 2 Pro belong to different generations, and features vary by model and phone. Insta360’s product information says Flow Pro’s Apple DockKit native tracking is for iPhone and iOS use. Android users do not get those same native tracking features in the iPhone camera and third-party iOS apps; Insta360 app features may be available, subject to phone compatibility. Verify the precise model and feature in the compatibility information before planning a shoot around it.
When comparing Flow-family models, begin with the phone and operating system you actually intend to use. Then ask whether your workflow needs native tracking or tracking through the Insta360 app, which tracking features the model supports, and whether the included accessories suit your setup. The difference matters because an advertised feature is not automatically available on every phone or in every app. In particular, Flow Pro’s Apple DockKit native tracking is described as an iPhone and iOS feature. Android users should not expect those same native tracking features in the iPhone camera and third-party iOS apps; Insta360 app features may still be available, subject to compatibility.

The model name alone is not enough to establish whether your desired control or tracking feature will work. Check the model-specific compatibility list for the exact phone, model, and operating system, and verify the app or camera context in which you plan to shoot. If your workflow depends on tracking, distinguish native app tracking from Insta360-app tracking instead of treating them as interchangeable. This is more useful than choosing based on generation or release date alone, since the source material does not establish a best model or current best value.

These are dates listed by Insta360, not a ranking or a statement about which model is currently the best choice. For a specific shoot, compare phone and operating-system compatibility, whether you need native tracking or tracking through the Insta360 app, which tracking features the model supports, and whether its included accessories suit your setup. Current prices and a best-value model are not established here.
Those release dates provide a chronology, not a performance comparison. They do not establish that a newer model will be smoother for your particular shot, that every feature is available on every phone, or that one device is the best purchase today. The available product information supports comparing compatibility, tracking method and features, and included accessories; it does not provide current prices or a defensible best-value verdict. If you are deciding between models, use those concrete criteria and check the official specifications and compatibility list for the exact phone you plan to mount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the built-in support and replace only what you need
Flow documentation lists a built-in tripod and a 1/4-inch mounting point. You do not automatically need a separate tripod for a basic fixed-position setup; consider external support only when your particular placement requires it. If the magnetic phone clamp is missing or damaged, confirm that a replacement matches the precise Flow generation before buying or using it, since compatibility between replacement clamps is not established across models.
This is a practical distinction when planning accessories. The built-in tripod may cover a basic fixed-position use, while the 1/4-inch mounting point offers a mounting option when your setup calls for it. Neither detail means every location or positioning need is covered, so an external support may still be relevant for a specific arrangement. But there is no reason to add one automatically when the gimbal already documents a built-in tripod. Likewise, a replacement magnetic clamp is a conditional need for a missing or damaged part, not an upgrade every owner should assume they need. Confirm exact generation compatibility before relying on a replacement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A quick checklist for a smoother take
- The phone is compatible, securely clamped, and centered, with its lens aligned as instructed.
- You have chosen a mode that matches the intended movement.
- You are walking slowly with bent knees and keeping movements deliberate.
- If tracking, the subject is clearly framed, large enough to meet the manufacturer’s guidance, and not moving so quickly that blur interferes.
- You have confirmed phone-specific support for any app, camera, or tracking feature you need.
Before the full take, check the parts of the setup that are easy to overlook: the phone is centered in the clamp, the clamp and gimbal are attached as instructed, the selected mode suits the movement, and any app-dependent feature has been prepared. If you are using tracking, check subject size and distance against the manufacturer’s guidance. Then move at a measured pace with bent knees. These steps do not guarantee perfect footage, but they address the setup and handling factors the official guidance identifies.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get smoother footage with an Insta360 Flow?
Mount and center the phone securely in the magnetic clamp, choose a gimbal mode that suits the shot, and walk slowly with bent knees. Three-axis stabilization helps counter pan, tilt, and roll movement, but does not erase every footstep or bump.
Which Flow gimbal mode should I use?
Use Pan Follow for horizontal pans or circling, Follow for vertical and horizontal handle movement, Auto when you want the gimbal to adapt to the shooting state, FPV when you intentionally want it to follow movement on all three axes, and Lock when the phone direction should stay fixed. Test a short clip if you are unsure.

Does Deep Track work without the Insta360 app?
No. Deep Track requires the Insta360 app. The guide describes selecting a person, animal, or object in the app and also documents trigger and gesture options.
How large and how close should a tracked subject be?
Insta360’s guide recommends that the subject occupy more than one-tenth of the frame and staying within five meters for the Flow models covered by that guidance. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independently verified performance guarantees. Small, fast-moving subjects may blur and track less reliably.
Can I use Flow Pro native tracking with an Android phone?
The product information describes Flow Pro’s Apple DockKit native tracking as an iPhone and iOS feature. Android users do not get those same native tracking features in the iPhone camera and third-party iOS apps. Insta360 app features may be available, subject to phone compatibility; check the model-specific compatibility information.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need to buy a separate tripod for an Insta360 Flow?
Not automatically. Flow documentation lists a built-in tripod and a 1/4-inch mounting point. An external support is only relevant if a particular fixed-position setup calls for it.
Can I use a replacement magnetic clamp from another Flow model?
Do not assume replacement clamps are interchangeable. If the original is missing or damaged, confirm that the replacement matches the precise Flow generation; compatibility across models is not established here.
Which Flow-series model is the best value?
The available information does not establish current prices or a best-value model. Compare phone and operating-system compatibility, native versus Insta360-app tracking needs, supported tracking features, and included accessories, then check current model-specific information.
The Bottom Line
Smoother Insta360 Flow footage starts with a centered, secure phone mount and continues with a mode that matches the shot and a slow, bent-knee walking technique. Use Deep Track through the Insta360 app when you need to follow a subject, and verify phone and model compatibility before relying on a feature. Stabilization helps, but careful setup and movement still matter.
