You can use DuckDuckGo on a Kindle Fire immediately through Amazon Silk, the browser that comes pre-installed on Fire tablets. Open Silk, go to duckduckgo.com, and search normally.
If you want the separate DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser app, the situation is different: DuckDuckGo’s current official download page directs Android users to Google Play and does not list an Amazon Appstore or Fire-tablet edition. Installing that Android app on Fire OS therefore requires sideloading or a separately installed Google Play environment, and compatibility is not guaranteed for every Fire tablet.
The simplest option: use DuckDuckGo in Silk
This is the official, lowest-risk way to get DuckDuckGo on a Kindle Fire. Amazon identifies Silk as the preferred browser for Fire tablets and says it is available to open and use for browsing.

- From the Fire tablet home screen, open Amazon Silk.
- Tap the address bar.
- Enter
https://duckduckgo.com/. - Run your search from the DuckDuckGo page.
This gives you DuckDuckGo Search without installing an app, downloading an APK, changing system settings, or connecting the tablet to a computer. You can save the page as a bookmark in Silk if you want quicker access.

What you are—and are not—installing
DuckDuckGo offers both a web search service and a separate browser product. Using duckduckgo.com in Silk gives you DuckDuckGo Search inside Amazon’s browser. It does not install the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser.
The separate DuckDuckGo browser includes features such as tracker blocking, ad blocking, cookie-pop-up blocking, password management, and a button for deleting tabs, history, and browsing data. Those are features of the DuckDuckGo browser app, not something automatically added to Silk by visiting the website.
Can you download DuckDuckGo from the Amazon Appstore?
Do not assume that DuckDuckGo is available there. DuckDuckGo’s current official download page lists its Android download through Google Play and does not list an Amazon Appstore version or a Fire-tablet-specific download.

Changing the search engine is not the same as installing DuckDuckGo
Some Fire-tablet instructions describe changing a search preference in Silk. That can change where browser searches go, if the option is available on your Fire OS version, but it does not install the DuckDuckGo browser app.
Fire OS versions and Silk settings differ, so the reliable method is to open Silk and visit DuckDuckGo directly. If your goal is the separate browser with DuckDuckGo’s built-in privacy controls, you need the app itself—not just a search-engine preference.
Installing the DuckDuckGo Android app by sideloading
DuckDuckGo’s official page currently points Android users to Google Play. A Fire tablet does not automatically support installing that Google Play version. To try it on Fire OS, you would need to obtain a compatible Android APK from a trustworthy source and sideload it, or install and use a Google Play environment first.
This is an advanced option. DuckDuckGo and Amazon do not provide a Fire-OS compatibility guarantee, a DuckDuckGo-specific APK filename, or a package identifier in the documentation cited here. A version that works on one Fire tablet may fail on another because of differences in Fire OS, hardware, Android compatibility, or required system components.

ADB installation procedure documented by Amazon
If you already have a compatible APK and understand the risks, Amazon documents this general computer-based procedure:
- Install or locate the Android SDK’s
platform-toolsdirectory on your computer. - Connect the Fire tablet to the computer and enable the tablet’s developer/ADB connection settings as required by your Fire OS version.
- Open Command Prompt or a terminal.
- Change to the
platform-toolsdirectory. - Check whether ADB can see the tablet:
adb devices
Confirm that the Fire tablet appears in the device list. If it does not appear, stop and fix the USB connection, authorization prompt, drivers, or developer settings before trying to install anything.
- Install the APK with Amazon’s documented command, replacing the placeholder with the actual file path:
adb install <APK_path>
For example, the command structure is:
adb install /path/to/your/downloaded-app.apk
The exact path syntax varies between Windows, macOS, and Linux. Amazon’s procedure establishes how to send an APK to a Fire tablet; it does not establish that a particular DuckDuckGo APK is compatible with your model.
Common sideloading failures
| What happens | Likely issue |
|---|---|
The tablet is missing from adb devices | |
| ADB access is not enabled, the USB connection is unsuitable, authorization was not accepted, or the computer lacks the required driver/configuration. | |
| Installation reports an incompatible or invalid package | The APK may target an Android version, processor architecture, or system feature that your Fire tablet does not support. |
| The app installs but will not open | The app may depend on Google Play services or other components unavailable on that Fire OS installation. |
| The browser behaves incorrectly | Silk and Amazon WebView are different components. Both use Chromium-based technology, but they are not identical, so behavior in Silk cannot be used to predict how an Android APK will behave. |
Do not use a random APK just because its filename appears in an online guide. Verify its source and intended Android architecture, and remember that sideloading an unofficial or modified package creates a security and privacy risk.

Older Kindle Fire models need extra caution
“Kindle Fire” covers hardware from several generations. The original 2011 Kindle Fire used Android 2.3.4 and an older Silk runtime. Modern Android browser APKs should not be assumed to work on it. Amazon also notes that Chrome DevTools are unavailable on devices incompatible with Chromium, including the first-generation Kindle Fire.
On very old hardware, Silk access to DuckDuckGo may be the only practical choice, and even website behavior may be limited by the tablet’s old browser runtime. Current Fire tablets are a different platform from the original Kindle Fire and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Silk versus the DuckDuckGo browser
| Need | Best option |
|---|---|
| Search with DuckDuckGo now | Open Silk and visit https://duckduckgo.com/. |
| Avoid installing software or changing settings | Use DuckDuckGo through Silk. |
| Use DuckDuckGo’s dedicated tracker and ad blocking features | Try the separate Android browser, but only through a compatible and trusted installation method. |
| Use a first-generation Kindle Fire | Prefer Silk; do not expect a current Android APK to install or run. |
Recommended answer
For most Kindle Fire owners, the answer is simply: open Amazon Silk and browse to https://duckduckgo.com/. This is supported, requires no sideloading, and avoids the uncertainty of installing a Google Play Android package on Fire OS.
Only pursue the APK route if you specifically need the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser’s app-level features and are prepared to check compatibility for the exact tablet and Fire OS version. Changing a search setting will not install that browser, and DuckDuckGo should not be described as pre-installed just because Silk is.

FAQ
Is DuckDuckGo already installed on Kindle Fire tablets?
No. Amazon Silk is pre-installed on Fire tablets; DuckDuckGo is not identified as a pre-installed Fire-tablet app. You can use DuckDuckGo by opening Silk and visiting duckduckgo.com.
How do I make DuckDuckGo my browser on a Kindle Fire?
The dependable method is to use Amazon Silk and open https://duckduckgo.com/. The DuckDuckGo Android browser is a separate app, and DuckDuckGo’s current download page directs Android users to Google Play rather than the Amazon Appstore.
Can I install DuckDuckGo from the Amazon Appstore?
DuckDuckGo’s current official download page does not list an Amazon Appstore edition. Check your tablet’s own store if you want, but do not rely on older instructions claiming that the app is universally available there.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I install the Google Play version on Fire OS?
Not automatically. You would need a separately installed Google Play environment or sideload the Android APK. Compatibility is not guaranteed, and the official documentation does not provide a DuckDuckGo-specific Fire OS package or compatibility promise.
What is the safest way to use DuckDuckGo on a Kindle Fire?
Use the pre-installed Amazon Silk browser, enter https://duckduckgo.com/, and search there. No APK, ADB command, or extra permissions are needed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Open Amazon Silk, go to duckduckgo.com, and use DuckDuckGo from the web. The separate DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser is an Android app distributed through Google Play, not a confirmed universal Fire-tablet or Amazon Appstore installation. Sideloading is possible in principle, but it requires a compatible APK, ADB or another installation method, and troubleshooting if Fire OS rejects or cannot run the app.
