For most first-time players, use release order: Bayonetta (2010), Bayonetta 2 (2014), then Bayonetta 3 (2022). Play Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon afterward as an optional, childhood-era story—or start with it if you prefer a gentler, exploration-and-puzzle-focused introduction.

The recommended Bayonetta play order

The numbered trilogy is the clearest route into the series because each game arrived in this sequence and assumes you are following Bayonetta’s continuing journey: Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and Bayonetta 3. Once those are complete, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon provides an optional look at Cereza as a child, before she is known as Bayonetta.

Order Game First release What a newcomer should know Recommended place
1 Bayonetta 2010 A witch awakens without her memories and follows clues to Vigrid while angels attack. Start here for the numbered series.
2 Bayonetta 2 2014 After the events surrounding Balder’s defeat, Bayonetta travels to rescue Jeanne’s soul from Inferno. Play after Bayonetta.
3 Bayonetta 3 2022 A new threat attacks the world, and a mysterious young “Third Witch” asks Bayonetta for help. Play after Bayonetta 2.
Optional Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon March 17, 2023 Young Cereza and her first demon, Cheshire, enter the forbidden Avalon Forest. Best after the trilogy for release order; also suitable as an alternate entry point.

PlatinumGames lists the original Bayonetta as a 2010 release, Bayonetta 2 as a 2014 Wii U release, and Bayonetta 3 as a Nintendo Switch release on October 28, 2022. PlatinumGames and Nintendo list Origins for Nintendo Switch on March 17, 2023. Those are original release dates, not current availability or sale prices.

Why release order works best for a first playthrough

It preserves the series’ introduction to Bayonetta

The first Bayonetta establishes the character, her missing memories, the world around Vigrid, and the conflict that later games build upon. Starting there lets the setting and recurring characters arrive in the order the developers originally presented them. You do not need a glossary or an earlier spin-off to understand the opening game.

It keeps the numbered progression straightforward

Bayonetta 2 is designed as the follow-up to the first game. Its story begins after the events associated with Balder’s defeat and quickly gives Bayonetta a personal mission: Jeanne’s soul has been taken to Inferno, so Bayonetta sets out to save her. Playing the first game beforehand gives that objective its intended context without requiring a plot recap.

It postpones the most continuity-sensitive questions

Bayonetta 3 introduces a new danger, a young “Third Witch,” and ideas that invite questions about how different versions of events relate to one another. The official descriptions establish the setup but do not provide a complete map of every continuity issue. Release order lets you encounter those questions naturally instead of treating a theory about them as settled canon.

What each game is about, without major spoilers

Bayonetta (2010)

SEGA’s official story description begins with a mysterious woman awakening without her memories. She travels toward Vigrid, where angels assail her and encounters gradually draw out pieces of her past. That premise makes the first game an especially useful starting point: you learn who Bayonetta is at the same time she learns more about herself.

The game is presented as an action title. Expect its identity to come from fast, spectacle-driven encounters rather than from a slow, purely narrative introduction. You can begin without knowing the mythology or the names of the factions; the mystery structure supplies the necessary information as you progress.

Bayonetta 2 (2014)

PlatinumGames describes Bayonetta and Jeanne as having enjoyed a few months of peace since Balder’s defeat. That peace ends when Jeanne’s soul is taken to Inferno. Bayonetta’s attempt to retrieve it provides the sequel’s immediate motivation.

Play this after the original even if you already know the broad premise. The sequel relies on the emotional and historical foundation established in Bayonetta, while still presenting its own setting and conflict. A short break between games is fine; a full replay of the first is unnecessary unless you want to refresh your memory.

Bayonetta 3 (2022)

PlatinumGames’ high-level description says mysterious life forms attack the world and that a young “Third Witch” seeks Bayonetta’s aid. That is enough information to understand the opening situation without exposing the discoveries the game expects you to make.

Approach the third game after Bayonetta 2. Avoid reading detailed explanations of its later plot before playing: the official introductory material deliberately leaves the larger relationship among characters, worlds, and versions open, and detailed summaries can remove the impact of those revelations.

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon (2023)

Origins follows young Cereza, before she comes to be called Bayonetta, as she enters the forbidden Avalon Forest in search of power to save her mother. She is accompanied by her first demon, Cheshire. Nintendo and PlatinumGames describe the adventure as a combination of exploration, combat, puzzle solving, and cooperative ability use between Cereza and Cheshire.

This is not simply Bayonetta 4. It is a distinct, childhood-focused game with a different presentation and play style. Its setting places it earlier in Cereza’s life, but that fact alone does not answer every continuity question raised by Bayonetta 3. Treat it as a self-contained prequel-style experience rather than as a key that resolves every timeline interpretation.

Release order versus character chronology

Release order

Bayonetta → Bayonetta 2 → Bayonetta 3 → Origins is the order in which a newcomer can experience the published games while preserving the numbered trilogy’s progression. It is the safest recommendation if you care about discovering the series’ ideas, references, and surprises as audiences originally did.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cereza’s life chronology

Origins comes earlier in the character’s life because it stars Cereza as a child. In that limited sense, a chronological route would place Origins before the numbered games. However, “earlier in Cereza’s life” is not the same as a complete explanation of every timeline or version represented in Bayonetta 3. The official descriptions consulted do not supply such a complete continuity map.

Which order should you choose?

  • Choose release order if this is your first Bayonetta experience, you want the numbered games to build naturally, or you want to minimize pre-release spoilers.
  • Choose Origins first if you prefer an adventure structured around exploration and puzzles, want to meet Cereza as a child, or are uncertain whether a demanding action game is your preferred entry point.
  • Use a hybrid order by playing Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, Origins, and then Bayonetta 3. This gives you the childhood context before the third numbered game while retaining the first two games’ release sequence. It is a personal preference, not an officially required order.

Can Origins be your first Bayonetta game?

Yes. Hideki Kamiya, Bayonetta Origins’ supervising director and PlatinumGames’ chief game designer, wrote that the team hoped to welcome people unfamiliar with the Bayonetta series as well as existing fans. He also described the game as intended for players who may not be comfortable with action games. That is a statement about the game’s intended audience, not a promise that every player will prefer it as a starting point.

Origins may suit you first when you want to learn the world through a young protagonist, prefer controlling two characters whose abilities work together, or want exploration and puzzle solving alongside combat. You should start with Bayonetta instead when the main character’s established identity, the numbered trilogy’s action focus, and release-order discovery matter more to you.

Starting with Origins will not make the numbered games unplayable. You will simply encounter the series’ childhood-era material before the version of Bayonetta introduced in the original game. If you later move to Bayonetta, the opening still functions as a fresh introduction because it centers on her lost memories and her arrival in Vigrid.

How the gameplay changes across the series

The numbered trilogy

The first three numbered entries are described as action games. Their common expectation is direct, encounter-focused play built around Bayonetta rather than a two-character exploration structure. If you are choosing among them, the main decision is not a different genre: it is which stage of the continuing Bayonetta story you want to experience.

Origins

Origins uses a distinct adventure format. You control Cereza and Cheshire, combine their abilities, explore the forest, fight enemies, and solve environmental puzzles. That design changes the pace and the way progress is made, so it should not be judged as a conventional numbered sequel.

A practical choice for hesitant action players

If high-intensity action is the reason you have avoided the series, Origins is the logical experiment. Its supervising director explicitly addressed players who may not be comfortable with action games, and its mechanics distribute tasks between Cereza and Cheshire. If you already know that stylish action is what attracts you, begin with Bayonetta and save Origins for a change of pace.

Platforms and editions to check before buying

Game Platform information established by official listings What to verify before purchase
Bayonetta PlatinumGames documents releases on multiple platforms. Confirm the platform, edition, and regional store listing for the version you intend to use.
Bayonetta 2 Official listings identify Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions. Check whether you need the Wii U release or the Switch edition; do not assume one purchase supplies the other.
Bayonetta 3 Official listings identify Nintendo Switch. Confirm that your account and console region support the listed edition.
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon Official listings identify Nintendo Switch, including a physical edition listed by Nintendo’s Canadian store. Match the listing to your region and edition. Nintendo says the Switch version behaves consistently with Nintendo Switch on Nintendo Switch 2.

Availability is not uniform across the series. A Switch owner can find official Switch listings for Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 3, and Origins, while the original Bayonetta has appeared on several platforms. Check the platform label rather than assuming that “Bayonetta collection” language means every game is included. Current retailer prices and stock change over time and were not established in the official descriptions used here.

A spoiler-light plan for your first playthrough

  1. Decide whether release order or a gentler introduction matters more. Pick Bayonetta for the standard route; pick Origins only if its childhood setting and different adventure structure are the stronger draw.
  2. Confirm your platform before buying. Bayonetta 2 is associated with Wii U and Switch listings, Bayonetta 3 and Origins with Switch listings, and the original with multiple platform releases. Select the edition that matches your console and region.
  3. Play Bayonetta without researching later twists. The opening mystery about Bayonetta’s memories is more effective when you know only the official premise: she awakens without memories, reaches Vigrid, and faces angels.
  4. Move to Bayonetta 2 once the first game’s ending is complete. Its setup follows the events around Balder’s defeat and gives you a clear goal involving Jeanne’s soul and Inferno.
  5. Play Bayonetta 3 after the second game. Keep descriptions at the level of its official setup—a new threat, mysterious life forms, and a young Third Witch—until you have reached the relevant discoveries yourself.
  6. Add Origins when you want additional Cereza context. Play it after the trilogy for release-order fidelity, or insert it between Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3 if you prefer to experience the childhood story before the final numbered entry.

Common mistakes when starting the series

Treating Origins as a mandatory first chapter

Origins is optional for following the numbered release sequence. Its childhood setting makes it earlier in Cereza’s life, but the game was released after Bayonetta 3 and uses a different structure. You do not need it to understand why the original Bayonetta begins with lost memories.

Assuming every continuity question has one official answer

Bayonetta 3 encourages interpretation, but the short official descriptions do not settle every relationship among timelines and versions. Keep the distinction clear: the release order is definite; broader continuity explanations may require interpretation and should not be presented as established fact in a spoiler-free introduction.

Buying the wrong platform edition

Platform availability differs by game. Bayonetta 2’s Wii U and Switch listings are not interchangeable labels, and a Switch listing for one title does not imply that every other title is available on that console. Read the platform and edition field on the current store page before paying.

Expecting Origins to play like the numbered games

Origins combines Cereza and Cheshire, exploration, combat, and puzzles. The numbered games are action titles centered on Bayonetta. Choose based on the experience you want rather than assuming the childhood story is simply another numbered action installment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Looking for prices in a story guide

Prices, inventory, and regional offers change. The official material establishes release dates, platforms, premises, and an Origins physical listing, but not a stable current price. Treat any price shown by a retailer as time- and region-specific.

Frequently asked questions about Bayonetta order

What order should I play the Bayonetta games in?

Play Bayonetta, then Bayonetta 2, then Bayonetta 3. Add Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon afterward if you want the optional childhood-era story.

Is Bayonetta Origins a prequel?

It is a childhood-era story about Cereza before she is known as Bayonetta. That establishes its place in her life, but it does not by itself provide a complete explanation of every continuity question raised by Bayonetta 3.

Can I start with Bayonetta 2?

You can, but it is a weaker first introduction than Bayonetta because the sequel follows the original’s events and assumes that foundation. Start with Bayonetta unless you have a specific reason to begin with the second game.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Do I need to play Origins to understand Bayonetta 3?

No. Origins is optional for the numbered sequence. Playing it may add childhood context for Cereza, but the main trilogy remains the recommended path for following the numbered games.

Which game is best if I do not usually play action games?

Origins is the most relevant first experiment because its supervising director explicitly discussed welcoming players unfamiliar with the series or uncomfortable with action games. It still includes combat, but its structure also emphasizes exploration and puzzles.

Are all four games available on Nintendo Switch?

Official listings identify Switch versions of Bayonetta 2, Bayonetta 3, and Origins. The original Bayonetta has appeared on multiple platforms, so confirm the current regional listing and edition for that game rather than assuming universal Switch availability.

Should I play Origins before or after Bayonetta 3?

After Bayonetta 3 is the cleanest release-order choice. Placing Origins between Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3 is also reasonable if you want its childhood story before the final numbered entry; neither placement resolves every continuity interpretation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Start with Bayonetta, continue to Bayonetta 2, and finish the numbered run with Bayonetta 3. Treat Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon as an optional fourth stop for Cereza’s childhood and a different exploration-and-puzzle experience, or use it first only when that format is a better fit than the numbered games’ action focus.
