The most reliable early-game way to get Leather in Palworld is to use the Paldeck to check which nearby Pals list Leather under Possible Drops, then defeat, capture, or butcher those Pals. This route needs no special base setup and works as soon as you can safely explore. If fighting is inefficient, named merchants sell Leather for 150 currency each. Later, the item reference lists Surfent as a Ranch source, allowing a more passive supply once your base and Pal roster can support it.
What Leather is used for
Leather is a material obtained from specific Pals. It is used in crafting and appears in Pal-gear recipes, including gear such as Daedream’s Necklace and Nitewing’s Saddle. Because recipes consume different quantities, check the recipe you are about to craft before deciding how much to farm. Treat Leather as a progression material rather than a general-purpose resource: spend the first batches on equipment that unlocks a concrete capability you need next.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe item reference currently lists Leather with a weight of 2 and a sell price of 15. Those are page values, not independently dated publisher statistics, so use them as an inventory and economy reference rather than as a promise that every game version behaves identically.
The three ways to obtain Leather
| Method | What you do | Best use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunt eligible Pals | Find a nearby Pal whose Paldeck entry lists Leather under Possible Drops, then defeat it. | Immediate early-game materials | Requires travel, combat, and repeated encounters |
| Capture or butcher eligible Pals | Capture an eligible Pal when you also want it, or butcher an eligible Pal when that action fits your playstyle. | Combine material gathering with Pal collection, or process spare Pals | Results depend on the particular Pal and current game behavior |
| Buy from a merchant | Purchase Leather for the listed 150 currency per item from an available named or wandering merchant. | Fast replenishment when currency is plentiful | Consumes currency instead of combat time |
| Ranch a Surfent | Assign Surfent to a Ranch and allow the base setup to produce Leather. | Passive production after your base is established | Requires the Pal, a Ranch setup, and ongoing base management; no production rate is established here |
For a new character, hunting is normally the first route because it begins with exploration and the Pals already around you. Buying is a convenience option, while Ranching is a later scaling option rather than a first-minute solution.

How to verify a Leather drop before you farm
Use the Paldeck as your target list
Do not assume that a visually similar Pal drops the same materials as another one. Open the Paldeck entry for the specific Pal you are considering and look for the Possible Drops section. Leather must be listed there before that Pal is a sensible farming target.
- Open the Paldeck.
- Select the entry for a Pal you can reach safely.
- Read its Possible Drops list.
- Choose the Pal only if Leather is listed.
- Repeat the check whenever you switch to a different species or when a game update may have changed drop tables.
This check is more dependable than copying a fixed “best Pal” list. Drop tables are patch-sensitive, and a target that was convenient in one version may not be the right target in another. The Paldeck entry in your current game is the authority for the particular Pal and version you are playing.

Among eligible Pals, prioritize the one you can reach repeatedly without exhausting your healing, ammunition, equipment durability, or travel time. A slightly less convenient Pal on a safe route can produce a better real-world supply than a difficult target that forces long detours. The goal is a repeatable loop: leave your base, reach the target area, resolve encounters safely, collect the results, and return before your trip becomes a liability.
Early-game Leather route: step by step
Step 1: Set a specific crafting goal
Before leaving, identify the next recipe that needs Leather. A clear goal prevents you from spending your entire stock on a lower-priority item and then having to repeat the trip. Gear such as Daedream’s Necklace and Nitewing’s Saddle illustrates why Leather can matter at different points in progression: one recipe may improve a companion’s utility, while another supports travel or mobility. The exact quantity is recipe-dependent, so read the recipe itself.
Step 2: Check a nearby Paldeck entry
Use the Paldeck to confirm Leather under Possible Drops. If the first nearby Pal does not list it, check another entry rather than trying to force that encounter into a farming route. Keep the check tied to the species, not merely the area where you found it.

Step 3: Pick the safest collection action
Defeating an eligible Pal is the direct material loop. Capturing an eligible Pal can also provide Leather and gives you the Pal for your collection or base plans. Butchering an eligible Pal is another listed way to obtain the material when you have a spare Pal and that action fits your playstyle. No universal yield for each action is established, so do not assume that one action always produces more.
Step 4: Run short, repeatable trips
On the first trip, test the route rather than committing to a long session. Confirm that the chosen Pal is available, that you can resolve encounters safely, and that your inventory can carry the results. If the route works, repeat it until you have the amount required by the recipe plus a small reserve for the next known upgrade. If the route is dangerous or slow, return to the Paldeck and choose another verified target.
Step 5: Check your inventory before crafting
Leather has a listed weight of 2, so carrying a large reserve uses inventory capacity. Deposit unneeded materials before another run and craft when you have reached the amount your target recipe requires. Selling Leather is usually a poor way to fund a purchase: the listed sell price is 15 per item, while the listed merchant purchase price is 150, a tenfold difference.
Defeating, capturing, or butchering: which action should you use?
Defeat for a direct material loop
Defeating is the simplest choice when your only objective is Leather. It avoids using the trip to expand your Pal roster and keeps the loop focused on material collection. It is still conditional on the Pal being eligible, so verify the drop first.
Capture when the Pal has another job
Capture an eligible Pal when you also want that Pal for your collection, party, or base plans. Because capture can provide Leather as well, one encounter can serve two objectives. Do not count on a fixed amount without checking the result in your current game; the game information establishes the method, not a universal per-capture yield.

Butcher only when it matches your plan
Butchering an eligible Pal is listed as another way to obtain Leather. Use it for spare Pals you have deliberately decided not to keep, and make sure you understand that the action is part of your own resource-management choice. If you are uncertain whether a particular Pal can provide Leather, return to its Paldeck entry before processing it.
Buying Leather from merchants
Merchants provide a currency-based fallback when hunting is taking too long or when you need a small amount immediately. The item page lists a current purchase price of 150 currency per Leather. That is a listed page value, not an independently dated publisher statistic, and merchant inventories and prices can change with patches.
Merchants named in the item reference
- Caravan Leader
- Duneshelter Red Shirt Merchant
- Fishermans Point Red Shirt Merchant
- Random incident wandering merchants
Check the merchant’s current inventory before planning a trip around a purchase. A named location does not remove the need to verify availability in your game, and a wandering merchant is inherently less predictable than a merchant you can revisit at a known point.
When buying beats another hunt
Buying makes sense when you already have surplus currency, need only a few pieces to finish a recipe, or would spend more time and risk traveling to a verified drop source than the purchase is worth. It is less attractive when you are short on currency and can safely repeat a local hunting loop. Compare the cost in both currencies: hunting spends time and combat resources; buying spends 150 currency per item.
Setting up a passive Leather option with Ranching
The item reference lists Surfent as producing Leather when assigned to a Ranch. This makes Ranching a base-management option for a continuing supply rather than the simplest opening move. You need a suitable Surfent, a functioning Ranch arrangement, and enough base capacity to keep the assignment practical.

When Ranching is worth adding
- You have already established a stable base and can spare a Pal assignment.
- You expect to need Leather repeatedly for several recipes.
- You prefer production that continues while you perform other base work.
- You have confirmed that Surfent’s current in-game behavior matches the item reference after your game version’s updates.
What is not established
No exact Leather-per-minute or per-cycle rate is available. Do not plan a precise production schedule from an unverified number. Instead, treat Ranching as supplemental production, inspect the Ranch output in your own save, and keep a hunting or buying fallback for an urgent recipe.
Choosing between hunting, buying, and Ranching
| Question | Hunting | Buying | Ranching |
|---|---|---|---|
| How soon can it start? | As soon as you can reach and safely handle an eligible Pal. | As soon as you can reach a merchant with Leather in stock and have currency. | After you have the Ranch setup and a Surfent assignment. |
| What resource does it consume? | Travel time, combat capacity, and inventory space. | 150 currency per listed item. | Base space, a Surfent, and management attention. |
| Does it scale while you do other work? | No; you must continue making trips. | No; each purchase spends currency. | Yes in principle, because it is a Ranch assignment, but the exact output rate is not established. |
| What should you verify? | Leather under the Paldeck entry’s Possible Drops. | Current inventory and current listed price. | Surfent’s current Ranch behavior in your game version. |
Use hunting for immediate access, buying for convenience when currency is the cheaper bottleneck, and Ranching for a longer-term base routine. You can combine them: hunt while establishing your base, buy a small shortage, and let Ranch production cover future needs.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Farming a Pal without checking Possible Drops
Symptom: several encounters produce no Leather. Fix: stop and open that Pal’s Paldeck entry. If Leather is absent from Possible Drops, change targets instead of extending the same route.
Assuming a fixed “best Pal” or yield
Symptom: a guide’s promised amount does not match your results. Fix: rely on the current Paldeck and your own observed results. No consistent, dated early-game drop-rate table establishes a universal best-yield ranking.
Confusing selling value with buying cost
Symptom: you sell Leather for 15 and later need 150 to replace each piece. Fix: reserve Leather for recipes unless you have a deliberate reason to sell it; the listed sell and purchase values are very different.

Traveling to a merchant without enough currency
Symptom: you reach a merchant but cannot complete the purchase. Fix: check your currency before leaving, calculate the number of pieces needed, and compare that cost with a nearby verified hunting loop.

Symptom: the Ranch does not produce Leather as quickly as expected. Fix: confirm that Surfent is assigned correctly and inspect the current output in your save. Keep in mind that no fixed rate is established and Ranch behavior can be patch-sensitive.
Carrying too much Leather
Symptom: inventory fills during a farming trip. Fix: remember the listed weight of 2, deposit surplus materials before leaving, and stop once you have the amount needed for your planned recipe and a reasonable reserve.
A practical decision checklist
- Need Leather immediately and have a safe local route? Verify an eligible Pal in the Paldeck and hunt it.
- Want the Pal as well as the material? Capture an eligible target and check the resulting inventory.
- Have spare Pals and accept processing them? Butcher only an eligible Pal confirmed through the Paldeck.
- Have surplus currency but little time? Check the Caravan Leader, Duneshelter Red Shirt Merchant, Fishermans Point Red Shirt Merchant, or a wandering merchant; the listed price is 150 each.
- Need a recurring supply after your base is established? Test Surfent on a Ranch and observe the current output rather than relying on an unverified rate.
- Unsure whether a route still works after an update? Recheck the Paldeck, merchant listing, and Ranch behavior in the current version.
Keeping the strategy current after patches
Leather sources are tied to Pal drop tables, merchant data, and Ranch behavior, all of which can change. A reliable routine therefore has a verification step whenever the game updates: open the Paldeck entry for your target, inspect the merchant’s current stock and price, and confirm that Surfent still produces Leather when assigned to a Ranch. This takes less time than rebuilding a large farm around an outdated list.
Because no consistent dated table establishes exact early-game yields, avoid promises such as “X Leather per minute” or claims that one Pal is always best. Measure your own route by the amount you actually collect per trip, the currency you save or spend, and whether the method lets you complete the recipe you planned.
Quick Recap
Recommended progression
- First Leather: use the Paldeck to identify a nearby eligible Pal and collect Leather through a safe defeat, capture, or butchering choice.
- First upgrade: spend the material on the next Pal-gear recipe that solves your immediate progression problem.
- Shortfall: if only a few pieces are missing and currency is plentiful, compare the 150-each merchant price with another trip.
- Repeat demand: once your base is stable, test a Surfent Ranch assignment as passive support while retaining a verified hunting route.
- After updates: repeat the Paldeck, merchant, and Ranch checks before trusting an old farming plan.
