The most reliable way to receive NJ TRANSIT delay and schedule-change notifications is to create a My Transit Alerts profile for the trips, routes, or stations you use. You can receive personalized push notifications in the NJ TRANSIT Mobile App, or choose email and mobile text through your My Transit account. For an immediate, one-time check, use the Travel Alerts and Advisories pages, the app’s System Status view, line-specific feeds, or station departure displays.
Set up alerts before your next trip, enable notifications on your phone, and select the exact rail journey, bus route, or light rail line you want monitored. The instructions below cover setup, alert coverage, alternatives, and troubleshooting.
What NJ TRANSIT My Transit Alerts are
My Transit Alerts is NJ TRANSIT’s personalized notification service. Instead of checking the entire network, you register a trip or service you care about and receive messages that affect that selection. The service can monitor rail, bus, and light rail travel, with delivery through the mobile app, email, mobile text, or a combination of the available options.
NJ TRANSIT identifies the mobile app as the best way for customers to receive alerts because push notifications can be tied directly to saved trips and favorites. Email and text are useful if you prefer notifications in an inbox or through SMS rather than an app.

What the service can monitor
- Rail journeys, including the stations and travel times you enter.
- Bus routes and the trips or stops associated with them.
- Light rail lines and selected travel information.
- Station conditions at the origin and destination you specify.
- Schedule changes, service adjustments, and announcements that affect the registered trip.
Choose the right alert channel
Use the channel that matches how you normally check your phone and how much detail you need. You can also combine a personalized channel with a public status page for a second check during major disruptions.

Set up push notifications in the NJ TRANSIT app
The exact wording of app menus can change as NJ TRANSIT releases updates. If a label differs slightly, use the current prompt that leads to My Transit Alerts or saved trips.
Start a new alert profile
- Install or open the official NJ TRANSIT Mobile App.
- Open Rider Tools.
- Select My Transit Alerts.
- Choose Add New Alerts.
- Select the service type: Rail, Bus, or Light Rail.
- Enter the stations, route, line, or trip the app should monitor.
- Save the alert and repeat the process for another trip if necessary.
- When the phone asks for permission, allow notifications from NJ TRANSIT. If you previously denied permission, turn it on in the phone’s notification settings.
Configure a rail trip
Rail setup requires more than selecting a line. Enter the departure information and the stations that define the journey. NJ TRANSIT’s setup guidance also asks riders to include the departure and return times when they want both legs monitored. Add a separate alert for a recurring return trip if the app presents that as a separate option.

Select Bus, choose the route, and then identify the trip or stops that matter to you. Check the displayed route information before saving so that a similarly numbered route or direction is not selected by mistake.
Configure a light rail line
Select Light Rail and choose the relevant line and travel details. Save the selection, then confirm that it appears under My Transit Alerts or your saved trips.
Verify that push delivery is actually enabled
There are two separate controls: the alert must be saved inside the NJ TRANSIT app, and the operating system must permit the app to notify you. Check both. On a phone with notification summaries, focus modes, battery restrictions, or similar controls, make sure NJ TRANSIT is not being silenced or delayed.
Set up email or mobile text alerts
Email and text are configured through the My Transit signup or account page rather than only through the app’s push-notification permission.

Account setup steps
- Open NJ TRANSIT’s My Transit signup or account area.
- Enter the requested account and contact details.
- Choose email, mobile text, or both when those choices are offered.
- Select the notification categories you want.
- Add the rail trip, bus route, light rail service, or station information to monitor.
- Save the profile and follow any confirmation instruction shown for the chosen contact method.
Email categories
The signup screen lists these email categories: Travel Alerts, Station Advisories, Service Advisories, and Customer Notices. Select only the categories that help you; choosing every category can produce messages that are broader than a single commute.
Mobile text coverage
The signup screen lists Travel Alerts for mobile text. Text delivery can incur standard carrier message and data rates, depending on your mobile plan. If your carrier blocks short-code or automated messages, email or app push may be more dependable.
What a My Transit alert includes
NJ TRANSIT describes My Transit Alerts as covering disruptions that affect the trip you registered, rather than every event anywhere in the system.
Delay threshold
The current My Transit service description says trip-impacting delay alerts cover delays of 15 minutes or more. That is a notification threshold, not a promise that every minor variation will generate a message. A shorter delay may not produce the same alert even though the displayed departure time changes.
Schedule and service changes
Alerts can also report schedule changes and other service adjustments affecting the selected trip. These notices may involve a timetable change, a modified service pattern, or another operating change that is not simply a late departure.
Station advisories
Station advisories can apply to the origin or destination in your profile. Examples identified by NJ TRANSIT include elevator or escalator outages and boarding changes. These notices matter even when trains or buses are running on time because they can change how you enter, exit, or board.
Other announcements
Customer-facing announcements may be sent when they affect the trip or service you selected. Read the full message rather than relying only on the subject line; an advisory can explain an alternate boarding location, a changed stop, or a continuing condition.

How often the service operates
The current My Transit overview says the service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. An older NJ TRANSIT “In The Know” page describes weekday-only delay hours, so do not use that older wording as the current general schedule. The current My Transit overview is the better reference for present availability, while individual notices still depend on the service and trip you registered.

Manage, change, or remove saved alerts
Open My Transit Alerts in the app or your My Transit account to review the trips you have saved. The official app FAQ describes managing saved or favorite trips from My Transit Alerts and also allows alert setup from trip-status views.
When your commute changes
- Edit the departure or return time when your work or school schedule changes.
- Replace an old station or route instead of leaving several obsolete alerts active.
- Create separate entries for different weekday and weekend patterns if the app asks for distinct times.
- Review saved alerts after an app update because menu locations and labels can change.
When you want a temporary check
For a one-time trip, you can use Travel Alerts and Advisories or System Status without building a permanent alert profile. If you do save a temporary trip, remove it afterward so future notices remain relevant.
Check service immediately without waiting for a notification
Personalized alerts are not the only way to find out what is happening right now. Use these public checks when you are about to leave, already at a station, or investigating a disruption that may affect several lines.
Travel Alerts and Advisories
NJ TRANSIT publishes public Travel Alerts and Advisories on its website and in the app. These pages are broader than a saved trip and are useful when you have not subscribed, when you are comparing alternate routes, or when a major event affects multiple services.
System Status
The app’s System Status view gives a wider network perspective. It can reveal that a delay is part of a larger condition rather than an isolated trip issue. Use it alongside your saved alert, not as a replacement for selecting the exact trip details you need.
Line-specific automated X feeds
NJ TRANSIT identifies automated X feeds organized around particular lines or services. These feeds are direct-check channels: you must open or follow the relevant feed, and they are not the same as a My Transit push, email, or text subscription.

Station DEPARTUREVISION
At the station, DEPARTUREVISION displays provide arrival and departure information and can show special messaging during disruptions. Check the platform or concourse display when the alert you received does not explain a local boarding change.
Do not confuse Arrival Alerts with delay alerts
Arrival Alerts are designed to tell you when a train is nearing and reaching a destination. They can help prevent a missed stop, but they are not a substitute for My Transit service alerts. A rider who needs delay and schedule-change information should configure My Transit Alerts separately, even if Arrival Alerts are already enabled.

Cost, devices, and data use
NJ TRANSIT describes My Transit as free. You do not need to buy a special device or accessory to subscribe. App push requires a compatible smartphone with notifications enabled; email requires an accessible email account; and mobile text requires a phone number that can receive SMS.
Carrier message and data rates may apply to mobile text. Normal mobile-data charges may also apply when the app connects over a cellular network, depending on your plan. These are carrier charges, not a separate NJ TRANSIT subscription fee.

No push notification arrived
- Open My Transit Alerts and confirm that the trip is still saved.
- Check the phone’s notification permission for NJ TRANSIT.
- Disable any focus, do-not-disturb, notification-summary, or battery setting that is suppressing the app.
- Open the app manually and check Travel Alerts or System Status for the latest information.
- Confirm that the phone has an internet connection; push delivery cannot arrive while the device is offline.
The alert concerns the wrong trip
Review the selected stations, route, direction, departure time, and return time. Edit the entry or delete it and use Add New Alerts to create a clean selection. Similar station names and routes can make an incorrect choice look plausible until a notice arrives.
You are receiving too many unrelated messages
Remove obsolete saved trips and narrow the notification categories in your My Transit account. Email categories such as Customer Notices and Service Advisories can be broader than a single delay message, so keep only the categories useful for your purpose.
A station problem was not obvious from the delay message
Open the full advisory and check the station information. Elevator, escalator, or boarding changes may be listed as station advisories rather than as a train-delay headline. If you are already at the station, compare the message with DEPARTUREVISION signage.

Text messages are not arriving
Confirm that the mobile number is correct, that Travel Alerts is selected for mobile text, and that your carrier permits automated messages. Use app push or email as a backup while you resolve the SMS problem. Carrier message and data rates may apply even when delivery is intermittent.
The app menu does not match these steps
NJ TRANSIT can change labels and navigation in later app versions. Look for Rider Tools, My Transit Alerts, saved trips, or an equivalent alert option, and follow the current in-app prompts. The underlying choices remain the same: select Rail, Bus, or Light Rail, identify the trip or route, save it, and allow notifications.
A practical routine for a disruption-sensitive trip
- Before leaving, open the app and check your saved trip’s latest status.
- Review Travel Alerts and Advisories for broader conditions or alternate-route information.
- At the station, read DEPARTUREVISION and any posted special message.
- If a notice indicates a service change, read the complete advisory for station, boarding, or schedule details.
- For a network-wide problem, use System Status and the relevant line feed to see whether your trip is part of a larger disruption.
- After the journey, remove temporary alerts or update times so the next notification remains relevant.
Which setup is best for common situations?
Daily commuter
Use app push for the regular rail, bus, or light rail trip and add the return time when you want both directions monitored. Keep email enabled if you need a written record of advisories.

Occasional rider
Use Travel Alerts and Advisories immediately before the trip. Create a temporary My Transit alert only when the journey is important enough to justify a personalized notification.
Rider without reliable app access
Use My Transit email or mobile text and check the public advisories page when you need a current system-wide view. Remember that the signup screen lists more email categories than mobile-text categories.
Rider changing routes during a disruption
Keep the original personalized alert active, then consult System Status, Travel Alerts and Advisories, and the relevant line feed before choosing an alternative. A broad status message can reveal conditions that a single-trip notice does not describe.
