Find and remove the moisture source before trying to deodorize. Check carpets, footwells, seat seams, storage areas and the headliner for dampness or trapped debris; dry wet materials with a wet/dry vacuum; and inspect the cabin air filter if the odor appears when the heater or air conditioner runs. If dampness returns, the source is unclear, or the smell persists after drying, have a mechanic diagnose the vehicle before your trip.
What a musty car smell usually means
A musty, mildew-like odor is commonly a clue that moisture remained somewhere in the cabin instead of drying completely. The smell may come from wet carpet, upholstery, a spill, trapped debris or water entering through a leak. Cleaning the visible surface or spraying a deodorizer can make the odor less noticeable while leaving the damp material—and possibly the leak—in place.
The first objective is therefore diagnosis, not fragrance. Your AAA Network’s 2024 guidance on removing car smells recommends looking for dampness and physical sources throughout the interior, then removing moisture. Its article is available at “How to Get Rid of Smells in Your Car”. A wet/dry vacuum can help extract moisture from wet carpet or upholstery, but it cannot repair the reason the area became wet.

Before you start: a safe, useful inspection
Choose a dry place and allow enough time
Park where you can open the doors and lift the mats without creating another water problem. A dry day makes it easier to tell whether carpet is genuinely damp and gives wet materials a chance to air out. Remove loose belongings so they do not hide a wet patch or retain the odor.
Use your senses without relying on smell alone
Walk around the vehicle and note when the odor is strongest. Is it present with the doors closed, or does it become obvious only after the fan, heater or air conditioner starts? Press a clean hand or cloth onto suspicious carpet and upholstery to check for moisture. Look for discoloration, water marks, wrinkled carpet, damp padding or debris. Do not assume that a dry surface means the layers underneath are dry.
Do not confuse masking with removal
Air fresheners and fragranced cleaners can cover an odor temporarily. They do not establish that the interior is dry or that a leak has stopped. Treat any deodorizer as a finishing step only after you have investigated and corrected the source.

Step-by-step: locate the source before deodorizing
- Remove every floor mat. Inspect both sides of each mat and the carpet underneath. Feel the front and rear footwells, including the area beneath the pedals and the rear-seat footwells. Compare one side of the cabin with the other; a single damp area is a useful clue.
- Check under the seats. Slide the front seats through their adjustment range and look beneath them. Inspect the carpet edges, seat rails and the space where objects may have collected. Rear seats can conceal damp carpet, so check their footwells and the area immediately in front of and behind the seat base.
- Open seat seams and folds. Run your hand along creases, bolsters and the junction between the seat cushion and backrest. A spill or wet item can remain in a seam even when the broad surface feels dry.
- Inspect storage areas. Empty the glove compartment, door pockets, center console and cargo area. Check the spare-tire well and any under-floor storage in the trunk or hatch. Look for wet items, spilled liquids, leaves and other debris that can retain moisture.
- Examine the headliner and upper trim. Look for damp spots or water marks on the ceiling, around the doors, near the windshield and around the rear hatch or trunk opening. A wet headliner points to a different investigation from a single carpet spill, so record where you found it.
- Check the door and hatch areas. Inspect the carpet beside each door, the door-pocket area and the seals around the trunk or hatch. If one location is repeatedly wet after rain or washing, note it rather than simply drying it and moving on.
- Smell-test the climate control deliberately. With the vehicle stationary and ventilated, run the fan, then the heater and air conditioner according to the vehicle’s normal controls. Notice whether the odor begins only when air flows from the vents. A climate-linked smell makes the cabin filter an important next check, but it does not rule out wet carpet or another source.
Keep a simple note of the location, wetness and operating condition that produced the odor. This prevents you from repeatedly cleaning the wrong area and gives a mechanic useful information if the problem returns.
Two diagnostic patterns to compare

These patterns are practical starting points, not an exhaustive or mutually exclusive diagnosis. A vehicle can have both a damp interior and a contaminated filter.
Remove the moisture and dry the interior
Take out removable wet items first
Remove floor mats, cargo liners and any washable object that is holding water. Place them where they can dry completely. If a removable item is the obvious source, do not return it to the cabin while it is still damp; doing so can reintroduce the odor to otherwise dry carpet.

Use a wet/dry vacuum on wet carpet or upholstery
AAA’s car-odor guidance recommends a wet/dry vacuum when an area is still wet. Make several slow passes over the affected carpet or upholstery and empty the vacuum as needed. Concentrate on seams, edges and low points where water collects. Extraction reduces the moisture load, but it is not a substitute for finding the entry point or spill.

Avoid saturating a previously dry area with additional liquid when the original problem is unexplained moisture. If padding beneath the carpet is wet, surface passes may not remove everything; persistent dampness is a reason to stop DIY deodorizing and arrange diagnosis.
Ventilate without creating another problem
Leave doors or windows open only where weather and security permit. Give the carpet, seats and storage wells time to dry before reinstalling mats and closing the vehicle for the night. Check the same areas again later rather than judging dryness immediately after vacuuming. A dry-to-the-touch surface that becomes damp again indicates that the source remains active.
Remove the physical source you found
Pick out leaves, wet clothing, food, spilled liquids and other debris. Dispose of contaminated disposable material and clean reusable items according to their material instructions. The key test is not whether the cabin smells better for an hour; it is whether the material is clean, dry and no longer being exposed to moisture.
Investigate leaks instead of repeatedly drying them
Repeated dampness is evidence that drying alone has not solved the problem. Water may be entering at a door, hatch, window or another body opening, but the reviewed AAA guidance does not establish a vehicle-specific leak-testing procedure. Do not guess at a repair or disassemble trim without the vehicle’s service information.
Record when you notice the water: after rain, a car wash, use of the air conditioner, or no identifiable event. Note which footwell or storage area is affected and whether the headliner or trim shows marks. This information helps a mechanic reproduce the condition. AAA advises seeing a mechanic when dampness continues or the source is unclear, because an ongoing water leak should not be ignored.

Arrange inspection before a long trip when any of the following applies:
- The same carpet, seat area or storage well becomes wet again after drying.
- You find water but cannot identify how it entered.
- The odor remains despite removing the physical source and drying the interior.
- Water marks appear on the headliner, around a door, or near the trunk or hatch.
- You suspect the HVAC system or another inaccessible area is contaminated.
Check the cabin air filter when HVAC operation triggers the odor
Find the correct filter location
Cabin filters are vehicle-specific. Depending on the model, the access point may be behind the glove compartment or in another HVAC-related location, so use the owner’s manual for the exact panel, orientation and removal instructions. Do not force a cover or install a filter based only on its shape; match the replacement to the vehicle’s specified fit.
Inspect and replace it correctly
- Turn the vehicle off and follow the owner’s manual procedure for accessing the filter.
- Note the airflow arrow or orientation marking before removing the old filter.
- Look for dirt, debris or signs that the filter has become moldy or damp.
- Obtain a replacement cabin air filter listed for the exact vehicle configuration.
- Install it in the specified direction, refit the access panel and run the HVAC system briefly to check whether the odor changes.
A filter replacement addresses the filter; it does not dry wet carpeting or repair a water leak. If the smell persists, return to the interior inspection and consider professional assessment.

Use the owner’s manual for service timing
There is no single replacement interval that applies to every vehicle. AAA Automotive says factory-recommended intervals range from 15,000 to 30,000 miles in its article “The Importance of Cabin Air Filter Replacement for Your Vehicle.” AAA Club Alliance gives a different general range, saying most filters need replacement every 10,000–12,000 miles in its 2023 guidance. These are source-specific guidance ranges, not a universal promise. The owner’s manual controls for your vehicle, and dusty or polluted driving conditions may call for more frequent service.
A road-trip preparation schedule
Several days before departure
- Empty the cabin and cargo area so every floor, storage well and seat seam is visible.
- Run the source inspection and mark any damp or suspicious location.
- Remove wet items and use a wet/dry vacuum on still-wet materials.
- Check the cabin air filter if the odor is linked to the heater, air conditioner or fan.
- Read the owner’s manual for filter access, orientation and the specified service interval.
The day before departure
- Recheck previously wet areas after they have had time to dry.
- Confirm that mats and removable liners are fully dry before reinstalling them.
- Operate the HVAC system and note whether the odor returns with airflow.
- Cancel or adjust the trip plan if a leak remains unexplained or the interior keeps getting wet; schedule a mechanic’s inspection instead of relying on fragrance.
On departure morning
- Look quickly at the footwells, under-seat areas and cargo well for new moisture.
- Make sure the cabin filter access panel and any removed trim are properly refitted.
- Carry only dry luggage and avoid placing wet clothing directly on carpet or upholstery.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Spraying fragrance first
Why it fails: It can hide the symptom while damp material or a leak remains.
Correction: Inspect, remove the physical source, extract moisture and verify that the area stays dry before considering any deodorizing product.

Vacuuming without finding the cause
Why it fails: A wet/dry vacuum removes water that is present but cannot stop new water from entering.
Correction: Treat extraction as moisture removal, then monitor the area. Recurring dampness or an unclear source belongs with a mechanic.
Replacing the filter for every musty smell
Why it fails: A filter is most relevant when the odor is tied to HVAC operation. It will not solve wet flooring, a soaked seat seam or a body leak.
Correction: Use the odor pattern to choose the first check, while still inspecting the rest of the interior.
Using a generic filter or interval
Why it fails: Filter dimensions, access and service schedules differ by vehicle.
Correction: Verify the exact vehicle compatibility and follow the owner’s manual. Treat published mileage ranges as general guidance from their respective AAA sources, not as a replacement for factory instructions.

Closing the car while materials are still damp
Why it fails: Remaining moisture can keep the odor in the cabin and make the original work temporary.
Correction: Allow removable items, carpet and upholstery to dry, then recheck them later. If they dampen again, investigate the source.
When a professional inspection is the right next step
Professional help is warranted when the odor persists after a careful source search and drying, when moisture returns, or when water is present without an obvious explanation. The available guidance does not establish a universal do-it-yourself procedure for extensive mold growth or contamination inside the HVAC system, so do not invent one for a vehicle you cannot verify.

What to bring and what to monitor on the trip
If the vehicle has dried completely and no ongoing leak is suspected, keep luggage and floor coverings dry. Do not store wet towels, swimwear or muddy mats against carpet or upholstery. At fuel or rest stops, take a quick look at the footwells and cargo area if the weather has been wet. A new damp patch is more important than a temporary change in odor: document its location and arrange inspection rather than repeatedly masking it.
If the smell returns only when the fan or climate control runs, stop treating it as an interior-fragrance problem. Recheck the filter information in the owner’s manual and seek assessment if a compatible replacement does not resolve the odor.
Bottom line for a pre-trip decision
A road-trip-ready cabin is one in which you have identified and removed the physical source, extracted and dried wet materials, and confirmed that no area becomes damp again. A climate-linked odor calls for a vehicle-specific cabin-filter check. Persistent, recurring or unexplained moisture calls for a mechanic before departure. These checks take longer than spraying an air freshener, but they address the condition that creates the musty smell instead of merely covering it.
