To expand your wardrobe in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, use four routes: advance the main story and revisit merchants, buy special copies from Mountebank at the Black Cat, unlock Bitterblack Isle for Barroch and cursed armor, and check the bonus inventory supplied by your edition. The best-looking outfit is not always the strongest, so treat appearance, vocation requirements, defense, resistances and weight as separate decisions.
Start with the route that matches your goal
There is no single “best” armor set for every Arisen or pawn. Ordinary shops are the safest way to obtain progressively stronger equipment during the story. The Black Cat is the specialist stop for copies of unusual clothing and armor. Bitterblack Isle (BBI) is the late-game route for powerful equipment, including cursed armor that must be purified. Edition-specific bonus items can add more choices without requiring a new purchase.

Use the table as a decision guide rather than a ranking. A player who wants a different silhouette immediately should prioritize Gran Soren and the Black Cat. Someone replacing weak early gear should keep advancing the story and checking normal vendors. A character ready for difficult post-game battles can make BBI the long-term target, but it is not the sensible first shopping trip for a new Arisen.
How merchant stock expands during the story
Merchants do not necessarily keep the same inventory for the entire game. Their stock expands at story progression stages, so an early visit is not a permanent statement about what that shop can sell. If a town’s equipment looks underwhelming, continue the main quest, complete the next progression milestone, then return and check again.

A practical shopping loop
- Advance the main quest until you reach a meaningful story milestone.
- Return to settlements you have already visited instead of checking only the newest shop.
- Compare newly available pieces by defense, elemental or status resistances, vocation compatibility and weight.
- Keep at least one spare piece when an item has a distinctive appearance; selling it can make later outfit planning harder.
- Store older gear before replacing it if a pawn, alternate vocation or fashion-focused set may need it.
- Bring enough gold for several possible upgrades, but do not empty your purse on a marginal improvement when a major story unlock is close.
General vendor guidance does not guarantee that a particular item appears at a particular quest stage. Individual pieces can have their own unlock conditions, so use the merchant’s current inventory and the item’s stated requirements rather than assuming every shop changes in the same way.
What to compare before buying
Start with whether the piece can be worn by the vocation you are using. Then compare physical and magical defense, elemental and status resistances, weight, and any enhancement already attached to the item. A visually appealing piece that blocks your vocation from equipping it is not a practical purchase, and a heavier upgrade may change your carrying or stamina situation. If two pieces perform similarly, appearance can reasonably be the deciding factor.
Merchants are also useful for building a wardrobe for several characters. The Arisen, main pawn and hired pawns do not have to share one visual theme. Store a replacement instead of selling it when you are unsure; a later pawn or vocation may make better use of it. This is particularly helpful when you are collecting clothing for screenshots, role-playing or a coordinated party rather than pursuing one statistical set.

Use the Black Cat for special clothing and armor copies
Mountebank at the Black Cat sells copies of selected armor and clothing, including certain pieces that originated as downloadable-content-style items. This makes the shop especially useful when your priority is changing the silhouette, colors or overall “look” of an Arisen or pawn rather than simply equipping the highest defense number.
What to do at the shop
- Travel to the Black Cat in Gran Soren.
- Speak with Mountebank and inspect the armor and clothing categories.
- Check the exact item description, price, vocation restrictions and any conditions shown for the piece you want.
- Buy a copy, then equip it through the equipment menu or place it in storage for a pawn or alternate build.
- If a previously owned special item is missing, check the Black Cat before assuming it must be purchased again elsewhere.
The Black Cat is not a universal catalog of every outfit. Stock, availability and restrictions vary by item and can depend on the save or release version. Treat it as a targeted source for unusual pieces, not as a replacement for progressing shops or exploring BBI.
When the Black Cat is the right answer
Choose Mountebank when you know the visual result you want and need another copy, or when an item associated with the original game’s downloadable content has disappeared. It is less useful when your only goal is the strongest possible endgame statistics; in that case, BBI exploration and purification offer a broader advanced-equipment path. You can combine both routes by buying a preferred appearance at the Black Cat and keeping a separate combat set in storage.
Do not assume that every unusual outfit is available simply because one special item is listed. Read the individual entry, note its price and restrictions, and confirm that your edition supports it. If a listing is absent, check story progress, save version and whether the item belongs to a different release before spending time searching other merchants.

Unlock Bitterblack Isle for the largest late-game pool
Bitterblack Isle is the main advanced-equipment route in Dark Arisen. Barroch sells gear and provides services at several locations on the Isle, with additional stock becoming available as you meet conditions there. The Isle also contains chests and monsters that can yield cursed Bitterblack equipment. Purifying a cursed item reveals the usable armor or weapon; Level 3 Bitterblack armor can carry bonus enhancements.
Access requirements and the safest timing
The GOG edition FAQ, published as Capcom USA Customer Support guidance, gives this access sequence: “You must complete the early quest at the Encampment, create your main pawn, and then return to Cassardis at night time.” At the docks, follow the purple mini-map marker and speak with Olra. The same FAQ describes BBI as post-game content and advises completing the main story before visiting. You can reach the Isle earlier, but that recommendation reflects the practical difficulty of the area: enemies and encounters are tuned for a prepared character, not a newly created Arisen.
Step-by-step route to Olra
- Complete the early quest at the Encampment.
- Create your main pawn.
- Return to Cassardis after nightfall.
- Go to the docks and follow the purple marker on the mini-map.
- Speak with Olra to begin access to Bitterblack Isle.
- For a safer first expedition, finish the main story, improve your equipment and bring a balanced party before committing to deep exploration.
If Olra is not offering the route, check those requirements in order rather than repeatedly waiting at the docks. The nighttime return to Cassardis matters in the stated access instructions, as does having a created main pawn. Once access is available, you can decide whether to depart immediately or return after completing the story.
Buying from Barroch
Barroch is the Isle’s principal vendor. His services and inventory become more useful as you progress through BBI, so revisit him after meeting new conditions rather than treating the first visit as his final stock. Because the Isle’s equipment is aimed at advanced play, compare each purchase with your current upgrades instead of spending all your gold on a piece that offers little benefit to your vocation.

After a difficult stretch of exploration, return to see whether new equipment or services are available, then sort the results in storage before continuing. This keeps your inventory manageable and prevents a promising drop from being discarded simply because your pack is full.
Finding and purifying cursed armor
- Explore BBI rooms, corridors and side areas for chests and monster encounters.
- Collect cursed Bitterblack armor when it drops or appears in a chest.
- Return to the appropriate purification service and have the cursed item identified.
- Inspect the revealed armor, including its defense, resistances, weight and any bonus enhancement.
- Keep useful results in storage and repeat purification when you are seeking a different outcome.
Cursed armor is not wearable in its unrevealed state. Purification is part of the acquisition process, and the result is the point at which you can judge whether the item suits your build. Level 3 armor is particularly valuable because it can include bonus enhancements, but obtaining it requires the corresponding BBI progression and preparation.
BBI is an exploration-and-risk route, not a guaranteed shopping list. A chest or monster encounter can produce a cursed item, but the useful result is only known after purification. Bring healing supplies, leave room in your inventory and expect to retreat when the party is no longer handling encounters efficiently. Returning later is better than treating every early death as a required cost of obtaining clothing.

Check included rewards and bonus inventory
Some additional clothing is supplied through edition-specific inventory or quest progression rather than ordinary shops. The GOG FAQ describes its release as a complete package containing previously released console DLC. It lists several items that are available immediately and others that become available after completing the first escort quest and reaching Gran Soren.

- Set of Fop’s Trek Wear

Use that list as guidance for the GOG release, not as a universal unlock table for every current console or PC distribution. If an item is not present, verify the platform, edition and required quest progress before assuming it is missing permanently. Bonus inventory can be an efficient way to add visual variety early, but it should not replace checking ordinary shops as the story advances.
Quest-linked rewards have a different timing from merchant stock. Complete the specified first escort quest and reach Gran Soren for the GOG unlocks described above, then check the relevant inventory or storage location. Keep a note of which character received a bonus item so you do not mistake a pawn’s equipment for a missing reward.
Understand Dark Arisen’s DLC and edition differences
Capcom’s May 1, 2013 DLC notice states that original Dragon’s Dogma DLC items are included in the Dark Arisen package. It also says that if an included item disappears, it can be reacquired at the Black Cat without buying it again. Dark Arisen-exclusive items offered through Olra’s in-game “Online Store” are purchased inside the game; the notice says there is no need to buy the original game’s DLC separately through a console marketplace for Dark Arisen.
That notice is edition guidance from 2013, so it should not be read as a promise about every current digital storefront listing or every platform’s user interface. Confirm that you own Dark Arisen, rather than the original release, before spending money on anything marketed as additional clothing. Buying a separate copy of original-game DLC is not the recommended way to expand a Dark Arisen wardrobe.
GOG-specific limitations
The GOG FAQ says its release has no Rift Crystal microtransactions and that Berserk armor and weapons are excluded because of licensing restrictions. Those statements apply to that release and should not be generalized to every console edition. In particular, the absence of Berserk equipment is not a bug that can be fixed by revisiting the Black Cat.

- Appearance: silhouette, color, exposed face and the visual theme of the party.
- Performance: physical and magical defense, elemental resistance, status resistance and any enhancement.
- Mobility: total carried weight and the stamina impact of heavier equipment.
A fashion-focused set can be a sensible choice in safe story areas, while a high-resistance set may be preferable for a difficult boss or BBI run. You can preserve a favorite look in storage and maintain a separate combat set rather than forcing one outfit to serve every situation.
Cosmetic customization beyond armor
The GOG FAQ lists 62 hairstyles and 42 facial-hair styles for its PC version. The FAQ does not provide a publication year, and those totals should not be treated as current cross-platform statistics. They do, however, illustrate that changing the character creator options can complement an armor change when the problem is that your Arisen or pawn still resembles an early-game NPC.

Treat character-creator choices as a visual layer, then make equipment decisions using the item’s actual restrictions and attributes. This separation makes it easier to keep a recognizable character style while changing combat gear for a particular area.
Compare routes by timing, purpose and risk
When deciding where to spend your next visit, ask three questions. When is the route available? Story merchants work throughout progression, the Black Cat becomes relevant once you can reach Gran Soren, and BBI follows the Encampment and pawn requirements but is best treated as post-game. What are you trying to obtain? Merchant upgrades emphasize dependable progression, Mountebank emphasizes copies and appearance, and BBI combines advanced purchases with exploration and purification. What preparation is required? A normal shop visit is comparatively safe, while BBI demands a prepared party, supplies and willingness to retreat.
There is no universal winner because vocation, resistances, weight and personal style change the answer. A player prioritizing a costume may accept lower defense in a safe area; another may keep the same visual theme by using a high-resistance piece during a boss encounter. Keep both options when storage allows instead of selling a specialized item simply because it is not optimal everywhere.

The shop still looks unchanged
- Advance the main quest farther and revisit the merchant after the next story milestone.
- Check whether the item has a separate unlock condition rather than relying on a general shop progression rule.
- Confirm that you are visiting the Black Cat for special copies instead of an ordinary armor vendor.
- Check your storage and pawn equipment before concluding that an item was never obtained.
A DLC-style item is gone
- For Dark Arisen, check Mountebank at the Black Cat; Capcom says included original-game DLC items can be reacquired there.
- Verify that the item belongs to your edition. GOG’s exclusion of Berserk gear is a licensing limitation, not an inventory error.
- Check storage and the equipment of every active pawn before buying another copy.
- Confirm that you are not comparing a console unlock table with the GOG-specific list.
Olra does not offer access
- Confirm that the early Encampment quest is complete.
- Confirm that your main pawn has been created.
- Return to Cassardis at night and go to the docks.
- Look for the purple mini-map marker and speak with Olra directly.
- If access is available but the Isle is overwhelming, leave and return after the main story.
BBI gear is too difficult to obtain
- Leave and improve your story equipment, skills and party composition.
- Return after completing the main story, as the GOG FAQ recommends.
- Use Barroch’s services and revisit him as BBI conditions unlock more stock.
- Do not judge a cursed armor piece until it has been purified and its actual result is visible.
- Carry fewer disposable items so chests and drops do not force you to abandon useful equipment.
A progression plan that minimizes wasted money
- Early game: buy practical upgrades from current merchants and keep distinctive clothing in storage.
- Mid-story: revisit earlier shops after major quests, then compare their expanded stock with your existing gear.
- Gran Soren: visit the Black Cat for special copies and check whether your edition supplies bonus clothing.
- Before BBI: finish the main story if possible, organize healing items, and build a party that covers your vocation’s weaknesses.
- BBI: buy from Barroch, explore for cursed equipment, purify useful finds and retain separate appearance and combat sets.
This sequence gives you more clothing choices without treating every new item as a mandatory upgrade. Revisit merchants for ordinary progression, use the Black Cat when you want a specific look, and reserve BBI farming for characters ready to handle its danger. Before paying for anything, identify whether you need a stronger statistic, a replacement copy or simply a different appearance; that one distinction prevents most unnecessary purchases.

How do I unlock Bitterblack Isle?
Complete the early Encampment quest, create your main pawn, return to Cassardis at night, follow the purple marker to the docks and speak with Olra. The GOG FAQ recommends finishing the main story before treating BBI as a regular gear route.
