To download songs on an iPhone, choose the route that matches the music: save Apple Music catalog tracks for offline listening, buy or redownload songs in the iTunes Store, or transfer audio files from a computer. Apple Music downloads are tied to the subscription service; iTunes Store purchases are purchased items; computer transfers are music you already have.
Which download method should you use?

Apple Music and iTunes Store features vary by country or region. Apple’s guides describe iTunes Store purchases as permanently downloadable, while Apple Music downloads are for offline playback through the subscription catalog. Download Apple Music songs for offline listening
You need an Apple Music subscription and Sync Library enabled. Apple’s iPhone guide gives this setting path: Settings > Apps > Music > Sync Library. Once a song is downloaded, you can play it without an internet connection.

- Open the Music app and add the song, album, or playlist to your library.
- Touch and hold the item, then tap Download. For an album or playlist, you can also tap its Download button.
- Find saved items in Library > Downloaded.
To automatically download newly added music, turn on Automatic Downloads in Settings > Apps > Music. You can also control downloads over cellular in Music settings. High-quality cellular audio can use substantially more data than High Efficiency and may incur carrier charges. Buy a song or album in the iTunes Store
If you want to purchase music rather than use the Apple Music subscription catalog, use the iTunes Store app. Availability and store functions depend on your region.
- Open the iTunes Store app and find the song or album.
- Tap the price, or tap Get if the item is offered for free.
- Authenticate if prompted and follow the on-screen steps to complete the purchase.
If the item displays a Download button instead of a price, it has already been purchased on the account and can be downloaded again without another charge. Apple says purchased digital media can be permanently downloaded and accessed offline. See Apple’s iTunes Store instructions for iPhone.

Redownload music you already purchased
Use the iTunes Store’s Purchased area to retrieve music bought previously with your Apple Account.
- Open the iTunes Store app.
- Tap Purchased > Music > Not on This iPhone.
- Select the artist, then tap the download icon beside the track you want.
With Family Sharing, you can view eligible music from a family member’s account listing. If a purchase does not appear, check that you are signed in with the Apple Account used to buy it, look in Hidden Purchases, and check whether the song or album is already in Apple Music. Transfer music from a Mac or Windows computer
If the music is already on your computer, Apple supports transferring compatible music to iPhone. The documented app depends on the computer’s operating system: use Music on macOS 10.15 or later, and iTunes on macOS 10.14 or earlier or on Windows devices. The exact computer workflow can vary with setup; Apple’s Get music on iPhone guide covers computer transfer and Sync Library.
If you use Apple Music and want a library available across devices, Sync Library is an alternative to manually transferring files. Previously purchased iTunes Store items can be downloaded to up to 10 authorized computers and devices, according to Apple’s guide.

Choose the right route when something goes wrong
- Apple Music item will not download: Confirm the subscription is active, Sync Library is turned on, and the item has been added to your library before trying Download.
- A purchased song is missing: Verify the Apple Account used for the purchase, check Hidden Purchases, and look for the item in Apple Music.
- You want offline playback: Download the item first. Streaming alone requires a connection; Apple’s guidance is that music must be downloaded to play when you are not connected.
- Cellular use is a concern: Review Music’s cellular download and audio-quality settings before downloading away from Wi-Fi.
