To get the first users for a free command-line tool, make the tool easy to understand, install, and try; publish it where its intended users already work; then give those early users a clear way to report problems. Treat launch posts as one discovery route, not a promise of adoption. No particular channel or conversion rate is established as best.
1. Explain the tool before asking anyone to install it
Put the project’s purpose in the first screen of its README or landing page. Name the intended user, the task the CLI simplifies, and show one short example of what it does. A visitor should be able to tell quickly whether the tool solves a problem they have.
For example, describe a command’s outcome rather than its implementation: “Create a preview of a configuration file before deployment” is more useful to a prospective user than a list of internal libraries. Keep the example honest and runnable; do not imply capabilities the current release lacks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Make the first successful run straightforward
Place the installation command and a small first-use example near the top of the README. Include the prerequisites, supported operating systems, and any account, authentication, or configuration step needed to get that example working. Explain what success looks like and where a user should go if it fails.

For JavaScript packages, npm documents package sharing and the use of npx to run a package without first installing it as a persistent dependency. That can lower friction for some tools, but it is not a universal installation method for every CLI. See npm’s documentation on npm for its scope and usage.
Keep the first example small enough to copy and run, and avoid requiring users to infer hidden defaults. If a command could modify or delete files, say so before the example and provide a safe preview option where the tool supports one.
3. Choose a distribution route that fits the tool
Package managers and release downloads are different routes to installation, not interchangeable badges to collect. Compare the options against the tool’s implementation and intended audience before committing to one.

| Route | Potential fit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
npm package, optionally runnable with npx |
JavaScript-based tools whose users have a compatible Node.js environment and use npm | Users need the relevant runtime and package-manager setup; publishing and maintaining a package is part of the release workflow |
| Homebrew | Users who already install command-line software through Homebrew | Consider which operating systems and supported installation paths your packaging work will cover |
| WinGet | Windows users who use WinGet to install software | It serves a different audience and platform context from Homebrew; assess the ongoing publishing work |
| GitHub release assets | Projects that provide downloadable, platform-appropriate artifacts | Users may need to choose the right file and follow manual installation or verification steps |
These are examples, not a ranked list. The official GitHub CLI project illustrates a tool distributed through Homebrew, WinGet, and release assets, with support for macOS, Linux, and Windows. Those are details of that project, not requirements for a new CLI. Review its official repository as an example, then state only the operating systems and routes your own project supports.
GitHub CLI extensions have their own repository and executable or release-asset requirements. Those rules apply to extensions in that ecosystem, not to all command-line tools; consult GitHub’s extension documentation if you are building one.
4. Make releases easy to identify and verify
If you distribute through GitHub, publish a clearly named release tied to a version tag, write release notes that explain meaningful changes, and attach assets users can identify for their platform. GitHub CLI’s gh release create manual documents creating a release from a tag and generating release notes.

Link to the project’s issue tracker or another feedback channel you actively maintain. Tell users what to include in a bug report—for example, the command they ran, relevant error output, tool version, and operating system—and warn them to remove secrets or private data before posting logs.
When possible, acknowledge reports and explain whether a fix, workaround, or more information is needed. This makes the next step clearer for users and maintainers; available evidence does not establish a particular increase in acquisition from adding a feedback channel.

6. Track progress beyond visits
If you use suitable, privacy-respecting analytics, distinguish the stages that matter: project-page visits, installation attempts, successful first use, repeat use, and useful feedback. A visit is not an installation, and an installation is not proof that the tool solved someone’s problem.
Report only measurements you actually collect, with the period, geography, and method that give the numbers meaning. There is no established conversion benchmark here that a new CLI should be expected to hit.
7. Treat launch promotion as one discovery route
A launch post can introduce the tool, but pair it with places where its intended users can understand and evaluate it: relevant community participation, clear documentation, practical examples, and direct outreach where it is appropriate. Choose channels based on where prospective users discuss the problem the tool addresses.

What a successful first-user funnel looks like
The practical sequence is: a reader recognizes the problem, sees a credible example, finds an installation route that fits their setup, gets a first run working, and knows how to give feedback. Improve the step where people actually get stuck; do not substitute a launch-day traffic spike for evidence of successful use.
