When AT&T internet is down, first confirm the interruption on AT&T’s outage page and request text updates. If an outage is confirmed, the practical ways online are cellular data, a phone hotspot, a dedicated mobile hotspot, or—if your Fiber account qualifies—AT&T Internet Backup. If AT&T reports no outage, restart the gateway and troubleshoot the local connection instead.
Each option depends on different conditions. A hotspot device cannot create service without cellular coverage, an active SIM and a plan that allows hotspot use. AT&T Internet Backup has narrower eligibility but can keep the All-Fi Hub serving your home over an associated wireless phone.
Check whether AT&T has confirmed an outage
Do this before buying equipment, changing network settings or repeatedly rebooting your gateway. Open AT&T’s Check for Outages in Your Area page, sign in or enter the requested account or address details, and review the status shown for your service. AT&T’s outage tool can provide current details and status updates.
- Open the outage lookup page from a device that still has cellular data or another working connection.
- Check the service address or account associated with the affected internet line.
- Subscribe to the available text notifications so changes to the incident come to your phone.
- Note whether the page reports a confirmed outage, maintenance, or no known issue.
A confirmed area outage is upstream of your home. Restarting indoor equipment will not restore a provider-side failure, so move directly to a cellular backup method while waiting for AT&T’s updates. If no outage is listed, continue with the gateway troubleshooting steps below; the problem may be limited to your gateway, Wi-Fi, wiring or account.

Compare the ways to get online
| Option | When it works | Main limitations |
|---|---|---|
| AT&T Internet Backup | Qualifying AT&T Fiber installation with supported All-Fi Hub, associated eligible wireless phone and Smart Home Manager setup | Limited eligibility; depends on cellular coverage and the participating phone staying powered; performance can vary |
| Phone hotspot or tethering | A phone has cellular data service and its device and plan permit hotspot use | Hotspot allowances, plan restrictions, signal quality and phone battery can limit access |
| Dedicated mobile hotspot | The hotspot has an activated SIM or service plan, cellular coverage and compatible settings | Buying hardware alone supplies no internet; recurring service and coverage are required |
| Gateway restart | No outage is reported and the local gateway may be stuck | Disconnects devices temporarily and cannot bypass an area outage |
| Public Wi-Fi | A safe, accessible network is available nearby | Availability, speed, privacy and security vary; it is not an AT&T restoration method |
Prepare before the next outage
Backup options are easiest to use when they are tested before the AT&T connection fails. While your home internet is working, install and sign in to Smart Home Manager if you may qualify for Internet Backup, confirm that the app recognizes the correct All-Fi Hub, and identify the wireless phone that will participate. Check that the phone’s SIM and cellular data service are active, and keep its account associated with the Fiber account. A phone that is eligible in isolation may not qualify if it is not linked to the correct account.
Also locate the phone’s hotspot controls, note its network name and password, and connect one laptop or tablet briefly so you know the procedure. Confirm that your wireless plan permits tethering; the presence of a hotspot menu does not guarantee that the plan includes it. Charge the phone and any dedicated hotspot, and keep a suitable charging cable or power bank available. A power bank extends battery runtime only—it does not supply cellular service, activate a SIM or replace a data plan.
These checks prevent a common outage mistake: purchasing a hotspot or changing Wi-Fi settings after the failure, only to discover that the device has no active service. Hardware, a SIM and a supported plan are separate requirements.
Use AT&T Internet Backup if your Fiber setup qualifies
AT&T Internet Backup is an automatic cellular fallback for a limited set of AT&T Fiber customers. AT&T lists all of the following prerequisites on its Internet Backup setup page:
- AT&T Fiber service.
- A BGW320 or BGW620 All-Fi Hub.
- An eligible AT&T Wireless unlimited-plan device associated with the Fiber account.
- The Smart Home Manager app.
Having AT&T Fiber alone does not establish eligibility. If any listed component is missing, use ordinary phone tethering or another cellular connection instead.
Enable the feature before an outage
- Remain at home and connect your phone to the AT&T Wi-Fi network.
- Open Smart Home Manager and locate the Internet Backup card.
- Follow the in-app prompts, including any requested permissions, to associate the eligible wireless device.
- Leave the participating phone charged and within useful cellular coverage. A power bank can extend its operating time, but a power bank does not provide connectivity by itself.
The setup requires the hub to be online and the phone to be connected to home Wi-Fi, so configure it while Fiber is available rather than waiting for an outage. If the Internet Backup card is absent, check the hub model, Fiber status, wireless-plan eligibility and account association. Do not assume that a different AT&T phone or a later-added line will be accepted automatically.
Once configured, the All-Fi Hub can use the participating mobile device when the Fiber connection is unavailable. When Fiber service returns, AT&T says the hub switches back automatically. You do not need to manually move every household device to a different Wi-Fi name.
Understand the backup connection’s limits
AT&T describes Internet Backup as using wireless-network data rather than the phone’s regular mobile-hotspot allowance. That distinction means the feature is not the same as turning on the phone’s personal hotspot, although the cellular network still determines the available capacity. AT&T notes that backup speeds may differ from Fiber speeds and may slow when the wireless network is busy.

Because the fallback depends on the associated phone, a dead battery, disabled cellular service, missing SIM activation or poor coverage can prevent it from coming online. Keep cellular data enabled on the participating device and avoid placing it in a location where its signal is consistently weak. If the backup card does not appear in Smart Home Manager, recheck the Fiber gateway model, the wireless plan eligibility and the account association rather than assuming the outage is the cause.
Share a phone’s cellular connection with a hotspot
For customers without Internet Backup, ordinary phone tethering is usually the quickest alternative. It works only when the phone has usable cellular data and the plan and device support hotspot use. AT&T’s tethering guidance covers checking coverage, SIM activation, cellular settings, Wi-Fi credentials and restarting the hotspot or client device (AT&T Device User Guide: Tethering and Mobile Hotspot Troubleshooting).
Turn on the hotspot
- Open the phone’s network or connections settings and select the control labeled Mobile Hotspot, Personal Hotspot or Tethering. The wording and location differ by phone model and software.
- Enable the hotspot and display its Wi-Fi network name and password.
- On the computer, tablet or streaming device that needs access, open its Wi-Fi list, select that network and enter the displayed password.
- Keep the phone where it receives a strong cellular signal, preferably near a window or in an open area, while leaving it close enough for the client devices to connect.
- Connect the phone to a charger if the session will last more than a few minutes. Hotspot operation can drain a battery quickly.
Use the phone’s cellular-data indicator to distinguish an internet problem from a local Wi-Fi association problem. A client may show a Wi-Fi connection to the phone while the phone itself has no usable mobile data; in that case, moving the phone or resolving cellular service is necessary.

- Hotspot switch is missing or disabled: Confirm that the wireless plan and device permit tethering. A plan restriction cannot be corrected by changing the Wi-Fi password.
- Connected devices say there is no internet: Check cellular bars and mobile data on the phone, then restart the phone’s hotspot and the client device.
- Hotspot cannot be found: Toggle the hotspot off and on, keep the phone awake during initial pairing, and rescan Wi-Fi on the client.
- Password is rejected: Re-display the current hotspot password and enter it exactly; changing the password can disconnect devices already attached.
- Connection drops: Check SIM installation and activation, cellular settings and signal quality. A congested or weak cellular network can interrupt service even when the hotspot feature is enabled.
AT&T’s Quatro troubleshooting guide also directs users to verify coverage, SIM status, cellular settings, Wi-Fi credentials and device restarts when a mobile connection fails.
Use a dedicated mobile hotspot
A separate hotspot can preserve the phone’s battery and leave the phone available for calls, but it is not a self-contained replacement for AT&T service. Before relying on one, verify that it has an active SIM or service subscription, cellular coverage at your location and a plan compatible with hotspot data. AT&T’s device troubleshooting material emphasizes checking activation, SIM installation, coverage, cellular settings and Wi-Fi credentials.
Set it up for an outage
- Activate the hotspot and confirm that its account or SIM is provisioned for data before the home connection fails.
- Place it where the cellular signal is strongest while keeping it within range of the devices you intend to connect.
- Read the network name and password from the device display or its management page.
- Join that network from each computer or tablet, then open a webpage to verify actual internet access.
- Keep the hotspot powered. If it has a removable battery, charge it in advance; if it uses USB power, have a suitable cable and power source ready.
If the hotspot powers on but no devices can browse, the likely causes are missing service activation, an incompatible plan, no cellular coverage or incorrect Wi-Fi credentials. Reboot both the hotspot and one client device after checking those items. Purchasing a hotspot without arranging service will not create a connection.
Restart the AT&T gateway when no outage is reported
When AT&T’s outage checker shows no known incident, use the restart procedure in its internet help guidance. This addresses a gateway that has stopped responding locally; it does not repair a confirmed upstream outage.

- Wait at least 20 seconds with the device unpowered.
- Reconnect the power cable securely.
- Allow the gateway to restart fully. AT&T says this can take up to five minutes, and the exact timing and indicator lights vary by model and service.
- Reconnect a test device and open a webpage. Other household devices may need to rejoin Wi-Fi if the restart interrupted their sessions.
Do not repeatedly restart a gateway while AT&T is reporting an area outage. Every restart temporarily disconnects connected devices, while the provider-side fault remains unchanged.

Troubleshoot when the backup connection still fails
There is no cellular signal
Move the phone or hotspot to a location with better reception and check whether another nearby location has service. Internet Backup, phone tethering and a dedicated hotspot all depend on the wireless network; none can work in a coverage dead zone. If the phone shows an emergency-only or no-service state, Wi-Fi settings on the client will not solve the problem.
The SIM or account is not active
Check that the SIM is installed correctly and that the line is activated on the account. An unactivated SIM, suspended line or plan without hotspot support prevents data sharing even when the device’s hotspot menu is visible. For Internet Backup, verify that the wireless device is the eligible one associated with the Fiber account.
Only one device cannot connect
Forget the hotspot network on that client, rescan for available networks and enter the current password. Restart the client if it still retains an old address or session. If other devices browse normally, focus on the affected client’s Wi-Fi settings rather than changing the cellular source.
All devices connect but browsing is slow
Cellular backup is not guaranteed to match Fiber performance. AT&T notes that Internet Backup speeds can vary and may decrease when the wireless network is busy. Reduce large downloads, pause cloud synchronization and disconnect devices that do not need access. These steps free capacity but cannot increase the underlying cellular signal or network capacity.
The phone loses power
Connect the participating phone to mains power or a charged power bank. For Internet Backup, the phone must remain available to the All-Fi Hub; for ordinary tethering, it must remain on both to provide Wi-Fi and to maintain cellular data. A power bank extends runtime only and does not replace a wireless plan or coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use public Wi-Fi only as a temporary fallback
If cellular service is unavailable but a trusted public network is accessible, it can provide short-term access for essential tasks. Availability and quality differ by location, and public networks are not an AT&T outage remedy. Avoid entering sensitive credentials on an untrusted network, prefer encrypted websites, and disconnect when finished. Do not assume that a public network is private simply because it requires a password.
A practical outage decision path
- Check AT&T first: Use the outage lookup and enable text updates.
- If an outage is confirmed: Use Internet Backup when your Fiber account meets every listed requirement; otherwise use a phone hotspot or an activated dedicated hotspot with cellular coverage.
- If no outage is listed: Restart the gateway once using the 20-second power removal procedure and wait up to five minutes for recovery.
- If cellular backup fails: Check coverage, SIM or activation status, plan support, Wi-Fi credentials, device power and client restarts in that order.
- If no cellular option is available: Use a safe public network temporarily, while continuing to monitor AT&T’s outage status.
Do not count on a restoration-time promise, a particular speed or universal backup eligibility. The reliable choice is the one whose prerequisites you have already verified: an eligible Fiber installation for Internet Backup, a supported phone plan for tethering, or an activated hotspot service for a standalone device.

Does every AT&T Fiber customer get Internet Backup?
No. AT&T lists AT&T Fiber, a BGW320 or BGW620 All-Fi Hub, an eligible AT&T Wireless unlimited-plan device associated with the Fiber account, and Smart Home Manager as requirements.
Does Internet Backup use my phone’s normal hotspot allowance?
AT&T says Internet Backup uses wireless-network data rather than the phone’s regular mobile-hotspot allowance. It still depends on cellular coverage, the participating phone’s service and battery, and current network capacity.
Can I use a phone hotspot during an AT&T outage?
Yes, if the phone has usable cellular data and both the phone and plan support tethering. Turn on Mobile Hotspot or Personal Hotspot, then connect your computer or tablet to the displayed Wi-Fi name and password.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will buying a dedicated mobile hotspot provide internet immediately?
No. The device also needs an activated SIM or service subscription, cellular coverage and a compatible plan. Hardware alone does not provide connectivity.
How long should I leave my AT&T gateway unplugged?
AT&T’s guidance says to remove power for at least 20 seconds, reconnect it and allow the gateway or All-Fi Hub to restart; the process can take up to five minutes depending on the model and service.
Why is my backup connection slower than Fiber?
AT&T says Internet Backup speeds may differ from Fiber and may slow when the wireless network is busy. Pause large downloads and unnecessary devices, but do not expect cellular backup to match your normal wired performance.
The Bottom Line
Check AT&T’s outage page first. For a confirmed outage, use preconfigured Internet Backup if your Fiber account meets every requirement; otherwise use a supported phone hotspot or an activated dedicated hotspot with cellular coverage. If no outage is reported, restart the gateway for 20 seconds and allow up to five minutes for it to recover. Keep the participating phone or hotspot charged, and remember that neither hardware nor a power bank can replace an active cellular plan and signal.
