Jellyfin has not disappeared from Fire TV; newer models may use a different operating system. The app identified for those devices is Astra, a third-party Jellyfin client whose developer describes it as built for Fire TV models running Vega OS. Astra requires a Jellyfin server of your own; it is a way to connect to your library, not a hosted media service.
Why the Jellyfin Android TV app may be missing
“Fire TV Stick” covers devices with different operating systems. Jellyfin lists its official Android TV client for Android TV and Fire TV devices, and the client repository names Android TV, Nvidia Shield, and Amazon Fire TV among its supported categories. That does not mean the Android TV app works on every Fire TV generation.
In a May 24, 2026 project update, Jellyfin said newer Fire TV Stick models released since 2025 use Vega OS and described its own Vega OS client as being in prototype phase at that time. That is a dated status, not confirmation of the client’s status today. A Jellyfin repository issue about the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) also identifies that specific model as running Vega OS and says it is incompatible with the Android TV app; it should not be treated as a complete compatibility list for all models or regions.

Which Jellyfin app to use on your Fire TV

These descriptions come from the Jellyfin client directory, the Android TV client repository, and Astra’s developer site. They do not establish a head-to-head comparison of speed, picture quality, stability, codec support, or ease of use.
How to check your Fire TV and install the right client
- Check the device’s model and operating system. Open the Fire TV settings and find the device’s system or “About” information. Menu labels can differ by model and software version. Use the displayed OS and model to determine whether the device is running Vega OS or Android-based Fire TV software; do not infer this from “Fire TV Stick” alone.
- If it runs Vega OS, verify the requirements for Astra. Astra’s help page is labeled for Astra 1.4.0 and says Vega OS 1.2 or later is required. Check the current device store listing and app version before installing, since availability and software versions can change.
- Find Astra on the device or use its Amazon Appstore listing. The developer’s instructions say to search for Astra on the Fire TV device or use the Amazon Appstore listing. The developer describes Astra as available through the Appstore, but availability can vary; confirm that it is currently listed for your device.
- Connect it to your Jellyfin server. Astra’s instructions say to select a discovered server or enter its address, then log in. The developer says the app can find a server on the local network or accept an address for a remote server. The server must already be running and reachable from the Fire TV; installing a client does not set up or host your library.
- If the device runs Android-based Fire TV software, check the official client route. Use Jellyfin’s client directory and repository to confirm that the Android TV app fits your device and its current software.
What to know about Astra’s playback support
Astra’s developer release notes describe fixes related to resuming a title, switching audio tracks, and enabling burned-in subtitles that could close the app after the Vega OS 1.2 update. These notes show that playback behavior can depend on app and OS versions; they do not independently verify that every playback issue is resolved or establish support for every media format.

If the app installs but playback or connection fails, first confirm the device’s OS and Astra version, then check that the Jellyfin server address is reachable from the Fire TV and that your login details are correct. The available documentation does not establish a single fix for every network, server, or media-file problem.
If you are choosing different hardware
An Android TV streaming device is another platform category to consider because Jellyfin documents an Android TV client. Confirm the exact model’s operating system and Jellyfin compatibility before buying: the cited Jellyfin pages do not verify a particular current model, price, or performance level.
