To give a player operator status, run op PlayerName in the server console, replacing PlayerName with the player’s exact Minecraft name. In chat, the equivalent is /op PlayerName, but only a sender who already has sufficient permission can run it. You must own the server, control its console, or have an authorized administrator perform the change; a regular player cannot legitimately OP themselves on somebody else’s server.
What OP means in Minecraft
OP is short for operator. It is an administrative status that allows a player to use privileged server commands. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference describes /op as “Grants operator status to a player,” while Minecraft’s official command guide defines /op <playername> as making a player an operator of a server.

OP is not a cosmetic role and it is not a setting that an ordinary player can turn on from their own account. The server must accept the command from an authorized source. That source is normally the dedicated-server console, or an in-game command sender that already has the required permission level.
Before you run the command
- Confirm authority: You need server-console access, ownership of the world, or administrator permission. If the server belongs to someone else, ask its owner or staff member.
- Identify the edition: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use the same core
opidea, but the available settings and console workflows differ. - Copy the exact player name: Replace
PlayerNamewith the target account’s exact Minecraft name. Avoid adding a nickname, display label, or extra spaces. - Choose the correct access point: A dedicated-server console is the usual route. Local Java and Bedrock worlds use their world settings, and in-game chat works only when the sender is already allowed to issue administrative commands.

How to OP someone from a Java Edition dedicated-server console
The console is the normal administrator workflow for a Java dedicated server. You do not need to put a slash before the command when entering it in the console.

- Open the server console. Use the console window or control panel that starts and displays your Java server. If you cannot access that console, you need the owner or hosting administrator to perform the change.
- Enter the command:
op PlayerName. Substitute the target player’s exact Minecraft name. For example, if the account is namedAlexExample, enterop AlexExample. - Submit the command. Press Enter. The server should process the command and grant the target operator status.
- Have the player reconnect if necessary. The status is assigned by the server. Reconnecting can refresh the player’s command permissions in clients or server setups that do not immediately reflect the change.
If an administrator is already in the game rather than at the console, the same operation can be entered as /op PlayerName in chat. The in-game sender must already have sufficient permission; the command does not bypass the server’s permission checks.
How to OP someone on Bedrock Dedicated Server
Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation explicitly supports op <playername> as a console command. The procedure is nearly identical to Java, but Bedrock also documents the target argument as <player: target>, which can be a player name or an appropriate target selector in command contexts that support one.
- Open the Bedrock Dedicated Server console. Use the terminal or management panel connected to that server.
- Enter:
op PlayerName. Use the exact account name, or the documented target form supported by your server. - Press Enter and watch the console response. A successful command grants operator status to the selected player.
- Test the result in game. The player can try an administrative command that their newly granted permission should allow. Do not use a destructive command merely as a test.
Bedrock’s command reference lists the /op command with permission level Admin and says that cheats are not required for the command itself. That does not remove the requirement for an authorized command sender: a normal player still cannot grant themselves OP on a server they do not control.
Removing OP on Bedrock Dedicated Server
To revoke operator status from a Bedrock player, run deop PlayerName in the Bedrock Dedicated Server console. Replace the name with the same exact account identifier used when granting access. The command removes the operator privilege; it does not delete the player or change unrelated permissions.
Using OP from in-game chat
Chat is an alternative access point, not a workaround for missing authority. Type:

/op PlayerNameThe leading slash is the normal in-game command format. The sender must already have a high-enough permission level to run administrative commands. On a dedicated server, this generally means an existing operator or another administrator whose permission system allows the command.

Asking another player to type the command does not help unless that player already has the required permission.
Getting command access in a Java single-player or LAN world
A Java single-player world is not managed like a remote dedicated server. Minecraft’s official guidance places the control in the world’s settings:
- Open the world’s World Options.
- Enable Allow Commands.
- Enter the command you need in the world, using the normal in-game slash format.
When a Java world is opened to LAN, the host controls whether commands are available to the local session. A person joining someone else’s LAN world does not gain administrative authority simply by joining; the host must provide the appropriate access.
This local-world setting is different from promoting a player on a remote server. There is no external server console in the single-player case, and the host’s world settings determine whether command use is available.

Getting command access in a Bedrock world
Bedrock uses the Allow Cheats option in the world’s Game settings. Enable it when you control the world and need commands there. The significant trade-off is permanent: Minecraft states that enabling cheats permanently prevents achievements in that world, even if you later disable cheats.
- Open the Bedrock world’s Game settings.
- Turn on Allow Cheats.
- Confirm the warning and return to the world.
- Use the required command in chat, with the slash prefix.
Do not enable cheats in a survival world where achievements matter unless you accept that the world will no longer award them. This setting concerns the local Bedrock world; it is not the same as changing an individual’s status on a Bedrock Dedicated Server.
Java and Bedrock: what actually differs

Understanding Bedrock’s default-player-permission-level
Bedrock Dedicated Server includes the default-player-permission-level property in server.properties. Its allowed values are:
visitormemberoperator
The setting controls the permission level assigned to new players joining for the first time. It is therefore a default for initial joins, not a universal promotion switch. Changing it does not replace the individual command op PlayerName when you need to grant an existing player operator status.
Use the property when you deliberately want a server-wide first-join policy. Use the console command when the decision concerns one named player. Treat the operator value carefully: it can give every first-time joiner administrative power, which is a much broader change than OPing one trusted account.

Why the OP command may fail
The command was entered in the wrong place
A console command and an in-game command are similar but not identical in presentation. In a dedicated-server console, enter op PlayerName without the slash. In chat, enter /op PlayerName. If you are using a hosting control panel, make sure its input box is the live server console rather than a chat, log filter, or configuration editor.
The sender lacks permission
The command cannot be used to elevate an ordinary player. Have the server owner or an existing authorized administrator run it from the console, or grant your account the appropriate authority through the server’s established administration process.

The player name is wrong
Check every character in the account name and remove accidental spaces. Use the player’s actual Minecraft name rather than a nickname shown by a plugin, scoreboard, or chat formatting system. On Bedrock, the documented target argument may also accept a supported target selector, but a precise player name is the simplest option for one account.
You used the wrong edition’s settings
Java local worlds use Allow Commands; Bedrock local worlds use Allow Cheats. A Bedrock Dedicated Server uses its console and can also contain server.properties. Enabling a setting in one edition does not change permissions in a different server or world.
The default permission property did not affect an existing player
That behavior is expected. Bedrock’s default-player-permission-level concerns first-time joins. For an account that has already joined, use the individual console command op PlayerName.

The player still cannot use a command after being OPed
First verify that the command completed successfully in the console and that the name matched the intended account. Have the player reconnect, then test a non-destructive command. If the server uses an additional permissions system, inspect that system separately; OP status and plugin-specific roles are not necessarily the same thing.

Operator status unlocks privileged server commands, so grant it only to accounts that genuinely need administrative control. For a single trusted administrator, an individual op PlayerName change is narrower than setting Bedrock’s default permission to operator for every first-time player.
- Use the exact account name and verify the console response.
- Prefer the server console when you are administering a dedicated server, because it makes the authority path clear.
- Do not treat OP as a normal gameplay setting or promise it to players who do not control the server.
- When testing a new permission, choose a harmless command rather than one that changes, deletes, or exposes world data.
- On Bedrock local worlds, consider the permanent achievement consequence before enabling cheats.
What to do if you do not own the server
There is no legitimate player-side command that grants OP on another person’s server. Contact the owner, hosting administrator, or staff member and explain why you need the privilege. They can decide whether to run op PlayerName, assign a narrower role, or decline the request.
Websites, clients, or “OP hacks” that claim to bypass the server’s permission system are not part of Minecraft’s documented administration workflow. The supported route is an authorized command sender with console access or an existing administrator permission.
