To add materia slots to a weapon in Final Fantasy VII Remake, open that weapon’s upgrade tree and spend SP on an available slot-related core upgrade. To level materia, equip it before battles and earn AP. These are separate systems: SP upgrades weapons; AP levels materia. If you mean “weapon AP,” you may be thinking of one of those two.
Materia slots, AP, and SP are different things
Materia goes into slots on your equipped weapon and armor. Equipped materia gains AP through battles, and enough AP raises its level. A weapon’s upgrade tree, by contrast, uses SP to unlock weapon benefits, including slot-related upgrades where that weapon’s tree offers them.

That distinction matters when choosing what to do next. If you want more room for materia, look at the weapon’s core and its SP upgrades. If you want an existing materia to grow, keep it equipped and earn AP. Manuscripts can award SP for weapon upgrades; they are not materia AP items.
This guide covers Final Fantasy VII Remake, including its Intergrade presentation. It does not describe the different systems in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the 1997 original, or Crisis Core.

Which resource do you need?
Start by identifying the result you want rather than by searching for a resource with “weapon” in its name. If your goal is an extra place to equip materia, the relevant action is buying a slot upgrade in the selected weapon’s core tree with SP. If your goal is to increase the level of materia already in your loadout, AP earned in battles is the relevant progress. If you want more weapon-core upgrades later in the game, manuscripts can provide additional SP.
These systems can advance at different times. A weapon upgrade may provide a slot or another weapon benefit, but that does not itself level the materia you put in the slot. Conversely, earning AP for materia does not unlock a weapon-core node. Keeping that distinction in mind prevents you from spending time pursuing manuscripts when you mean to level materia, or looking for an AP activity when what you want is a weapon upgrade.
How to unlock more slots on a weapon
- Open the weapon upgrade screen. Select the character and the weapon you want to improve, then inspect that weapon’s core tree.
- Look for a slot-related upgrade. Weapon cores contain selectable upgrades, and the available nodes depend on the weapon and its progression. Do not assume every weapon offers the same upgrades in the same order.
- Spend SP on the node. If a slot upgrade is available and you have enough SP, unlock it through that weapon’s tree.
- Check the loadout afterward. Return to the Materia & Equipment screen and inspect the weapon’s slots. Confirm whether you gained an additional slot or changed how slots are linked before rearranging materia.
Weapon trees are separate. An upgrade you purchase for one weapon does not transfer to another, so check the selected weapon before spending SP. GameSpot’s weapon-upgrade guide, published April 28, 2020, and GameWith’s guide, last updated August 21, 2022, describe the weapon-specific nature of these upgrades.

It is useful to pause on the core tree and review what the available node actually provides. Not every node is a materia-slot increase, and an upgrade that is attractive on one weapon is not automatically available on another. The relevant question is not simply “How many SP do I have?” but “What does this selected weapon’s next available upgrade do, and is that the benefit I want?”
If a slot-related node is not currently available, do not assume you can buy the same upgrade from another weapon’s tree and have it apply to the one you are using. Each weapon has its own progression. Inspect the weapon you intend to equip, review its currently available core upgrades, and make the decision there. If your selected weapon has no slot node among the options you can choose now, consider other benefits on that tree or revisit it when more options are available.
After buying an upgrade, return to the equipment screen rather than relying on memory or on the tree’s appearance alone. Confirm the slot layout shown for the equipped weapon. The point of this check is practical: it tells you whether you have more spaces, whether a pair is linked, and which materia can actually fit in the loadout you are preparing.
More slots and linked slots are not the same
Count both the slots you can use and the way they are connected. A linked pair allows compatible materia to interact, potentially changing an effect; simply having more slots does not create that interaction. Square Enix’s official systems page explains that paired materia can alter effects. When setting up a weapon, check the actual slot layout rather than judging it by the total alone.
For example, if a setup depends on two materia working together, the presence of two open spaces by itself is not enough. Check whether the spaces are shown as linked and whether the pair you plan to use supports the effect you want. If your priority is simply carrying more individual materia, the total number of slots matters; if your plan depends on an interaction, the link layout matters too. Those are related but different reasons to choose or upgrade a weapon.
It is also worth checking the layout again after changing weapons. Slot count and links belong to the currently equipped weapon’s configuration, not to a universal character-wide pool that you can assume remains identical across every weapon. Build the loadout around the actual weapon you plan to equip for the encounter.
Can you add slots to armor?
The weapon-core upgrade system is specifically for weapons. The official Square Enix system description confirms that materia is equipped in both weapons and armor, but describes weapon growth through weapon cores. The sources available for this guide do not establish a comparable armor-slot upgrade through that system.
For armor, inspect the item in Materia & Equipment and treat its displayed slots as an equipment property. If you need a different layout, compare the armor you have rather than spending SP in a weapon tree expecting it to change armor.

This distinction is easy to miss because both equipment categories hold materia. The fact that you can put materia in armor does not mean armor uses the same upgrade menu or SP nodes as weapons. If you are short on armor slots, first compare the armor pieces displayed in your inventory and the slots each one shows. Do not try to solve an armor loadout problem by buying a weapon-core upgrade: that upgrade is tied to the selected weapon.

When reviewing a full character setup, check the weapon and armor separately. Ask two questions: “What layout does this weapon provide?” and “What layout does this armor provide?” Then decide where the materia you need fits. This keeps the equipment screen’s displayed configuration, rather than an assumed shared slot total, at the center of the decision.
How to earn AP and level materia
Equip the materia you want to grow before entering battles. It gains AP through battle participation while equipped; as it accumulates AP, its level rises. The practical trade-off is loadout space: materia you are not carrying cannot benefit from the AP earned in those fights.
- Choose the materia to develop. Decide which equipped slots you can spare for growth without undermining the abilities you need for the next encounter.
- Equip it on a character’s weapon or armor. Verify it appears in the active loadout, and check linked slots if you are relying on a paired effect.
- Fight normally and allow AP to accumulate. AP comes from battles; weapon upgrades and manuscripts use SP instead.
- Check the materia’s progress in the menu. Keep it equipped for further fights if it has not yet reached the level you want.
Make AP progress part of a useful loadout
There is a balance between using your most effective battle setup and making room for materia you want to develop. Before a fight, decide which materia is essential for the encounter and which equipped materia can use a slot while it gains AP. The goal is not to empty your useful setup just to carry growth materia; it is to make sure the materia you want to level is equipped during battles you were already going to complete.

When you review your setup, check both weapon and armor slots. A materia can be placed in either category when a slot is available, so do not assume that all growth materia has to compete for weapon space. At the same time, check the linked layout if you are depending on a paired effect. Moving a materia to a different slot may affect the arrangement you intended, so verify the equipment screen before beginning the next battle.
After a set of fights, check the materia’s progress rather than guessing based on how long you have played. If it has not reached the level you want, leave it equipped for additional battles. This is a straightforward way to manage AP without treating weapon SP, manuscripts, or weapon-core purchases as part of materia growth.
What is known about the post-story AP bonus
A Game8 search-result excerpt reports a 3× AP bonus after clearing the main story. The underlying page could not be checked, so treat that figure as a version-dependent claim to verify in your game rather than a guaranteed rate for every edition or release. The available information also does not establish an exact repeatable farming route or stacking rules. It does not support the claim that equipment increases AP growth in the base game.
Because the exact route and behavior are not established here, the dependable approach is to keep the materia you want to develop equipped and use battles you can complete efficiently in your version. Check the in-game AP earned and the materia’s progress rather than relying on an assumed multiplier or an unverified route.
If you have completed the story and want to test whether the reported bonus applies to your copy, compare what the game shows for AP progress under your current conditions rather than assuming a particular bonus stacks with other effects. The Game8 excerpt is not enough to establish a universal formula or to recommend a specific loop. Do not plan around an exact number of battles, a particular chapter, or an equipment-based AP boost on the basis of that excerpt alone.
How to get SP for more weapon upgrades
SP is the resource used in weapon core trees. For additional late-game weapon upgrades, seek manuscripts: these award SP, not materia AP. GameSpot’s guide by Phil Hornshaw, dated April 28, 2020, describes manuscripts from sources including the Moogle Emporium, Chapter 9 and Chapter 14 Coliseum content, side quests, and later Hard Mode bosses and side quests.
Hard Mode becomes available after completing the story, through Chapter Select. That makes the post-story chapters relevant if you are looking for more manuscript rewards. The precise reward depends on the activity; consult the chapter’s reward information and the weapon tree before planning around a particular upgrade.
When manuscripts matter
Manuscripts are useful when your immediate goal is more weapon SP and more core upgrades. They are not a shortcut for raising materia levels. If you have a slot upgrade in mind but lack SP, manuscript rewards may be relevant; if your materia is under-levelled, keep it equipped and gain AP in battles instead.

Check the reward details for the activity you are pursuing.

Because Hard Mode is unlocked after finishing the story and can be accessed through Chapter Select, manuscript hunting may involve returning to chapters or taking on post-story content. If you are not yet in that stage, continue progressing with the SP you have and make selective weapon upgrades. If you have completed the story, Chapter Select and Hard Mode provide additional avenues to pursue the manuscripts described by the guide.
Keep the objective clear as you plan: manuscripts support weapon growth by adding SP, while materia AP comes from battles with that materia equipped. If an activity rewards a manuscript, it is addressing the weapon-upgrade side of progression. It does not replace the need to equip materia for AP gains.
How to choose which weapon to upgrade
There is no single best weapon for every character or setup established by these sources. Compare the weapon you actually plan to equip using the factors below. GameSpot notes that a weapon’s unlocked stats and benefits apply when that weapon is equipped, so unlocking a strong upgrade on a weapon you do not use will not improve the weapon currently in hand.
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Slot count and links | More slots provide room for materia; linked slots can enable paired effects. Check the weapon’s actual layout after upgrades. |
| Attack, magic, and defensive profile | Different weapons support different strengths. Choose upgrades in light of the stats and role you want for the equipped weapon. |
| Available core upgrades | Each weapon has its own tree. Inspect the specific nodes and SP cost before committing. |
| Weapon ability and play style | Consider the ability and combat approach you want to use, not only the number of slots. |
Think about the setup you will actually use
More slots can be useful, but the slot count is only one part of a weapon choice. Consider the materia you want to carry, whether you need a linked pair, and the weapon’s attack, magic, or defensive profile. Then compare the available core upgrades and the weapon ability or play style you want. A weapon that looks attractive on one measure may be a poorer fit for the loadout or combat approach you intend to use.
It is also important to distinguish an upgrade you have unlocked from a benefit you are currently receiving. GameSpot’s weapon-upgrade guide notes that a weapon’s unlocked stats and benefits apply when that weapon is equipped. If you invest in one weapon and then switch to another, do not assume the first weapon’s benefits carry over. Equip the weapon whose stats, upgrades, slot arrangement, and ability you want for the current setup.
A practical comparison is to inspect each candidate weapon in turn and record the features that matter to you: its displayed slot count, links, relevant core nodes, and combat profile. You do not need to seek a universal winner. The better choice is the one that supports the character setup and materia arrangement you intend to use, with SP spent on benefits you will actually take advantage of.
Common mistakes and quick fixes
- Spending SP when you mean to level materia: SP buys weapon-core upgrades. Equip materia and earn AP to raise its level.
- Looking for a universal slot upgrade: Inspect the selected weapon’s own tree; upgrades are tied to that weapon.
- Assuming an armor slot changes through a weapon core: Check armor in Materia & Equipment. The weapon-core system applies to weapons.
- Counting slots but missing links: Review the layout, not just the total. Linked materia can interact to change effects.
- Expecting every weapon upgrade to affect the current weapon: Equip the weapon whose stats and benefits you want to use.
- Planning an AP farm around a multiplier or equipment bonus: The reported post-clear 3× rate is not confirmed here for every version, and no exact route or stacking rule is established. Verify the behavior in your game.
A quick check before you leave the menu
If you are unsure why a setup is not changing the way you expected, work through the systems one at a time. First check the selected weapon and its core tree. Confirm that the node you bought was a slot-related upgrade and that it was purchased for the weapon you plan to equip. Next, inspect the Materia & Equipment screen to see the actual slot total and links. Finally, check whether the materia you want to grow is equipped and whether its AP progress has changed after battles.
This sequence helps separate three different problems: a weapon tree that does not offer the node you expected, a loadout whose slots or links are not arranged as intended, and materia that has not accumulated enough AP yet. It also avoids treating SP and AP as interchangeable. Use the menu display and the materia’s progress as your checks rather than relying on a remembered slot arrangement or an assumed farming bonus.

How do I get more materia slots on a weapon?
Open the upgrade tree for the weapon you want to use and look for a slot-related core upgrade. Spend SP to unlock it when it is available, then check the weapon in Materia & Equipment to confirm its new layout. Each weapon has a separate tree, so the upgrade applies to that weapon rather than automatically carrying over to another one.
How do I get more materia slots on armor?
The weapon-core system described for slot-related upgrades is for weapons. Materia can be equipped in armor, but inspect each armor item’s displayed slots in Materia & Equipment and compare the armor you have. Do not expect a weapon-core SP purchase to change an armor item’s slots.
What is the difference between AP and SP?
AP is earned through battles by equipped materia and raises that materia’s level. SP is spent on weapon-core upgrades. Manuscripts can award additional SP, but they are not materia AP items. Use AP when your goal is to develop materia and SP when your goal is a weapon upgrade.

Do more slots mean linked slots?
No. Slot count and slot links are separate features. A linked pair can let compatible materia interact and alter an effect, while an extra unlinked slot simply gives you another place to equip materia. Check the actual layout shown for your weapon before building a setup around a linked effect.

Does a weapon upgrade carry over when I switch weapons?
No. Weapon trees are separate, and the unlocked stats and benefits apply when that weapon is equipped. Review the tree and slot layout of the weapon you intend to use; do not assume an upgrade purchased on one weapon changes another weapon’s configuration.
What is the fastest way to farm AP?
The dependable advice is to equip the materia you want to level and earn AP through battles. A Game8 search-result excerpt reports a 3× AP bonus after the main story is cleared, but its full page could not be checked here, so verify that claim in your version. No exact repeatable route or stacking rule is established, so avoid relying on a specific route or multiplier without checking your game.
Do equipment or manuscripts increase materia AP?
The information here does not establish an equipment-based AP increase in the base game. Manuscripts award SP for weapon upgrades, not materia AP. Keep the materia equipped for battle AP, and treat manuscripts as a separate source of weapon progression.
