For a normal day visit to Chaco Culture National Historical Park, you need an entrance pass, not a timed-entry reservation. A private-vehicle pass costs $25 and is valid for seven days. Camping is separate: reserve a Gallo Campground site through Recreation.gov, generally up to three months before your arrival date. Weddings, memorials, organized events, collecting materials and some other activities require an advance special-use permit.

Access is currently unusual. The north road entrance is inaccessible because of storm damage, and the south road is the only entry route identified by the National Park Service (NPS) for the foreseeable future. Before leaving, check current NPS alerts, directions, road conditions, fees and operating hours.

What you need for your type of visit

Visit type Required arrangement Current cost or rule
Day sightseeing Entrance pass $25 per private vehicle for up to seven days; no timed-entry reservation is described by NPS
Motorcycle visit Motorcycle entrance pass $20 for seven days
Walk-in or bicycle entry Individual entrance pass $15 for seven days; children under 16 do not need an individual pass
Overnight camping Gallo Campground reservation plus entrance pass Individual sites $20 per night; eligible Senior and Access pass holders pay $10; group sites $60
Wedding, memorial, organized assembly, athletic event or resource collection Advance written special-use permit Contact the park permit coordinator for an activity-specific decision

The practical distinction is between admission, a campsite and authorization for a managed activity. These are separate transactions. Paying an entrance fee does not hold a campsite, and a campground confirmation does not authorize an event, commercial setup or collection activity.

How to buy the entrance pass

Choose the correct pass

The $25 private-vehicle pass covers the driver and passengers in one private, noncommercial vehicle and remains valid for seven days. A motorcycle pass costs $20 for seven days. Visitors arriving on foot or by bicycle pay $15 for seven days; children under 16 entering on foot or by bicycle do not need an individual pass. Passes are nontransferable.

Eligible Interagency passes, including Annual, Military, Senior, Every Kid in a Park and Access passes, are honored. Confirm that your pass category is valid and check the current NPS fee schedule before travel because rates and eligibility can change. If several people are traveling together in one private vehicle, the vehicle pass is generally the simplest option because it covers the occupants rather than charging each person separately.

Buy online or at the park

  1. Open the Chaco Culture National Historical Park listing on Recreation.gov and select the entrance-pass option.
  2. Pay online. NPS says online passes are available immediately and can be downloaded or printed.
  3. Print the pass when possible and place it on the vehicle windshield. A printed copy is particularly useful if the visitor center is closed.
  4. Alternatively, purchase the pass at the visitor center. Entrance-fee transactions are cashless, so bring a credit or debit card.

Keep the pass accessible during the seven-day validity period. It is tied to the qualifying visit and cannot be transferred to another visitor or vehicle. An entrance pass does not reserve a campsite, guarantee road access or authorize a special event. Those are separate arrangements.

How much admission and camping cost together

A private vehicle staying one night pays the $25 entrance fee plus the $20 individual campsite fee, for $45 before any other charges. An eligible Senior or Access pass holder pays the applicable entrance requirement plus $10 for an individual site. A group reserving one group site pays $60 per night for the site, in addition to the entrance passes required by the people arriving. These are planning examples using current posted rates, not a promise that prices or availability will remain unchanged.

How to reserve a Gallo Campground campsite

When reservations open

NPS campground guidance says reservations open three months before the date of stay. The fee page says campsite reservations must be made at least one day in advance. Because inventory and booking rules can change, use the live Recreation.gov listing for the exact dates, site types and cutoff shown when you book. A three-month opening window means that popular dates can become unavailable before a last-minute traveler checks.

Book an individual site

  1. Search Recreation.gov for Gallo Campground and enter your arrival and departure dates.
  2. Review the available individual sites and select one that fits your party and vehicles.
  3. Pay the campsite charge and save the confirmation. This charge is separate from your entrance pass.
  4. Arrive within the reservation window. If you have not arrived by the second day, NPS says the remainder of the reservation may be forfeited and released first-come, first-served.

Individual sites allow up to six people, two tents and two vehicles. Check-out is 11 a.m. Camping is limited to 30 days per calendar year and 14 consecutive days. These limits apply even when a traveler has several separate bookings; plan a longer road trip so that the Chaco stay does not exceed the stated limits.

When comparing sites, count people, tents and vehicles rather than assuming a large party can spread across an individual site. A party exceeding six people, two tents or two vehicles should investigate group-site availability instead of arriving and hoping the campground can accommodate an overage.

Book a group site

Gallo has two group sites, each accommodating 10 to 30 people. The rate is $60 per night, and group reservations must be made in advance. The group leader must check in at the visitor center before setting up camp. Build that check-in into the arrival plan: the group should not go directly to the site and set up first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Group sites are intended for tent camping and cannot accommodate RVs or pop-up trailers. A group stay may last no more than seven consecutive days. If a group includes people arriving in separate vehicles, coordinate the leader, arrival time and confirmation so that the required visitor-center check-in is completed before the party occupies the site.

What the campground provides—and lacks

  • Water and flush toilets are available.
  • There are no showers and no utility hookups.
  • The campground has no shade.
  • Sites include picnic tables and fire grates; most have tent pads.
  • Bring firewood or charcoal. Gathering wood is prohibited, and firewood is not sold in the park.

The lack of shade affects both tent placement and daytime comfort, so plan sun protection and water needs without assuming campground shelter. The absence of hookups also matters when deciding whether a vehicle or camping setup is suitable. Fire planning is straightforward but easy to overlook: obtain firewood or charcoal before entering the park because neither gathering wood nor buying firewood inside the park is an option.

Five campsites—20, 21, 23, 24 and 25—and the nearby trail to the cliff dwelling are permanently closed because of rockfall risk. NPS warns that rockfall is unpredictable and could cause severe injury or death. Do not select a closed site because it appears on an old map, and do not use the closed trail as a shortcut.

Can you camp without a reservation?

Possibly, but not reliably. Unreserved sites may be offered first-come, first-served when inventory remains. A reservation is the only practical way to secure a site for planned dates, especially for a group. Do not assume that a day-use entrance pass creates a camping entitlement. If you are driving the long south-road approach, arriving without a confirmed site creates a real risk of having to leave or alter the itinerary.

When a special-use permit is required

NPS requires an advance special-use permit for activities that benefit an individual, group or organization rather than the public at large when written authorization and management control are needed to protect park resources or the public interest. Examples include:

  • Weddings and memorial services
  • Special assemblies and First Amendment activities
  • Athletic events
  • Organized activities requiring management control
  • Collecting resource materials

Contact the park permit coordinator at 505-634-6961 and describe the date, location, attendance, equipment, vehicles and purpose. The coordinator determines which authorization, conditions and fees apply. Apply before making nonrefundable event commitments. A detailed first message helps the park determine whether the activity can occur, where it may occur and what management controls are needed.

The phrase “benefiting an individual, group or organization” does not mean every private visit needs a permit. Ordinary sightseeing, hiking and ordinary camping follow the entrance-pass and campground processes. The permit question arises when the activity is organized, impacts use of a place, involves a managed gathering or requires written authorization to protect resources and other visitors.

Photography, filming and audio recording

Filming, still photography or audio recording involving eight or fewer people generally does not require a permit or fee only when every stated condition is met:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The activity takes place in areas open to the public.
  • All equipment is hand-carried.
  • No site is used exclusively.
  • The activity does not adversely affect resources or other visitors.
  • It is not likely to create additional NPS administrative costs.

All five conditions matter. A crew of eight can still need authorization if it blocks a location, brings equipment that is not hand-carried, affects archaeological resources or requires NPS staff time. Conversely, a small, unobtrusive activity that meets every condition may fit the exception. Other park rules still apply, and an entrance or recreation fee may still be due.

A commercial or content-creation purpose by itself does not settle the question. Ask the permit coordinator about unusual sets, lighting, props, crew sizes, models or restricted locations. Explain whether the activity is for a wedding, a personal project, a business, a publication or another use, and describe exactly what will be carried into the park.

Camping and the word “permit”

The Superintendent’s Compendium separately states that camping requires a permit. For ordinary visitors, the NPS camping page describes the practical process as reserving a Gallo site, following campground rules and checking in as required. If an agency instruction or your itinerary raises a question about a separate camping permit, ask NPS before arrival and keep the response with your reservation details.

Check road access before you travel

An entrance pass or campground confirmation does not guarantee that every approach road is open. An NPS alert dated September 30, 2026 and updated October 3 says catastrophic storm damage made the north road entrance via County Road 7950 inaccessible. NPS identifies the south road as the only entry point for the foreseeable future.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The southern approach includes about 21 miles (34 km) of dirt road. NPS describes southern routes as ranging from very rough to impassable when wet and does not recommend them for RVs. Road conditions can change after rain or storms. Check the NPS alerts and directions immediately before departure, call the park if conditions are unclear, and do not rely on a map publisher or GPS alone: NPS warns that some suggested local roads are unsafe or private.

Vehicle choice is therefore part of reservation planning. A confirmed campsite is useful only if the vehicle can safely reach the open entrance under current conditions. If rain is forecast or a road alert changes, contact the park rather than assuming a navigation app has incorporated the closure.

Plan around hours and arrival rules

Period Park and archaeological-site hours Loop-road gate
May 1–October 31 7 a.m.–9 p.m. Closes 30 minutes before park closing
March 1–April 30 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Closes 30 minutes before park closing
November 1–February 28 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Closes 30 minutes before park closing

The visitor center is generally open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The park closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day; verify holiday hours and any campground closure before setting out. All visitors must leave the loop road, trails and archaeological sites by closing time. Visitor-center and campground bathrooms are listed as open 24 hours.

The gate schedule matters even for campers. In the May-through-October period, a 9 p.m. closing means the loop-road gate closes at 8:30 p.m.; in winter, a 5 p.m. closing means the gate closes at 4:30 p.m. Use the earlier gate time when calculating arrival, not the headline park-closing time. A late arrival can prevent entry despite a valid pass and campsite reservation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trails are self-guided. Backcountry hikers must sign in at the trailhead, so carry enough time, water and navigation supplies to return before the closing deadline. Self-guided does not mean visitors may remain after closing or bypass a sign-in requirement.

A practical booking checklist

  1. Decide whether you are visiting for the day, camping, or holding an organized activity. This determines whether you need only an entrance pass, a campsite reservation, or a special-use permit.
  2. Check the latest access alert. Confirm that the south-road approach is open and suitable for your vehicle; the north entrance is currently inaccessible.
  3. Check seasonal hours. Build in the loop-road gate’s 30-minute early closure.
  4. Buy the entrance pass. Use Recreation.gov or purchase at the visitor center with a credit or debit card.
  5. Reserve camping separately. Use Recreation.gov, compare individual and group inventory, and retain the confirmation.
  6. Contact the permit coordinator for special activities. Do this before advertising an event or paying vendors.
  7. Prepare for campground limits. Bring firewood or charcoal, observe occupancy and vehicle limits, and do not enter permanently closed sites or trails.
  8. Recheck conditions immediately before departure. Fees, availability, hours and storm-related road status are time-sensitive.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming a timed-entry reservation is required

The NPS materials currently describe an entrance pass for ordinary sightseeing, not a separate timed-entry reservation. You still must pay the entrance fee and comply with hours and access restrictions.

Confusing a campground reservation with park admission

A Gallo reservation covers a campsite only. Every visitor still needs the applicable entrance pass or an eligible Interagency pass.

Relying on first-come camping

Unreserved sites may exist, but availability is not guaranteed. Reserve in advance when dates matter, particularly for groups.

Driving the south road in unsuitable conditions

The 21-mile dirt approach can become impassable when wet and is not recommended for RVs. Delay the trip or obtain current guidance rather than assuming a confirmed reservation overrides road closures.

Arriving after the gate closes

The loop-road gate shuts 30 minutes before the posted park closing time. Schedule your approach accordingly; a late arrival can prevent access even while the park itself remains within listed hours.

Assuming a small camera crew is automatically exempt

The eight-or-fewer photography exception depends on all listed conditions. Hand-carried equipment, public access, no exclusive use, no resource or visitor impacts and no added administrative burden are all part of the exception.

Forgetting the group check-in

A group reservation is not permission to bypass the visitor center. The group leader must check in before setting up, so schedule arrival while the visitor center is generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and confirm any holiday-hours changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving firewood for the last minute

Wood gathering is prohibited and firewood is not sold in the park. Bring firewood or charcoal with you, along with the other supplies needed for an unshaded campground without showers or hookups.

Frequently overlooked planning details

Print or save every confirmation: the entrance pass, campground reservation and any written permit decision. A printed entrance pass is especially useful when the visitor center may be closed. Keep the campground confirmation available for the group leader and verify the number of nights against the 14-consecutive-day individual limit or seven-day group limit.

Use the actual entrance route shown in current NPS directions, not an old itinerary built around the north road. Because the south route contains 21 miles of dirt road, allow time for slow travel and avoid planning an arrival close to the gate deadline. Recheck alerts on the day of departure and again before committing to the final approach.

Bottom line for 2026 visitors

For ordinary sightseeing, buy the appropriate entrance pass; NPS does not currently describe a timed-entry reservation. Reserve Gallo Campground separately through Recreation.gov if you need to stay overnight, and select an individual or group site that matches your party, tents and vehicles. Contact the permit coordinator in advance for weddings, memorials, assemblies, athletic events, collecting materials or any managed production. Finally, treat access as changeable: the north entrance is inaccessible after storm damage, the south road is the only route NPS currently identifies, and the dirt approach may become impassable when wet.

Can I enter Chaco without a campground reservation?

Yes. A campground reservation is not required for day entry, but you still need the appropriate entrance pass. Camping without a reservation is possible only if an unreserved site is available first-come, first-served.

How far ahead can I reserve Gallo Campground?

NPS campground guidance says reservations open three months before the stay date. Check Recreation.gov for the live inventory and booking cutoff.

Is the road to Chaco open right now?

As of the NPS alert updated October 3, 2026, the north road entrance via County Road 7950 is inaccessible because of storm damage. NPS identifies the south road as the only entry route for the foreseeable future; check current alerts before driving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who do I contact about a wedding or special event permit?

Contact the Chaco park permit coordinator at 505-634-6961 with the activity details and requested dates.

What is the total cost for one vehicle camping one night?

At current posted rates, a private vehicle pays $25 for the seven-day entrance pass and an individual Gallo campsite costs $20 per night, or $45 combined before any other charges. Eligible Senior and Access pass holders pay $10 per individual campsite night, subject to current eligibility rules.

Can an RV use a Gallo group campsite?

No. NPS states that group sites are designed for tent camping and cannot accommodate RVs or pop-up trailers. The south approach is also not recommended for RVs.

What happens if I arrive late for my campsite?

NPS says that if a camper has not arrived by the second day of a reservation, the remaining reservation may be forfeited and released first-come, first-served. Contact the park or follow current Recreation.gov instructions if your arrival plan changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are showers or hookups available at Gallo Campground?

No. The campground has water and flush toilets but no showers or utility hookups, and it has no shade.

Can I bring firewood from outside the park?

Bring firewood or charcoal with you. Gathering wood is prohibited, and firewood is not sold in the park.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy an entrance pass for a day visit, reserve Gallo Campground separately for overnight stays, and contact the permit coordinator before any organized or managed activity. Check NPS alerts immediately before travel because the north entrance is inaccessible and the south dirt road can become impassable when wet.
