First identify what is eating the plant: “worms” may be caterpillars or another pest, and the right response depends on the organism and whether it is in a vegetable garden, lawn, or tree. Check the affected plant, inspect leaves and stems for caterpillars, eggs, webbing, or frass, and ask your local County Extension office to help identify an uncertain pest.
Identify the pest before choosing a treatment
Different caterpillars and other organisms need different controls. Look on leaf undersides and around damaged stems, and note whether the damage is on an edible crop, turf, or a woody plant. Webbing can help point to tent caterpillars or webworms, but appearance and setting matter; do not assume every “worm” is the same pest. The National Pesticide Information Center’s caterpillar identification and management guidance is a starting point, and local Extension staff can help with identification.
Protect lettuce and other edible crops
Remove caterpillars and eggs by hand
Inspect plants regularly, including leaf undersides, and handpick caterpillars and eggs when practical. For a small garden, this is a direct way to remove pests without applying a pesticide.
Use row covers as prevention
Floating row covers or insect netting can keep egg-laying moths from reaching crops. Fit the cover at seeding or transplanting, before pests arrive. If caterpillars or eggs are already on the plants, remove them before covering; otherwise, the barrier may shelter pests along with the crop. Oregon State University Extension recommends handpicking, row covers, and Bt as options for the lettuce question in its May 15, 2013 Ask an Expert response.

Use Bt only for susceptible young caterpillars
Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Bt-kurstaki) works when young caterpillars eat treated foliage. It is not a general-purpose contact spray that kills immediately on contact. Choose only a product whose current label lists the crop and target pest, and follow all label directions. Bt can also affect non-pest caterpillars, so avoid treating plants used by desirable butterfly larvae. Oregon State Extension’s older lettuce response describes the available approaches for that question; product labels and local guidance should govern current use.
Do not rely on homemade detergent or baking-soda mixtures as caterpillar controls. Oregon State Extension advises stopping those treatments in its lettuce response.

Handle caterpillars in lawns differently
Armyworms, sod webworms, and other lawn pests are not managed exactly like caterpillars on vegetables. Identify the pest and assess both its population and the turf’s condition before treating. The University of Maryland Extension’s home-lawn guidance recommends cultural measures such as reducing thatch, turning off unnecessary outdoor lights that attract adult moths, and maintaining turf with appropriate watering. Protect natural predators where possible.
That guidance says treatment may be considered when early-instar caterpillars are present in high populations and other approaches have failed; later-stage caterpillars are harder to control. Do not apply a threshold from one lawn pest or location to another. Healthy turf may recover if its crown remains viable, so assess damage and turf condition rather than assuming every affected area needs an insecticide. Bt in treated turf can harm non-pest caterpillars as well.

Remove tent caterpillar webs from trees and shrubs
For tent caterpillars and similar web-forming pests, look for egg masses before they hatch. If appropriate for the plant, prune egg-bearing twigs or infested branches; where pruning is impractical, remove webs physically. Beneficial predators also contribute to natural control. Bt is most effective on young caterpillars and can affect desirable butterfly larvae as well as pests. Oregon State University Extension covers tent caterpillar identification and management in its webworm infestation guidance.
Protect vulnerable stems from cutworms
Cutworms may damage young plants at the stem. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends cardboard collars around vulnerable stems, removing nearby weeds, and checking plants at night with a flashlight to handpick cutworms when infestations are small. Bt-kurstaki can work on young cutworms that ingest it, but it may take a few days for them to die. See Virginia Tech’s Cutworms in the Home Garden for its guidance.

Choose the least disruptive option that fits the pest
- For edible crops: start with hand removal and prevention using a row cover installed before pests arrive.
- For young caterpillars: consider Bt-kurstaki only when the product label covers the crop or site and the target pest; caterpillars must eat treated foliage.
- For lawns: identify the species, monitor turf, and consider treatment only in the local context described by Extension guidance.
- For trees and shrubs: inspect for egg masses, prune or remove webs where practical, and account for beneficial predators.
A broad-spectrum pesticide may harm beneficial insects, and a product’s permitted uses vary. Match its current label to the plant, site, and pest rather than choosing a treatment solely because it says it kills caterpillars.
