In Hello Kitty Island Adventure, cabin upgrades use crates—not ordinary crafting materials. For a repaired visitor cabin, finish the “Bigger on the Inside” quest, interact with the cabin’s outdoor sign, and choose Upgrade. The sign shows the cost for that cabin’s next upgrade; the first visitor-cabin upgrade listed in the references costs 3 crates. The available references do not establish a complete, current list of ways to earn crates, so avoid relying on an unverified farming route.
Which building material do cabin upgrades use?
Cabin upgrades require special crates. The cited cabin references do not indicate that rubber, sticks, Sparks, Mechanisms, Logs, Gizmos, or other ordinary crafting materials can replace them. If you are upgrading a cabin, focus on the crate cost shown at that cabin’s sign.
“Home upgrade” can also mean decorating or crafting something for a different structure. Those tasks may call for other materials, so check the recipe or objective for the specific item rather than treating every building task as a cabin upgrade.

How to upgrade a repaired visitor cabin
- Repair the visitor cabin. The upgrade instructions apply to a repaired cabin.
- Complete “Bigger on the Inside.” This is the cited prerequisite for expanding a visitor cabin.
- Go to the cabin’s outdoor sign. Interact with the sign and select Upgrade.
- Check the displayed crate cost. If you have enough crates, follow the in-game prompt to apply the upgrade.
The first visitor-cabin upgrade cited costs 3 crates and adds a lobby plus a second room. A third-party cabin guide lists successive room-addition costs of 5, 8, 15, and 25 crates, but those figures should not be treated as universal: cabin costs can change with game updates, and the sign is the relevant current price for your cabin. How to get more crates
The cited sources do not verify a complete, current catalogue of activities, quests, regions, or other rewards that grant crates. That means there is no supported crate-farming route to recommend here. Check the rewards shown for activities in your current game, and use the cabin sign to confirm how many crates you still need before committing to an upgrade.
Do not count on My Melody to reduce this cost: the cabin reference says her Handy Helper ability does not lower cabin upgrade prices. The cabin reference covers the upgrade interaction and ability caveat.

Personal cabins, visitor cabins, and other construction
Personal and visitor cabins have different unlock conditions. The cited cabin reference says “Make Yourself At Home” unlocks a personal cabin, while “Friends and Family” unlocks more visitor cabins. For a visitor cabin, the expansion steps above apply after the cabin is repaired and “Bigger on the Inside” is complete. The cabin reference lists these distinctions.

Crafting materials are a separate preparation task
For crafting and other general tasks, PC Gamer recommends collecting daily-limited basics such as rubber and sticks and preparing crafting components ahead of time.
