To get rid of flies around a sink or compost bin, remove the material where they breed, scrub any drain or disposal biofilm, keep food-waste containers clean and covered, and use traps only to reduce the remaining adults. Hot water can flush loosened debris, but it does not replace physical cleaning. The process may take longer than one generation because fruit flies can develop from egg to adult in 8–10 days.
First identify the insect. Small tan or brown flies with red eyes are usually fruit flies attracted to fermenting food. Fuzzy, moth-like flies usually indicate drain flies breeding in gelatinous slime inside a drain or trap. Treating the wrong insect or relying on a drain chemical without removing the breeding material is why infestations often return.
Identify the fly before treating a drain
Correct identification determines where to look and which control step matters. Catch one on clear tape or photograph it against a light background before cleaning.
Common fruit flies
Common fruit flies are tiny tan or brown kitchen flies, often with red eyes. They gather around ripe or damaged produce, juice, beer, wine, recycling residue, trash and compost. Their eggs are laid on the surface of food or fermenting liquid. The larvae feed for 5–6 days, and the complete egg-to-adult life cycle takes 8–10 days, according to University of Maryland Extension (2024).

Drain flies
Drain flies are usually small, fuzzy, moth-like insects. Their larvae live in the gelatinous organic film that accumulates inside drains, traps and other constantly damp plumbing areas. University of Maryland Extension gives a development range of 7–28 days from egg to adult, depending on conditions.
| Clue | Fruit fly | Drain fly |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Tiny, tan or brown, commonly red-eyed | Fuzzy, moth-like and often grayish |
| Typical breeding material | Fermenting food or liquid on a surface | Gelatinous slime inside a drain or trap |
| Best first inspection | Produce, recycling, trash, compost and spills | Sink drains, disposal splash guards and traps |
| Primary control | Remove and clean all fermenting material | Physically scrub the organic film from plumbing |
Find the breeding site before trying to kill adults
Sanitation is the primary control for fruit flies, as University of Maryland Extension states. Removing flying adults without removing eggs and larvae only produces a temporary improvement.
Inspect the whole food-waste path
- Refrigerate or discard overripe, cut or damaged produce.
- Wipe up fruit juice, beer, wine, syrup and other fermented spills, including under appliances and along cabinet edges.
- Rinse bottles, cans and jars before placing them in recycling.
- Empty indoor garbage frequently, then wash and dry the can if residue remains.
- Check the underside of a garbage-disposal rubber splash guard and the flange around the drain.
- Empty countertop compost before scraps sit long enough to ferment.
- Dry mops, towels, sponges and other wet cleaning materials instead of leaving them damp near the sink.
Test a suspected drain overnight
Cover one suspect drain with plastic film or a food-storage bag before going to bed. If adult flies collect underneath by morning, that drain is a likely emergence site. Test drains separately when possible so you can identify the source rather than cleaning every fixture blindly. A negative result does not clear the kitchen: repeat the test on another drain and inspect the disposal, recycling, trash and compost.

A practical first-day workflow
- Confirm the insect. Compare its shape and color with the fruit-fly and drain-fly descriptions above.
- Remove obvious food sources. Discard or refrigerate ripe produce, clean fermenting spills, rinse recycling and empty trash.
- Inspect damp food-waste equipment. Examine the disposal, sink drain, recycling container, garbage can, compost caddy and hidden areas beneath appliances.
- Run the overnight drain test. Cover each likely drain separately with plastic film or a bag.
- Shut off disposal power before cleaning. Use the wall switch and disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the unit where applicable. Keep hands and tools away from moving blades.
- Remove buildup mechanically. Scrub the drain opening, splash guard, flange and reachable trap or pipe with a stiff drain brush or bottle brush. Lift out loosened residue.
- Flush the loosened material. Run hot water after brushing. If you choose an enzyme or foaming drain product, use it only as its label directs and never combine it with another cleaner.
- Set an adult trap. Place a commercial fruit-fly trap or a vinegar-and-soap trap near the sink while source cleaning continues.
- Reset food-waste routines. Keep compost covered, empty it frequently, and wash and dry containers.
- Recheck after several days. If activity continues, test a different drain and revisit the disposal, recycling, trash, compost and hidden spills.
Clean a sink drain where flies are breeding
Why scrubbing matters
A drain fly’s food is the wet organic film coating the inside of plumbing. Virginia Cooperative Extension says a thorough mechanical cleaning removes the accumulated material that attracts drain flies; thick buildup requires a stiff brush. Water alone may move loose particles while leaving the film attached.
How to scrub the accessible parts
- Remove the drain stopper or strainer if it can be taken out safely.
- Brush the drain opening and the underside of the stopper or strainer.
- Work a stiff drain brush or bottle brush as far into the reachable pipe as possible.
- If the trap is accessible and you know how to reseal it, clean the trap and its connections; otherwise leave disassembly to a plumber.
- Collect loosened sludge rather than allowing it to settle elsewhere in the plumbing.
- Flush with hot water to carry away the material you detached.
What hot or boiling water can and cannot do
Hot water is useful after brushing because it flushes loosened debris. A pour of boiling water may kill organisms directly contacted at the surface, but it cannot reliably penetrate an established film inside the drain or trap. It therefore is not a stand-alone treatment for a confirmed breeding site.
Use chemical products only as support
Foaming or enzyme drain cleaners may help break down remaining organic material after mechanical cleaning. Follow the product label, protect your skin and eyes as directed, and never mix products. Virginia Cooperative Extension does not recommend pouring bleach or vinegar down a drain for drain-fly control; these substances may affect only surface larvae and can damage pipes if improperly diluted. Never pour an insecticide into a drain.

Clean a garbage disposal safely
A disposal is a wet food system. Small amounts of fermenting residue can remain under the rubber splash guard or around the flange even when the grinding chamber appears clean.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Disconnect power. Turn off the switch, unplug the unit if possible, and switch off the circuit breaker before putting a brush or cloth near the opening.
- Lift and inspect the splash guard. Wipe or brush the underside where food particles collect. Do not force fingers into the opening.
- Scrub reachable surfaces. Use a stiff brush to clean the flange, the visible chamber and the underside of the guard.
- Remove residue. Wipe out loosened material rather than washing a thick mass farther into the plumbing.
- Flush thoroughly. Restore power only after tools and hands are clear, then run a generous flow of water as the disposal operates normally.
- Use an enzyme product only if appropriate. A commercial enzyme cleaner may be used when its label specifically permits disposal use. Do not improvise mixtures.
Check for a leak beneath the sink or at the disposal connections. Leaky drains and disposals keep the surrounding area damp and can attract flies; repair the leak rather than repeatedly treating the insects.
Stop flies in a countertop or outdoor compost bin
Countertop caddy
- Keep the caddy covered between emptying trips.
- Empty it frequently, especially after adding fruit, vegetables or other wet scraps.
- Do not leave scraps on the counter while waiting for the container.
- Wash the container and lid, then dry both completely before replacing the liner.
Outdoor compost
Compost bins are recognized fly breeding sites by the National Pesticide Information Center. Keep the bin covered and remove spoiled material that is attracting adults. Inspect the lid, rim and nearby ground for spilled scraps. The goal is to prevent exposed, fermenting food from remaining available while the compost is managed.

Garbage and recycling
Rinse containers before recycling, tie off food waste and empty indoor garbage often. Wash residue from the can or recycling tub and dry it before adding a new liner. A clean, dry container removes the film that otherwise supports eggs and larvae.
Use traps to reduce adult flies, not to cure the infestation
Homemade vinegar trap
- Pour a small amount of apple cider vinegar into a shallow cup.
- Add one drop of dish soap.
- Cover the cup with plastic wrap.
- Poke several small entry holes in the wrap.
- Place the trap near the sink or compost area, away from competing spills and produce.
The vinegar attracts adults and the soap changes the liquid’s surface so flies are less likely to escape. A commercial fruit-fly trap is another option. Traps remove adults that are already flying, while sanitation and scrubbing remove eggs and larvae. Keep the trap in place while the source is being corrected, and replace it according to its instructions.

How long should cleanup take?
Do not judge the treatment by the first few hours. Fruit-fly larvae feed for 5–6 days and the species can complete its life cycle in 8–10 days, according to University of Maryland Extension (2024). A female fruit fly can lay 100 or more eggs per day, a figure reported by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in 2018 and reviewed in 2025. That reproductive capacity explains why a small overlooked spill can replenish adults quickly.

Drain flies develop more slowly: University of Maryland Extension gives a 7–28-day egg-to-adult range. Continue source removal, cleaning and trapping long enough to outlast emerging adults. Seeing a few flies immediately after cleaning does not prove the treatment failed; seeing a steady stream after the relevant development period indicates that another source remains or that the original buildup was not fully removed.
Choose methods by what they actually accomplish
| Method | Removes breeding material? | Best use | Limitations and safety |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanitation and source removal | Yes, when all food or fermenting liquid is removed | Fruit flies around produce, recycling, trash and compost | Requires checking hidden spills and repeating inspections |
| Stiff drain or bottle brush | Yes; physically removes drain film | Confirmed drain-fly source and disposal buildup | Requires access and effort; do not reach into an energized disposal |
| Hot-water flush | Moves loosened debris | After brushing a drain or disposal | Does not penetrate established film or replace scrubbing |
| Enzyme or foaming drain cleaner | May help break down remaining organic material | Support after physical cleaning | Use only as labeled; never mix cleaners |
| Bleach or vinegar poured into a drain | Not a reliable removal method | Not recommended for drain-fly control by Virginia Cooperative Extension | May affect surface larvae and damage pipes if improperly diluted |
| Insecticide in a drain | No; it does not remove the food film | None | Never pour insecticide into plumbing |
| Vinegar-and-soap or commercial trap | No; catches adults only | Reducing flying adults while sources are cleaned | Cannot stop emergence by itself |
| Covered, frequently emptied compost caddy | Prevents new accessible breeding material | Countertop and outdoor food-waste management | Container still needs washing and complete drying |
Troubleshoot flies that remain after cleaning
The drain test is positive after one cleaning
Repeat the mechanical cleaning and extend the brush farther into the reachable pipe or trap. Look under the stopper, strainer and disposal splash guard. Thick film may require more than one pass; an enzyme or foaming product can support the work only after the residue has been physically disturbed.
The drain test is negative, but flies remain
Move the investigation to the disposal, recycling container, garbage can, compost caddy, floor drain, damp sponge, mop head and spaces beneath appliances. Check for a cracked bottle, forgotten produce bag or sticky spill that is fermenting out of sight. Test other drains one at a time rather than assuming the first sink is responsible.

Flies return after traps catch many adults
The trap is doing its limited job, but a source is still producing replacements. Recheck every food-waste container and inspect the disposal flange and splash guard. Continue sanitation through at least one 8–10-day fruit-fly life cycle; drain-fly sources may require attention for up to the 7–28-day development range.
There is a leak or inaccessible buildup
Repair a leaking disposal, drain connection or trap. Call a plumber when the source is inside inaccessible plumbing, a trap cannot be safely removed and resealed, wastewater backs up, or a sewer defect is suspected. A pest professional can help when careful source removal and plumbing inspection have not stopped activity.
Prevent a new infestation
- Store ripe produce in the refrigerator or discard it before it ferments.
- Rinse beverage and food containers immediately before recycling.
- Empty garbage and countertop compost frequently instead of waiting for odors.
- Keep compost lids closed and remove spoiled material.
- Wipe sink, counter and appliance areas dry after food preparation.
- Keep sponges, towels, mops and other wet cleaning materials dry between uses.
- Inspect and clean the disposal splash guard and drain opening as part of routine kitchen cleaning.
- Use a drain cover or stopper when a fixture is not in use if that is practical for the plumbing.
The durable fix is not a stronger trap or a larger dose of chemical. It is removal of the wet, fermenting or gelatinous material that supports the next generation, followed by enough monitoring to confirm that no hidden source remains.
