For most setups, the dependable way to hear PS5 audio on a Bluetooth speaker is to route the console’s HDMI sound through the TV, then let the TV send that sound to the speaker. If the TV cannot transmit audio over Bluetooth, a Bluetooth transmitter connected to the TV’s optical audio output is a documented alternative. The PS5 itself does not reliably pair with ordinary Bluetooth speakers for audio.

Why a Bluetooth speaker may not pair directly with a PS5

Bluetooth being available on a speaker does not mean the PS5 supports it as an audio output. PlayStation Support’s current PS5 Error Code CE-109531-9 page gives the message: “Your Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible with PlayStation®5 consoles.” PlayStation’s 2020 “PS5: The Ultimate FAQ” also said third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth were not supported. The error page is the more direct reference for the general incompatibility; neither source establishes a dependable direct-pairing method for ordinary Bluetooth speakers.

That limitation concerns the direct link between console and speaker. It does not prevent PS5 sound from reaching a Bluetooth speaker by way of another device. With the right equipment, the audio path is PS5 → TV → Bluetooth speaker, or PS5 → TV → optical Bluetooth transmitter → speaker.

Do not assume a generic USB Bluetooth dongle will solve the problem. The PlayStation guidance cited here does not validate arbitrary USB adapters for sending PS5 audio to Bluetooth speakers. Avoid buying one unless its manufacturer explicitly confirms that it works with the PS5 for this specific audio use.

Choose the audio route that fits your equipment

Route What it needs Best fit Key checks
TV’s Bluetooth audio output A TV that can transmit its audio to a Bluetooth speaker The simplest setup, when the TV supports it Confirm Bluetooth audio output—not merely Bluetooth connectivity—and check whether the TV can keep its own speakers active if that matters to you.
TV optical output plus Bluetooth transmitter A TV optical audio output, a transmitter with an optical input, USB power, and a compatible Bluetooth speaker A TV that cannot send its audio to Bluetooth directly Check the TV’s available audio format and follow the transmitter’s connection and pairing instructions. Sony’s documented setup uses PCM for the described transmitter route.
HDMI audio extractor plus Bluetooth transmitter, if needed An extractor with a suitable audio output, and possibly a separate Bluetooth transmitter A display without a usable audio output Verify the extractor’s video support for the PS5 and display, and confirm that its audio connector can feed the transmitter.

Which route works depends on the exact TV or monitor, transmitter, speaker, and audio settings. Bluetooth capability on a TV alone is not proof that it can transmit TV audio to a speaker. Sony’s TV support guidance says Bluetooth audio output support varies by TV model; consult the manual for the particular set and connection.

Choose in order of simplicity: first check whether the TV can output audio to Bluetooth; if not, see whether it has optical audio out; consider an HDMI extractor only if neither the TV nor monitor offers a suitable audio connection. This avoids buying an extra device that does not solve the actual gap in your signal path. A transmitter must accept the output available from the TV, and a Bluetooth speaker must be able to pair with that transmitter. One device’s compatibility does not guarantee the whole chain.

There is no universal price or performance comparison established for these routes. The required equipment varies: a TV with Bluetooth audio output may need no additional audio adapter, while an optical route requires a transmitter and an extractor-based route may require both an extractor and a separate transmitter. Compare the devices’ specifications and connector requirements before purchasing rather than assuming that the least expensive adapter will work.

Route 1: Send PS5 audio from the TV to the speaker

Use this option if the TV supports Bluetooth audio output. Keep the PS5 connected to the TV by HDMI as usual, then pair the speaker through the TV’s Bluetooth or audio-output controls. The exact menu names and pairing steps vary by television, so use the TV’s manual rather than looking for a universal PS5 Bluetooth-speaker menu.

  1. Connect the PS5 to the TV by HDMI and turn on the speaker.
  2. In the TV’s settings, find its Bluetooth device-pairing controls and pair the speaker. Make sure the setting is for audio output to a Bluetooth device, rather than Bluetooth input or accessory pairing only.
  3. Set the TV to output sound to the paired speaker. If you want TV speakers and Bluetooth sound at the same time, verify that the TV model supports simultaneous output; do not assume it does.
  4. On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select and configure the output path that matches the connected equipment. Available options depend on the devices and configuration.
  5. Play a game or other console audio and confirm that sound comes from the intended speaker. If it does not, check the TV’s selected audio output as well as the PS5 output settings.

This route avoids adding a separate transmitter, but the TV controls the Bluetooth connection. The PS5 settings do not turn an unsupported direct Bluetooth connection into a supported one.

Be precise about the TV’s Bluetooth feature when checking its manual or support page. A television may use Bluetooth for a remote control, keyboard, headphones, or other accessories without offering Bluetooth audio output from HDMI sources. Look specifically for instructions to send the TV’s program audio to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones. If the feature is described only as pairing an input accessory, it may not provide the route this setup needs.

Route 2: Connect an optical Bluetooth transmitter to the TV

If the TV cannot transmit audio to Bluetooth but has an optical digital audio output, a Bluetooth audio transmitter with an optical input can bridge the connection. Sony documents this type of arrangement for its WLA-NS7 transmitter: connect the TV’s optical output to the transmitter’s DIGITAL IN, power the transmitter through USB, and pair it with a Bluetooth device. That is a documented example, not a guarantee that every transmitter, television, and speaker will work together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the TV for an optical digital audio output and the transmitter for an optical digital audio input. The connector must match; an optical cable cannot connect to an analog audio jack.
  2. Connect the TV’s optical output to the transmitter’s DIGITAL IN with an optical cable.
  3. Power the transmitter over USB. For the WLA-NS7 setup, Sony says to use a commercially available USB AC adapter if the TV does not have a USB power output.
  4. Put the transmitter and Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode and pair them, following the device-specific instructions.
  5. For the optical-transmitter setup described in Sony’s TV support guidance, set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM. TV menu labels and available formats vary; follow the instructions for your TV and transmitter.
  6. Play PS5 audio and check that the TV is sending sound through optical and the transmitter is sending it to the paired speaker.

Before purchasing, confirm that the transmitter accepts the TV’s optical output, supports pairing with your speaker, and can use an audio format the TV can provide. Also check how the TV handles audio output when optical is selected. A transmitter’s Bluetooth connection does not establish a particular latency or guarantee that every combination will stay synchronized during gameplay.

Optical is a one-way audio connection in this setup: the TV sends the sound to the transmitter, and the transmitter handles the Bluetooth link to the speaker. The transmitter needs power as well as an optical signal, so check the power method and cable requirements rather than treating the optical cable as the only connection. Sony’s WLA-NS7 instructions describe USB power and recommend a commercially available USB AC adapter when the TV has no USB power output. Do not assume that any USB port will be present or convenient on every television.

PCM is a format requirement in Sony’s guidance for the described TV-and-transmitter arrangement, not a universal setting claim for every product. If there is no sound, confirm the TV’s digital audio output format against both the TV and transmitter instructions. A format mismatch can leave the physical connections intact while preventing the transmitter from receiving usable audio.

Route 3: Use an HDMI audio extractor only if the display has no suitable output

A monitor or TV without a usable audio output may require an HDMI audio extractor. It sits in the HDMI path and separates audio onto another connector, such as optical or analog. If that connector is not itself a Bluetooth transmitter, you will also need a compatible Bluetooth transmitter to send the extracted sound to the speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An HDMI extractor is a conditional workaround, not a universal PS5 accessory. Avantree Support describes an HDMI ARC extractor in certain AV receiver and transmitter configurations; that example does not establish compatibility across PS5, display, and extractor combinations. Before choosing one, check that it supports the PS5 video features you need, including the required resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and other HDMI capabilities. Confirm that its audio output matches the input on the Bluetooth transmitter. The sources cited here do not identify one extractor model suitable for every setup.

  1. List the video features you need to preserve from the PS5 to your display, including resolution, refresh rate, and HDR.
  2. Check the extractor’s specifications against those requirements and the display’s HDMI connection.
  3. Confirm that the extractor provides an audio connector the transmitter can accept. If it provides only analog or optical audio, choose a transmitter with the corresponding input.
  4. Connect and configure the extractor according to its manufacturer’s instructions, then pair the separate transmitter with the speaker.

If your display already has an optical audio output, the TV-optical-transmitter route is more direct. Adding an extractor where a suitable output already exists adds another compatibility point without making the PS5’s direct Bluetooth support different.

Before inserting an extractor, check its full video pass-through specifications, not just a headline resolution. The PS5 and display need to negotiate the video features you actually use, and the extractor sits between them. A model that supplies audio but does not preserve a required refresh rate or HDR capability may be a poor trade for your setup. Also distinguish an audio extractor from a Bluetooth transmitter: extracting sound creates an audio output, but does not by itself create a wireless Bluetooth connection unless the device explicitly includes that function.

Set the PS5 audio output for the connected path

PlayStation’s audio settings are at Settings > Sound > Audio Output. PlayStation says this area lets users choose an output device and configure the HDMI device type. Its examples include selecting an AV amplifier and setting the number of channels and speaker positions; what is available depends on the connected equipment and configuration.

Set the console for the audio route actually connected to it. If the PS5 is connected to a TV and the TV handles the Bluetooth connection, configure the PS5’s HDMI output as appropriate for the connected display and audio equipment. Then select the Bluetooth speaker or optical output on the TV, as appropriate. If you use an extractor, account for that device in the HDMI chain and follow its specifications.

These console settings configure the connected output; they do not add unsupported Bluetooth-speaker pairing. For the optical transmitter path, TV digital-audio settings matter too: Sony’s guidance for the described setup calls for PCM. Avoid selecting settings by guesswork if the TV or transmitter’s instructions specify a required format.

Keep the roles of the controls separate when troubleshooting: the PS5 controls its output over HDMI, while the TV selects whether to play that incoming sound through its Bluetooth audio output or send it over optical. The transmitter then pairs with the speaker. Changing a Bluetooth setting on the PS5 will not substitute for pairing the TV and speaker or the transmitter and speaker.

Troubleshoot by checking the signal path

Audio passes through several devices in these setups. Check each link in order, beginning at the source, rather than repeatedly trying to pair the speaker to the PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The speaker does not appear when pairing: Check that it is in pairing mode and that you are pairing it with the TV or transmitter—not relying on direct PS5 pairing. Follow the device’s own pairing instructions.
  • The speaker pairs but there is no sound: Confirm that the TV is set to the intended audio output and that the PS5 is sending audio over HDMI. For an optical route, check the optical cable connections, transmitter power, and TV’s digital-audio output setting.
  • The TV has Bluetooth but will not play through the speaker: Check the TV manual for Bluetooth audio output support. Bluetooth on a TV does not necessarily mean it can transmit its program audio to a speaker.
  • An optical transmitter is connected but remains silent: Verify that the TV has an optical output, the transmitter has an optical input, and the selected TV digital-audio format is supported. Sony’s guidance for its described optical-transmitter setup specifies PCM.
  • An extractor gives no sound or disrupts the picture: Check the HDMI connections and confirm that the extractor supports the video configuration required by the PS5 and display. Also verify that its audio connector matches the transmitter input.
  • Audio and picture do not seem synchronized: The cited official guidance does not provide measured latency figures or guarantee synchronization for arbitrary combinations. Check for relevant audio-delay controls in the TV or device manuals; if the delay remains unacceptable, this wireless route may not suit that setup.

When diagnosing an optical setup, follow the signal one connection at a time: confirm the PS5 is producing sound over HDMI, confirm the TV is routing that sound to optical, check the optical cable is connected at the TV output and transmitter input, confirm the transmitter has power, and then confirm it has paired with the speaker. This sequence helps isolate whether the issue is at the console, the TV’s output selection, the audio format, the transmitter, or the Bluetooth pairing.

Check compatibility before buying an adapter

Write down the make and model of the TV or monitor, speaker, and any transmitter or extractor you are considering. Use the manuals or manufacturer support pages to verify the complete route, not just one device’s Bluetooth feature.

  • Can the TV send its audio to Bluetooth, or does it have an optical digital audio output?
  • If using a transmitter, does it accept the TV’s output connector and audio format?
  • Does the speaker pair with that transmitter, rather than only with a phone or computer?
  • If using an HDMI extractor, will it pass through the PS5 video features you need, and does its audio output match the transmitter?
  • Can the TV keep its built-in speakers active alongside Bluetooth audio if you require both?

PlayStation Support’s “How to change audio settings on PS5 consoles,” “PS5 Error Code CE-109531-9,” and its 2020 “PS5: The Ultimate FAQ” cover console audio configuration and Bluetooth limitations. Sony’s WLA-NS7 Help Guide documents the optical, USB-power, and pairing sequence; Sony’s TV support guidance covers TV Bluetooth-audio variation and PCM for the described optical-transmitter setup. For extractor use, the cited Avantree Support page is an example of a particular AV receiver/transmitter arrangement, not a general PS5 compatibility list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect a Bluetooth speaker directly to a PS5?

Do not count on direct pairing with an ordinary Bluetooth speaker. PlayStation Support’s PS5 Error Code CE-109531-9 page says, “Your Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible with PlayStation®5 consoles.” Route the console’s HDMI audio through a TV that supports Bluetooth audio output, or use a compatible transmitter connected to the TV’s optical output.

Do I need a Bluetooth transmitter to use a Bluetooth speaker with PS5?

Not necessarily. If your TV can transmit its audio to Bluetooth speakers, pair the speaker with the TV and select it as the TV’s audio output. If the TV cannot do that but has optical digital audio out, an optical-input Bluetooth transmitter is a documented alternative. Check the specific TV, transmitter, and speaker manuals for compatibility.

Will any USB Bluetooth adapter work with a PS5?

There is no general guarantee that a USB Bluetooth dongle will send PS5 audio to a Bluetooth speaker. PlayStation’s cited guidance does not validate arbitrary USB adapters for this use. Buy one only if its manufacturer explicitly confirms PS5 support for Bluetooth-speaker audio.

Can I use an HDMI audio extractor by itself to connect a Bluetooth speaker?

Usually, an extractor separates audio from HDMI onto another connector, such as optical or analog; it does not necessarily transmit Bluetooth. You may need a separate Bluetooth transmitter with an input that matches the extractor’s audio output. Also verify that the extractor preserves the PS5 video features you need.

Will Bluetooth audio be perfectly synchronized with PS5 gameplay?

No latency figure or universal synchronization guarantee is established for arbitrary TV, transmitter, extractor, and speaker combinations. Check the device manuals for audio-delay controls and test the complete setup. If the delay remains noticeable, that wireless route may not suit your needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I hear the TV speakers and Bluetooth speaker at the same time?

That depends on the TV model and its audio-output behavior. Check the TV manual for simultaneous output support; pairing a Bluetooth speaker does not guarantee that the built-in speakers will remain active.

The Bottom Line

For PS5 audio through a Bluetooth speaker, first check whether the TV can send its HDMI audio to Bluetooth. If it cannot, a TV optical output plus a compatible Bluetooth transmitter is a documented route; use an HDMI audio extractor only when the display lacks a suitable audio output, and verify its video pass-through capabilities. The PS5 itself does not reliably pair directly with ordinary Bluetooth speakers.
