On a supported Pixel, useful AI notification summaries start with three checks: the phone must be a Pixel 9 or later (not an A-series model), the primary system language must be English or Japanese, and Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries must be enabled. You can then remove noisy apps from the exclusion list, allow Android System Intelligence to read notifications, and give the phone time on Wi-Fi while charging so required updates can download.
These AI summaries are a Pixel feature, not a standard Android function available on every manufacturer’s phone. If your device is not eligible, Android still lets you control app alerts and lock-screen privacy, but those controls do not create AI-written summaries. Google documents no separate paid add-on or subscription that unlocks the feature on unsupported phones.
What Android notification summaries do
Google’s Notification summaries feature creates a brief account of unread messages in your notifications. A sparkle icon identifies a generated summary. Expand or tap the notification to read the full conversation rather than relying on the shortened version.

The feature is designed for a cluster of unread messages, such as a conversation that has accumulated several replies while you were away. It is not a replacement for opening the thread, and it does not guarantee that every sentence, attachment or reaction will appear in the brief account. Treat the summary as a quick way to decide whether a conversation needs attention, then open the full notification when context matters.

Google lists Google Messages, Android Messages and WhatsApp as examples of popular messaging apps whose notifications work with the feature. Its support page does not publish a complete compatibility list, so an app that produces ordinary notifications is not automatically guaranteed to produce a summary. Compatibility can also differ between an app’s notification categories: a message category may be useful while a service, call or promotional category is not.
The feature is intended to condense several unread messages, not to rewrite every alert. A very short alert, an emoji-only message, or content written in mixed languages may not produce a summary. The phone also needs a moment with the screen off; summaries may not appear while you are actively using the device.
Check eligibility before changing settings

If the Notification summaries entry is missing, do not assume that a software switch will unlock it. First verify the model and primary language. Google’s documented eligibility excludes Pixel A-series phones even when their Android version appears current. A current operating-system build alone is therefore not proof that the feature should be present.
There is also no complete public list of supported apps on Google’s help page. The safest test is to use a supported Pixel, an enabled messaging app and several ordinary text notifications. If the setting exists but one particular app never generates a summary, that can be an app or notification-category limitation rather than a phone-wide failure.
Turn on AI notification summaries
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Notification summaries.
- Turn on notification summaries.
- Review Don’t include these apps. Select an app there only if you do not want its alerts summarized.
Leave the exclusion list empty for apps whose message notifications you want considered. Excluding an app does not merely hide one conversation; it prevents that app from participating in the summary feature. You can return to the same screen later to change the selection.
When deciding what to exclude, start with apps that generate frequent low-value alerts rather than removing every app. A busy shopping, social or news app can make the notification shade harder to scan, while a family, work or school messaging app may be the reason you enabled summaries in the first place. Because the control is app-level, it cannot selectively exclude only one contact inside an app.
After switching the feature on, do not judge it from old notifications alone. Send or receive a fresh group of messages, allow the phone to process them, and look for the sparkle-marked summary. A new test makes it easier to tell whether the setting change worked.
Make sure the system can read the notifications
Notification summaries depend on Android System Intelligence. On a supported Pixel, check its access at Settings > Notifications > Privacy > Notification read, reply and control. Android System Intelligence should be allowed. If it is blocked, summaries cannot process notification text even though the summary switch is on.
Also check the source app itself. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the messaging app, and ensure notifications are enabled. You can reach the relevant controls by touching and holding an existing notification and then opening its settings. Android’s labels can differ by device and software version, so the exact route on a non-Pixel phone may not match the Pixel path.
- Enable the app’s main notification permission.
- Do not disable the conversation or category that carries the messages.
- Check that the app is not listed under Don’t include these apps.
- Send or receive a normal text message before testing; a silent, blocked or missing notification cannot be summarized.
Notification permissions operate at more than one level. An app can be allowed in general while a particular category is silent or disabled. Conversely, a category can be active while the app is excluded from summaries. Check both locations before concluding that the feature is broken.

If you touch and hold a notification to open its controls, note which app and category produced it. That detail is useful when several apps have similar names or when a service notification, rather than a conversation notification, is the one appearing in the shade.

Adjust the conditions that affect summary quality
Let messages arrive as readable text
Summaries are less likely when an alert contains only an emoji, is extremely short, or combines languages. When testing, use a notification with several ordinary text messages in the phone’s primary language. This does not force a summary, but it avoids the content conditions Google identifies as reasons one may not be generated.
A mixed-language thread can be especially difficult to evaluate because the phone may be configured correctly while the content itself falls outside the documented conditions. Test with one language first, then try the app’s normal conversations. Emoji reactions, one-word acknowledgments and alerts that contain no message text are poor diagnostic examples.
Stop checking while the screen is active
Google says the screen must be off for a moment before a summary may appear. After messages arrive, lock the phone and wait briefly. Repeatedly waking the screen can make a working feature look unreliable because active phone use is one of the documented reasons a summary may not be generated.
For a fair test, put the phone down after the messages arrive rather than opening the notification shade immediately. Once the screen has been off, wake it and look for the sparkle-marked account. The feature is not intended to summarize every alert instantly while you are already reading the phone.
Keep Battery Saver off during diagnosis
Battery Saver can stop or delay some alerts. Turn it off temporarily while checking summaries. Adaptive Battery can also stop or delay some notifications, according to Google’s Pixel guidance. If alerts are generally late, investigate those power controls before judging the summary feature itself.
Do Not Disturb is a separate possible cause. It silences most notifications according to Google’s Pixel guidance, so first establish that ordinary notifications arrive at all. If alerts disappear at a regular time, inspect Do Not Disturb schedules and rules before changing summary settings.
Give overnight updates a chance to finish
Google advises connecting the Pixel to Wi-Fi while it charges overnight so required AI updates can download. This is especially useful after setup, a reset, or a period in which the phone has been offline. Keep Battery Saver off while you are diagnosing a missing feature, then restore your preferred battery settings after the update period.
Use a trusted Wi-Fi connection and leave the phone charging long enough for background downloads to complete. This recommendation addresses the system components needed by the feature; it does not guarantee a summary for every notification. After the overnight period, repeat the fresh-message test rather than relying on an earlier alert.

A troubleshooting sequence for missing summaries
Work through these checks in order so that a basic eligibility problem is not confused with an app or battery problem.

- Confirm the model. Verify that the phone is a Pixel 9 or later and not an A-series device.
- Confirm the primary language. The documented languages for AI notification summaries are English and Japanese. A secondary keyboard language does not substitute for the primary system language requirement.
- Find the setting. Open Settings > Notifications > Notification summaries and turn it on.
- Inspect exclusions. Remove the test app from Don’t include these apps.
- Allow Android System Intelligence. Go to Settings > Notifications > Privacy > Notification read, reply and control and permit it.
- Enable the app’s alerts. In Settings > Notifications > App notifications, turn on the target app and its relevant notification category.
- Test suitable content. Use several text messages in one supported language, rather than an emoji-only or one-word alert.
- Lock the phone. Leave the screen off for a moment after the notifications arrive.
- Check power and connectivity. Turn off Battery Saver, then connect to Wi-Fi and charge overnight for pending AI updates.
- Separate summaries from general alert failures. If no notifications arrive at all, check Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery. Do Not Disturb silences most notifications, while the power features can stop or delay some alerts.
After each change, test with a new notification. Existing alerts may not be reprocessed immediately, so a fresh message gives you a clearer result.
If only one app fails, compare it with another messaging app named in Google’s examples. If several apps fail under the same conditions, revisit eligibility, Android System Intelligence access and background updates. This comparison does not prove app compatibility, but it helps separate a broad configuration problem from an app-specific one.
When contacting support, record the exact Pixel model, primary language, region, app name, notification category and the type of message used for testing. Also note whether ordinary notifications arrive, whether the screen was off, and whether Battery Saver or Do Not Disturb was active. Those details make it easier to distinguish an eligibility issue from a temporary notification problem.

Google documents a separate feature called Notification Organizer. It groups notifications into categories such as Promotions and news and Social and suggested content. It is not the same as an AI summary: the organizer sorts notifications, while summaries provide a brief account of unread messages.

For Notification Organizer, Promotions and news are on by default. Google says Social and suggested content can be turned on in Settings. Because the available controls can vary with the phone’s software, use the Notification Organizer page shown in your Pixel’s notification settings rather than assuming that the summary switch controls both features.
A Pixel can therefore meet the requirements for one feature and not the other. For example, a phone using Japanese as its primary language may qualify for AI summaries but not for the organizer, which requires English. Likewise, the organizer has a listed regional requirement that Google does not attach to the AI-summary language rule.
If your goal is a shorter account of a conversation, adjust Notification summaries. If your goal is to move promotions or suggested content out of the main flow, inspect Notification Organizer. Turning on one does not automatically enable the other, and changing organizer categories will not make an unsupported app produce an AI-written account.

Summary usefulness and lock-screen privacy are separate decisions. Android lets you choose whether notifications appear on the lock screen and whether sensitive content is hidden. If message previews reveal information you do not want visible, adjust the lock-screen notification and sensitive-content controls instead of disabling every notification.
On Pixel, per-app controls are available from Settings > Notifications > App notifications, and touching and holding a notification opens controls for that app or notification category. On other Android phones, menu names and paths vary by manufacturer. Look for lock-screen notification, sensitive-content and app-notification settings in the device’s Settings app.
Hiding sensitive content can reduce what is readable before unlocking, but it does not turn an ineligible phone into a summary-capable one. Treat privacy controls as presentation settings and eligibility controls as feature requirements.

There is a trade-off between maximum privacy and maximum glanceability. Showing all notification details makes a summary easier to act on from the lock screen, while hiding sensitive content requires unlocking to read the message. Choose the lock-screen behavior independently from the app-exclusion list: an app can remain eligible for summaries while its preview is hidden until you unlock.
If your Android phone is not eligible
Google’s documented AI summaries are limited to Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices. On another Android phone, or on an older Pixel, you can still improve the notification experience by enabling only the apps and categories you need, silencing noisy categories, and choosing how much appears on the lock screen.
- Use Settings > Notifications > App notifications to enable or disable alerts per app.
- Touch and hold an unwanted notification to reach its category controls.
- Use lock-screen settings to show all notifications, hide sensitive content or show none, according to your privacy preference.
- Review Do Not Disturb schedules if alerts disappear at particular times.
- Check Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery when alerts are delayed rather than absent.
These controls organize or suppress ordinary notifications; they do not generate the Pixel AI summary format or its sparkle-marked account of unread messages. Installing a different launcher or changing a lock-screen style should not be treated as a substitute for the documented Pixel eligibility requirement.
If you are considering a new phone specifically for summaries, verify the exact model rather than relying on a product family name. Google’s documented rule is Pixel 9 and later, excluding A-series devices. Check the current model specification and software support at the time of purchase; an eligible device is not required to buy a separate service or accessory for the setting itself.

How long should I wait after enabling summaries?
There is no universal time guarantee in Google’s instructions. Send fresh text messages, lock the phone and leave the screen off for a moment. Connect to Wi-Fi while charging overnight so required AI updates can download.
Will changing lock-screen privacy settings disable summaries?
